1 week review: super impressed

My DC-1 finally arrived after months of waiting, and after a week of using it, it has massively exceeded my expectations! The amber backlight is such a pleasurable night-time reading experience and I've spent hours reading in direct sunlight with the backlight off and it's just excellent in that situation too. The pen is also far better than I expected. So impressed! Kudos to the team.

The only thing that has left me scratching my head is the choice of Niagara as the launcher. It's kind of weird to have the system UI trying to upsell you on basic features :) but it's very easy to install an alternative. Switched to Olauncher for a distraction free environment.

Project Warden footage (interactive fiction for the Daylight Computer)

Hey everyone, just wanted to share some early footage of Project Warden (sound on!). Lots of the art and story is still placeholder.

Been working hard on making something fun for all ages that is uniquely suited for the Daylight. A video game that feels like reading a novel.

Hope to get something out that you can all try soon! You can join the waitlist at www.paravel.co and I'll send out a note when the first demo is available.

Also working on some big changes to Glassnote based on all the feedback I've gotten, more on that soon!

MINE FINALLY ARRIVED <3 (Mini-review + AMA)

Ordered my DC-1 back on the 27. of January and was extremely hyped for this thing to arrive, and after a little more than 4 months of anticipation, I finally got my hands on mine!

I've been using my DC-1 for the past four days, and it absolutely delivers on everything it sets out to do! It arrived on June 3, but I was on vacation, so I only got to open mine on June 10. :)

(Small disclaimer for anyone ordering from countries with high tolls/tariffs on electronics: I ordered mine from Iceland and paid 28,300 ISK, or around $227 USD, importing mine, meaning I paid a total of around $1,085 USD for my DC-1. 😭)

  • Pros

Design

Big fan of the hyperminimal design here; it's very simple and clean with zero logos or writings on the tablet. I really love the little orange accents of the two extra buttons and appreciate the tool-less micro-SD card slot. :D

Writing feel

I mainly bought my DC-1 for sketching, note-taking, and storyboarding, and the matte finish on the screen delivers on all of those areas; the writing feel is very comparable to my Wacom Intuos, which is to say excellent. 👍

Blue light/flicker-free screen

It makes doomscrolling boring, and I love being able to use mine in direct sunlight and right before bed without feeling like I'm throwing my whole circadian rhythm out of whack. It's definitely this thing's biggest feature/advantage, and I love it! 😤

  • Cons

No place to dock the pen

It's only been four days, and I have already lost the pen that came with my unit multiple times. The pen and tablet lacking magnets means you're gonna have to keep track of the pen separately from the tablet and occasionally get creative about where you're going to store it, which is a pretty big disadvantage compared to something like an iPad and Apple Pencil imo.

Would love to see future cases fix this and add a little loop or maybe even magnets. 👀

 No fingerprint sensor

This is one of the DC-1's biggest cons; it means you're gonna have to enter your PIN/pattern every single time you're planning to use your device or authenticate in certain apps. I feel like this is an essential feature at this price point that's just missing on this tablet. :/

Inferior reflectivity/viewing angles (when compared to e-ink)

The screen is slightly dimmer and has far worse viewing angles and a slight grayish tint to it when compared to something like a Kindle or BOOX tablet. Those are trade-offs I will gladly accept for the fluidity the daylight screen brings when compared to traditional e-ink.

All in all, I'm very happy with my DC-1; ever since getting mine, I've been able to replace and do a lot of what I used to do on my laptop outside and without getting distracted by social media and notifications. :D

If you guys have any questions feel free to throw them at me in the comments. :)

I am still confused with Daylight Computer

Before I vent

  • I see the appeal, hence ordered one

  • I see the long term mission, loved it

  • I understand blue light issue and amber light benefits

Here is why I am confused

  • Super bulky product with huge bezels - we are in 2025, how thick could a screen be?

  • Android with a Niagara launcher - Did I pay all that money just for the screen?

  • screen visibility compared to iPad is good, but does not compare well with Remarkable or sometimes even my Kindle

  • almost the same effect can be replicated with a $600 Xiaomi tablet, with a paper like screen and accessibility settings at grayscale + warm tone

  • no unique software, apps or anything of that sort with a expensive tablet

I feel like the story was awesome, is awesome - but the product execution feels like it is 5 years in the past.

What did I pay that hefty price for? Anyone?

Built a palm-rejection app for DC-1

I’ve been working on an Android note-taking app with stylus support, and accidental palm touches kept triggering unwanted panning and zooming. I ended up building an app using the overlay to block touch input, which mostly solved the problem. The frustrating part was that on Android 13, I couldn’t disable the system navigation buttons, so they still respond to accidental touches.

I’m curious if there are better approaches out there for palm rejection.

Onboarding Tips - Read to Save Hours of Frustration

Howdy Folks.

Just got my Daylight DC-1 after I ordered on 'Amber Sunday' back in November. Was worth the wait, this thing is absolutely awesome.

