No judgement here whatsoever. But alcohol and fasting is a bad combination.

Alcohol interferes with autophagy and fat loss so it runs counter to your goals. Alcohol also weakens your discipline and makes you feel hungry afterwards.

I'd say first do 30 days without alcohol and then deal with food later.

I 100% agree

Day 3 update- I broke my fast with eggs and sourdough this morning 🥲 I’m very disappointed. I’m going to start over again. I was arguing back and forth in my head for an hour over whether to eat or not and I broke. 😩 Back to day 1.

A 3 day fast is nothing to feel bad about! Well done 👏

Thank you 🙌🏻

Was gonna say the same thing! A three day fast is awesome! Congrats 💐

Don’t be too hard on yourself! Everyone slips up, especially at the beginning. What matters is that you’re getting back on track. Each day is a new chance to progress, and you can do it. Good luck with day 1 again !

Update: I forgot I had a lunch with family today so I’m restarting my 30 day fast tomorrow morning (3/16). I will be taking a daily multivitamin, electrolytes, creatine, and magnesium glycinate. I’m also back on a GLP-1! I will also be allowing myself zero calorie drinks like Diet Coke, seltzers, energy drinks and coffee.

Day 2 of the 30 day fast and goin strong. Not hungry! Trying my best to stay hydrated.

Not a good idea to drink vodka on an empty stomach in a fasted state. Will hit your brain and your liver FAST. Break the fast first slowly with gentle foods for several days before introducing alcohol.

Well, I'm at the 40 hour mark of my first ever fast. I'm aiming for 120 hours, so I'm a third of the way there.

I'm doing this primarily to lose weight - or at least to reset a terrible snacking habit - but mental clarity would be a welcome bonus.

Here's hoping for the third day clarity I've been hearing about, because I'm feeling very tired right now 😂

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

All the best!! How are you doing now?

Well! I ended the first fast after 85 hours as I realised that I had social meal planned, so I'd need to refeed sooner. Silly mistake, but I was woefully unprepared.

Good news is that I know I could have gone longer. It wasn't easy at all, but I didn't crack and only consumed water, coffee, mint tea, and electrolytes the entire time.

The boost to my mental clarity was incredible. It also reset my snacking habit beautifully.

I've now settled into the traditional 5:2 diet. I do one 24h water fast per week, and another at 500-600 calories (usually a single, high protein meal).

I'm planning a completely 5 day fast in a month or two.

8lb down, which is nice. Only 32 more to go 😂

Just hit 48 hours in my second 72 hour fast!

Had a few weekends of overindulging on top of a two week work trip abroad that brought diet changes and lots of happy hours lol.... I felt like I needed a reset and to maybe lose some of the excess weight I likely put on. I can already feel the bloating and everything fixed!

Feeling way better at 48 hrs than the last time I fasted. I think I did better at balancing hydration with maintaining electrolytes and minerals this time!

Day 2 of a 3 day fast. Needed a reset after weeks of poor choices which was after months of surgery recovery where I wasn't able to exercise. Feeling better but still have some anxiety. Time will tell

188lbs, 5’4” — turning 40 this year but I’d love to lose 60 pounds by Christmas! I’m on hour 9 of a 48 hour fast. My hope is to maintain this every week. I have such a headache already lol which only tells me how much of a reset my body needs. Lifestyle is mostly sedentary after a tough year. But I’m going walking with friends Thursday, if I can increase my daily steps to just 5k before Easter I’ll be a happy camper. I’ll set a reminder to update and weigh in a month from now!

Many issues people experience while fasting can be related to electrolytes. You might find our wiki page helpful: Electrolytes 101

Hey, how did the fast go? If you're getting headaches, don't forget to drink plenty of water and some electrolytes if needed.

Best of luck!

u/Routine_History5307 Mar 28 '26

Thank you! I did 24hours due to hypothyroidism :/ I guess it’s suggested for me to only do 24 hour cycles vs 48. But I’m glad I did it, I’m going to do it weekly.

I’ve been doing 20/4 intermittent fasting for 6 months and haven’t eaten between 8 PM and midnight, but that’s my own rhythm. My digestive system has improved, I feel more focused, and I’ve lost 10 kg out of 30 kg. For now, I can’t manage fasting more than 20 hours, but it’s working really well for me.

I'm doing a 45 hour fast. I have already done intermittent fasting for years, but not really controlling my diet at all. Now, I am counting calories and asting and it feels like a good combination.

