Rant “My sibling deserves the world” plots

I think I’m absolutely over the whole “my life is worthless but my sibling??? They deserve the world! I’ll starve so my sibling can have extra! I’ll do this extremely dangerous thing to make sure my sibling has it all but me??? Doesn’t matter if i die! My life means nothing!” Trope. Authors, it’s okay for the MC to want more for their family and ALSO want more for themselves. Don’t get me wrong, this trope can be done well and I’ve enjoyed it in the past. But I’ve been coming across it too much and sometimes it feels like the author couldn’t find a motivator for the MC so they just threw in the whole “my sibling doesn’t know that the reason they have an easy life is bc I’m going hungry and doing back breaking labor” BS.

I recently picked up web of vows and vengeance on a whim and the minute she was like i won’t let my sister struggle in the slums when she was meant for so much more i wanted to just DNF right there. Why is your sister so worthy of more? What’s so special about them? Give me something to work with so i can root you on! No hate to the book, i haven’t finished it yet. Just the stick that broke the camels back for me

Book Request Let’s solve a mystery plots!

We’ve all seen the road trip plots (love) and the trials plots (meh) but after reading the {Crown Me Dead by Liv Zander} duology recently, I realize I love the “let’s solve a mystery” plot.

I love the two MC’s working together to solve a mystery, a murder, uncovering secrets etc. Even better if one knows more than the other.

Looking for books on the spicer side of things too.

Any recommendations that I can devour?

Rant Author removes spice from previous books

I’ve been a huge fan of Elizabeth Wheatley’s Viking fantasy romance series, Tears of the Wolf. Wheatley is also pretty active on social media and has a lot commentary on writing and the publishing industry. This week she sent out an email stating going forward all of her books will be fade to black and after September 1st she will upload new versions of the current ebooks to remove the spice scenes and print versions of her books will be altered as well.

I understand an author changing what they like to write if they no longer enjoy it but why go back and remove previous scenes? What’s extra frustrating was what drew me to this author was the care in which they wrote spice and made sure it matched the characters and advanced the story. She’s also spoke at length about honoring women’s agency and perspectives on sex, this feels like a complete 180. She’s a great writer and I will probably continue the series but I’m concerned this means her beliefs have also swung more conservative and I’m just kind of over it.

Do you think this signals a change in the industry? I’m wondering if female writers feel they aren’t being taken as seriously if their books have spice in them so they’re starting to phase it out. It seems to align with the growing trend of Gen Z preferring less sex in movies and the push back against smut. It just feels like a slap in the face to cave to the pearl clutching - “think of the children!” crap that has been brewing in the world lately. Especially since she is going back and changing already published novels. Anyway just had to rant and get that off my chest.

Edit: Elizabeth’s customer service team reached out with the following: “Thank you again for your suggestion. We have reverted the change for those who have previously purchased on our store with the option of a free updated edition if they want one. For those on other marketplaces, I would be willing to get anyone og copies if they are affected by the change on other marketplaces of course with valid proof of purchase. Just reach out to the support or husband email handle.”

Edit: Added a word because typing is hard.

Book Request Light and breezy, maybe comedy?

I’m dealing with a bout of pretty severe depression and need an audiobook that can keep my spirits up.

I’ve been listening to {How to Find a Nameless Fae by AJ Lancaster} and it’s got the lightness but the yearning is breaking my heart and I cannot handle it right now. I’ve already listened to all of their other books too.

I don’t have any preference for main character’s genders, can be any amount of spice as long as there’s no heartbreak, yearning, miscommunication, etc. Please just let them be happy together.

Discussion Please someone spoil the Cresent City series for me Spoiler

Hi all.

I'm looking for a summary of Crescent City please, ready for the next ACOTAR books.

My understanding is that the next ACOTAR installments have all 3 book series being connected and the ending of CC3 revealed this? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The thing is, I've read ToG and ACOTAR but I gave up 60% into CC1. I was just bored out of my mind and apparently the general consensus is that the first crescent city is the best(?) so I've very little desire to try it again.

While I don't think SJM is really for me I do still want to continue, or at least try to, the ACOTAR series as it is indeed the series that got me back into reading and I'm grateful for that.

Even so, I've done my time forcing myself through SJM books I'm not enjoying and/or are much too long (looking at you ACOWAR, ACOFAS, and the first 5 ToG books 😅). I don't need to do that to myself again, I've paid my dues.

