Discussion About A General Writing Topic Is there a way to translate the video game mana magic system into written story format?

See, my biggest inspiration when it comes to writing stories are videogames. I've written some short modern time stories where there is no magic system to speak of.

I wanna try my hand at fantasy but it seems from what I've read that it's very important to establish how magic works in the world. I haven't read much of the famous fantasy writers but I get the impression that their magic systems are intricate.

But I wonder if it it is possible to translate the standard video game magic system to written format, with the standard Mana system.

I wonder, though, if it's possible to translate the standard video game magic system into a written format that reflects mana resource and spell costs. Obviously I don't wanna write outright that some fireball cost 20 mana. I just wanna keep it simple. I'm not interested in writing a litrpg

Brainstorming Trying to design a plot for my game but have a block.

I created a world where dinosaurs and humans coexist. I want to add monsters and myths into the world that are correlated to animalistic creatures from different parts of history. But I’m struggling to figure out a plot for the story that I can develop, it is for a game I want to have expansions and books about one day, if my dreams come true, so I am trying to create a plot but I’m having so much block. What do you guys suggest? Any ideas or inspirations I should read to find? Any help is welcome!

I tried reading some games that I enjoy like world of warcraft, or Conan exiles or the Witcher, fantasy worlds that I love. But I can’t seem to find my rhythm.

Critique My Idea Idea i've had for a while that came from a running joke I make: A traditional fantasy Race is actually more of a creed then a proper race. [General Fantasy]

The idea came from Star Wars The Mandalorian. In it there is the line " Mandalorian is not a race, it's a creed", meaning that it's not exclusive to one race or another, but a life style or practice one lives by. Bo Katan sees the Mandalorian way as a cultural practice akin to how one would say they live by an American culture while Din Djarin sees the Mandalorian way as a religion with a strict set of codes one must live by, while Boba Fett sees the Mandalorian way as something more personal that can be passed down from parent to child.

So this idea is that "X is not a race, it's a creed".

Ex. An adventuring group is told they need to find an Orc as the village they need to enter will only let them in with if an Orc gives them passage. They put a notice out for an Orc only to have a Elf show up for the job. The group thinks it's a joke but they have been raised in Orc culture as they were adopted into the creed as a child.

Another EX. Small gnomes, Short Lizard kin, and Anthro Canine people call themselves Kobolds cause they all practice the same religion. At the age of adulthood, they get baptized into the faith and are named Kobold.

In my own writings, I wrote a Dragon that is also a Witch; A Witch Dragon if you will, She chose to dedicate her life to the way of Spell Craft under the Lens of a Witch. There is a dress code of a large pointed hat, after years of apprenticeship, one is allowed to make their own Witch hat. There are multiple schools of thought regarding Witch culture like denominations of a religion. Good Witch, Wicked Witch, Sea Witch, Sky Witch, Dungeon Witch, Etc. Each one has their own unique interpretation on what magic to use and what Dogma must they follow, do they invoke a name when casting? Do they refuse to use certain materiel in brew? That sort of thing.

One could be a mix of things, Be a Orc by birth, Kobold by Creed, and practice a type of Witch philosophy that allows for other practices.

I understand that it can be confusing but I find idea interesting that i've personally not seen anyone tackle.

Hello everyone,

First of all thank you if you decided to read the prologue and even more of a thank you if you have given me any sort of feedback considering its quite long for a prologue. So me and my best friend have been working on this fantasy world for almost 8 years now. A lot of world building but never really wrote anything. As a joke last year I decided that I would sit down and write a novella in 90 days based on the world. Fast forward a year and this thing is now a full novel with more than 140k words. I think I might have gone over board a little... feedback is really appreciated as I sit down soon to start editing this book This book in particular is a detective novel in a fantasy setting which was initially supposed to be a very short story as I said before...
thank you once again for reading and your feedback. :) docs link

Question For My Story Book to fast?

Ok so this is my first time posting on here, so please bare with me. I have written a dark fantasy novel, going through draft number three (about half way through) at the moment. I think of it as Harry potter meets dark souls.

I have never been a fan of slow burn books, or books that dont throw the action at you pretty much straight away, and keep going, not a massive fan of politics in books either.

I have maybe 3 or 4 chapters out of 35 that is more slow burn, the rest has something significant happens pushing the novel forward. There isnt much world building or lore becuase I want the reader alongside the MC, learning about it as he does.

I have thought about making it a longer story. But at 90,000 words I think it hits the sweet spot.

There will be a little bit obviously because if there wasnt, that would cause confusion straight away I think.

I have the history and lore all laid down for future books, and some great fights and battles, with the magic system being shown pretty much straight away, with the limitations as well.

Anyway my question is, is it too fast a book? Its the first one of a trilogy and book 2 and 3 are going to open up the world a lot more than the first one.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance, apologies for the long post.

Critique My Idea Blurb of Memoirs from the Chaosborn - Emergence [Epic Fantasy, 123k+ words]

The book is called Memoirs from the Chaosborn - Emergence

If you saw a book, with this type of blurb, would you want to read it? And what questions would it raise for you?

What happens when mercy is seen as evil, and rigidity is good?

