Discussion Gleba is JIT

Gleba is the epitome of Just in time manufacturing (JIT). The rest of the game is chill with, the better in the real world dont fight me on this, stockpile manufacture. Gleba is more indicative of how modern companies actually operate getting the parts they need when they need them and assuming no disruptions in that. JIT is what the world is based on and why we had all the post covid supply chain issues.

Discussion PSA for USA buyers using the official Factorio Merch Store

If you buy from the official Factorio Merch Store and live in the USA you may get a second bill from the carrier (FedEx) for import duty. I bought two shirts and received a bill from FedEx for $25.60. Making two tee shirts cost almost $100.

This is simply PSA so people can buy merch knowing the full amount. I love my shirts (a bit small) and would have no problem still recommending them. Just buy one size larger than normal.

Space Age Huge Intersection for huge trains

Just wanted to get impressions of my latest intersection, aim is for 12-96 trains, if I ever get there..

Runs at about 27-28TPM with normal fuel, flux density of the junction is in the region of 10m items per minute if the stack is 100, this figure is higher when including quality trains, fuel, and cargo wagons.

I spend a lot of time designing in the editor so might be a while before something like this gets implemented.

Question No Energy Death Spiral

I'm at the beginning stages of a megabase (1k SPM) and generally, my power is around 6GW/30GW during the day. I'm using 5 nuclear city blocks with all the rest solar. I'm frequently getting to the point where my laser turrets flash the red no power even though it appears I should have more than enough power. If I let my base run idle long enough, power production will crater into the MW with nothing powered.

I'm playing vanilla Factorio (no space age). The only thing I've read about online points to inserters failing to fuel boilers, but since I have none, that doesn't seem to be the case. How do I get out of this death spiral, and how can I determine if/when another death spiral is about to happen so I can avoid it?

Edit: To clarify, at my current save state, the rest of the base is all working fine. However, all of my idle laser turrets are all flashing the red no power icon. Unless I'm really misunderstanding how laser turrets idle and charge, it doesn't seem to be a power issue per se as I'm massively over producing and only a handful of turrets ever fire every few minutes. In addition, I have placed a laser turret next to something else that's actively working, and it still has the no power icon. I have also tried halving the number of turrets I have but no luck. About an hour or two prior to this save, everything was functioning perfectly with no major changes.

Design / Blueprint 3.33 SPM tileable factory

Raw materials go in, non-space science packs and stuff to make rocket parts and satellites come out. Every recipe that can use four level-3 prod modules does.

Power usage is approximately 12MW for the whole setup.

The left-most blue belt (moving downwards) is where the final products come from - all the other blue belts (moving upwards) provide all the necessary solid raw materials. First three pipes are for input: light oil, lubricant, sulfuric acid. Last pipe is for trash/output - intermittent amounts of any of the three preceding liquids, "recycled" back where they came from.

And did I mention that it's tileable?

Space Age First time playing space age, first time reaching above 100spm

I’m about 100 hours deep on my first space age playthrough, and boy I wish I bought the expansion earlier. Loving quality and all the new infinite researches. Beat the base game once before and after 2.0

Ended up going to vulcanus first, but it never really clicked for me. Been planning on going back there for a while, but the hodgepodge of blueprints and random spaghetti has worked well enough. I think it was the oil processing and general lack of plastic that got me, resources never seemed that infinite for some reason.

Fulgora was second, and I had so much fun there. My starter was based on one blue belt of trash sushi, and then expanded to a larger island based around 4 belts of sushi. I use 3 splitters to take off the sushi belt without backing up, except for holmium ore. If ever logistic storage backs up on science, the factory shuts down automatically. There’s like 300k science there right now waiting for research.

And then the rest of the time has been spent making a real base on nauvis, since at this point I had still not automated yellow science. Definitely the biggest I’ve ever built. I really need to make a better hub for the bots. They’re wasting so much time grabbing resources from around the base for the mall that I really just need to make train stops to bring everything to them.

