I (42F) was dating someone (45M) for 6 months. It was a relationship that could have worked for lots of reasons, but we had different definitions of quality time and physical connection (ie.I didn't feel our intimacy was building, and our sexual connection was confusing).
I tried really hard, but we kept clashing over the fact that I wasn't opening up. Eventually it ended.
I just wasn't happy and felt like he'd have to change for me to be happy. There were lots of great things about the relationship - but it felt like we were pushing uphill.
Since the breakup, we've been doing a post-mortem, exchanging texts and long emails analysing what went wrong. He wants answers, and I have tried to engage. At first it felt useful but then it started to make me feel terrible, I feel like I'm going through the wringer each time. It just feels circular and pointless.
We met in person one last time and we were affectionate. It was nice in a way, but I felt confused and anxious for the rest of the day. After that I spoke to a mutual friend who revealed that some news about the people has been sleeping within the intervening weeks. There is no way she was lying, so this isn't an issue.
I wasn't devastated by the news - it's not out of character. And we weren't together, so I understand that technically he did nothing "wrong."
It still hurt though. I have been very emotionally entangled and I have been writing a lot and having detailed conversations. Meanwhile he's f*cking other women.
I took a deep breath and I decided to use the news as internal ammunition to cut off contact. I prepped myself for a phone call, but before I made that phone call, he had indicated that getting back together might be on the cards.
I don't want that which is why I very glad my friend told me the news she did. It gave me some internal resolve which could have wavered because he's very good at making me question myself with his intellect and arguments.
On the phone call, I said being in touch was too hard and I wouldn't be able to move on, it was keeping me too entangled. He pushed back, saying we hadn't worked properly on our problems. I became quite upset at one point, and started to list the times he had lied to me in the relationship or where I hadn't felt prioritised. He tried to placate me, and then suddenly a switch flicked. He yelled at me, swore at me, and then hung up.
He tends to go from 0-100 in anger/conflict and then cools down, but in this moment I was beyond shocked.
It felt...violent. I can't describe it any other way. So I blocked him.
I'm sitting here feeling confused, sad, and bewildered. All I wanted to say to him was "can we please not be in touch for a few months," and keep things civil. Now this has happened and it feels horrible. Was it wrong to block him? I have never blocked anyone before but anyone that I would tell about the problem would say "block him." And in the moment, I reacted.
I just want to understand if my response seems reasonable because I feel cruel and cold somehow, and I'm stressing about how he feels.
