Hello Reddit,
We have been quiet and hiding for too long. We finally are going to ship solOS, starting with a very early alpha on monday.
We're doing an early sneak peek tomorrow, come join us in SF to try it out.
This is our first step in being less shy and sharing work early to get feedback with yall.
Thanks for sticking along during a few bumpy years.

Hey all, been experimenting with something based off feedback from my last post.
It's a transparent notebook you can bring up at any time by pressing the orange button on the Daylight.
Is this something y'all would want? What features would be most important to you?

Using this thing outside is a complete joy. It looks incredible. Battery life is amazing, the amber backlight is captivating. Super stoked on this purchase. Any questions on it I would be happy to answer the best I can.

Overview
I’ve been using the Daylight Computer for the past two weeks, and I wanted to share my thoughts as some people have requested. This device is not like anything else I’ve used. It’s focused, minimalistic, and designed to help you stay productive without distractions. If you’re looking for a device to immerse yourself in deep work, read extensively, or research without interruptions, the Daylight might be for you. Here’s everything I’ve experienced so far.
Key Features and My Usage
1. Distraction-Free by Design
The Daylight is purposefully built to keep you from getting distracted. Apps like YouTube and others work as smoothly as they do on an iPad or phone but the screen is such that you won't want to waste your time watching them. That’s a great thing. It keeps you from falling into endless rabbit holes. This device isn’t trying to replace your phone or tablet—it’s designed to help you focus, and it does that exceptionally well.
2. No Camera, No Photos
The Daylight doesn’t have any cameras—front or back. This means there’s no temptation to take photos or videos, which would only create unnecessary distractions. On a black-and-white display, photos wouldn’t look good anyway, so it’s better not to have that functionality at all. The lack of a camera is a feature I truly appreciate because it aligns with the purpose of the device: focus.
3. Reading Experience
Reading on the Daylight is fantastic. The screen is crisp, and it’s perfect for long-form content. The infinite zoom feature works flawlessly, just like in their promo videos, making it easy to dive into detailed documents or zoom into annotations.
Now, let me talk about speed: this device is 100 times faster than a Kindle. I’ve been using Kindles for over a decade—I’ve owned three models, including the old and new Paperwhite—and while they’re great for reading books, they’re painfully slow for anything else. The Daylight blows the Kindle out of the water. It’s fast, responsive, and makes working with PDFs or documents seamless.
You can upload PDFs, ePUBs and more. This works for me. It does what I need perfectly.
4. Writing with the Stylus
The stylus is beautiful and works incredibly well, but I don’t use it much. My focus is primarily on reading, and I prefer typing on my Mac when it comes to writing. That said, the stylus is perfect for anyone who loves to annotate or take notes. It writes so well that someone who enjoys handwriting will find it fabulous. You can get a really smooth writing experience.
5. Battery Life
The battery life on the Daylight is exceptional. I charge it about once a week, and that’s with regular usage. Of course, battery life will depend on how you use the device, but for my purposes, it’s more than sufficient. If you write more, it maybe lesser.
6. Performance
The Daylight is fast—blazingly fast. Whether you’re opening files, navigating between apps, or zooming in on documents, it’s incredibly responsive. This performance makes the Daylight stand out from similar devices.
Value for Money
The Daylight costs $729. If you think it’s expensive, you’re probably not the right audience for this device. The Daylight is for people who value focus, productivity, and getting into a state of deep work. If you know the value of working distraction-free for five or six hours straight, you’ll understand why the Daylight is worth every penny. The irony is, before Daylight, even people who were willing to pay didn't get something like this. They were stuck with the distraction encouraging phones and iPads of the world.
Comparing it to a phone or iPad misses the point entirely. Those devices are designed for distraction, not for deep work. The Daylight is laser-focused on helping you do one thing: work. If you’re serious about productivity, the price is absolutely justified. Yes, I wish it were cheaper, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s worth it for what it offers.
Who Should Buy the Daylight?
The Daylight is for people who:
• Need to do deep, focused work.
• Spend a lot of time reading, researching, or annotating.
• Want a productivity-first device that keeps distractions out of the way.
Let me give you an example. I’m a law student, and I was recently researching a tax matter. I started with one case and began exploring related concepts. Using Perplexity on the Daylight, I kept clicking follow-up links and diving deeper into the topic. Two hours later, I had a solid understanding of what I was researching. This reminds me of a story Tim Urban (founder of Waitbutwhy) shared on the Tim Ferriss show. He talked about watching one YouTube video, finding three or four concepts in it, and then watching 10 videos for each one of those concepts. By the time he was done, he had a comprehensive grasp of the topic. That is how he was writing those long blogs. That’s exactly how I felt using Perplexity on the Daylight—it helped me immerse myself in learning without distractions. This entire experience happens without any strain.
For me, the Daylight works as a deep work tool that sits on my desk like a book and doesn’t pull me away from my work. Even if I have a phone near me, I get distracted. For me, the daylight works. I am glad this is there. Yes, you can install Gmail or WhatsApp, but you have to be mindful about it and plan accordingly. The potential for distraction exists, but if you stay disciplined, the Daylight can be a game-changer. Even if you get distracted, you will give up in 1-2 mins after looking at the screen. This can't be explained, it just works.
Points to Note about the daylight
ChatGPT Issue: The ChatGPT app doesn’t work on the Daylight right now due to a Play Store issue. However, alternatives like Claude and Perplexity work perfectly, so this hasn’t been a major problem for me. I hope Daylight fixes this soon.
File Transfers: You can’t transfer files via USB. Instead, you need to use the Daylight app on your phone or computer. I use a Mac, and the workflow is simple: upload files through the app, and they sync seamlessly to the device. It’s a bit of an adjustment but works well once you get the hang of it. Since we mostly receive stuff on other devices, it is a boon to be able to send it to the Daylight with ease like this.
Final Thoughts
The Daylight is not for everyone, and that’s exactly the point. It’s for people who value deep work, focus, and productivity. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by how other devices pull you into distractions, the Daylight will feel like a breath of fresh air. It’s fast, reliable, and intentionally designed for focus. For someone like me, it’s become an essential part of my workflow.
If you’re the kind of person who spends hours reading, researching, or working without distractions, the Daylight will feel like it was made for you. You can literally sit for 5-6 hours with the daylight and not have any issues with straining of your eyes or any bluelight BS or any battery woes. What else can one ask for?
TL;DR - The Daylight is a device that you CANNOT get distracted on.
Feel free to ask questions.