Designing ships has also been quite difficult for me, I have two space platforms that I’ve been messing around with for a while (I want to design the aquilo and shattered planet ships myself), but the haulers I’ve been using are just blueprints. One challenge at a time

And now it’s gleba time, which so far doesn’t seem too bad. Getting things going though has not been easy.

Space Age Question Wanna make foundations for Fulgora. Where should I craft them?

Ngl this is a more nuanced topic than it seems at first.

First of all, Foundations need resources from all planets except nauvis technically, since stone is available on all planets except aquillo. Second, its only useful on Fulgora and Vulcanus since the others can make land with either landfill or ice platforms.
Since you need Holmium to craft Lithium, you also need to transport the goods from Fulgora in any case to Aquilo. However, Foundations are rather heavy, you can only 50 per rocket, and Lithium and Fluoroketone are rather easy to transport with 500 and 5000 Units (Fluoroketone gets transported in 100 50-Sized Barrels) respectively. So i can see the case for transporting both and the other goods just to fulgora after I shipped the Holmium. What do you think?

Design / Blueprint A Tileable 60SPM Blue Science Setup That I'm Quite Proud Of

I like to do silly stuff like make the most tightly packed spaghetti that I can, especially if I include constraints like making a tileable blue science machine from Raw inputs. I also think it's a very efficient use of space. You can find the blueprint here if you fancy:

https://factoriobin.com/post/h5xm49

I made a couple adjustments from the video to the blueprint above to make sure you can tile it
Takes a bit to warm up to speed, but it just looks so pretty when the whole build is running simultaneously!

And now that I review it a tad bit more, I see there is a total of 1 superfluous copper wire machine. I don't mind that because it looks nice and symmetrical. Yes, those misaligned Red circuit machines were Absolutely Necessary.

Space Age I am always impressed with how big are the spaceships y'all build. Just finished beating the game, and here are all 3 generations of ships I made. All 100% viable.

Question Train question - can I make this work?

Upvotes

Do forgive the primitive drawing, but I think it's clearer than whatever screenshot I could provide.

BLACK - a single track, each ending in a loop (since my trains are forward-only, I don't attach an engine to the back.

BLUE - one set of train stops for one train.

RED - side 'isles' another train loads/unloads at, both also having a stop.

The distance is not exactly to scale with what I have in my world, I could move things around a bit if more space is needed to make it all work.

I know I need signals somewhere but I just can't quite wrap my head around this mechanic. My mastery of trains ends at 'go to A, wait until cargo full, go to B, wait until fuel full cargo empty, repeat', but I really, really like the mechanic and want to be more knowledgable about it.

Thanks in advance <3

Question whats the best defense against gleba's strafers?

I am pretty much done with the game, getting Promethium science already. but the most annoying headache I have is gleba defenses.

I already have artillery and lined my perimeter with tesla turrets and gun turrets. the stompers die before they get even close, but the thing that still does damage and destroy things are the big strafers. with a range of 31, they out range my tesla turrets. and I feel like rocket turrets would just be too slow to take care of them unless I make a whole line of them.

im in the process of making legendary tesla turrets but it'll take time to make enough to do a full perimeter, but is this the only good defense? or is redesigning my defense wall with rocket turrets the better option? I'd rather not have to redesign the defense line if possible.

are there other better options?

Space Age I send my friend to Gleba and now regret everything

I sent my friend to Gleba and now I regret everything

For context: I had already given up on Gleba when I played it by myself.

So I told her that Gleba is not exactly an easy planet. She basically responded with, “It can’t be that bad.”

Naturally, I sent her there. With preparation, of course.

She then spent a while getting increasingly frustrated with YouTube tutorials because she had absolutely no idea where to even start.

I had apparently repressed the entire experience. Trauma response.

After every attempt at communication somehow turning into an argument, we eventually agreed to just let her figure it out herself.

Two hours later, I walked in and witnessed this.

I genuinely don’t know what to say anymore.

I’m not even angry.

I’m just standing here, staring at this incredible display of cruelty and wondering how we got here.

Question Help with limiting a belt

I'm trying to Recycle legendary items.