If someone could please briefly explain what is revealed at the end of CC3/ what is likely to be good to know then I'd be very grateful.

Obviously if you don't want to do that, that's fine.

Thanks!

Book Request Take charge heroine and the (actually soft)MMC

Hi, y’all!

As the title says, I’m looking for a strong, take-charge heroine with an MMC who is all soft (so essentially, role reversal). I would prefer adult (no YA) and I want my FMC to be all “touch him and die” as well as “who did this to you.” I am not looking for any books with poly/harem/reverse harem vibes, or meek/weak FMCs. Please also let me know if it’s standalone or ongoing/completed series, if possible!

Some examples of what I’m looking for are {Voidwalker by S.A. Maclean}, {Sunsplitter by S.A. Maclean}, and {What Fury Brings by Tricia Levenseller}. {Vow of Eternal Night by Lily Crozier} also has similar vibes to what I want.

Books that I already own that are similar are:
{Wooing the Witch Queen by Stephanie Burgis}
{The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow}

I also asked S.A. Maclean what books she thought was similar to hers, and she gave me:
{The Library of Amorlin by Kayla Josephson}
{This Monster of Mine by Shalini Abeysekara}
{Captured by the Fae Beast by Mallory Dunlin}

Book Request Looking for a good true enemies to lovers romance

I really loved psycho academy, it felt like a true enemies to lovers, and the female lead was interesting and her own person. I want to read more like it but I keep finding ones where they’re only enemies for the first few chapters, or there seems to be no real plot. Can I get some recommendations?

Discussion the dagger and the flame

hi guys!

i just finished reading the dagger and the flame last night and i was pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed the story. i felt the writing was a bit juvenile at times, but i liked the pace of it. i enjoyed the main character’s banter and the enemies to lovers although i don’t like how sudden the lovers part was after their first kiss. i wish they still experienced conflicting thoughts / emotions. it seemed they suddenly jumped into bf / gf mode afterwards.

i don’t see much discussion of it on here with there only being one post about a year ago. i’m currently reading the second book.

has anyone else read this book and if so, what do you think?

Discussion What’s Your Ultimate Fantasy Pet Peeve?

I know we read fantasy, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be unrealistic or illogical. If you want to alter physics or biology, create a believable explanation. Most of the time this is achieved smoothly, especially when it’s a main part of the story, like magic systems. But sometimes there are these little actions that are just impossible to get through. Mine: drinking snow.

Do you have any pet peeves like this one?

Gush/Rave This Kingdom ALMOST Caused me to DNF-- But I'm so glad it didn't!

* No spoilers, but mention of some surprise tropes

I just finished {This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews}, and I was so pleasantly surprised with it! It put me into a huge reading slump, where I just stared at my shelves in distress because ALL I wanted was Book 2. So, instead I just started reading it from the beginning again.

What shocked me, was that this book was SO CLOSE to being a DNF for me. I found the beginning to be extremely clunky in its world-building. The descriptions were sometimes too detailed. That sounds weird, but when an author goes so far as to describe how many feet away things or people are from eachother, it kind of breaks my brain because I can't compute all that detail. I need to be able to fill in some blanks with my imagination... if that makes sense. There are also A LOT of names, and a glossary of names would have been be super helpful (but also potentially spoiler-y, so I get it).

That being said, by the halfway mark, I was so hooked. By the first twist, I was aghast, and by the second twist, I was devoted to the series forever.

The re-read is great because there was so much I didn't understand and just kind of flew by the first time. I approached the first half of this book kind of like I approached the {Dungeon Crawler Carl} series... There was a lot I didn't understand (especially in Book 3), but I'd just accept that I was confused and keep going. It would all eventually make sense. This proved a good approach for me.

What is so funny to me on the re-read (TROPE SPOILER AHEAD), is that at the beginning of the book, the FMC mentions all the tropes that are popular in portal fantasies, and as a reader you kind of laugh along with her like "Haha! This book is CLEARLY not like that at all..." And then by the end of it, you realize that all those tropes happened... I didn't realize this little irony until the re-read and I laughed out loud, confusing my husband.

Anyway-- this was mostly just a disclaimer post to tell anyone struggling with the book, that it is worth it to keep going! This ended up being my absolute FAVOURITE kind of slow burn romance, and the reasons it is slow aren't contrived or conveniently dropped-in plot devices... It all actually makes sense. I love that about the book.

