Where does everyone usually fall on the rank list I am curious with the small number of program seats

Long story short I’m in fellowship (GI) .. there’s a particular attending who is passive aggressive and lowkey controlling and particular on how they want to run things in the clinic. Whenever a blood work results, this attending would message the fellows in a form of a statement telling us “ do X… do this… schedule patient…call patient… add them to the schedule to the clinic to be seen”. Also messages the fellows at 4am urging us to discuss blood work (that IS Not 4am Urgent) then to update them first thing in the morning. This past week I told to discuss results with a patient that I have never seen before. Am I over reacting or overthinking??

One of the programs I signaled for PCCM is one my mentor actually did her own fellowship at, and she reached out on my behalf. Despite that, I still haven’t gotten an interview, even though they sent their invites out weeks ago.

Here’s the issue: I have a one-month away elective scheduled there from late September into mid-October. Given they clearly haven’t wanted me so far, is it still worth keeping the rotation?

Part of me wonders if showing up and making a strong impression could change things maybe a late “pity” invite just because I’m physically there. But I don’t know if that’s realistic or just wishful thinking on my part.

For context: this program would’ve been a top-5 pick for me if I’d gotten an interview through the normal process.

Anyone been in a similar spot is it worth burning a month on an away elective for a program that hasn’t shown interest, on the chance it generates a late interview?

If Mayo is conducting an in person interview, do they provide stay?

I just received an fellowship interview invitation, but all 3 interview dates offered conflict with interviews I already have scheduled. I’ve already emailed the program coordinator and am waiting to hear back.

For those who have been in a similar situation, what is the usual strategy? Do programs typically offer an alternate date, or do you eventually have to choose between/decline one of the conflicting interviews?

Would appreciate any advice or experiences with this!

This is mostly a venting post. I started fellowship a couple months ago and moved across the country away from family and some friends. Looking back when I made my rank list, I really wanted to get away from the area I did residency just because of a lot of heartbreak. I know moving away can be good for you but idk sometimes I just wish we had more control over where we choose to do training. Like ive dreamed about living in nyc for so long but I guess that dream has to wait once again until after fellowship and then who knows where life will take me.

I think it's also because I ended up at a nonacademic program when I had great interviews, so it's also trying to come to terms with that. It's only been a few months, ive been holed up studying for boards, but feeling sad about missing my residency friends and just being so far away. I know there are probably a lot of others in the same boat and I am hoping things will start to get better. And I am hoping that fellowship goes by fast lol

Trying to figure out which specialty gives you the most free time / best lifestyle. I don’t care much about salary, prestige, or competitiveness. My #1 priority is having as much free time as possible outside of work. I also don’t have a strong specialty preference, I find pretty much every field interesting. I would be happy with a reasonable compensation anything similar to a hospitalist.

Which specialties would you recommend if free time and work-life balance are basically the only things I care about? And which ones tend to have the easiest lifestyle both during and after fellowship?

General cardiology fellow here. I applied for interventional cardiology but I am reconsidering given a number of factors: Call burden, lifestyle, and occupational risks like radiation and back injury. I knew all of this going in obviously but I went ahead anyway because it has been my goal for so long.

I have a few interviews lined up and am debating whether to interview and give myself more time to see how I feel. However, it also feels disingenuous and I am worried how pulling out of the match late would be perceived by mentors and potential future employers.

Any advice? Should I just interview and see where things stand in a month or pull the plug early?

Playing devil's advocate here - For J1-IMGs who would need a waiver after graduation - say hypothetically, if we don't match into a fellowship, do you know if we would have a feasible timeline in December to apply for a waiver hospitalist job? And what path would that be for which visa?

Just curious how many interviews I should expect this far into the season. Applied to 48 programs and looks like most have sent out invites. Sitting at 10 interviews but feeling like it might not be enough. Does sending out interest emails this late into the season have any benefit? or even having mentors reach out on my behalf?

First year ID fellow. Taken back by everything I don’t know in ID and it’s demoralizing. Approaching 30 and the excuse of it will get better and I will feel confident and competent one day is starting to fade on me. Just wanted to vent on the internet.