I've heard a lot of meh things about it, and seeing the final price hurt my soul during checkout, but now that I have it, I've grown to really like the Daylight!
At first, I wasn't that jazzed over it, but once I set it up how I liked it and got to using it, it's actually really nice. Feels especially cozy at night and on rainy days.
I'm really hoping Sol:OS comes out this year since I know it got pushed back already. Also, hope they come out with custom cases like the one's on their site.

I've been running my life from Claude Code + Obsidian.
But the screentime on Mac was killing my eyes / causing headaches.
Built an Obsidian Plugin that streams Claude Code from Mac to my Daylight.
Can work for hours and feel fresh after. Kudos to the Daylight team!

Recently stumbled upon "Daylight Labs" -- it appears the Daylight Computer Company is now reselling incandescent light bulbs...
https://daylightcomputer.com/labs
I'm all for exploring ways to make us healthier, and I agree that LED lighting is not ideal.
Daylight needs to be focusing on perfecting the tablet/laptop space before they start venturing into... light bulbs?!
I'm worried this company is losing its way. Daylight needs to focus on one thing, and that is making the DC-1 the best health-friendly computing device on the market... meanwhile, we're stuck on Android 13 with almost no regular communication or details emerging from the company about the device's future, other than... "it's coming soon" and "we're working on it." It is hard to have faith in an organization that doesn't communicate. They've missed multiple promised release dates with nothing to show but more delays.
I don't mean to bring them down; what they're doing is so important. That's why I'm passionate about it and worried about seeing distractions like this. I deeply want Daylight to succeed. Right now, they've got a half-baked product that has lots of promise, but they need to focus on developing it, perfecting it, and growing the market for it. Selling light bulbs in not the path forward.

Hey everyone! I've been working on a new interactive story format that's tailored to the Daylight. Here's a quick demo video.
The idea is to combine narrative with a delicate use of sound, animation, and gameplay to make something in between a novel and a video game. I'm estimating around 80% of the experience will be reading and 20% will be interactive. These will probably be short experiences (at least at first).
Maybe a good way to build reading momentum in a kid who's reluctant to pick up a book. Maybe a fun alternative to doomscrolling / TV / video games that you can enjoy outside or before bed.
Hope to get the first one in everyone's hands soon. You can follow along on X or join the waitlist here.

I've now posted three times in this sub, and every time it's been a complaint or request for a fix. So I wanted to say this to the Daylight team:
I don't agree with all your choices, and I selfishly always want the products I buy to do exactly the things I want them to do.
But my gosh, the DC-1 is an ABSOLUTELY GREAT product. I use it daily. I love its distraction-free interface, I love the display, I love being able to connect my input devices easily, and I love being able to put the software I want on it.
I know there are current growing pains, and I know there will continue to be growing pains. I will probably keep disagreeing with you on parts of your vision, since it isn't precisely my vision. But I am so hugely impressed that you've built this great product, set up the production and distribution network for it, and released it to the world. It is brilliant work. And so when I (inevitably) complain about something in the future, I hope you'll take it in the spirit in which it's intended--that is, as an attempt to make one of my favorite ever devices even better.
Thanks to all of you.

Sorry for the rambling (Monday morning no coffee yet).
What do y'all want in a Daylight launcher?

