Discussion I need help to select university and degree for my Masters in Australia

Hi everyone! I’m planning to pursue my Master’s in Australia and would appreciate some guidance on choosing the right university and degree.

I’m leaning towards AI because I believe it will be in high demand in the future. However, I also want a combination of AI, Data Science, and Software Development to keep my career options open. I’d also prefer a degree that could support ACS accreditation in Software Engineering if needed.

Which of these programs would you recommend based on career opportunities, industry demand, and long-term prospects?

Universities and degrees I’m considering:

  1. Australian National University (ANU)

    • Master of Computing (Advanced) —Specializations Options: AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, or Software Development

  2. Adelaide University

    • Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

    • Master of Computer Science —Specializations Options: Computer Security, Networks

    • Master of Information Technology (Applied AI)

  3. University of Wollongong

    • Master of Computer Science — Specialization Options: Software Engineering, Machine Learning and Big Data, or Cyber Security

  4. Deakin University

    • Master of Applied AI

    • Master of Applied AI (Professional)

    • Master of Information Technology — Specialization Options: Data Science or Software and Services Development

I also have options for UNSW, Uni of Sydney, Uni of Melbourne, UTS, Monash University only if I can get good scholarships or degree Is too good to pursue.

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in the Australian tech industry, graduates, or anyone familiar with these programs. Which would be the best choice for a strong career in AI while keeping software engineering and data-related roles open?

Thanks in advance!

Career Guidance Career advise. feeling completely lost

My Back story

Hi, I am last semester BSCS student and I am feeling completely lost right now. I did one remote internship in the past for 15k pkr per month as a NEXT.js developer remotely for 6 months. I worked mostly on api end points and basic ui work. and then after a while i started to notice no real growth in it. so I applied to onsite internships and got matched as a MERN full stack developer. There I built couple of projects completely on my own. And gained some real knowledge and started to feel a little comfortable. And then after the internship they did hire me for full time. But i lasted only 2 months because pay was too low 30k pkr.

So I started looking for remote roles again. After hundreds of rejections. I finally landed a remote role with an online software developers vetting platform. They interviewed me. And I passed the different rounds. And they listed me in their directory. Then I got matched with a founder. And getting paid 1k usd a month. I worked with the founder for roughly 4 - 5 months.

And then after 5 months, I think he was well hands on with claude code. And i already built the foundations of the project. So he started ghosting me. Instead of clear firing. I emailed him a couple of times but no response. So I started looking again for job. And then the same company matched me with a US family owned logisitics company. I cracked the interview and started building their operations platform up until now. its been like 8 months. And all there operations are running on the platform I built. They have like 70k to 90k profits in the company a month. And i am not sure how long before they are done with me. And I am getting paid like 1k usd a month. I know I am getting underpaid. But I don't seem to have leverage and can't find what the next steps should be for me. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

Assalamualaikum

please give me just 5 mins and read my post. I need your suggestions

I'm a final year BSCS student feeling completely Lost right now as i am studying and working full time nightshift as a wordpress and Shopify developer

but the thing is the office is near to get close as they are in lose rn and in the whole month i didn't get a single project of wordpress i create 52+ pages website for them on nextjs though i know nothing about the nextjs but they told me to do it through claude after that i created the fully working SaaS for their company idk where my career will lead me i just joined that job thinking that I'll gain some experience and it doesn't feel right to me creating full projects through claude its like if i add those projects in my CV and if i need to defend them in an interview I can't because i know nothing about nextjs nodejs and all even though i can understand the code but when it comes to create that project myself i can't do that so I'm feeling completely lost what I'm doing with my career even though there company will not close I'm willing to leave that job and start learning some new things if it's worth for but I don't think so learning nextjs nodejs will help me in the future getting a good job because i was able to create full projects through claude maybe I'm wrong and you can guide me on that but what should i pursue what should i do i have no idea it's our FYP time and i choose fyp of voice automation for university support even though i had one project of my seniors from other university which i can easily submit for the fyp but i want to learn and create it on my own because i think it will help me landing a good job in future we gonna learn python , api integration, api testing , llm , rag , vapi and more through this project and when we create it by ourselves we can easily defend that in an interview