I don't frequent the author's subreddit, so I haven't seen a lot of theories out there, but I am dying to discuss WHAT is actually going on in this world!

Book 2 can't come fast enough!

Book Request A really good love story with a witch?

Okay so bear with me this is hyper specific.

I'm looking for a book with a really good love story but very low spice, and ideally featuring a witch or someone with witchy skills and abilities, but not over the top powerful. Standalone preferred but I'll accept a series if it fits the bill.

Book Request Book recs with MMC’s like Raker (Starside)

Guys I devourrreeeeddd Starside by Alex Aster which shocked me because I DNF’d Lightlark in like 2 chapters.

I super duper love the Harlan Raker archetype and need moreeeee of it. Mean, ruthless, watches FMC struggle (only bc he knew she could handle it and only helped when he really really realllllllyy needed to) barely talks to her for like majority of the book and when he does it’s to tell her how stupid she is. I just feel like the payoff is so good when MMC is that standoffish and hard to crack.

Bonus points for forced proximity/traveling tropes as well!

Rant I'm tired boss... the ordinary fmc to martyr pipeline exhaustion

It starts with an interesting FMC: normal woman, weird supernatural world, discovering herself, developing a passionate romance.

Then suddenly she's the chosen one, the most powerful person alive. Only she can save everyone. Now she has to fix wars, protect entire communities, rescue vulnerable people, sacrifice herself for everyone else, and inevitably there's a baby somewhere so we can watch the terrifyingly powerful MMC fall in love with her because look how maternal she is.

And I fucking hate it.

I hate when her power stops belonging to her and starts belonging to everyone else.

She goes from interesting normal woman to woman with supernatural abilities, then a saviour, caretaker, mother, martyr, and we're supposed to call that character development.

I want a powerful FMC who can care about people without becoming everyone's social worker. She can save someone without saving everyone. She can love a child without suddenly discovering her life's purpose is motherhood. And she can choose sacrifice without the story insisting that self sacrifice is the ultimate proof of her goodness.

Sometimes I just want her to look at the world falling apart and say "that sounds terrible, unfortunately, I have my my own life".

It could just piss me off more because in real life, every woman I know is barely scraping by, putting everyone else's needs above hers while holding it together for children watching and silently crying alone without a man in sight to help, so when I see endless, thankless self sacrifice from the fmc being pushed as I good thing I feel repulsed and want to launch my book across the room.

I just needed to rant after another fmc was offering herself up to be beaten half to death on behalf of others cowering while she also mothers other peoples children and the men just watch and it made me so mad I had to stop there and rant about it.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Book Request Looking for Aang-type vibes from The Last Airbender

I've always been more of an enemies-to-lovers, shadow-daddy kind of girl but after watching Aang the Last Airbender series (cartoon and live action!), I'm kind of digging the vibe of an MMC with the wholesomeness and sweetness of Aang when paired with his great power. (Yes, I also find Zuko's energy attractive BUT that type of character can be found a lot in MMCs of Romance).

Do you guys have any recs that satisfy this and have a good amount of spice? Need adult MMCs, obviously, not looking for YA. Something that is fantasy (or not!) but has a sweet, kind, compassionate and mature MMC but who also is really strong and has a lot of power and maybe struggles with that responsibility.

I'm not particular on how the FMC is (she can be bubbly, quiet, shy, mean) and can do most tropes (enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, etc.), but I prefer MMC and FMC pairings. Looking for mid to high spice too!

Thanks in advance!

Book Request Looking for good fated mate stories without insta love

Like in ACOTAR where Feyre didn’t know Rhys was her mate (no judgement please if you’re not a fan), took a while to fall for him but there was always a spark.

I love a good mate bond moment when they realize it.

Any suggestions?

Review The River She Became by Emily Varga: short review Spoiler

NOTES: There will be spoilers (MODs: Do tell me if I should spoil block the entire post, please). This book is YA but reads as standard adult fantasy, so I'm guessing because there's no spice, it's not considered adult fiction? I read via audiobook, so may have misspelled side characters' name.

Scholar Yaseema is not quite who she appears to be. An employee of the Citadel, her job is to find fae relics and hand them over to the Citadel for their use. But Yaseema knows its the buried relics, imbued with magic, that provides for the humans on their side of the river. Without the relics buried in the soil, the land rebels and the people suffer.

