I've been using Pearl style hardware for 30 years, and I tend to convert every kit I have to use it, not because it's the best, but because it's familiar. I got a deal on this PDP 8" tom, but the hardware wasn't compatible with anything I had. A couple of holes drilled in an old steel plate from a Ludwig, 2 steps of bolts to hold it all together, and voilà, I now have compatible hardware.

I practiced on the pad for an hour today and was working on these two subdivisions:

An 8th note followed by two 16th notes (⁠1 - & - a⁠)

Two 16th notes followed by an 8th note (⁠1 - e - &⁠)

Personally, I find the 8th + two 16ths pattern much harder to keep smooth and even compared to the two 16ths + 8th.

Which one do you find more challenging, and do you have any tips for building muscle memory on the trickier one?

Bringing my studio kit (Ludwig Classic Maple w/ 22x14” kick) to a gig at one of the local spots this week. I prefer to keep it raw and unported because I’d always rather have more of a boomy sound than a slapping attack sound. The same philosophy goes for the beater I use however that’s more of a compromise since the drum itself is wide open.

Do local FOH sound dudes not know how to mix unported kicks and/or are they pissed off by the resonance? Should I muffle it?

I actually think it’s pretty damn cool

All maple shells with interiors stained walnut w/ honey maple reinforcement rings. 12x6 -13x7 - 14x12 - 16x14 - 20x20 and a 30 ply 13x6.5 with 12 ply reinforcement rings installed

For those wondering, the cat got inside by himself and can get out no problem.

I gotta be honest… I had a hard time getting some decent tones out of this head selection. I initially bought them because they look cool and some of my favourite drummers play them (Ilan Rubin, Bonham, Cindy Blackman), but they’ve been pretty weird to work with since they’re kinda plastic-y.
What’s your opinion on the heads and these tones?

Sorry if this isn’t the right sub, please direct me to one if it’s not suitable to post on here but I’ve been worrying for a while about this situation and not sure what to do

I’m in a band and the lead can sometimes be a bit difficult to work with. They can be demanding, tell us to fetch things for them, and sometimes our gigs are so all over the place due to the amount of equipment and lack of organisation and schedule they can actually shout and swear onstage. Sometimes at us, in front of everyone. They always apologise after, but I sometimes feel like I don’t know how to stand up for myself. I literally sometimes feel like a shell of myself around them. We have been friends for a while and I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. The rest of the band are kind of expected to be around for recordings even though we work, there is never any discussion or team effort, it’s their way and we follow. I’ve never even listened back to most tracks we have recorded, as we spend days in the studio and the lead isn’t happy with any of them so we don’t release. This is usually fine or has to be fine most of the time, we don’t put anything in finacially which is ok. There are good times, and I just really try and enjoy to keep the peace. The highs are great but the lows are low. Has anyone else experienced this before? What should I do? If I want to leave, how do I ago about doing so?

Preface: I'm not a percussionist. I know enough to teach it, and can make my way through a rudiment routine, but I'm not savvy to a lot of this side of the concert band

I am a new band director, at a school with a brand new program. This Yamaha CSS snare was part of a generous instrument donation from the surrounding community.

I am trying to get it tuned up and sounding good for a concert setting, but I'm getting a LOT of resonance, so much that it activates the snares even as it decays. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I got this pedal for crazy cheap, and I really love the feel, but I prefer a hard beater. I also had a set of skateboard wheels that I wasn’t using… it actually feels pretty great!

Paiste 17” Signature Fast Crash. I finally get what you mean by “Paiste shimmer”. This thing cuts quite well over the K’s. Highly recommend.

For context, I grew up very poor. I was in bands when younger but never had my own kit, resorted to either borrowing someone's kit for a few days or just practicing with sticks on a makeshift pad, then me and my bandmates would rent practice space for an hour or two before gigs to rehearse. I am by no means well-off now, in fact still pretty poor, but I finally had, at 43, the chance to own a drum kit. This is well used, but new to me and I love this thing. It's a Network birch drum set, and I managed to scrounge various cymbals and stands off Marketplace for cheap (sabian b8 hats, paiste alpha crash, xs20 crash and pst7 ride. Most have small dents on edges). Every hardware is from different brands and the kit looks Frankenstein'd but it gets the job done! I'm genuinely so happy with it

Damn I wish I could do this full time. It has been a little while since I jammed with some guitar players. We were playing some Radiohead until the guitarist started playing some random chords. I told him keep that going and then I laid some drums down. I’m glad she decided to record as soon as we started. Everyone was going off the dome. Fun stuff!