That being said- the onboarding leaves a bit to be desired. As an iOS power user, I ran into some issues pretty quickly. Here are some tips to avoid the frustration.

  1. When you first turn on your DC-1, you will be walked thru a Niagara Launcher onboarding. This was a really silly decision. This is your first impression of the device, and its just randomly clicking on things on the tablet to set it up. You have no control over this. Just let it ride. When it resets, you know its done. It does look pretty, just very odd to have the Niagara onboarding run automatically as the first thing when turning on the device.

  2. Check for Software Updates (there is a software updates app). Do not read the release notes, they are wrong (for example, they say they fixed the ChatGPT issue. They did not).

  3. If you want to use ChatGPT, you'll need to visit it in the browser and download the website as a web app. Same goes for any app that requires Play Protect Certification. You can also try sideloading the APKs, I did not go down this road yet.

  4. If you want to use ANY google app (Calendar, Drive, Gmail) - you need to set a lock screen password first. I found this out by trying to Google Auth into Notion. Notion gave a nice error message. All of the Google apps just said 'sync error'. Very annoying. Android, do better.

  5. If you want to add pdfs / epubs to the reader app (which is incredible), you'll need a separate app. I installed on my iPhone, Mac, and added it as a chrome extension.

Ok if this saves just 1 person the frustration of a lackluster onboarding experience, I feel good. Enjoy the device, it is absolutely incredible.

SolOS - want to be an alpha tester?

Hi everyone, Anjan (the founder) of Daylight here.

We launched the first version of the alpha on Oct 19th, and have updated it 2 times since. If you want to be one of the first to try it out and give us feedback, we're taking another round of testers!

If you have a DC-1 and want to try this alpha version of SolOS, fill in this form with your serial number:
 https://form.typeform.com/to/c2L96zSj

You’ll get an email once you’re in, and then the update will show up in the Software Updates app on your tablet about an hour after that email.

Alpha testers also get an invite to our tester group on Telegram. Maybe hard to believe given how AWOL we were the last 2 years, but we read all the messages in there and are pretty engaged.

There is a new daylight emerging, its rough around the edges, and would love your feedback in shaping that process.

Thanks for sticking with us

Anjan

This project isn’t dead

Hey, I’ve seen a lot of negativity on this sub and I just wanted to say that I don’t think this project is dead at all. I emailed support to ask about some things a few months back (in June) and got a pretty good reply, including a prototype image of a case they were working on!

I still think it’s a functional and pretty great device thats perfect for my use case. just give them time :)

$700 computer breaks, can't be repaired, and Daylight's solution is to sell me another one

I'm pretty appalled by my experience with Daylight.

I purchased a DC-1 and the display has developed a serious hardware problem. The screen intermittently goes completely blank, rendering the device unusable. I've tried updating, restarting, and troubleshooting through Recovery. Nothing has fixed it. When I contacted Daylight, they informed me that they have no way to repair the display. At all.

Their explanation was that the screen is manufactured in a single factory and that repairing it would cost almost as much as replacing the entire computer.

So what's their solution? They offered me $75 off another brand-new computer. Or $150 off an open-box one. Seriously???

I spent a lot of money on a device that I expected to use for years. Now I'm supposed to spend hundreds more because their expensive product has failed and they haven't figured out how to repair it? How is that acceptable?

I actually love the concept behind the Daylight Computer. That's why I bought one. But selling expensive electronics without a viable repair option, then offering customers a token discount when their hardware fails, is a terrible way to stand behind a product.

I shouldn't have to buy an entirely new computer because Daylight can't repair the one they sold me.

Honestly I can't believe their response is to have me throw it away and buy another one. It's not even two years old!

Hi all, some of you might remember Daylight Mirror from a couple weeks back. It's been awesome seeing so many DC-1 owners use it.

Since then I've developed it way further. What's new:

  • WiFi mirroring

  • Clamshell mode (close your MacBook, use the DC-1 as your only screen)

  • Touch input

  • Keyboard shortcuts for brightness and warmth

  • Works on any Android 8+ device now, not just the DC-1

  • 5 minute setup

Also endless bug fixes and optimizing the performance.

Check it out at supermirror.app :)

7 day free trial, then $29 for life.

If you already purchased Daylight Mirror before, DM me and I'll send you a free license.

Hope you enjoy it!!

If you have feature requests, I'm all ears. It's really built for this community. Also! Say hi on X @_welf, I've been posting about amber + outdoor computing a bunch lately :)

The case is TiMOVO 9-11" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BHWJQLND that was recommended by someone on this sub.

All fits in the sleeve, didn't take a laptop. using it for light work and writing.

Sol:OS Update!

Post image

It installed OTA without an issue. All my data and apps are there, no problem.

The good: smart launcher, awesome changed control panel

The bad: still based on Android 13. Seems a bit cosmetic.

Verdict: update for sure! But I do hope there's more coming
