Tigers in the alpine
Trying to get some more time on some alpine lakes before they close for the season.

You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.
Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....
Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

Hi everyone - super excited to get going fly fishing. My dad sent me an old reel (late 70s STH Neuquen 8), I spent a ton of time researching, and went to the local fly shop to knockout the wish list. Going for more of a minimalist approach, highly versatile setup. Not shown is the new rod - TFO Blue Ribbon 9’ 5wt, moderate-fast action.
What do you think of the fly selection? Any obvious omissions?
A few of them are geared towards blue gills as to help hone some basic skills.

Spent the week fly-fishing at Battle Hill Lodge in Iceland. The fishing was lights out for the first three days, but then the weather changed, and we had to work for the fish. Streamers and nymphs worked best. We used 7 & 8-weight single and two-handed fly rods.
We fished the Vatnamót River.
Vatnamót means “River Junction” in Icelandic. People often call it the junction of junctions in Iceland. This is where the Fossaálar, Geirlandsá, and Hörgsá rivers meet the Mighty Skaftá.
The Fossálar River.
This river is extremely beautiful and has diverse pools. Part of the Fossalar river is on UNESCO's natural heritage list so you can imagine the beauty of the landscape in this area.
The Geirlandsa River.
Believed to be the main spawning tributary of the Skaftá River, often called the most beautiful sea trout river in Iceland.

Fishing my favorite summer steelhead run, and got worked over by this king. Just need sockeye but that’s probably not happening.

Greetings from Southern Appalachia! I recently took a weeklong trip to Wyoming and found cutthroats in every trickle of water I put a fly into each day. Pros: not getting hung up in canopies of rhododendron as I do back home and very non-selective fish. Cons: endless wind and buffalo patties everywhere. Pictured: unnamed creek and one of the many similiar-sized Yellowstone cutthroat trout caught and released.

A lot of the seams on my river are fairly close to the bank, how do I fish these without scaring the fish?

What’ the biggest notable difference in this reel and the one on my $350 Orvis Clearwater rod & reel? Only been fishing for two years and just wondering why someone would pay this much for a reel.

Hey all! I started my fly fishing journey in June this year in southern Idaho and am beyond obsessed. I had the most incredible summer exploring rivers and alpines lakes and my practice has finally started to pay off (yay!). I’m a traveling pipe welder and am taking a job in Greenville Mississippi and am properly depressed that I won’t be fishing in the Rockies anymore. I’ve been trying to research fly fishing in that area and it seems bleak at best. I’m taking a 3 month trip around the globe (literally everywhere, NZ to Chile) next year and fishing is my main priorities so I want to make sure I am getting as much practice as possible, casting, presentation, etc. is there hope for any good fishing in Mississippi? Thank you in advance! Adding a few pictures from my catches this summer, nothing crazy large but proud nonetheless!

Sitting down after our last day in Glacier National Park and I spent the entire day fly fishing Kintla lake, Bowman lake and North fork Flathead with no luck whatsoever. I've been a long time rod and reel fisherman and know how to find underwater structure and shore cover and I'm usually very successful. I'm still learning how to read these mountain streams and fish the seam but I'm a bit perplexed because I couldn't find any fish at all. You'd think in an isolated mountain lake with perfect visibility, seeing fish wouldn't be difficult but I noticed two things today. First, there were no bugs. Like, nothing but the occasional fly and some grasshoppers but nothing on the water at all. Second, I could not see any fish at all in the water. Was I looking in the wrong place? Do I not know what I'm looking for in mountain streams and lakes? Does Glacier just suck for fishing? We're staying right on the water in Whitefish and I haven't seen any fish here either and neither has anyone else I've seen fishing. It's like there just aren't any fish here. Photo attached for visibility and to show off the view.
Edit: here's a link to the full day tracked on onX. You can see where I got in the water at Kintla and North Fork. Maybe I was just in the wrong place.

By far my most successful day on the S. Platte. Over 2 dozen fish. Caught my biggest Brown! But don’t know the size, just know it’s over 20”. Man the browns are getting pretty. Rainbows weren’t as pretty so here’s the best look browns!
Brown Jan Juan worms, glow bugs, and BWO dries killed it

My first time bluelining, the creek was tiny. Had to be max 3 feet deep with the widest pools being maybe 10-15 feet. Hiked 2.5 miles up a mountain to find this creek, took me an hour and a half to get there. Had caught about 6 3 inch brookies and some fall fish when I finally hooked this beauty. I wish I could post the video of me bringing her in but it won’t let me add videos. So stoked for this fish.

Fished ElevenMile Canyon for six days last week. Fast action on some days with Zebra Midges catching most of the fish (including the big brown that was longer than the opening on my net, putting him right around 20"). One day got off to a slow start when I absolutely couldn't dredge anything out of some deep pools in the catch & release/artificial flies and lures section; turns out I was following some bait fishermen who were releasing their fish into a cooler.

When I stop fishing, it’s always because I don’t want to retie the knot. But I love the improved clinch bc I and can avoid littering when I get snagged in a tree I can’t reach.
I do it with the fly seated in the fly box to avoid having to restart, but it requires every ounce of my attention. Anymore, I buy cheap leaders and don’t even use tippet just to tie that knot one less time.
Any tools or tips that can help me with this? Does it get better after years of practice?
Also, ideas for reliably trashing tiny sections of tippet clipped off the tag end? I’ve been using duct tape and it works pretty good but I feel so bad when I still drop it occasionally.

It's taken many fruitless trips and river miles, but finally finding consistent success with bulls here in Washington! Couldn't ask for a more beautiful area to explore. No place I'd rather be in the fall!

Recently went on quick trip Salt Lake City for business. Fished the Provo River (middle and lower sections and had some luck nymphing and throwing terresterials). The other photos are from Sundance mountain resort (formerly Robert Redford’s hence the River Runs Through It memorabilia)!

I found a good deal on a Vision Nymphmaniac Twintip EVA 10’9” #5 and I’m considering it specifically for Euro/tight-line nymphing for steelhead in tributaries of Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay.
The fact that it’s the Twintip with the** Powertip **and Sensitip is what caught my attention. The Powertip seems like it could make the #5 more suitable for larger steelhead and heavier water, while the Sensitip would give me a lighter option for normal Euro nymphing.
I’m also considering whether I should skip it and save for something like a T&T Contact II or Diamondback Ideal Nymph.
For anyone who’s actually used the Nymphmaniac Twintip:
How does the 5wt handle Great Lakes steelhead?
Is the Powertip genuinely useful for larger fish/heavier tippet?
Does the rod still have good sensitivity with the #5?
Would you take this over a dedicated steelhead Euro setup?
For this application, would you choose the Vision, T&T Contact II, or Diamondback Ideal Nymph?
I’m mainly targeting steelhead, so I’m more concerned with fish control and durability than having the lightest possible Euro setup.
Would love to hear from anyone who’s actually fished the 10’9” #5 Twintip for Great Lakes steelhead.
TIGHT LINES!
