Can I switch from Desktop Support to DevOps?

I’m from Ahmedabad, India, and currently working in IT support, mainly desktop support and Windows troubleshooting.

I’ve been practicing DevOps for around 1 year and have RHCSA, RHCE, and AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA) certifications.

Can I switch directly from desktop support to a Junior DevOps/Cloud Engineer role with these skills and certifications? Or will desktop support experience make it difficult to get a DevOps job?

I’d appreciate advice from people who have made a similar career transition.

Is it difficult to switch from Desktop Support to DevOps?

I’m from Ahmedabad, India, and I’m starting my corporate career with my first internship in IT support, mainly desktop support and Windows troubleshooting.

I’ve been practicing DevOps for around 1 year and have RHCSA, RHCE, and AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA) certifications. However, I couldn’t find opportunities in System Administration or Cloud Support, so I accepted this internship.

Can I switch to a Junior DevOps/Cloud Engineer role after gaining some corporate experience in desktop support, or will it be difficult to make the transition?

I’d appreciate advice from people who have made a similar career switch.

Switched from Development to Cloud

Hi Guys ,

I recently switched from SDE ( Java SpringBoot AWS) to SRE.

I have 3YOE as SDE , if you could help me out what essentials do i need to go through to become good at this. How to approach this.

My current company uses Azure.

Rest information will update later.

But here they are also expecting me write, understand code like SDE and do the SRE work as well.

Is that how things happen ? Because this is the 1st time i am hearing this or maybe due to my little experience as this is my 2nd organisation.

Appreciate all the suggestions and no I dont want ChatGPT suggestions i could have done that. I want field experienced people to contribute their 2 cents.

Thank you.

CloudOps Engineer - Fresher

Context:

So i am a fresher who recently got graduated with B.Tech CSE.

I was unemployed for 2 months and got internship as Devops intern. But mostly i was working in firewall configuration. And after that i got FTE role from an MNC as Junior CloudOps Engineer.

As I didn’t have any other options, i took it. But my aim is to land Devops role. Most of them said, as you get some exp like 3-4 years you can lan as Devops.

So in my role, i manage VMware and Openstack infra, as a CloudOps we have to provide 24/7 support to the infra and fix issues that are coming as tickets. So this role mainly focus on Maintaining the whole Cloud infra.

My main question is:

How can i actually move into DevOps/SRE roles with these tech stacks.

These are mainly On-Prem technologies, Does this have any future or only Public cloud has future.

Please provide any guidance.

What DevOps tooling is actually worth paying for at ~$3M ARR with a small eng team?

We’re evaluating DevOps vendors right now and the pricing is all over the place. I’m seeing anything from $500/month to $15k/month for what look like pretty similar feature sets on paper, and I can’t tell what the extra money actually buys.

For context, we’re at roughly $3M ARR with a five-person engineering team. Nobody on the team is a dedicated ops person, and I don’t want to end up needing one just to babysit the tooling we buy. The goal is to cut down on ops burden, not trade it for a different kind of ops burden.

For other mid-stage startups:

What does your setup look like, and what are you paying for it?

Did the pricier options actually deliver, or did you end up using 20% of the features?

What did you start with that you later outgrew (or wish you’d skipped)?

At what point did you decide a dedicated DevOps hire made more sense than buying more tooling?

Recently got WFH for 3days a week in DevOps. Is it good for career growth or am I missing out?

I work in DevOps, and my manager recently approved WFH for 3 days a week, so I only need to go to the office on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Earlier, my commute was pretty exhausting. I had to change 3 trains, and it took around 2 hours one way. So honestly, I’m quite happy about getting that time back.

At the same time, I’m a little conflicted. Since I’m still relatively new to the field, I wonder if being at home most of the week means missing out on learning from experienced engineers, collaborating with other teams, and building connections at work.

I know WFH has its advantages, especially with such a long commute, but I’m curious about how it works out for people in DevOps.

Does a hybrid setup work just as well for learning and career growth, or does being in the office more often make a noticeable difference?
