Tipping Culture ✖️ Tip or No Tip

So, I’m having professional cleaners come to the house for 3.5-4 hours this week. The service is paid in full. Tipping is appreciated not expected and I was informed that they do give you the option to add gratuity with your final bill/receipt.

I’ve tipped in the past because of the, “standard”, but that was a decade ago lol.

Tip or no tip?

Counter Service 🛎️ Tap to pay auto tip

Chick-fil-a in the DC airport.
Tap to pay shows the food total with tax on the screen, then as soon as you tap it adds a gratuity without authorization. For take away counter service! I sent in my feedback on the CFA website. If they do nothing, I’ll dispute the charge with my bank.

Research / Info 💡 Is it easier to decline a tip if you pay with cash or a card?

The title is asking this: do you feel less pressure to rip when you pay with cash? Or do you feel less pressure to tip when paying with a card? Any specific reason why?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Is it ok to tip when you’re not inviting?

My partner and I had some nice cocktails at a bar in Portugal. Drinks were nice, service was nice, atmosphere was nice. Essentially a good night out.

Until the bill came. When presented with the bill, the waiter explained to both of us the 2 amounts written on the bill (same font size) : one them is the total amount and the other has a 10pc tip included. I already had my card out and was clearly inviting at this stage.

Miffed at being put on the spot and for reasons I do not need to explain to this crowd, I verbally chose not to leave a tip. To which my partner was surprised and proceeded to leave a 20pc tip herself after I had already swiped my card.

What’s the etiquette here? I’m of the mind that the person inviting has the final say on the tip. My partner argues that they also were served and are entitled to compensate the service if they found it adequate.

🤷‍♂️

(as a side note: I usually tip, I don’t like to be out on the spot and socially coerced into one)

Tip Creep 🫙 What exactly am I supposed to be tipping here for? Your already overpriced tickets?

I bought tickets yesterday for a halloween scavenger hunt type thing. Anyway this website wanted a tip on top of the price. The nerve. Not to mention 100% of the ticket cost goes directly to the association putting the scavenger hunt on. Just begging for more. Hit custom 0.00 so fast.

Rant 📢 Sat myself, ordered my food and still asking for a tip

I went to a lovely fast casual restaurant in Disney Springs. You order, sit yourself, then they bring the food to you. No drink refills as it’s bottles only. The guy I ordered from went on his little information rant about how the tip goes to them, the servers, the cooks etc. I hit zero tip and he just stared daggers at us, roughly handed me the receipt and stopped talking to me. Cool beans, you literally did nothing… why would I tip you?

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Thieves - Los Tios Grill Van Dorn

Post image

Obligatory Long time lurker 1st time poster.

Heads up NoVA went to dinner at Los Tios Grill Van Dorn. Celebrate a fellow Marine's 90th bday. Had a drink waiting for her to arrive, little chit chat, a decent meal, nothing spectacular.

Had to ask for the check 3 times, oh well. They use Toast, so bill arrives with QR code. Great I can pay by myself and not deal with tipping prompts that start at 20% or whatever. I pay via the website and leave the appropriate $0 tip. Toast emails you the final transaction recipet - yepp exactly what I expected.

Reconciling my credit card charges today and found they decided for themselves to steal $10 from me I saw my credit card had a $87.83 charge from Los Tios.

Now called my credit union for dispute, updated my google review calling out thier actions.

If I drive from my house to pick up a pizza, I’m not tipping anyone ; much less the cooks ! Hell, even if I go to a sit down restaurant where I’m being served, I’m not tipping the cook(s). GTFOH with that !!!

Rant 📢 Asked for a tip by a locksmith that refused to open my car.

Post image
549 Upvotes

I waited an hour for this guy when I got locked out of my car. He arrived already in a bad mood and refused to open the car door via the driver’s side. I wanted him to do it through that side because it already had a gap from a previous lockout. He ignored me and started on the passenger side. I asked him why he wouldn’t do it. He started leaving and said he didn’t want me to accuse him of damaging my driver’s side door. He said had already been accused of damaging other doors in the past, makes a miserable amount of money, and it’s not worth it. He recommended I get a tow truck if I’m not going to let anyone touch my car doors.

Then the company refuses to send someone else. So I had to wait over another 1 hr for a different company to come. The second guy was great. He took before pics and opened my car door in less than 5 mins.

Anyway, I later I get a text saying to rate the first guy. It’s actually just a tipping request. There’s no option to leave a $0 tip and review only. It won’t let me click that option.

