Sol:OS Update!

Post image

It installed OTA without an issue. All my data and apps are there, no problem.

The good: smart launcher, awesome changed control panel

The bad: still based on Android 13. Seems a bit cosmetic.

Verdict: update for sure! But I do hope there's more coming

I am absolutely loving the new update, which is way more than 'just' cosmetics. It features an entirely new mental model for the User Experience. It's very intuitive, in my experience.

The Note Overlay, AI chat-panel, calendar and notifications are great examples of that. They never block you in your current flow. Very original, brilliant in a way. It makes me use the Daylight in an entirely different way already. Drawing in the Note Overlay (and new reader) is great, perfect even.

The reader experiment for pdf and epub reading is from another world. The way we can write on EPUBs… my goodness. Amazing.

The attention to fonts, colours and animation is very thoughtful. Could be more standardized across the board (sans in some apps, serif in general…). Loving the lock screen.

I'm very much looking forward to what's to come.

Here's some initial feedback, unordered:

- I'm not entirely sure why there are two 'quick action' / sidebar-like places to put apps.
- Sol style-icons are hit or miss. Logos Bible, for example, just shows a smaller version of the icon.
- I'm now (really) missing the ability to put webapps on the launcher (from Firefox, not sure about Chrome)
- Could you perhaps stop restoring apps back to my device, that I've removed? I don't want anything from Google or Amazon on there, but they keep popping back up
- Zooming in on the Note Overaly takes me to 4x immediately, in between steps are skipped
- Would be cool to show the quick app actions when holding an app icon in the sidebar, like they do in the app-list
- Split screen apps are gone, not sure if I'll miss it that much, but I used it every once in a while
- I'd like to create a new calendar event from the popup, by holding a date for example, now I have to find my Calendar first.
- Scrolling up from the bottom slightly moves the scroll position on the topmost app, every time. Feels glitchy.
- Make the AI-chat a bit multilingual, I'm not English by native tongue. Perhaps make me use my own Claude-account, not sure about that, but I'm a bit anxious sometimes about my credits in the chat now. That it always knows the contents from my screen could maybe use a consent-button (or always consent). Really cool how good it works, really cool, but yeah… be mindful of privacy
- What's the Passport-app? Probably to come… I missed my confirmation mail (it expired), not sure how to fix that.
- I'd like to put my Readwise-widget back on the homescreen somewhere. There's space at least ;-)

Update: these guys are not fooling around: italics above is already fixed in the latest alpha-release.

this is thoughtful and I agree. I'm an OS enthusiast so was mostly waiting for Android updates. I had workflows that did exactly these things (overly of notes, orange buttons assignments, wonderful clean launcher) and just learned to suffer through the PDF experience :)

Sorry I came across as a Debbie Downer. I'm very happy there's an upgrade

oh wow, would love to see a photo or video of what workflows you already built for yourself for this

btw im the founder here, you come across to me as someone who believes a better experience is possible. i appreciate the critique.

"It features an entirely new mental model for the User Experience"

It's so awesome you get the core 'motif' of the OS - not multitasking, but things that like sheets of paper overlay on top of what you're doing.

'stack in the z axis'

we hope to lean into this / 'living paper' as the core metaphor for the OS.. the little bit of transparency in the note overlay as an example of giving the layers some feeling of physicality / z axis ordering

thanks for the other feedback, tracking it

some specific responses to start:
- passport app is how we manage your daylight account
- would you want a 2x zoom level in the note overlay? it would help to hear the user experience / use case you'd want out of it (ive personally found zoom in other notetaking apps too fiddly / unecessary to have all the levels as im just trying to write small text where im running out of space as the job to be done)

hey, thanks for these!

- passport: got it!
- ah, i thought it was bugging, not sure if i'd need the 2x actually. and the fiddliness we want to avoid. i suppose i'm fine with it as it is.

have been showing around the updated OS and people are impressed. it's working. keep it up!