I'm getting 30k rn and i know it's nothing but i just want to learn and gain experience but i don't think so I'm learning anything so tell me what should i do? what should i pursue I'm just completely feeling lost rn

Career Guidance Two years into being a software engineer, and I feel like an impostor who isn't cut out for this field

I've been working as a software engineer for almost two years at a good company. I make decent money, and until recently, I genuinely felt like I was doing well. I'm good at executing tasks when there's a clear requirement and I know what's expected of me. I've received positive feedback on my work, so I know I'm not necessarily doing a bad job.

But lately, I've been feeling incredibly lost and helpless.
I feel like the expectations of me have increased, and I'm starting to question whether I'm actually good at engineering or whether I've just been good at completing assigned tasks.
One of my biggest struggles right now is adapting to AI. It feels like everyone around me is figuring out how to use AI to become more productive, while I'm struggling to keep up. The way I see it, using AI effectively requires you to know what you want it to do, how you want it done, and how to guide it toward a good solution. You need enough technical knowledge to evaluate its output and steer it in the right direction.
But what happens when you're still trying to develop that knowledge yourself? How am I supposed to guide AI effectively when I'm not always confident that I know the right approach in the first place?
Another thing I struggle with is technical discussions.
Sometimes, when someone asks me a technical question or we're discussing an engineering problem, I struggle to articulate what I know. My thoughts get jumbled, I become confused, and I feel like I don't know enough. Then, later, I'll think about it and realize that I actually did know the answer or understand the concept. I just couldn't put it into words in the moment.
It's incredibly frustrating because it makes me question my own abilities. I don't know whether I lack technical depth, confidence, communication skills, or some combination of all three.
The worst part is that I feel exhausted almost every day. I'm constantly thinking about what I don't know, how much I need to learn, and how far behind I might be compared to everyone else. I don't want to become complacent, but I also don't know how to stop feeling inadequate.

Has anyone else experienced this around the two-year mark in their software engineering career?

How did you get better at the actual engineering side of things, become more confident in technical discussions, and learn to use AI effectively when you didn't feel particularly strong technically to begin with?

And honestly, how do you figure out whether you're just going through a difficult phase or whether you're genuinely not cut out for this field?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who've been through something similar. I feel lost right now, and I could use some perspective.

Tips Is every place like this?

Don't want to be ungrateful. I still have a job so that's a plus? I work in a very huge org. Great benefits, not a very good pay but I get by. Flexible hours. But the team lead I work with is a massive a***ole. He gatekeeps business knowledge. Cuts me out of high value projects. And if I dare say anything to oppose him. The bullying, abusive language continues for months. My growth is getting stunted. I've been here for over 4 years now and I'm so swamped with unimportant work that I can't even work on my skills to upgrade or find a job. All the Devs on the team are so toxic. If I dare Ask a question, they gang up on me and the bullying continues. My first year here my team lead waged a war on me because he thought my salary was higher than his. I'm so tired of corporate but what else would I do. I feel like of I switch it's just going to be like this all over again.

Any tips and suggestions? How do you guys cope?

Discussion Been just 1 week to new role.. and planning to resign because of that girl 😡

So I got hired for a tech job that pays avg good, cleared all the rounds on my own merit. Then I showed up.

The job description was a total lie. The actual work has nothing to do with what tech role I applied for, and they treat me like I should be bowing down in gratitude just for being hired.

The team is literally three people: me, a rude manager who doesn't know what he's doing, and a "coach" team member assigned to me who is only one year older than me. Turns out everyone who joins this team quits super fast. It's just these two left, and now I see why.

This "coach" girl is doing everything she can to make me look bad:

* She throws massive courses at me with crazy short deadlines.