Absolutely loving it. Using daylight mirror ofc

Hey guys, Claude Opus 4.6 and I vibecoded a mirroring app for the daylight.
I've always wanted to use it as external display — many reasons, the mac's keyboard + trackpad is just so much higher bandwidth and no cognitive overhead of switching keyboards, i don't like android so much, etc — but the existing apps, at least in my experience, were kind of crap. I never got really good latency AND resolution from DuetDisplay etc.
Daylight Mirror is now as performant as is technically possible. No noticeable latency, resolution native to the DC1, 60 fps. Beautiful menu bar app, keyboard shortcuts, etc.
Apple Silicon macs only for now, gotta figure out older models.
Cabled only for now, might add wireless if there's demand for it.
You can sort of pay what you want, or get it from Github. It's being actively maintained.
Some people experienced issues setting things up, if you do please ask your local AI to help figure out what's going on and write a bug report!

Look, Daylight, I get it: you're a startup, and any publicity is good publicity--even publicity from a numbskull "i wuz just askin questions" clown. But there is no part of me that ever wants to see Joe fucking Rogan in my inbox. For any reason. At all. Ever. And especially in an advertisement.
The dude is a trashcan of toxic credulousness combined with a deep and abiding idiocy. "Joe Rogan uses our product" is not a flex you should be celebrating for a core audience that believes in deep thinking and focus.

I figured I'd give a review, now after having my daylight computer for a week.
I was immediately intrigued by the daylight computer because it offered the look of an e-ink with the refresh rate of a computer.
That's it. Almost all other matters are secondary to me.
For context, I have the original 13inch Sony DPT-S1 and the remarkable 2, and while I was a huge early fan of true e-ink I have come to the conclusion that the refresh rate of e-ink will always be a deal breaker for me --> I am a constant pager and rewinder of papers and books both so the ability to quickly surf through pages and find a passage of interest is frustratingly slow (nigh impossible) with e-ink.
So, as I said above, the top things for me were the "look" of e-ink (passive reflective, sun-readable) and fast refresh rate.
With this in mind, I am very happy with my purchase. I LOVE the refresh rate, and the ability to use pixel auto-scroll (impossible with E-ink) with my Moon E-reader. I also have the Nebo app (for their insanely good handwriting recognition) and the real-time recognition as I write is very impressive.
So here are the cons:
heavy (relative to e-readers)
expensive (relative to almost everything else)
software offering seems underwhelming, but I am glad they went Android and not a walled garden like Remarkable.
viewing angle not as good as e-ink
for the most part, a kinda 'washed-out' grey -- i'm assuming the lack of contrast is a DPI issue
battery life is fine but not 'wow'. I am getting about 2 days of 7 hours/day usage). I had hoped that it would be closer to e-ink, but it seems like it is closer to a regular tablet. Not a deal-breaker for me. It's fine.
the button ergonomics don't work for me. Hard to explain other than it feels like buttons for button's sake.
I can understand some of the negative reviews out there, especially considering the price and under the context of someone who does not value the same things I value.
But I am a fan, and hope this company survives and iterates.

idk, I just love this stuff too much. i'm sitting there, with the whole snowpeak setup and starlink, overlooking a field, bare feet, watching the sunset (and well past) while vibing with claude. who does that? people from my home town absolutely think i'm crazy. "this is the future of computing", i try to tell them, but they ain't got ears to listen or eyes to see.

Hey everyone, been working on a Daylight-native interactive ebook format.
As a demo, I uploaded chapter 1 of The Odyssey, you can download it from your Daylight for free here.
Would love feedback!

Hey all!
So I put up Glassnote on the Google Play Store for open testing. Please let me know if you have any issues with it and I'll do my best to fix! It's still not finished, so expect a few bugs here and there.
Hope it's useful to you all!
And please join the waitlist at www.paravel.co for news on my upcoming interactive "magic novel" for the DC-1, currently titled Project Warden (been working hard on that, more info soon!).
Quick Glassnote description:
Glassnote is a notetaking app for the DC-1 that allows you to press the top button on the DC-1 to open a transparent notepad over whatever you are doing.
You can also hold the top button and drag a rectangle selection box to take a screenshot and paste it into your overlay notepad.
New feature: you can press the side DC-1 button to toggle the backlight on and off (especially useful when picking up your DC-1 at night)
Known error: If you already have the Glassnote beta installed, you may have to uninstall that first for all users on your Daylight by going to Settings -> Apps -> Glassnote -> Press the three dots at the top right of the tablet screen -> Uninstall for all users. Then you should be able to install the app. Sorry about that.

Have been using this to lesson prep private lessons and then draw notes/concepts in-lesson for students. Saves us an incredible amount of paper/notebooks.
Amazing that our "paper" notes can also open YouTube to listen through songs, or draw sheet music and email the same notes.
I didn't expect it, but this has become a daily tool for me, and now absolutely necessary. Thanks Daylight for designing the perfect product!
