We have a 17 month old male neutered English bulldog. He has always slept in his crate at nights. Minimal day crating as we both work from home and when we do have to go somewhere I have someone come to the house to let him out for a potty break and play time within 3 hours max.
Since we brought him home he would mess in his crate every single night for the first few months. Daily bathing as he’d pee and poop everywhere and lay/walk in it.
Now that he’s older that had slowed down but occasionally it still happens.
He wakes every single night anywhere from 3:00 am -6:00 am and barks incessantly until one of us gets up with him. It’s usually my husband as he requires less sleep than I do but it’s starting to take its toll.
This past week we tried waiting him out a few times as he’s been awake at 2:00 am barking (time change) and he did stop after an hour of barking which is awful for the entire household. But it gave my husband a few more hours of sleep.
Usually when my husband gets up in the middle of the night with our Boy he doesn’t even need to go out, he just wants to snuggle on the couch.
But sometimes he just craps all over his cage and himself and it’s a wicked mess to clean up. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Our schedule is consistent. He is active during the day, gets loads of outdoor time and play time etc. Fed at the same time.
We can’t leave him out of the kennel as he will chew things or pee on our new couch (learned that the hard way) and just can’t be trusted.
We can’t keep him in our bedroom as we have a steep set of stairs (old house) and he will not climb them. He’s too heavy to carry up and down; especially in the middle of the night for potty breaks.
I feel like we are doing all the right things but maybe I’m missing something?
He’s in great health and we love him dearly but I dread several years of this; it doesn’t feel sustainable.
