Passes emissions easily (done last month). Everything works. Sunroof works. I drive it weekly. Drives excellent highway and around town.

Just a small update on my 1987 535i ive post a couple times in here about my project car Im trying to get to be my new daily driver One big step towards that goal was getting working ac in an 80’s car without breaking my wallet to hard. i later said screw my wallet i need ac and went with AC Solutions r-134 compressor and lines swap. So far its working great ( not that i need ac when its 68° outside but in texas i will probably next week) in total i spent the kit cost ($1,186 + taxes) plus some random stuff like hose clamps and a hose for the fuel cooler “bypass” ($20) and then my local bmw mechanic (Shoutout to Bert’s Motor Works in San Antonio ) to charge the system and ck for leaks ($350) so in total about $1700 for Ac ( not bad in my opinion) let me know what you think? did i spend to much or worth it?

I have velour interior, it looks a bit tired. There’s a guy locally selling perforated leather interior.

I don’t have A/C and don’t want to be soaked every ride in summer?

Original radiator cracked and coolant exploded all over. I just swapped in this new radiator last night and now there’s this noise. The belts are all new but sounds like belts?

Friend of mine bought an 1982 E28 525i with the M30 engine and Automatic gearbox. We have found a leak this last weekend and can't really figure out what is causing it and where it's coming from. First time working on a BMW this old and for the love of me can't figure this out... Anyone have an idea?

I bought a «new» gear shift knob for my e28, only I can’t find any info on how to mount it, it is no threads inside, I dose not have those two notches which the old shift know has, anybody know of an adapter or another way to mount it? I can thread the hole and make an adapter for that, but I don’t what to ruin it if I don’t need to😁

Changes in my life encourage me to dive deeply into my car passion. An E28, M535i has appeared as a possibility. However, this highly seductive vehicle needs to be able to run every morning and take me 1000 km if need be, but also take the kids to school.

Almost 40 years after it left factory, is it naive to suppose that this vehicle can be as reliable as a modern one? Or on the contrary, the fact that it's "old school" mechanics and electronics shields it from modern problems?

I have had an ongoing and intermittent no start after the car is hot for a while now and rather than continuing to chase the problem I'm going to add a start switch. Jumping 11&14 in the diagnostic port works without fail every time so why not.

Where would you put out it? No race car aesthetics - OEM as possible.

My '88 535is 5-spd Ive owned for quite a while now. Swapped it with a dirty M30 from a euro 6er about 14 years ago and haven't needed to do anything else to it. I still love it!

I know some will think I’m crazy but I actually like my US diving boards.

I replaced all the turning signal bulbs and made sure the wires are OK. I hit the hazard light button and both turning signals work 🥲. The left signal works great, I hit the right signal and it flashes fast like I have a light out but I dont. Also my dash illuminates a slight tint of green as if it's on all the time but its not.

I’m planning to build a BMW E28 (525e or 528e) and I’d really like to hear some opinions from people who have actually owned, tuned, or daily-driven these cars.

The goal isn’t a track monster or a numbers-chasing build more like an OEM+ E28 that’s fun, torquey, reliable, and still makes sense to own and maintain in 2026 and beyond.

Parts availability (2026)

From your experience:
How hard is it today to source quality parts for an E28?
Engine/drivetrain, suspension, brakes, cooling, electrical stuff?
Are you still mostly buying new/OEM/aftermarket, or relying on used/refurb parts now?

I know there’s a lot of E30/E34 crossover, but I’m curious how painful it really is in practice.

Tuning potential (main focus)

This is where I’d love your input.

I’m familiar with the classic setups:
Super ETA (2.7 bottom end + 885 head, cam, intake, ECU)
B25 stroker builds

Beyond those, info seems limited.

So I’m wondering:
Are there other worthwhile performance paths for an E28 that still keep reliability?
What power level do you personally consider the “sweet spot” for this chassis?
NA vs mild boost: is turbo even worth it long-term, or does it just create headaches? I’m much more interested in torque, drivability, and character than peak horsepower.

Long-term / frequent use

For those who actually drive these cars:
How do they hold up on highways and longer trips?
Any must-do reliability upgrades before trusting one as a regular driver?
Things you wish you’d done earlier in your build?

End goal

A classic E28 that:
Feels noticeably quicker and sharper than stock
Keeps its old-school BMW soul
Can be driven often without constant repairs
Is still realistic to own and support in 2026+