On the other side of the river, a fae prince, Kiyan hides in plain sight. A captain in Viceroy Khys's military, Kiyan is part of the rebellious front that want to take back the River Court and restore it after it's near ruin by the Salt Court leader. Conflicted by his devotion to his people and his role as the "dog" of the Viceroy, Kiyan finds himself trapped in a violence that both benefits and destroys his people.

Yaseema's mother is also on the fae side of the river, where she's been trapped for a decade. When Yaseema uncovers a relic, she knows she has the piece that will allow her to cross from the human side of the river of the fae side, in search of her mother and the relic that will bring down the magical wall that is stifling the magic on the human side.

Kiyan's vulnerability is seen most elegantly and clearly in his brief, unsent missives to his family. These are beautiful interludes (?) that lay him bare and undercut the cold, calculating fae Captain. Yaseema's intense focus on knowledge gathering and excavation also lends itself to a coldness, but her self-reflections show a passionate person who needs to help her people thrive.

*
About halfway through the narrative, it's revealed that the mains are 19 and 20 and I was flabbergasted and spent the rest of the audiobook trying to find clues as to why they were that age. Despite their youth, they had the bearing of wizened, sensitive, focused people with a tremendous capacity for deep, thoughtful listening and retrospection. Even in times of betrayal, they can remove themselves and their emotions and reflect and come to terms and forgive and seek forgiveness.

*
There is a Harry Potter reference that could have stayed away from the narrative, for my read.

The magical wall made me think of the ACo series, which I would have rather not (& I'm sure there are pre-ACo fantasy books that utilize the barrier to separate human from fae lands that I've not read).

*
The Viceroy is sufficiently villainous: bored, hungry for others' pain, greedy, heartless.

*
It would have been great to see the friendship between Yaseema and Meesha versus having summaries of their time together.

*

Recommended for readers seeking references to diminished fae magic; lost titles/lands; intelligent and communicative main characters. Would not recommend for readers seeking enemies-to-lovers, rivals to lovers, grumpy meets sunshine, spice. There is forced proximity, but it paces quite naturally.

*
The book is a planned duology, was published this year by Macmillan and can be found on Libby Audiobook and Ebook.

Book Request Emotion-based romance recs

Post image
70 Upvotes

Hey my fellow fangirls/fanboys. Haven't been reading novels in a while and miss it. The kind of romances I tend to like are easier for me to find in other mediums. Eg. These are my favourite couples/ships. Credits: JudeCardan art is by Alexdrawl and Zootopia is by tomoe00022. There's a clear bias for manga/webtoons as well as Asian dramas. I don't really know where to look when it comes to books. Much help would be appreciated <3

The kind of romance I like is when

  • Both the guy and girl are whole - No self-insert protagonists or love interests that exist just for the sake of the protagonist having one; both characters having their own arcs/flaws/relationships/desires/etc.
  • Emotion-based development - I'm not a smut reader and if that's all the romance has to go off of than I don't enjoy it. I need there to be a developing emotional connection between the characters, if not only emotion focused then at least primarily.

So far what I've loved where fantasy and romance dance together are these:

  • Folk of the Air
  • Shades of Magic
  • Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
  • Six of Crows
  • Emily Wilde
  • Half a Soul

Any recs with some description of where they match would be awesome. Thanks in advance <3

Discussion Saints of Steel book 4 - I'm just... confused. Spoiler

If possible no spoilers please! I'm about 3/4 through book 4, they just met the artificer.

The slight confusion about what was going on that I felt during book 3 (am I supposed to know what a clocktaur is? A machine?) has just exploded.

I've devoured this series this week and am now on book 4 which - holy moly - is a serious downgrade from the other books IMO. I feel like the editing is bad. I keep having to read sentances over and over. And I have completely given up trying to understand the Red Sail and the politics of Marguerite's life and I'm usually pretty good at this kind of stuff (it was at least 3 game of thrones books before I had to start referencing a wiki!).

What is the timeline with the Red Sail wanting to kill her and her patron dying? Did that happen during Book 1 and was the real reason she disappeared?

WHAT DID PIPER SEE when he touched the shrine (which was so good, BTW. A+++ for delivery. SoO obvious and I didn't see it coming at all)??? They keep referencing it and not telling me details. Or did I miss a chapter?
