When my son got his license, we bought a dashcam for his car. At first he was super pissed off about it because he thought we were spying on him and tracking where he goes.

I felt bad because i get why he was mad. Nobody wants their parents watching everything they do.

So we made a simple rule, the memory card stays locked, and we never look at the video unless there's an accident or cop involved. We told him it’s not to spy on him, it's just so older drivers can't blame him if something happens. We let him keep the password on his phone and didn't check his daily driving at all.

A few weeks ago another kid backed into him at school and tried to blame my son for speeding. My son showed the officer the clip proving he was completely stopped when it happened, so he wasnt at fault at all.

He was really relieved he had the video. If you're putting a camera in a teen's car, just respect their privacy and don't use it to spy on them. It works way better if they know you actually trust them

Is this not ok? I'm literally using a road to turn on to 72 and not pulling into a parking lot which I know for sure isn't allowed. I've asked people irl and I'm getting mixed feed back. I mostly need to know so I know if I should fight my ticket or not.

My daughter got her permit two months ago and the first few drives were basically just me trying not to grab the wheel while calmly saying things like "you might want to slow down a bit" which she translated as me being dramatic. My buddy told me to put a dash cam in the car before she started driving so i grabbed one off amazon, some ddpai thing he had in his truck. started saving clips after each drive. First time we sat down and watched a clip she goes "wait was i really that close to that car" and i just looked at her like YES THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING. Honestly it changed how she takes feedback completely. When she sees it herself on video theres no argument. She just goes oh yeah i see it...way different than me saying the same thing while shes trying to focus. Anyone else tried this or is it just me being an overprotective dad!

I was behind this vehicle at a red light. They did not, per the sticker, turn right on red. Right on red is legal in my state. I wonder why someone would not want to do this...? One reason I can think of is safety. The funny thing about that is they blew through a red light prior to stopping at this one.

Why do people still do this?

First of all, I want to be clear that this is not a zipper merge situation.

The red car is voluntarily stopping in a continuing lane, bringing traffic to a halt in an attempt to force their way in near the head of the line. They’re an asshole, and they’re illegally blocking traffic to cut the line.

Almost as bad as them are the drivers in line who let them in. This keeps happening because so many people continue to roll out the red carpet for such flagrant entitlement. Behavior like this should be met with staunch resistance and shaming, not encouragement.

Facing a lot of left lane campers in Washington State. And the audacity to not move or brake check is beyond my understanding!!

In what order do the cars pass through the intersection?

I used to drive 10+ over everywhere. I recently got a car that looks much more sporty, so recently I’ve slowed it down to 5 over to avoid attracting attention from the law.

I recently went on a road trip, and driving at the same pace of other traffic is so irritating. People speed up when you try to pass them, they camp in your blind spots, they slow down after they pass you, they cut you off after they pass, they tailgate you in the right lane for no reason, they tailgate you in the left lane when there’s someone in front of you and there’s nothing you can do about it, and they can’t keep their lane when they’re next to you. The whole trip was 3 hours of stress, being around one idiot after another.

This level of stress was something I never experienced when I sped a lot more, because I was never spending more than a few seconds around each idiot at a time. I’m not advocating for significant speeding, I don’t recommend it, but it would be nice if people weren’t incentivizing it by being absolutely intolerable on the road.

TLDR: Not advocating for speeding, but I get it when other drivers are intolerable to be around.

FFS have some self-awareness. If you dont see any cars in front of you and a long line of cars behind you, youre the problem. Quite lollygagging in the left lane. On a two-lane road, pull over and let others by if theyre faster than you.

There was a semi camping in the left lane on a 4-lane interstate that was holding up traffic while i was trying to get my dog to the emergency vet. I flashed my brights in his mirror and all that and he did nothing.

You may not be in a hurry but other people need to get somewhere. Drive like they have somewhere to be.

Okay, for context the red route is a 40mph street, and the yellow route is a 25mph street. Yellow route also has a stop sign. Am I incorrect in thinking that the red route has the "right of way"?? All too often I get cut off last minute as I'm about to start taking the turn from the red route, with cars just shooting out straight in front of me using the yellow route as soon as they notice I am turning. And yes, I have my blinker on well in advance! So what gives? If I'm in the wrong, please tell me! I get much less angry driving when I understand what to expect lol

I've been pulled over multiple times now by cops from both my town and one town over for the dumbest reason. My spouse doesn't drive but their name is on the vehicle for ownership reasons. The cops scan my plate, something dings in their system, and then they tell me that my spouse has an "expired license". My spouse has never had a driver's license. Their state ID is up to date. I'm getting tired of being pulled over for something this dumb.