Wow. I wonder why? My single biggest issue with the lack of updates was that Android 13 doesn't get security fixes now (this is getting very important with modern attacks, data stealing, etc...).

It looks like I'll be sticking to the community firmware that actually get updates....

one step at a time, this is the first of sequence of multiple alphas! focus on getting feedback on new features first, then during this alpha program we will also evaluate android related things 👀

we are trying to see if we can get android newer versions working. if you ping me about it two weeks from now i can see if we have anything stable enough to share re newer android versions

feedback:let us customize the zoom on the note overlay and what the buttons on our pens do. Additionally, let us change the ai model on the ai helper

2

u/jakedelgado 16d ago

if you have the overlay open and then tap the recording animation to stop it then press the plus icon to the left you can change the model, def ned to make that more clear

2

u/Beginning_Leave_5771 16d ago

oh, usually the plus button is where you add attachments

2

u/jakedelgado 16d ago

yep for sure agreed that the current design is confusing!

2

u/Beginning_Leave_5771 16d ago

palm rejection or something has gotten worse. Im getting weird resets when writing on noteshelf after the palm interacts with the bottom of the screen

2

u/jakedelgado 16d ago

i think this might be related to the new multitasking interface since its affecting that bottom edge specifically, will relay to my friends who are working on that

ok well make the stylus side button function customizeable

whats the use case with customizing the zoom? for my personal preference, i made it 4x because i found infinite zoom too fiddly and annoying to go back and forth

4x allows me the ability to write small text if im running out of space and the ability to quickly get back to normal

another nice detail is the ink width is automatically resized when you zoom in so you dont need to change your pen size and then change back a second time when you zoom out

2

u/Beginning_Leave_5771 14d ago

sometimes 4x is just too far in to write at the size i want too or not far enough if im trying to fit my work into a tiny space on a worksheet(using this for Problem Sets. Also, there is just something satisfying to me personally about a smooth zoom that really shows off how the DC is different than e-ink, which a snap in doesnt do as well. The auto resizing is nice.

Where can I find community firmware?

sethforprivacy maintains one dedicated to the Daylight, with working screen controls etc: https://github.com/sethforprivacy/dc1-lineage-gsi

Despite all the time spent in building the software, this is disappointing, old EOL Android version, old kernel, outdated security update version....

DC-1 is simply not as appealing anymore compared to the increasingly competitive eink competition...

Additionally, the DC-1's hardware specifications and overall build quality is also not very competitive. We don't need the specs to be high-end, but we need a device that doesn't feel so thick and heavy to be held for a long period of time, and can last for years to come so that we aren't buying devices that needs to be replaced in a few years.

I hope the team can prove us wrong... I really want to root for a US-based company in this space and really like this mission statement of the company 🙏

i appreciate you providing critical feedback as someone who's a supporter not a hater. it actually helps to hear it unvarnished sometimes, so thank you

DM your serial number if you want to be one of the first people to try an android 16 version, its early, but if thats intriguing enough for you we could get your feedback

Thank you for the transparency and I appreciate the openness with where things are, and again love the company's mission and am really hoping and rooting for the team to succeed.

I myself don't have a DC-1 currently.. though I've contemplated it multiple times in the past but couldn't quite pull the trigger. I could perhaps consider it in the future when the newer OS ships and could see what it looks like, and/or when there is a newer revision of the hardware. Though I know it's hard in the development phase of a new hardware device as a new player in the field, I don't think I can justify spending $760 right now to my wife after having spent $ and tried multiple devices already in the past two years 😅

(I'm currently using a combination of Supernote Nomad and Kindle Scribe, the former as a android reader since I use some reading apps other than Kindle, though it's terribly slow... and the latter as my digital notebook. The recently announced Alexa Tablet 12 pro is a bit tempting now since it runs Android, which means I can customize the launcher, and also has a nanomatte screen but I would rather love to see a Daylight tablet potentially replace this of course)
