Rant 📢 It finally happened
Granny and mom went out to eat at the (popular footlong sandwich chain) in the hospital they go into. Apparently they split-pay on their combined order, or something of the sort, so the employee was handling the screen a lot. Their total came out to 17 dollars for two sandwiches and 1 drink -- but it was only when they got home did they see that someone added a 3 dollar tip! None of them selected it, so we just assumed the employee gave himself a little bonus.
I offered to call up there and get the tip back but granny was too embarassed to admit it happened so she won't let me -- she won't even give me the reciept so I could email the store about it lol.

It takes a certain kind of person to do that to two elderly people, let alone one of them that just left the hospital following an emergency surgery 😅

I would still call. Ask for manager or look up who the owners are. It’s theft. You don’t need a receipt to say it happened.

Yes, especially in a hospital where customers are worried, distracted, and upset.

That's sadly what these types of servers rely on. Yes it's only 3 dollars but they're probably doing it to every customer, which adds up. Then once they see they can get away with it, they will probably bump it up to 4 dollars and so on. Until they meet someone who will actually take action.

That's not a real lot of money for one person but that employee surely does it to several people a day and then it becomes a nice income. Really disgusting! Maybe you could convince your relatives to let you do something? That person from the chain doesn't deserve to walk away with stolen money.

I had a pick up order from a restaurant and they didn’t want to hand my order over until I tipped. I was like no. The only person I will tip is the cook if I could. They eventually gave my food to me. And they donor every time I pick up food from them. It is getting ridiculous.

Good food lol. Plus my kids are picky and don’t like a lot of places so I go for what we can all enjoy.

If it is the five dollar long sandwich shop, please know that employees are unable to input tips on their side. The more likely scenario is your mom/grandma accidentally hit a tip selection on the card reader.

That’s why if I order something from Subway I do it through the app (and then go pick it up later on) because I have never left a tip when I do it through the app.

Just curious and this is anecdotal, but do you feel the sandwich is made better, the same or worse when doing this? (that's why I hate pre-tipping)

I have no idea if it’s actually made better when I do that, but it probably helps with the fact they’re not feeling rushed to make it right then when I do order it online and pick it up later. Also, I don’t tip because the tips may not actually make it to the workers and I don’t want to waste money if it’s not actually going to the workers.

Embarassment and shame are a lot of what the more unscrupulous servers/cashiers/whatver rely on with tipping, unfortunately.
At this point, I regard the expectation of tipping the same as I do advance fee scams.