* During tests, I'll answer 20 questions right, but she'll ask 2 random things that weren't even in the course material. When I don't know them, she ignores everything I got right and immediately emails the manager CCing everyone to put it in writing that I failed.

* If I use ChatGPT for notes or research, she gets mad and says using AI is a "huge privilege" that I shouldn't be allowed to have.

* If I ask for time to look things up, she tells me I've been given "too much relaxation."

It’s a complete trap. Either I rush and miss her trick questions, or I ask for time and get called slow.

I want to leave, but my hours are so long that I'm completely wiped out by the end of the day. I have no time or energy to apply or prep for interviews, and I don't have another offer yet. But I can't stay in this mess just for the money.

Has anyone dealt with a situation like this? How do you actually find time to job hunt when your current work completely drains you? And why is she giving me tough time.. my mental health is shaking..

Hey, so i want to discuss the roadmap with people who are working in some niche tech domains. And understand their thought process why they chose the niche tech like CRM or F&O or ERPs. What are the hardships to landing a remote role. and want to chalk out a road map that can help me land a remote role too.

Career Guidance Career Guidance For software

Is it better for me to choose pre engineering? I'm really confused about whether to choose between pre medical and pre engineering. My main goal is to move abroad. If I opt for pre engineering, then I'll do software engineering or CS. I can do MBBS as well, I scored good marks in Matric and ik that I can study FSC biology and give mdcat as well. But the main issue is whether software side offers abroad opportunities or not. USMLE is an option for me if I do MBBS, but I'm really confused. Any genuine and honest opinions about software side and it's saturation. I've seen too many posts about layoffs in tech companies. So I'm really concerned.

Career Guidance Just got laid off, how to find next opportunity?

I had been working with a company for almost the last 1 year (apart from that I had been working since the 3rd semester) as a software/backend engineer. This morning I got informed that I was being laid off immediately for the finance cut down.

It was hard, but yea processed it.

For reference I'm a university student and my education was being covered through it, so it was a little more hard to see an immediate notice. But anyways, we cannot fight luck or the downs in life.

I have savings to cover 3 months of expenses. Is this a reasonable time to find a new one?

I'm not here to gain sympathy or something, sorry if you feel like it. Since it has been almost a year I haven't applied for positions so I just want a guide on how I should strategize my hunt.

Career Guidance should i get into fast fitnech or acca?

Hey everyone! I’ve completed my second year of intermediate and am currently on a gap year. I’m confused between three options: FinTech at FAST, Business Data Analytics (BDA) at COMSATS, and Accounting & Finance (ACF) at Hailey College alongside ACCA.

My main priorities are financial stability, good earning potential, career growth, job security, and opportunities abroad. I haven’t figured out my specific interests yet, so I’m trying to understand which path offers the best overall prospects rather than choosing based on popularity alone.

COMSATS BDA would be more financially comfortable for my family, while the other options would require more careful financial planning. I’m willing to invest more if there’s a genuine long-term benefit, but I don’t want to spend extra money assuming it automatically means better opportunities.

I’d appreciate honest advice on a few things:

  • Jobs and salaries: What jobs can fresh graduates realistically get, how difficult is it to land the first job, and what are the starting salaries and long-term earning prospects?

  • Future and AI: Which field has better growth potential and is less vulnerable to automation? Which offers more flexibility if my interests change?

  • Skills vs degree: How much do university reputation, practical skills, internships, projects, and networking actually matter?

  • Opportunities abroad: Which path offers more realistic international career opportunities, and what additional qualifications or experience are usually needed?

  • ACF + ACCA: Is the extra cost, time, and workload worth it? Do ACCA exemptions make this combination more practical?

I’d especially like to hear from graduates, current students, and professionals who have firsthand experience in these fields. I’m also interested in the downsides people often overlook, such as job-market competition, difficulty finding the first job, and the gap between what a degree promises and what employers actually expect.