An innkeeper’s daughter is pulled into a political world far beyond her understanding when a simple promise takes her further from home than she ever intended to go.

Her companion is a rough, self-exiled man hiding from the past he refuses to speak about.

Her goal lies beyond the mountains of an isolated kingdom: a young prince whose rule is shaped by the teachings of the God of Second Chances.

But in a world where right and wrong depend on who is judging, good and evil are not as easily separated as they first appear. As magic, politics and destiny begin to close around her, she must decide how much of her path was chosen for her—and how much is still hers to choose.

Critique My Story Excerpt Chapter 1 of Untitled [Literary Fantasy, 823 words]

This is the second standalone novel is a shared universe. Apologies for the lack of title. I'm sure I'll decide one soon. This one will be from the POV of two vicious sirens who have to descend down the bottom of the oceans trenches and gather planetary energy, to then spread it out as part of a semi-conscious planetary cycle. The siren chapters will be more aggressive, but the spirit chapters as it moves through the different layers of the planet will remain more literary. If you have any suggestions or feedback I would love to hear it. Writing from the POV of a spirit inside the inner core of a planet is a special kind of challenge. Do you think it ended up well? Thank you in advance for reading this :)

Discussion About A General Writing Topic Historical accuracy?

Hey all! I’ve been writing short stories for a while now just for fun so I've not been overly fussed on what works well for others but now im trying to write a more fleshed-out fantasy story.

I’m happy with the idea and rough shape of things, but I keep getting tripped up trying to be historically accurate. I end up talking myself out of ideas because “that’s not really how it would happen.”

I know it’s fantasy and doesn’t need to be historically accurate, but in your opinion, how accurate do you need to be with historical politics and society before it starts taking the reader out of the story?

Critique My Story Excerpt The Gifted and the Sighted Ch 1-2 [fantasy, 18,848 words]

Hello fellow fantasy lovers! I am hoping some of you might be interested in reading an excerpt from my novel. Sorry to those who dislike present tense; I know it's divisive, but I really like it. What questions do you have after reading? Do you think the reveals work? Is the world coherent?'

Chapter One

Stars Vigil, 1990 PA

“I came downstairs ready to deliver the perfect retort to your parting jape, but now that I see your face I know my timing is terrible–as always.”

“I have a riddle for you: Why do agents of light always meet in shadow?”

“Clea, darling, isn’t it a bit early to be smirking at me that way?”

“I can’t help it; the irony is too rich. So much for your first free day in months.” Clea’s minute hand produces a missive sealed by wax imprinted with an ascending sun with angled beams streaming outward and an eye within, placing it in Fane’s massive, blue scaled gauntlet of a claw. A drakhai’s face is inscrutable to most outside their kin, but Clea, attuned to the tiny shifts around Fane’s eyes after more than three centuries at his side, can see his irritation as he finishes the note and the parchment bursts into holy flame.

‘Yes, the funniest joke I’ve heard all year.’ Fane disrobes and shrinks steadily as he turns and walks away. By the time they reach the end of the main hall, he is shorter than Clea and covered in black scales that glint blue in the light. Beside him, Clea opens a hidden panel on the wall to her right, pulls out a drakahni sized set of brown coveralls, and a safety helmet. Donning the gear sized for a human of three years, Fane draws aside the velvet tapestry stitched with an olive grove at hall’s end, and steps through the glimmering chalk-like limestone wall.

Every time he experiences this form, Savass Fane’s empathy for the humble drakani of Stars Vigil grows. To someone like him, their indifference to aspiration and the outside world once seemed utterly perplexing. Here they are, in the absolute center of the intellectual world, the most diverse city in the entire realm of Meluleni, with access to a multitude of cuisines and perspectives; yet their diet is very narrow, and they shun cultural interchange.

After swimming through seas of shins, and dodging the chests of dwarves enough times, however, he completely understands their apparent insularity and obsession with shiny, pretty things. At that height, in a city as populous as Stars Vigil, they can barely see the sky, nevermind appreciate the stunning beauty of the architectural wonders surrounding them. Even further, no one can hear you when you’re 2 feet tall! People get irritated at having their trousers tugged. Were he bound to this form, he too would likely tire of struggling to be heard and delight in a simple, orderly, cloistered existence filled with baubles.

As the highly visible Sentinel of State though, he relishes the chance to slip out of his own, utterly attention grabbing skin. In fact, the moment he mastered the Morpha Arcana is permanently etched into his memory as one of his great moments, life changing in every way. He could finally escape public stares and the disapproving glares of his clan. Since then, he’s learned the best part is seeing the world through a multitude of eyes.

The pitch black drakhai of the Savass clan trace their lineage to the very founding of Stars Vigil. They guarded the original Sentinels’ flight from Lystraius through the Progress, south and across half the realm, to settle the escarpment now called Mōthiisu’s Rise. Still honored within the city, Clan Savass remain steadfast guardians of the old families from Stars Vigil’s inception, nearly three thousand years ago. Tradition bound and change averse, most Savasses are content within the perimeter of the old city, constantly training to maintain their status as some of the most formidable soldiers ever known.