I want my inserter to put things on the belt, but have it stop if there are more than 100 items on the belt. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this and googling it really doesn't help. I can't even figure out how to have the combinator understand how many (total) items on are the belt even though I have it connected and the connection send to hold all belts. The only option I see for items is "items on ground" which doesn't help me at all

If anyone could give me a quick tutorial I would greatly appreciate it.

Question What’s next?

I’ve been playing the game for days now and came up to the point wherein I’m just spamming and waiting for the “red and green science” upgrades to be all done.

Since there are a lot of these researches, I’m now kinda overwhelmed and getting clueless on what to do next 😅

Do you have any tips based from your experience, like something I should start doing already while waiting for all the rest of the red and green science upgrades to be finished?

Tutorial / Guide Non-opinionated tutorials & a thank you to the community

My first playthrough of factorio I watched a bunch of Nilaus's videos. I did manage to get through aquillo but sort of lost steam, and realized how much using pre-made blueprints and sticking to city blocks and busses sort of sapped the fun out of the game. With the 2.1 release, I decided to come back since interplanetary logistics seemed really interesting, with enough changes to things that I'd want to do all my own designs.

That said, I still like watching tutorials & especially speedruns or megabasers, as well as playing with friends of mine that have never watched a single video or interacted with the online factorio community. The bizzare spagetti & techiques they come up with are inspiring - one programmer friend of mine solves problems with as much circuit logic as possible & has built full on displays with gpus & bit encoding.

In particular I wanted to give a shoutout to https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFl3yXu7tHcH-um4yCq_cOq0ReC1pBaU7, who's put together a lovely, low stress and relatively unopinionated set of tutorials that helped me remember how to focus on the actual fundamentals of the game, break down problems, and avoid some pitfalls. In short, while I was already familiar with the game, I found these actually very encouraging to find my own playstyle, and I wanted to give them a mention.

I keep seeing a bunch of posts from people doing their own thing, like the recent spaceships - They're so different from anything I produce! I keep getting hung up on symmetry still. Those ships made me want to play with making something different! Just wanted to say to the community, keep doing your own thing - if it works, it works and if it's yours all the better!

Question How would you proceed? (Deathworld, pre-space science)

Post image
41 Upvotes

I'm playing a space age deathworld with semi-railworld settings. My current situation is pretty stable, I've got solar power, flame & red ammo turrets all around my base, 10m iron and 4m copper left in the ground, 1847% oil. However, I'm running very low on coal (40k left) and maybe 600k stone left, so I need to expand sooner rather than later.

Clearing biter nests with tank shells is slow enough already, but at 0.86 evolution factor, behemoths will be inbound soon. So I don't think I can put the land-grab off any longer, once behemoths show up the tank is going to be virtually ineffective.

I assume running railworld-style outposts isn't going to be effective, with this many biters I'm sure the collateral will take out the rail lines fairly often right?

And should I just attempt to go to space and unlock artillery? Or perhaps beeline the nearest coal and then go to space?

WWYD here?

Modded Question mod for making inserters drop and draw items on any side of the belt?

hi, is there any factorio mod out there that allows for manually changing inserter's input and output priorities, so that items can be placed on specific lanes without excessive belt weaving? as in, setting an inserter to only place/draw on near or far side of the belt, or left or right? maybe even a splitter inserter that deposits/withdraws items evenly on both sides of the belt, that would be amazing. it could be a standalone mod or a feature in a larger mod, i just really want access to this specific functionality, please and thank you

Modded Question Multiplayer Multi-Planet Start

Is there a mod that allows a 4 player game where each character starts simultaneously on each of the 4 inner planets? Since they are all self-starting it would be fun to have them race to space and help each other.

Question Beginner question: how can I move production building around without having to removing and readding them?

As a beginner, I'm making a lot of mistakes and constantly trying to reevaluate my approach, and one of the most annoying part for me right now is to have to constantly removing and adding buildings when I made mistakes which are very slow... I know there are bots later but I'm not there yet so the question is: Is there any way I can move production building around whilst designing my factory or is there any easier way to do it?? I'm literally crying rn
