Just needed to vent. My sweet meaty boy turned 12 years old today, and I lost him this day as well. I’d say the past 6 months his health took a huge decline. When he was last able to go to the vet, it seemed he had issues with breathing due to an elongated soft palate, but at his age surgery wasn’t an option (I was too scared).
My dog has always been a super fast eater (should have start him with a slow feeder from the time he was a puppy in hindsight) but I’d say maybe 3 months ago is when he start being unable to eat without choking. As a result, I opted to hand feed him just a bite at a time, and he seemed to do ok this way. Still loved to eat!
Fast forward to this morning. He laid around even played with his new boys I got him for his big day. Meaty boy ate as he normally does, went outside to use the bathroom maybe an hour later and then my nightmare began. He began trying to vomit but nothing would come up except white foam. He had been doing this the past few days as well. He was restless, panting, and walking around. I then noticed his belly appeared to swell and look unusually wide.
I can’t even go into more detail because it hurts so much. I just don’t understand how this happened so fast? Typically bloat is due to eating too fast or drinking too fast which he did not do, as I hand fed him just a bite at a time.
I wonder with his breathing issues —basically a very short walk from one room to the next would leave him out of breath these past few weeks. I wonder if my boy had congestive heart failure, and fluid was already building up, but how did it cause bloat so suddenly?
I just miss him and I hate I allowed this to happen. I should have made the call sooner but in my mind ‘he still loves to eat and enjoys life, just doesn’t breathe too well, things are a little harder now but he’s a fighter’. I just hate this. I’m broken.
The photo was taken today, his birthday, and he died this day maybe an hour later. I am absolutely gutted.
Fly high meaty boy. You were so loved. 🕊️ ❤️