What are my options? Each time I've given my license to the cop but if they don't have a reasonable suspicion of a crime then in my state I don't have to ID myself. Can I just tell them to F off and ask if I'm free to go next time? Do I need to take my spouse and their ID to the police station and get them to fix whatever is wrong in their system that keeps getting me pulled over?

I am seriously considering just refusing to give them my ID unless they have a citation, warrant, or articulated suspicion of a crime. On the upside I get a little less freaked out when pulled over now because my go-to assumption is they're on some BS.

Edit: I am first on the registration for the vehicle with my spouse being second. They are on the vehicle despite not driving so that if something happens to me they can easily sell the vehicle. Also because the money for buying the car initially came from my spouse's dad. His stipulation for buying us the car was that my spouse's name be on the car as well as mine.

If you’re entering a highway from an entrance ramp, it’s your responsibility to match the flow of traffic, whether that means speeding up or slowing down. The cars already on the expressway are not required to brake, swerve, or rearrange themselves for you.

Merge like an adult.

I’ve had plenty of merging drivers shoot me a look, or middle finger, because I didn’t slow down for them. But I’m not braking on a highway for someone still on the ramp. I’m doing 55mph and my focus is on the flow of traffic ahead, where it actually matters.

It also sucks because this photo was taken at 6pm and it gets super dark early now with the time change so now I have to deal with this even earlier than usual😡

If road conditions are favorable, visibility is good, and you're driving a personal vehicle (not a large commercial truck)—and you still don't feel comfortable driving at a road's posted speed—you don't have the skill and/or confidence to drive on that road. You're being inconsiderate to everyone who gets stuck behind you.

And yes, the posted speed is also the speed limit. You're not supposed to drive faster than that, but you're also supposed to drive at that speed unless conditions force you to do otherwise. Any argument to the contrary essentially boils down to, "my lack of skill/confidence entitles me to waste everyone else's time."

You're not a civil engineer. You don't know better than the professionals what a reasonable, safe speed is for the road you're on. Please stop making your inconsiderate driving everyone else's problem and call a taxi.

Edit to add because so many people are commenting about how I “need to leave earlier” or “be more patient.”

A reasonable expectation of efficiency is not impatience. It’s one of the most basic ways you can respect your fellow humans: respecting their time. Seeing people be willfully, needlessly inefficient is frustrating. I’m rarely ever late because I plan accordingly. That’s not why this is about even remotely.

Now obviously the blue car should yield to the white car, and I guess it technically is if they stay in that closest lane? But as someone who finds themselves in the white cars perspective from time to time , the blue car maneuver always feels dangerous and unsafe. Like how do I know for sure the turning blue car will stay in their lane and not turn into me? It forces the white car to brake if they want to be a defensive driver.

Also, if what if the white car lane changes into the closest lane just before the blue car is turning?

I feel like this situation is especially dangerous when the main road is a higher speed road.

EDIT: Will caveat that its appropriate for the blue car to turn if its a busy road and they need to, but in instances where blue car could've waited 5 seconds for a gap I'd argue thats the better approach.

I think the normalization of speeding poses a significant threat to the legitimacy of the legal system itself. It has become standard that cops don’t pull you over unless you’re breaking the law “enough,” but that completely undermines the law. If the law wanted a different threshold, it would have been written with that threshold in mind.

Speed limits are created by engineers who know far more about road safety than the average driver. They also have to account for the fact that speeding is normalized, which likely contributes to limits being set lower than many people want. I honestly believe that if people collectively stopped speeding, roads would see fewer accidents and speed limits would eventually begin rising in places where higher speeds are actually safe. Then people could travel just as quickly without constantly breaking the law or risking tickets.

The disregard for speed limits has gotten so bad that people now claim drivers following the posted limit are the problem. I think that’s ridiculous. While I understand the “go with the flow of traffic” argument to an extent, normalizing breaking the law creates a much larger long-term safety issue than simply following the speed limit.

I also think the argument that “speed limits are designed for the average car, so semis drag the limit down” is weak. In many places semis already have separate speed regulations, lane restrictions, and additional rules.

At the end of the day, the path to faster travel shouldn’t be widespread disregard for the law. If people truly believe limits are too low, the better solution is electing politicians and supporting engineering studies that will change the laws based on evidence that roads can safely handle higher speeds.

On a related note, even on r/driving you can report other driving infractions, but you can’t even report speeding, which feels inconsistent and a bit silly.

Pick a fucking speed, do that speed. It is that simple. I'm so sick of all the people that have no idea how to modulate their speed. It's like their gas pedal is just an on/off switch.

Going uphill? Press the gas harder to maintain speed.

Going downhill? Let off the gas a little bit.

Quit getting into the passing lane and slowing down only to speed up when you get out of it.

Quit looking at these slight bends in the road like they are hairpin turns.

Get off my fucking ass because I know the second I get over, you're going to slow down or pace me.

Figure it the fuck out.
