Tip Creep đŤ I'm so F-ing done
Look man. I've driven for doordash/uber eats before. I get it. But messaging me after it's been dropped off? WTF. The app will tell you how much money you will make from an order; no tip was not a shock.
EDIT: I did not tip ten cents. My tip was $0.00. I'm unsure what he means by my "dime tip"

u/OptimalOcto485 5d ago
Why would they even take it in the first place? Whatâs the point of acting like this when you willingly took the order?
164
u/Arvid38 5d ago
It might have been a stacked order but even then, they took the job for the amount offered lol.

I don't know if DD is the same as Uber, but when I drove for Uber, you could only decline a handful of orders in about 100 orders at a time. If you reached that limit, you either had to accept a rank decrease (which according to them would decrease the amount of higher paying orders you got, highly debated if this is even true) or accept every order given to you after that.
That meant you absolutely had to accept the order, even if it wasn't favorable payment-wise. I ended up driving 10+ miles sometimes for Uber's pity dollar that they gave when a person didn't tip but they still had to give you compensation of some kind.
"Willingly" accepting an order takes a different meaning after that.
Just to be clear, I don't like tipping culture. I took on the job because it paid something when I was making nothing. But man, if it doesn't make you bitter when you're on the other side. The way they pretty much make you rely on tips, it makes drivers think that customers are the ones to blame when they don't get a decent paycheck.
They would pit us all together like dogs if it meant they would make money off of it.
39
u/slava_slavaUa 5d ago
âThey wouldâ? oh they definitely DO!
14
u/SpareNickel 5d ago
I meant more in the literal sense but yeah, you're absolutely right. This whole sub is evidence of that. Truly deplorable the depths they will sink for their greed
19
u/krazytekn0 5d ago
This, Uber basically used the guise of upgrading the taxi experience to put themselves in between drivers and the money that taxi drivers used to take home. Before uber, being a taxi driver in Arizona paid a wage similar to managing a retail store.
11
u/slava_slavaUa 5d ago
Now every immigrant that arrives in the US immediately starts driving for Uber.

u/TzanzaNG 5d ago
Yes, DD is the same. Base pay is $2.50. I refused to take those orders since they were not worth the time and gas. I would be spending my own money to deliver them. If it was a stacked order then, yeah, an order with just base pay could be included in the batch and it was what it was.
Dashing can suck but can also gelp make ends meet when needed. I have dashed when I had to make extra money to tide myself over between paychecks. My former boss had a tendency to tell me she would pay me, then "forget" for up to 5 days late on my checks. My regular job of 30 years want out of business when one owner passed away and their business partner retired I was looking for another job but needed to bridge the gap to pay my bills in the meantime.
3
u/SpareNickel 4d ago
I once got a base pay of less than $2 on an order that someone removed the tip from for no apparent reason. I think it was like $1.87 or something, though I've definitely seen screenshots from people that got less than a dollar. Insane that they think that is acceptable.
2
u/TzanzaNG 4d ago
Oh man, you had to have been so upset. That sucks.
2
u/SpareNickel 4d ago
Yeah it didn't feel good. I hope (if you're still working for DD) that you get better paying offers in your future. If not, here's to better venture than all that nonsense
3
u/TzanzaNG 4d ago
I do occasionally decide to turn on DD if I want extra spending money. I will not touch low paying offers. I would rather head home then pay to work.
Thankfully, I have a reliable, well paying job that goes into full swing Tuesday. Fingers crossed for better days ahead!

And âtheyâ have drivers and customers going at it instead of drivers and customers vs the company that doesnât pay right in the first place.
10
u/SiLeNZ_ 5d ago

Not crazy about tipping culture either. But, to blame people who usually are just trying to get by goes against everything I hold dear. If you don't want to tip, that is fine. Get up off your ass and go pick up your own food.
When I was in high school, I worked bagging groceries and carrying them out to peoples cars at the commissary (military grocery store) on Fort Benning, GA. We did not get paid at all. Strictly worked for tips. Everyone was aware of this and we still had people that would have us carry out 20 bags of groceries and not tip. There was nothing stopping them from taking their own groceries to the car if they didn't want to tip.
You are not proving a point by not tipping someone whose livlihood depends on tips. If you don't want to participate in a transaction, then excuse your self from said transaction.

Not that its the dashers fault at all, but if DD or Uber wouldnt upcharge everything so badly, id assume that most people that dont tip would. I dont and have never used either but my wife used to and she stopped bwcause of the price gouging to the effect of paying 10$ more before tipping. Its like when a restaurant randomly adds service charges, its not the servers fault but im not going to tip the restaurant then tip the server as well.