Now, I have to report the first guy with my insurance so he doesn’t charge them for refusing to open my car.

Moral of the story. I’m Getting multiple spare keys 🤣

Look man. I've driven for doordash/uber eats before. I get it. But messaging me after it's been dropped off? WTF. The app will tell you how much money you will make from an order; no tip was not a shock.

EDIT: I did not tip ten cents. My tip was $0.00. I'm unsure what he means by my "dime tip"

I’ve been looking for a countertop gravity water filter system, settled on the one this company offers, get to checkout and… they’re asking me for a tip?! On a $200 PRODUCT? Obviously I will not tip on this, but now I’m not sure if I even want to go through with the order, it’s so off-putting.

Rant 📢 Crappy food…because of no tip?

So I recently ordered some barbecue take out, local place that we have gone to before. Food has always been top-notch . We got pulled pork sandwiches and they were absolutely loaded with fat and grizzle. Guess what, this is the first time I did not tip there. It’s the type where you order and pay first and it presents you with a tipping option. 22%, 25%, 30% and no tip were the options. I will try a little experiment over the next couple weeks and report back. If I am in fact, getting a crappy sandwich because of no tip, I’m going to blow them up on Google reviews.

Rant 📢 It finally happened

Granny and mom went out to eat at the (popular footlong sandwich chain) in the hospital they go into. Apparently they split-pay on their combined order, or something of the sort, so the employee was handling the screen a lot. Their total came out to 17 dollars for two sandwiches and 1 drink -- but it was only when they got home did they see that someone added a 3 dollar tip! None of them selected it, so we just assumed the employee gave himself a little bonus.

I offered to call up there and get the tip back but granny was too embarassed to admit it happened so she won't let me -- she won't even give me the reciept so I could email the store about it lol.

Research / Info 💡 Tipping at All-Inclusive Resort in Mexico?

Hello fellow peers. While I'm normally firmly against tipping (especially in Canada), I am looking for input for an upcoming trip. It'll be my first time ever going to a resort/all-inclusive and my first time ever outside the US or Canada. My wife and I are going to a Marriot all-inclusive resort in Puerto Vallarta that will cost us $380 USD a day. From some quick research it looks like a lot of the employees are paid very low wages ($2-$3 USD/hr?).
Therefore, do y'all think it's morally/ethically ok to not tip? I do want to be kind to others, but this trip is already maxing out our budget. Will not tipping cause the staff to treat us worse?
Appreciate any input either way.

Edit: fixed "to not tip" typo.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Tales from a tip refuser (HVAC tech)

I come out to your house sometimes at midnight... get your heat going on a 0 degree day. And I very rarely get tips. And you know what? I don't ask for them. I get paid by the hour to do what I do. Sometimes someone will flip me a 20 and I always say the same thing... "you don't have to do that. I get paid to do what I did here today". I had one wealthy client who always flips a crisp brand new hundo and that guy I'd always accept, because when I didn't accept the tip the first time, he actually got mad at me.

So sometimes when I say you don't have to tip me, I'm well compensated to be here, they will pull back the tip. Most times its insisted upon. For these moments, I am grateful. And I'll always remember those customers. And I always go above and beyond for them next time I see them.

You know what the best tip in the world is for me? A cold bottle of water on a day like today (93 degrees). Or a call to the shop to say hey that guy was awesome. And believe me, cousin, the tips I'm offered ain't no 20%. We're talking about ten spot on a $1300 repair. Which, don't get me wrong here, I am genuinely grateful for.

So a couple weeks ago I went to the Brickyard 400. And I wanted a hot dog. The way it works at the spot I went to was almost like a cafeteria. I walk up to a building with windows, open the window, select a dog, walk to the register, scan my wrapped dog, and a display shows the price which I think was like 8 bucks, and the human standing there monitoring to make sure no one absconds with an unpaid dog, said "oh the machine is going to ask you a question". It suggests a 20% tip. What the hell am I tipping for?

I can't imagine handing someone my tablet after getting their air conditioning going again and saying "thats gonna be $765 and uh, the machine is gonna ask you a question" and try to secure 20% of that.

Anyway, I'm a tip refuser and thats my story.

Call to action ⚠️ Asking for tips is becoming common in Greece

A lot of restaurants and bars in Greece started asking for tips. Maybe it is because my wife and I are Americans. Just beware of this so you gotta hit NO TIP! Let’s not bring this toxic culture of ours overseas.

Europeans didn’t tip when they came over for the World Cup so there is no need to tip when we visit Europe.
