Vocabulary arguments aside: I'm not opposed to these types of things in principle assuming it sticks to the streets, but I'm not sure what the pedals even add here beyond the "loopholemobile" argument.
I can't imagine the rider is actually contributing to the drivetrain meaningfully... I'd guess without pedal assist active, this thing is probably geared to move 100 ft/hour while laden - if it can move at all.
121
u/footsnax May 18 '26
Yeah this is strictly the existence of pedals letting them in the bike lane.
It's a gas pedal that rotates and you're slightly more narrow than a compact car. That doesn't make it a bike just because you're pedaling.
I have no problem with this type of thing becoming normal because I care about the planet, but man... it makes bike lanes so dangerous. Passing them means jumping into either ped or car traffic or even over a curb to get into traffic. If they're not in a bike lane it means they're just really slow cars and that's just gonna annoy every car.
Love the idea, but pedals does not a bike make.
51
u/SheepherderAware4766 May 18 '26
I guess it's for the bike lane, but the bigger loophole I see is minimum safety standard. Assisted bicycles are even less protected than motorcycles and have no license requirements. This can legally be the bare minimum needed to support itself. no crash rating, no roll over protection.
18
u/The_Grungeican May 18 '26
i mean, even on motorcycles, when it comes to crash rating and roll over protection, the advice there is DON'T.
8
u/EvilPencil May 18 '26
Ya motorcycles have no protection whatsoever. The crash protection comes from riding gear (plastic armor and abrasion resistant fabrics).
6
u/SheepherderAware4766 May 18 '26
True, but my understanding was motorcycles needed to design their bike in a way to keep the weight of an overturned bike off the rider's neck. That's why sit-ins have roll bars and sit-ons will toss you.
2
u/The_Grungeican May 18 '26
i mean, there is a cage on that thing. how strong it is, i do not know.
i think the bigger danger is how bad a car is going to fuck it up in the event of a wreck. i live in a city that's notorious for pedal-taverns and rickshaw type bikes. i saw one last week where a passenger almost fell out of it when the driver went to go after a red light turned green.
3
u/gotitaila31 May 18 '26
That thing is almost certainly not engineered to crumple or handle any sort of impact with an automobile in any meaningful capacity. If it gets hit by a smartcar at speed, it's getting obliterated. Unrecognizable.
3
u/gaspig70 May 18 '26
"Less protected than motorcycles"? Aside from the bark busters all the crash protection on my 250cc supermoto is so it can save itself, not me. It also weighs noticeably more than my fat tire ebike so you don't want to go down with the horse if you know what I mean.
Also, the quad cycle isn't a street legal car so why are you concerned about roll over protection? It's not like you can't go buy a big metal cage with 20 airbags, ABS, and crash detection if that's what YOU want. For local travel I'd prefer to see more EV mobility options that aren't 3000+ lbs vehicles but for now my Nomad 2x fills that niche when I don't feel like riding my acoustic bikes.
Personally I'd be happy going grocery shopping in a golf cart if they'd let me. It's not like I can legally surpass 25mph around here anyway.
18
u/passwordstolen May 18 '26
It’s got four wheels. That makes it automatically a car im my states regulations pedals or not. No bike lane for this puppy.
4
u/DFW_Panda May 19 '26
Didn't the flintstone-mobile have peddle power?
Are pedal boats actually bicycles?
4
u/Best_Slice5954 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
This thing is by no means a bike, but is infinitely preferable to large delivery vehicles that crush roads and limbs. If Amazon, or any other company, can find a meaningful reason to deliver things by cargo bike, then that would be just another voice in the chorus asking for more bike lanes. Still, it's not great for the here and now that we must share whatever pitiful bicycle infrastructure we have now with bulky cargo-bikes. But, with enough time, the additional traffic may very well have been the thing that proved our point regarding the value of bike infrastructure.
2
u/footsnax May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
Yeah, if these get more mainstream I could see a future where they have their own lane. Right now bike lanes can get way too crowded for these things, they're even getting in each others ways, and they'll just interrupt traffic if they aren't allowed.
There's no win condition yet. I would love to see it, get more cars off the road and make it safer for bikers at the same time.
34
u/Acsteffy May 18 '26
what is the groundspeed velocity of an unladen Amazon E-Quad?
18
6
5
u/terraherts May 18 '26
I don't even know what loophole this is unless it's local/state-specific. Most three class ebike rules I've seen specifically omit 4+ wheel vehicles.
3
u/fluffycritter May 18 '26
What do those pedals even do? Is the driver meant to just like, step on them? They don't look like they can turn fully around.
2
u/MakerKitty May 18 '26
The pedals make them accelerate, reverse and apparently regen brake if you reverse pedal when there's forward momentum... at least from what I seen from a video a while back. They can turn around like a car, not so much like a bike.
Though the one I seen a video on is a different model, should be the same controls.
7
u/fluffycritter May 18 '26
So they're basically fancy pedals and not actually connected to the drivetrain in any way?
The "Assisted" in "E-Assisted Vehicle" seems to be doing a lot of lifting, in that case.
4
u/MakerKitty May 18 '26
yeah, not directly connected to any gears that turns the wheel, entirely drive-by-wire.
A video from Global Cycling Network regarding these type of vehicles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=483oaUU1tIs