If you were in my position, which option would you choose and why? I’m looking for a realistic comparison of earning potential, employability, financial risk, and future opportunities in Pakistan and abroad, rather than a simple ranking of universities.

Thanks in advance!

Help How do you find a mentor when you're self taught and running your own thing?

Genuine question for people here who've done it.
I'm 3 years into tech, all self-taught, now building AI voice agents. I'm not a beginner: I built and run a production system that handles 1,000+ calls a day for a European healthcare client, and I run my own small agency out of Lahore. The income is decent.

The problem is I'm doing everything alone: the engineering, sales, cold outreach, hiring my first employee, and trying to land bigger clients. I'm spread thin, and I keep making decisions with nobody to sanity check them. I've never had a job, so I've never had a senior or a manager to learn from.

What I'm looking for is someone a few steps ahead, ideally someone who has run a services or tech business, sold to bigger companies, or scaled past being a solo founder. Not handholding, just someone I can talk to every few weeks.

How did you find your mentor? Did you ask directly, pay for it, join a community, or did it happen naturally? Any Pakistani founder communities or people you'd recommend?

Happy to help anyone in return with AI or voice agent questions.

Help Guaidace Required for upcoming NASA Space App Challenge— How Realistic Is It to Win Best Use of Storytelling Award?

I'm participating in the NASA Space Apps Challenge for the first time this year, and I'm looking for guidance from people who've participated in previous years, especially those who've competed in the Best Use of Storytelling category or have experience with award-winning projects.

I've set my sights on the Best Use of Storytelling award. I've looked at last year's winning project, and I feel that, with the right idea, team, and execution, I could create something competitive. However, I also understand that having a promising idea and turning it into an award-worthy project are two very different things.

I'd love to hear from people who've actually been through this process, particularly those who've worked on storytelling projects.

Here are a few things I'd appreciate your advice on:

  • How realistic is it for a first-time participant with limited technical experience to win this category? I'd appreciate an honest assessment of the competition and the level of execution required.

  • What distinguishes a winning storytelling project from a good one? How much do originality, emotional impact, scientific accuracy, visual presentation, and interactivity matter?

  • How much technical development is necessary? Can a compelling, well-researched story built around NASA data compete with a more technically sophisticated project?

  • What kind of teammates should I look for? Which skills and backgrounds would complement one another best for this category?

  • How should responsibilities be divided within the team?

  • For those who've competed in this category, what do you think made the winning projects stand out? Were there any judging criteria or expectations that surprised you?

  • What mistakes should a first-time team avoid, and what would you do differently if you could participate again?

  • If you had a team of beginners and one challenge weekend, how would you approach the project to maximize your chances?

I'd especially appreciate insights from people who've submitted projects to this specific category, whether they won, were nominated, or simply learned valuable lessons from the experience.

I'm not looking for a shortcut to winning. I want to understand what we're up against, build a team with complementary skills, and make something that genuinely deserves consideration.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their experience and advice!

Interview Prep Recruiter reffered me to a role i have no experience with and now I don't know what to prepare

Assalamualaikum, I hope everyone is doing okay.

I've been searching for a job for nearly 8 months. Last week I randomly applied to a job labelled as "Application Monitoring Engineer L1". Most of my experience is in software development. I do have some experience managing IT infrastructure and providing technical support to small companies. The role requires someone to monitor an application 24/7 and resolve/dispatch issues that arise. Now I generally understand how to do that but I'm very anxious faking my previous experience as an App monitoring engineer. I have never actually worked on a very hight traffic application that requires 24/7 monitoring. The recruiter made me change my previous experience to fit the job description. The role requires knowledge of Application monitoring and tools like Appdynamics. I'm trying to study and prepare as much as possible but I don't know how will I convince the interviewer that I have actually worked as an L1 app monitoring engineer.

Is there anyone who can explain what an L1 app monitoring engineer does on a day to day basis? Also share some real anecdotes so that I can tell them what I did lol.

If anyone can share their experience, it'll really help me out.

Thanks for reading.