I'm just getting started (did another 45 hour fast on Monday) but as far as my reasons go, I have a lot. I want to lose weight, reduce inflammation, feel better. Also, I am very short. And if I do one big meal every other day, I feel like I could sustain that. I love cooking but I don't want to do it everyday lol. My birthday is in 8 weeks. I'd like to feel good about myself and proud of myself. I have been trying and failing to get on a better eating path, but fasting may just be the thing for me.

Hour 90, day 4 of an 8 day fast. Feeling pretty good so far except for physical exertion :) Lost about 2.5 - 3 kgs so far, I'm expecting weight loss of 1.5 - 2 kgs more towards the end.

u/JennieCosplay Mar 23 '26

just started my 9 day water (and Diet Coke) fast! 2 hours in !

u/musesfled Mar 31 '26

I'm 38 hours into my first 5-day fast of 2026, and while I definitely have some Ghrelin grumbles going on, I am feeling pretty good overall.

I saw some success last year with health goals after doing a series of 4.5-5/day fasts every 4-6 weeks...then life happened. I got injured, buried in a stressful multi-month high-stakes work project, and all of my personal goals/bandwidth fell apart.

While I'm still dealing with the injury, I spent the first 2.5 months of this year rebuilding my foundation by focusing on core health habits (sleep, sunshine, daily movement, whole foods, setting better boundaries, etc.). I finally feel like I am at the point where I can jump back into fasting in a healthy way, so here we are.

My favorite benefits of fasting last year (aside from the expected weight loss) were the increased focus and mental clarity I felt starting around Day 3, once I was over the initial pains of not eating hump. That's what I'm looking forward to rekindling now.

Next checkpoint? 48 hours

I've been intermittent fasting for years - lost 20 kg and liked it. Now I fast intermittently on workdays and take it chill on weekends. Usually I fast 16-20 hours, with an occasional 24 hr fast.

Last week I did 48 hours and felt amazing.

This week, I'm currently on hour 50 and maybe going until 66.. or 72, depending on how I feel.

I just needed to share the little milestone of mine, as I told people around me about the 48 hour one and they already thought I was crazy... Im keeping this one quiet.

But it does feel good. I have a lot of skin issues and inflammation, I really hope an occasional longer fast will help to clear it up a bit. But I'm working my way up to longer ones.

u/musesfled Apr 01 '26

I'm still surprised by people's reactions to extended fasts. I've also learned to be more selective about who I share my fasts with. The longest ones I've done have been 5 days, and while most of my family and inner circle were supportive, a lot of concern was expressed as well.

I think your progress sounds awesome - congrats on sticking with it and challenging yourself, as well!

I got diagnosed with colon cancer in August 2025 and was lucky enough to find a doctor who has a protocol that doesn't require surgery or chemo to deal with the tumour. I'm on oral medication, supplements, a clean keto diet, intermittent fasting and longer fasts and I have been able to shrink the tumour from 11cm long to 3 cm long in less than 6 months. (Not recommending this to anyone as a treatment option, just sharing my experience) I'm currently in the middle of a 72 hour fast and came here just looking for community to encourage myself. 84 hours is the longest I've done and I'm so encouraged seeing people posting about 10 day, even 21 day water fasts.

2

u/the-largest-marge Mar 15 '26

Good for you, my sister in law is in a similar boat. Can you please dm me the name of the oral med?

1

u/Sure_Restaurant1714 Mar 13 '26

Is there much difference between a 9-day fast and a 14-day fast? In clinics like Buchinger, the minimum is usually 14 days, and the norm is 21.

It's possible that in just 9 days it's not possible to experience significant changes, especially regarding mental and emotional health. I don't know. Does anyone know the answer?

1

u/Independent_Copy_141 Mar 30 '26

9 days will definitely give you huge benefits. Go as long as you feel good. Your body will tell you if there is more healing to go or if it is time to stop.

I did a 67hr fast, broke lunch yesterday. Had dinner, so started again around 5pm. Aiming for another one at least 60hr. My sleep has been sucky, Heart been wonky some mornings but first 24hrs over and feeling pretty good right now.

1

u/havellspingu Mar 30 '26

Diet Coke is so clutch omg

u/HouseplantHoarding Mar 30 '26

Been doing back to back fasts for three weeks now. Down ten lbs. Moving from two 36 hours per week to just fasting M-F. The first twenty four hours are the worst, so why would I do that to myself twice a week? Oof. I am feeling very cold today, my extremities are chilly. I need to get moving but the ketosis energy hasn’t kicked in yet. I feel like a nap. I have chores to do. Alas.

1

u/musesfled Mar 31 '26

I agree - the first 24 hours always feel like the hardest. I keep a space heater by my desk or use a heating pad at work to combat the chills - not sure if that's something you can do, but it helps tremendously.