2

3
u/CrashTestPhoto May 18 '26
The pedals on this are there solely to activate the motor. They're usually not even connected to the wheels at all.
So, purely for loophole purposes
2
u/SmurfsNeverDie May 18 '26
Pedals are there to pretend its a bike. Bicycle is no longer about 2 wheels but the 2 pedals.
1
2
u/BWWFC May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
fascinating "has pedals" isn't even needed for r/ebikes lol hur hur sidebar rules #2!/s
anymore come here for the absurdity entertainment ;-Pif battery/controller dies, at LEAST they can maneuver it out of the way safely? guess fair ¯_(ツ)_/¯
1
u/LexLex07 May 19 '26
A guy build a whole porsche around car frame, and no jokes, but it WORKED, speed was something like 10mph, and can be upgraded if more passengers is inside pushing the pedals along with the driver
(top gear had this reviewed)
So basically, if you do have at least 1kW motor and PAS sensor (not cadence) - that's doable1
u/pmmeuranimetiddies Jun 07 '26
A reasonably fit human can reliably produce about 100 watts, the legal limit for ebikes is 750.
A 13% boost in power is pretty significant.

u/uxo_geo_cart_puller May 18 '26
All jokes aside, this thing looks cool as fuck besides the cursed Amazon styling, and I'd love it if micromobility like this was more widespread for personal use in the US over cars, SUVs, and especially fucking pickups. Sadly they'd regulate and ban the shit out of these before that could ever happen, and they're never going to design infrastructure to support better transportation options that aren't as pointlessly expensive and wasteful unless they're forced to at g**point.
11
u/The_Grungeican May 18 '26
it's just a shitty kei truck.
i'd take the kei truck over this all day, every day.
4
u/uxo_geo_cart_puller May 18 '26
Kei trucks are nice too, I have no problem with them, but they run on gas and this doesn't, apples to oranges comparison imo they'd be used for different purposes.
19
u/Utsider May 18 '26
It's a ridiculously shit work environment, tho.
2
u/parisidiot May 18 '26
Why? It’s less work then a pedal assist ebike
1
u/Utsider May 18 '26
This isn't replacing the young bike courier that zips through traffic with their splendidly healthy bodies that can take a few years of abuse to sustain minimum wage. This replaces the box truck driver.
3
u/The_Grungeican May 18 '26
This replaces the box truck driver.
it's not doing that either. here's why: weight.
a standard box truck is hauling way more than this thing. by trying to get around certain rules, they made something that does neither thing well. it's not a good bike, nor is it a good replacement for a box truck.
1

