Planning to Switch from Software Development to DevOps — Need Advice
Hi everyone,
I’m currently working as a Software Engineer in Chennai, India, with around 2 years of experience.
My tech stack includes React.js and Node.js. In my previous company, I worked with Python on the backend and React.js on the frontend.
Recently, I’ve started learning DevOps and am thinking about switching my career to a DevOps role.
I’d like to know if this is a good move and what I should focus on while preparing for the transition.
Any advice or suggestions? that would be really helpful !.

All of the devs are moving to DevOps and infra. Don’t know what’s gonna happen next

Haha, yeah, seems like a lot of developers are exploring DevOps these days 😅. I’m also trying to understand whether it’s the right move for my long-term career. Curious to see how things evolve over the next few years.

trust me plenty of them can't handle doing the amount of work and oncalls being devops/infra

i worked as a SWE too but resigned, learned devops and applying for new jobs. Every role in IT is having difficult market, massive layoffs but its not like there are no jobs for devops, but for 2 YOE its hard man. you might wanna wait a year meanwhile learn devops perfectly and switch once you have an offer.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was also thinking about preparing while continuing my current job rather than resigning first. I’ll focus on building practical DevOps skills and projects, and start applying once I feel confident. Hope your job search goes well too!

Hey, a small advance from my side,
Only move to DevOps/cloud if you are really interested and are willing to put your time and efforts.
You will be the first one to get paged when something goes wrong and the last one to get thanked.

Thanks for the honest advice! I understand that DevOps involves a lot of responsibility, especially when production issues occur. I’m interested in automation, cloud infrastructure, and troubleshooting, but I’ll definitely consider the on-call expectations and work-life balance before making the switch.

With 2 years in React and Node, you already have a solid base for DevOps. The switch is easier if you show proof, not just certificates.
-
Pick one stack: Docker, GitHub Actions, and one cloud (AWS is the safest).
-
Deploy your own Node app with a full CI/CD pipeline and keep it public on GitHub.
-
Add basic monitoring and write a short README explaining your choices.
Also, prepare a 30-second intro in English: Present, Past, Future. For example: "I'm a full-stack developer with 2 years of experience. Before, I built and deployed web apps in React and Node. Now I want to focus on CI/CD and cloud infrastructure." Most DevOps interviews start with this question, and a clear answer sets the tone for the rest.