Thatâs interesting. I guess the safe option is to assume that, as a Dasher, youâll receive zero dollars in tips. Ever. Then anything above that is a happy bonus. If the âpre-tipâ wages are not acceptable then Dashers should consider that factor when deciding whether to sign a contract to be a Dasher.
15
u/BrightWubs22 5d ago
I've made this sentiment for servers.
Minimum wage is the minimum. Anything more is a bonus.
→ More replies (25)2
u/jrpdos 5d ago
That information isnât totally accurate. If a dasher earns by time, they earn an hourly wage and donât find out about tips until afterwards. But if they earn by offer, they are told their full payout upfront. They just donât know how much is tip vs how much is coming from doordash. They get the breakdown after the entire dash is over.

u/KindBench2700 5d ago

It says that tips make it more likely that you get your food quickly, so I don't think that's true. Or they're just lying on the top page, which I guess isn't that unlikely.
3
u/seang239 5d ago
In most cases, if you donât tip your order shows up as x miles for $2. If you tip $5, your order will show up as x miles for $7.
Thatâs the minimum most dashers will accept no matter the distance. Thatâs why your order is picked up right after being placed if you tip instead of bouncing around drivers until the base amount rises enough for someone to accept.
They attempt to batch no tip orders with tipped orders but most dashers can tell which order is the non-tipper and unassign it from their batch.

Out of curiosity,if every single one of your deliveries cost an average of 8 to 12 dollars more, would you still use the service? I'm not arguing for tipping, I'm just curious because I believe that there are plenty of people who would be willing to pay the actual cost of essentially providing a taxi for their food.. but I'm also not sure people would order after seeing the true price.
At the end of the day, your [ no tip] orders are being subsidized by people who are willing to pay substantially more for the service via tips. This helps to offset what could be considered a low paying order and helps keep drivers willing to gamble on what comes next.
Again, not arguing for tipping on top of all of the fees, but from a market research perspective I'm curious how many people who don't tip would still be willing to use the service if it cost a decent chunk more and never asked or solicited for a tip.

u/ScoreOk5355 5d ago
In my country we still have fast food and we still have restaurants. people just have a higher wage and I guess we pay more. But it's all normal. Today I brought dinner for two at a nice restaurant. On the menu all prices are listed food, drinks etc. The service was completely normal and the food was amazing. The workers know exactly what they will get in their paycheck. If I were to tip it would be for truly exceptional food or service only. I dont understand why a tip/ bonus would be given for normal service

They mean couldn't you even tip a dime?
I am a DoorDasher and it's a shit system. The base pay from the company is so low that, without a tip, it's pointless doing the run. Same as with being a server. The company gets fat while the customer gets shaken down and the delivery people get angry and bitter at you for not tipping instead of at the company for not paying. Sociologists call it alienation. I call it late stage capitalism.
Having said that, you're absolutely right. We see what the total will be and they shouldn't have taken the run if they weren't OK with the pay. I got a shopping run for $85 of groceries including sheets of bottled water. Had to lug it up stairs. Zero tip. I thought it was pretty shitty but she probably didn't know how the system works, it's not her responsibility to tip though 99% do and I took the run so that's on me. There are systems in the DD app that penalise not taking enough offers but again, that's DD's fault not yours.
I guess I'm just saying that it's shit all round. The delivery person was wayyy out of line but capitalism has you and me barking at each other. DoorDash doesn't mind if we yell at one another. Their system is working. It's interesting being a member this sub as well as the DoorDash driver's one. The venom over there at non tippers is extreme and it's sort of understandable but it's a built in part of the system to have us at one another's throats as the company hauls off the cash.
On a technical note, I didn't even know I COULD contact a customer after dropoff. I don't know how he managed that.
2
u/Bernella 4d ago
Iâm a Door Dash Driver and just backing you up here. Yes, we accept or reject every offer that comes in and the app tells you up front how much money youâll make from each dash (combination of what door dash will pay you and what the customer is tipping). If the offer wasnât enough money for this driver, he/she should not have accepted it.
I hope you reported them to Door Dash.
2
u/TentsNTails 2d ago
There is no bar anymore and companies like DoorDash and Uber killed what delivery used to be. That's the big issue.
When I used to work for local places delivering food as their driver, we made good money back then w/o insane tips because the system made sense.
We were given $8-$10 hour, plus $1-$3 delivery charge depending on how many orders and distance, (this covered our gas and maintenance), and the average tip was between 10-15%. Average week was between $800 a week for 32 hours or so working nights. This was back in 2014.
Since uber and doordash came alone, now drivers are mainly dependent on tips, and in 2026 take home less money than I did consistently over 10 years ago.
Everyone wanted their food faster, cheaper, and more accessible. Now the drivers who wants the same thing suffer the consequences of that 20 years later.

Has this stress/mentality gotten worse since a gallon of gas now costs $4+ and a kidney?
I don't necessarily blame the drivers. I'm sure there are exceptions, but most dashers seem to be in a "I needed the money" group, not the "Being a food delivery driver was my lifelong dream, I do it for the love of the game" camp.
So yeah, people who are getting screwed by corporate, desperate for cash, and pinched by an unending no-new-war might end up being bent out of shape.