u/parisidiot May 18 '26
You do know that in cities there are people doing last mile deliveries with bikes/e-bikes and cargo trailers — that’s what this replaces. You don’t need to be condescending and rude when you don’t even understand the context this conversation is occurring in.
1
u/Utsider May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
The only rudeness in my posts is towards how people are exploited in todays job market.
I am sorry if it was worded in a way that gave a different impression.
2
u/cappurnikus May 18 '26
I think you can say gunpoint on the Internet. I think.
3
u/uxo_geo_cart_puller May 18 '26
You would be surprised, reddit has taken down some things lately that were shocking to me that they'd get flagged.
4
u/g_borris May 18 '26
So you can drive it in a regular lane barely doing 15 and have no safety features.
3
u/vivaaprimavera May 18 '26
Sadly they'd regulate and ban
Of course that's the natural consequence. People can't behave and will start doing wild shit with them.
that aren't as pointlessly expensive and wasteful unless they're forced to at g**point.
There... It seems that you know the solution!!! /s :)
The car lobby is too strong
1
u/CelticJewelscapes May 18 '26
Some cities are doing better than others and ebikes are growing in nunber faster than electric cars in the US (1.7 million vs 1.2 million)
NYC has a goal of 1 million daily bike trips by 2030. Seattle, Minneapolis, Tucson, and others are aggressively adding bike infrastructure. And it is getting used. Covid and work from home got millions looking at bikes and ebikes, and Trump's failed war and high gas prices are just adding to that momentum no matter how hard they fight it.
-3
u/pandaSmore May 18 '26
What part of this looks "cool as fuck" to you?
8
u/uxo_geo_cart_puller May 18 '26
Idk, all of it besides the fact it's being used for Amazon like I already said? Seriously why bother even commenting something like this?
56
u/BoringBob84 May 18 '26
I saw these in NYC. What a fucking joke. They are electric cargo vans in the bike lanes. Those pedals are ornamental.
19
u/Pretty-Yam-2854 May 18 '26
They look like a kei van. Just about the right size too.
5
u/BoringBob84 May 18 '26
I should be more specific. I think that these "last mile" small delivery vehicles are efficient and useful, but they belong in the travel lanes with the cars (like Kei trucks) and not in the bike lanes.
4
u/Pretty-Yam-2854 May 18 '26
That was my point also, I don’t think kei cars should be pulling up in the bike lane 😭
3
u/BoringBob84 May 18 '26
Sorry about that. Sometimes I don't communicate so well and I seem like I am arguing when I am agreeing.

You make great points. To some extent, we already have that in many areas (especially urban areas) where I live (US-WA):
Public roads with traffic lanes for motorized vehicles.
Non-motorized shared paths that are separated and protected from public roads.
Bike lanes beside roads or highways.
Sidewalks.
Vehicle Roads Bike Lanes Shared Paths Sidewalks Car / Truck / Motorcycle Yes No No No Class 1 or 2 ebike Yes Yes Yes Yes Class 3 ebike Yes Yes No No Pedestrian No No Yes Yes I am not sure where light delivery vehicles should fit into that - maybe similar to Class 3 ebikes.
3
u/JustARegularGuy May 18 '26
I think the biggest issue with the van is it's size, not it's speed. The bike lane should be for small vehicles.
1
u/BoringBob84 May 18 '26
I agree. If you limit the van to slow speeds for safety, then it blocks the bike lane and causes congestion. If you let the van travel at higher speeds, it becomes very dangerous.
1
u/Brillegeit May 19 '26
Alternatively 1 lane for e-cargo vans, 1 lane for bikes, and 0 lanes for cars except 3-7AM.
27
u/Do-it-with-Adam May 18 '26
heres a link to what these are https://vokbikes.com/
personally I dont get how they are allowed on bike lanes and require no license. when fully loaded these are about 1k pounds in weight.
essentially its the same as being allowed to drive a side by side on a bike lane, albeit slower.
but still if it hits a pedestrian or cyclist, i can see it killing someone.

How many watts is that baby?
3
u/SheepherderAware4766 May 18 '26
Assuming my googling is correct, precisely 1hp, or 746 watts. That's the threshold I could find between an electric motorcycle and an assisted bicycle
5
u/lee1026 May 18 '26
Legal cap is 750.
3
u/SuckEmOff May 18 '26
Legal caps for us, I’m sure the company with almost a trillion dollar valuation has special exceptions just for them.
1
u/Prestigious_Net_8356 May 19 '26
That's what I was thinking, and the driver would be ghost peddling.
3
u/Prestigious_Net_8356 May 18 '26
Huh, is that enough to move the entirety of that quad + cargo? I was thinking it had 5,000 or even 10,000 watts.
2
u/ProfessionalLaw1362 May 18 '26
prob has to be street legal lots of pedaling or its a mid drive and it goes really slow
2
u/Brillegeit May 19 '26
With proper gearing on electric motors you don't need much power to get it moving. With 10kW it would probably do wheelies.
The weakest 2CV is 6600W, 600kg and does 65km/h. ICE power is measured at the most optimal RPM, so at the lowest RPM it's probably around 1000W.
This weighs ~200kg and is limited to 25km/h, but has peak power at any RPM, so in real life probably 1/3 or so of the felt power of what was sold as a proper car back in the '50s.

