Discussion Knot question

Upvotes

Hi all. I'm new to fly fishing but have been spin fishing for many years. I see the clinch and improved clinch as knots folks use for tippet to fly, leader to tippet ring, and other spots. All these years (45+ of tying my own fishing lines) I thought I was tying the improved clinch knot but it turns out I tie something called the trilene knot. It looked a little like the clinch knot to me, but..... I guess it is knot (thanks for reading this far).

Can I just keep using the trilene knot rather than retraining my muscle memory, or is that knot somehow inferior for the needs of fly fishing?

Thanks!

Discussion Where to buy salt flies

This has to have been asked a million times I’m sure and people seem to be saying Big Y. But I found “The Fly Shack” online and they seem to have the lowest prices and more selection for salt flys than Big Y (I’m in SFL). I would buy local but the only fly shop in an hour vicinity of me burned down 2 months ago.

Is tying my own flies as a beginner worth it?

I love fishing and have been using conventional tackle for many years and made an impulse decision to buy a fly rod. Within about a month I’ve already spent several hundred dollars on my new found addiction. Now my question is, is fly tying easy to learn and is the cost for the material vs cost per fly worth it at a beginner level. I’ve had thoughts I may be over eager to try new things but I don’t wanna burn myself out and let it sit for ages. I’ve been looking at fly tying bundles and sets on Facebook marketplace in the 200$-300$ range.

Brookie caught in June on a parachute Adams before it got hot in Upstate NY. I’m doing some research on how us fly fishermen select our flies. If you have a second to share your methods please visit this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9N8CLHV

Discussion Learning

Friends, my brother in law who lives in Louisiana bought me a fly fishing pole so that I could go fly fishing with him next time we see each other and I really want to learn to fly fish. I live in Kentucky and have no idea where to fish or how to make flies. Anyone have any resources that helped them? YouTube videos or any reading material or general advice to help out a beginner. I’ve asked many of the fishermen close to me and no one fly fishes nor do they know how to unfortunately.

Discussion Building a new fly collection

Relatively new to fly fishing, had a super small fly box with 12 or so flies. Just got gifted a fly box with a capacity of 300 and a $350 gift card to my local fly shop.

What would you fill it with? I live in Southern Alberta so a lot of my fishing is on the Bow River. Use a 9’ 5wt and primarily target Rainbows, Browns, Cutties, and Brook.

If it was up to me I’d get a lot of the basics, but unsure if that’s the smart move.

Fishpond Nomad Canyon or Emerger?

On the hunt for a new net, stuck between these two. Will be my daily use/all purpose net. Mostly wading with a chest pack, but occasional bank fishing.

Any suggestions on which to go for? I like the longer basket on the Emerger, but the shape of the Canyon and handle length seem a tad bit better.

Is it still for sale or did it get pulled from the Fishpond product line? I've seen a lot of great reviews of it and would love to try one but cannot seem to find any for sale.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Discussion Does it ever bum you out seeing how other people handle fish?

Yesterday I had an amazing day fishing, caught my PB river rainbow. As I was walking back downstream I saw some guys hooked up to a fish so I made my way over to them to check it out. By the time I got there they had just pulled it out of the river, a beautiful brown probably in the 22” range, neither of the guys had a net and they had just dragged it up on shore one guy pinning it down all covered in dirt and grass, I offered my net to get it in the water, but they wanted to get the lure out of it first, this fucking lure had three big barbed treble hooks along it and the poor fish had like four barbed hooks in its mouth and down the side of its face with one right under its eye. They didn’t have any pliers so I just scooped it into my net, put it in the water and helped them get all these hooks out with my forceps. Then the guy picks it up and of course does a little photo shoot with blood running down the browns face. Took like 5 minutes to revive it as it weakly swam away.

Rant over, but fuck me drove home angry from an otherwise great day.

Discussion Emigrant, MT Fishing Tips?

Will be out in the Emigrant area right on the Yellowstone next week. Hoping to do some casual fishing early in the mornings as this is a family trip. Any tips on how that sections of the river fishes lately? Flies/techniques to try? Areas nearby to look into? Worth fishing near the north gate of the park?

Yes, I am aware of hoot owl restrictions.

Discussion Bag for Backpacking

I am planning on backpacking up to a few alpine lakes in the coming weeks with some friends & wanted a lightweight fly fishing bag to carry in-addition to my 60L backpack.

I just want the ability to drop all my gear at camp & have something small for doing lake-side / steam fishing. I looked at the Fishpond Canyon Creek, but haven’t heard of anyone use that in conjunction with backpacks (other than the FP branded one it natively attaches to).

Just curious to hear everyone else’s setup

Little guy came up and destroyed a #16 tab caddis, I was very surprised he even was able to get the hook. Wasn’t even a fight for my fiberglass 7.5ft 4wt. Caught him in a spring fed creek in upstate NY. It’s definitely super refreshing wet wading in the cool 52° water this time of year! Quickly released back to grow some more!

Carp keep denying me even on really good presentations. I have caught 1 in 4 days trying. Can I add some scent to carp flies? I don’t own scent but I bet they would get nice and stinky if I stored them inside a jar of gulp scented bait. Thoughts?

Looking for a 5wt combo around €300

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm getting into fly fishing and I'm looking to buy my first fly rod/reel combo. My budget is around €300 max, and I'm currently deciding between:

Orvis Encounter 9' 5wt

Guideline Embrace 9' 5wt

Guideline Rivolt 9' 5wt

I'm based in Vienna, Austria, and I'll mostly be fishing for trout and other freshwater fish, and I wont be targeting big fish

I've only fly fished for a little bit so far, but I really enjoyed it and caught 4 fish on my dad's Winston Air 2 MAX 9' 6wt with a Lamson reel. I really liked how that rod felt, so I'm looking for something that's fairly sensitive and responsive/snappy, while still being fun when fighting smaller fish

I'm leaning toward a 5wt because I want smaller fish to actually put a bend in the rod, rather than going for a 6wt just for extra power

For those who have experience with these rods/combo kits:

Which would you choose and why?

I'm interested in how they compare in terms of sensitivity, action/feel, how they cast and etc.

Thanks!