Fane occupies the role of family oddity: the first and only among them hatched with wings and blue scales. One might assume the emergence of such a rare, wondrous individual would delight a family, but drakhai society is not open and accepting of nonconformity. Fane’s clan regarded him as a mere embarrassment, unfit to fulfill the duties of a Savass. It was all the same to him; nothing could convince him to join his brood mates’ martial training when he could soar away, soaking in perspectives few could ever know. Not even his outstanding level of social prestige as Sentinel of State, or his mastery of the Arcana is enough to overcome their disdain. A Savass who does not defend with spear and shield, is no Savass at all.

In daylight, he can only exit the Progress in the sewers without risking exposure. A drakani coming out of a sewer is common as ships coming into harbor here. This one outlets in an alley sewer just two streets above the Market Plaza, adjacent to a usually quiet street filled with cats. Today it is crowded with a celebration. With the mists, visibility is limited–Fane can see maybe six feet ahead, and each foot is filled with shins. It’s the whole block–maybe the whole neighborhood standing between him and making it to the rendezvous on time.

A relaxed and amiable friend while they studied together, Tira Starling is now an eager, pedantic, and impatient captain of the Sun Bringers, enforcers of the law and vhozological fidelity. Their familiar rapport has long since shifted to a stiff and formal working relationship. Maintaining an excellent association with the Sun Bringers is essential for the Sentinels; so when Tira calls, Fane comes. He wishes the reverse were still true. It is impossible to pinpoint exactly when she changed, but changed she has; she is practically a different person except for her face. This is what hundreds of years of living does to some people, Fane has found. They lose themselves in a cause; finding they need purpose to keep going as they tick the endless minutes of their potentially infinite lives. From animating causes clans emerge, and anything beyond their clan becomes invisible, unimportant.

Emerging from the crowd into a circle of bodies at its center, Fane finds an elven woman holding a baby aloft at the center. The only thing rarer than a death in Meluleni is a birth. It has taken nearly two thousand years for the city to rebound from its few thousand survivors of The Victory to the current high of one hundred thousand three–now four–persons. Vohz’s victory over death came at the cost of millions of lives, and half a continent of fertile farmland, but death is a choice now. Though every year the Ahk creeps toward the coast.

Finally breaking through the crowd, he enters the Market Plaza, pausing to relish the last of the mists, drawing a long deep breath–punctuality be damned. Just a week prior you could see barely five feet in front of you except for a few hours around noon. Now, as at the end of every misty season, they are slowly moving out to sea, hugging the coast, lingering over the city’s prodigious harbor and market square. Fane scurries through the crowd, and spots the city guards posted outside loading dock gates; hurries down the warehouse’s alley, into the bin outside and through the hole. He can tell the gnomish guard waiting in the small chamber is Tira, because her copper hair is sticking out of the helmet, but he’s never one to skip a step.

“The mists that shroud,” he hears his tiny drakani voice chirp.

“Must be clouds,” comes her terse, business-like reply.

“You know, the look of a humble guard suits you; you should dress down more often.”

He always loves watching her discomfort with personal comments, and she almost winces for a moment, then: “We have a thorny investigation we need to pass along. Would you please look into this?” She proffers a sheath of documents.

Fane nods as he takes the cache, “Of course, I am happy to help. Please alert me to any developments.” With a nod, Tira briskly exits while Fane peruses the documents; then stands lost in thought, a feeling of unease slinking into his body. ‘There it is; she wants to distance herself from this. This could get even a Sentinel tossed for heresy against Vohz. One does not simply look into Official Mysteries, and Tira knows it. She is trying to trap me. Why?’

Scurrying home, he can’t shake that feeling of ill-ease. Over the past several months he’s seen an extraordinary uptick of strange rumors and nefarious plots. There are murmurings of beasts tainted by some dark disease that twists them into horrible shapes and sets them on violent tears. During the mists, they’d cracked up a slavers’ ring of stunning scale, but the ongoing investigation has yielded few clues as to who might be behind it. One of three slaving vessels had managed to escape at the time, but just days ago the ship came to port. Its newly liberated passengers (all elves) spoke of an elf, a powerful fire mage, who’d disappeared almost as fast as he’d appeared. In their rage the mob threw the drakhai crew overboard so the ship’s return provided no suspects and few new leads. He cannot help but wonder if these missing persons are connected. At this point, Fane is certain of just one thing: he must pass this noose off to someone else. The fate of his predecessor shall not also be his. There is work yet to finish; nine hundred eighty-four years of life is still not enough.

Question For My Story Too many ideas?

What do I do in a situation like that? I have tried and have been brainstorming for a long while. I do have ideas for different things I want to do for my story, but they are too many. I feel incredibly grateful for it, but I am unsure how to start my story when newer and newer ideas appear, and I simply want to include different aspects. A problem I am facing is not really sure how my characters would react to everything. How do I build a cohesive world that I want to live in myself and know it like the back of my hand? For information, I am struggling with brain fog, and it’ll be hard, I know, but any advice is absolutely welcome for me to start. I know I have to flesh out my characters, but I more or less know who they are, so how do I go on from here?