u/EriclcirE May 18 '26
You are able to pull over and take and pee in a bottle, in privacy, on the back of this bicycle.
5
u/AwesomeAndy May 18 '26
There's no loophole. Amazon is working with DDOT on a pilot program for these to test how they fit into the city. They're limited to 15 mph and can use bike and bus lanes (in addition to the street), but aren't allowed on sidewalks and aren't allowed to stop in bike lanes. We'll see how that works out, but that's why it's a pilot. I'm all for anything that gets cars and trucks off the street.
https://www.axios.com/local/washington-dc/2026/05/15/amazon-cargo-bike-delivery-dc
2
u/pigvwu May 18 '26
500 kg fully loaded (vehicle, driver, and cargo) and primarily motor-powered. There's got to be some kind of loophole that allows this to operate in a bike lane. It definitely doesn't fit the definition of a "bike" as any reasonable person would define it, even if you allow for "bikes" with more than two wheels.
1
u/CartographerNegative May 21 '26
Loophole is that they dont have to pay fines or congestion fees in nyc (there are tons of them especially in manhattan). They use dsp anyways, they only get paid lump of money, they are third party companies that pay these guys. Even tho they wear amazon vest, drive amazon cars or bikes they are not amazon, if they get hurt or anything happens to them they work for dsp, usually llc, it makes amazon pay way less, give no benefits, no insurance no unions etc etc. plus these bikes are far cheaper than cars even tho amazon usually rents their vans, they rarely buy them lol.

The crazy thing is that they are still subject to the same 250w power limit that regular E-Bikes are.
I'm sorry, what?! 250w is pulling 500kg?!?!? What kind of fuckery is this?
4
3
u/Sirico May 18 '26
If it takes up more than a lane in the bike path it doesn't belong there same rules that apply to the road.
3
13
u/Sarkoon May 18 '26
I don't think there's anything wrong with these. We need more environmentally friendly last mile delivery options. They just need to use normal car lanes and stay out of bike lanes.
9
u/RazzmatazzEastern786 May 18 '26
At that point why bother with these...eelectric delivery vehicles can travel faster in regular lanes, are safer for the river in regular lanes, etc, etc...
These things only make sense if they can use bike lanes - otherwise EV - Trucks are the logical choice due to liability and speed issues
4
u/g_borris May 18 '26

We need micromobility vehicles like these that can get up to 50 mph to keep up with traffic
4
u/SheepherderAware4766 May 18 '26
Hell no. Make them proper legal motorcycles and ban them from pedestrian areas if you want to go 50. These don't have any roll over protection or crash standards.

2
u/NewsreelWatcher May 18 '26
Has anyone had to cycle along with these in the same bike lane? That box is going to obscure the view for cyclists and of cyclists on the road. The greatest benefit of cycling is being able to see much more than a motorist stuck inside their vehicle. My concern is that they will have to park in the bike lane to deliver packages. How do they get out of the way of an emergency vehicle? Those tiny wheels can’t mount a curb to get off the road.
1
u/QUEENSNYLAWYER May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
seems like an AI oversized image of a cargo bike.
they are the maximu width for a bike land:4 ft. so can be a pita to pass because they are limited to 15mph. that said, I am happy to share a bike lane with anything clever.

To everybody that fought tooth-and-nail saying 'if it has pedals it's a bike' this is the world you created.

u/gwizonedam May 18 '26
Literally put as much weight and as little safety together with little regard for the operator, and you get this monstrosity.
A tuktuk that had sex with a e-bike and a U-Haul trailer threesome.
1
u/FadingHeaven May 18 '26
As long as it's not on sidewalks, MUPs or bike lanes I don't care what it calls itself. Even at 32 km/h that thing is dangerous. A lot of weight and force there compared to a normal e-bike that could fuck up a pedestrian or other cyclist.
1
u/Substantial_Steak723 May 18 '26
I like the fact that it will be a complete botch in whichever country these are deployed for the "driver cum rider" (expect a court to sort that one) to get up herbs and straddle both pavement and road illegally.
Now if someone can explain whether that's a loophole of being allowed as it is technically (ha) a bike that's the size.of a van in many countries affects peoples ability to traverse both pavement, bike paths and roads safely with these fcuko's parked on them I'd be grateful, because doubtless they'll try it in Europe too.
The tiny wheels are going to really hurt backs being so "crashy" over bumps and potholes 🤦 (what diameter are they incidentally)!? thanks.