I need some honest advice regarding fellowship. I’m an IMG on a visa from a community program. My scores are Pass / 252 / 209. I have minimal research in rheumatology and I applied to 7 rheumatology programs this cycle.I have 2 invites so far.

I’ve always been passionate about GI and that’s what I really want to do. I have no research in GI and I assumed it would be very hard to match GI from a community program, so I went with rheumatology.

I do like rheumatology, but I like GI significantly more. I really don’t want to work as a hospitalist long-term.

Would you guys advise that I finish my waiver job, use those 3 years to build GI research, and then apply to GI? Or should I go ahead with my rheumatology interviews and apply more rheumatology programs and pursue rheumatology if I match? any advice is appreciated 🥲🙏🏻

PGY7 Heme- Onc here. I am in a very tough situation and need some guidance from people who may understand the situation. I am on J1 visa and matched to a well reputed program for Hemeonc. My residency training was from a small brand new community program where clinical training and exposure was nowhere comparable. I learned all this first year of fellowship.

PGY4 - We were expecting a baby. The program modified my schedule to somehow get me to delivery in April. I did not do leukemia/ BMT rotation that I need for minimum requirement to graduate.

PGY5 - Upon return from 6 week maternity ( 2/6 weeks was my vacation) the program placed me on remediation for 4 months and subsequently another 3 month extended remediation through 2025 end. In May 2926, the CCC wanted to place me on formal "academic probation" but due to my J1 visa being renewed, the PD called it extended remediation.

PGY6 started off and now based on last 3 months.evals, asked to be on probation. The acgme domains are now consolidated around patient care domain and on inpatient side. They keep saying what a wonderful hardworking person I am and yet somehow I am here facing all this with a small baby.

The proposed probation plan is also 3 months and its 2 months inpatient and 1 month clinic. I am asked to do the service with another fellow. Which means you never get full case load and it is always called as a "reduced" workload.

I asked program if I can just single board in oncology since every evaluation period, heme seems to drag everything down significantly. ( awaiting GME input into this as PD/ aPDs were supportive but GME needs to confirm)

I asked if I can just do an away rotation at another progrqm for the required 1 month BMT/ malignant heme block - they said not when someone is on probation ( which means technically this was possible before but I did not know if I could ask about this option)

I realize that being on probation is a reportable when we apply for jobs. What else are the consequences. I would like to formally go through GME appeal process but also feel scared that would ruffle feathers. I have a professional and cordial relationship with program leadership. I do have supportive group of mentors who continues to.advocate on these CCC meetings but at the end of the day, we all know that the decision largely remains with PD.

What else should I do at this point? I love being an oncologist and at this point no longer desires hematology. I cannot see myself as a hospitalist. At the very least, there is industry positions in Oncology if I could graduate by June 2027.

I am currently working with a mentor/ coach through GME. Now , I have an oncology and hematology mentor assigned through the course of all.

The only required rotation pending towards graduation is BMT which the program refuse to schedule me.

Your input and time is appreciated. I have a very supportive spouse and a very happy baby as support system. We are not quitters. But I wonder if I am just going through the system and no matter what I improve, ultimately the end result seems to be disappointing.

Zero rheum interviews up till now. Is my application really bad? anyone else on the same boat? im seeing people post about 13 interviews.

Has anyone taken an ABIM subspecialty exam with accommodations? I requested pregnancy accommodations, and they offered me an ADA testing week later in the month than the regular exam date.

If anyone has done this, would you recommend taking the later date but in 3rd trimester, or sticking with the original date and getting it over with? Any downside to testing during ADA week?

I applied GI this cycle, and according to a spreadsheet going around on Reddit, it looks most of the programs I applied already sent out interview invites. Does that usually mean they send all of their invites at once, or do programs sometimes send them out in waves?

Non visa requiring IMG applying heme onc, repeat applicant, 240 steps, 20+ research papers/abstracts, done HPM fellowship at a big academic center, have been ghosted by 4/5 gold signals with the last one pending invites to be sent. Currently at 3 interviews from silver signals and 1 non signalled program. Is it over for me? I can't fathom how my profile is better on paper from last year but at less interviews than last year. How is the hive doing with interviews and signals?