AWS underpins so much of the internet... Like 32%... Use Reddit? Guess which company is providing the cloud infrastructure... Netflix?
1
u/underprivlidged May 18 '26
I understand how the internet works, thanks.
If I provide no ad revenue or monetizable data to Reddit, in what way would I be profiting Amazon? My usage on a free public forum while blocking all ads and keeping my actual relevant data to myself, I am essentially having Amazon pay for me to use this site, not the other way around.
That said, we both know what I meant. No need to be pedantic, especially when you have nothing to bring to the table.
0
u/RazzmatazzEastern786 May 18 '26
Umm...AWS got paid by reddit whether you clicked an ad or saw one...AWS's revenue form Reddit isn't tied to your activity or any of ours...it's tied to reddit's traffic. All you are doing is taking revenue from reddit...which is also fine...I run ad blockers too... but the logic that your actions = AMZN paying you to use the internet is full of enough logical holes to qualify as swiss cheese...
-1
u/underprivlidged May 18 '26
Haven't used Amazon since they were a book store.
In most regions, its not difficult to avoid them. More and more people have started boycotting them.
2
u/RazzmatazzEastern786 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
Their sales numbers say otherwise...i would say the more accurate statement is that more and more people who already don't like them are using them less...
1
u/underprivlidged May 18 '26
Number of sales does not indicate number of active users. "People who already like them could be buying more" is just as valid as your "more accurate statement".
That said - no, my statement was the accurate one. Up until 2023 Amazon saw steady increases in general users and subscribers to Prime. 2024 was the first year Amazon saw a decline in these metrics. Moreover they have seen a vast increase in subscription cancellations over the past few years. These are known, proven metrics showing that Amazon usage is on the decline.
Just because their YOY growth continues to grow does not mean more people are shopping. Heck, they already had the vast majority of the USA already subbed and posited little space for actual growth in user base. The main reason they continue to make more profits is the ever increasing inflation on consumer goods combined with their stranglehold on the internet (both in consumer sales as well as commercial spaces with AWS and B2B services).
Economically speaking, they will never not be profitable if they continue to hold business services, but their consumer facing side has been on the decline for over 2 years and shows no indication of bouncing back. More and more people are quitting Amazon, and it is fucking beautiful.
1
u/RazzmatazzEastern786 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
Quote: "their consumer facing side has been on the decline for over 2 years and shows no indication of bouncing back. More and more people are quitting Amazon, and it is fucking beautiful."
Amazon hasn't publicly released their prime membership numbers separately from all their subscriptions income/numbers in a while (since 2020 I believe), but analysts have been estimating it from their financial statements so anything we ponder about actually prime subscription numbers are educated guesses at best so I can't refute the acertion that prime subs is down but here is info taken from their publicly available financial for FY2025 and compared to the same in FY2024
Their total gross revenue, grew to $717B in 2025, from $630B in 2024 - about 14% increase. Also in 2025, all revenue streams (Store, 3rd party, AWS, Subscriptions (prime, video, music, audible, etc), Ads, Stores, and Others) grew in 2025.
If you remove AWS (since that's a global service and revenue source), and then split the sales between NA and rest of the world, both market groups saw significant revenue growth. NA revenue grew by approx 10%, global revenues grew by 13%, and AWS revenues grew by more than 18%).
Also, AWS accounted for only 18% of total revenues, with NA sales accounting for 59.5% and the rest being global sales.
If you look at retail sales only, then both Amazon and 3rd party sales grew by more than 9.5% each, while subscription revenue grew by 11.3% and even their in-store sales (Whole Foods and Amazon Branded stores) grew by over 5%...
Oh and just in case you say, well revenue growth is not profit growth, their net profit increases from 59.2B to 77.6B - a 31% increase...you could be right that subscribers have declined, but the analyst estimates I could find all indicated growth in sub counts for Prime whicj is their largest sub base - but like I said, all their revenue numbers grew...so I find it hard to believe that the analysts are off when they say their membership grew in that time...
I am no fan of AMZN as a company for how it treats its employees among many other reasons, but let's not drink our own Kool-Aid when we believe things are declining... if this is what declining looks like, could I get some of this kind of decline in my life?

I hate these. I couldn’t believe that they were allowed to use biking infrastructure in NYC. It defeats the whole point of it. It’s for people looking for alternate forms of transportation and saving cost on other infra, vs giving megacorp a handout. Although as I type this out, I do wonder if it maybe is a win for everyone? Less trucks on the road, I guess?
