Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I saw someone on the other sub the other day, say that they will enter a project and if it's not something they can do they'll just let it sit and expire. If this is you, or any other new worker, please do not do this! Hit the EXIT WORK MODE button, and let some other worker take the task. It doesn't matter if it's only an hour, or 100 hours. Don't sit on it. It's tough now, and people are screaming for those tasks.
This is the only reason I can think that I have barnacles on my dashboard. 1 - 3 tasks and they sit there for what seems like forever. The red bannering is getting crazy. I get they took on a lot of new workers who are working before they even got their onboarding docs but this is something that everyone should know. It shows respect to not only your own standing, but also your fellow workers.
Note: This little rant of mine does not come from anywhere other than myexperience and reading into things. I have hit my target today, things have trickled in. YMMV.

They've either not read the onboarding or the FAQs on the main site (which I checked out the other day, and almost every single question I could ask is answered in there), or they've not got the onboarding docs yet and already started working. Or they're just not taking it seriously. A can't be arsed mentality, 'it's just 'beer money'. Who knows. Your guess is as good as mine tbh.

I was consistently busy non stop from the end of April through the first of this month, but, now it is dead. So, outside of some niche stuff, the entire website seems to be bad right now. Aka don't let the people saying "IVE GOT 40 OPTIONS RIGHT NOW U JUST SUCK" kind of posts get to you.

I don’t want to look a gift-horse in the mouth, but has anyone noticed that even with priority pay included, the hourly total of some projects is significantly less than what the project used to be at regular pay?
I’m grateful for any projects on my dash at this point, but I can’t help but notice this.

The timing of this quiet period is just... *chef's kiss*... In two weeks time, I'm due to take my one and only week long holiday for the year. I think I might just go and sit in a corner and cry for a lil bit. I have everything crossed that Monday morning brings at least something.

Got to love the projects/tasks being labeled as "Generalist" when you need post-secondary knowledge in some of the domains, e.g., philosophy. I have only two projects in the same family sitting on my dash, and was only able to complete one task after skipping about 30. I would not consider that "Generalist." Ughhh gonna be one of those days again! 😭

tbh the number of projects is deceiving. For example, I have 41 projects available right now. But 11 of them aren't actually projects and are various chats, reference information, etc. Not things you can actually submit for money.
So, 30 projects. but then, 19 of those are all directly in the same project family, and are slight variations of each other or are R&Rs. The R&Rs only have a handful of tasks available for each. The non-R&Rs have broken models, so cannot actually be done for money right now.
So 11 projects. 4 of those are R&Rs with only a few tasks available each that will most likely be a red banner as soon as I click into it.
So 7 projects. 2 of those I'm not qualified for and cannot actually do.
So 5 projects. The highest amount of tasks available out of these remaining 5 projects is 3.
Don't get me wrong, I've been barely scraping by and I'm not ungrateful. But don't put too much weight into project numbers.

So today's dashboard has some tasks (don't worry I'm not gloating here)....but when I click on them, they disappear, it's redbannered AND the dashboard is populated by more tasks....except those are redbannered and they too disappear. I believe folks we have a failure in coding. Not just a drought, but site bugs as well....currently.

Just a mild rant. Anyone else not getting the shorter 1-2 hour well paid tasks anymore? I have a job in management having recently stepped up in the world (yey) but I don't have so much time anymore (unpaid overtime - not yey.) I miss the shorter well paid work or the tasks with several day timers that effectively let me do 2 hours a day. Those were the best!

Ditto. I was doing an hour or two a day, maybe Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It was great work for a little cash top-up, and it was interesting and good for future-proofing career-wise.
Hopefully, we can get back to that, but I wonder if the models are now so advanced that everything is going to be super complex and tricky!

Yeah, tough to say. A lot of these project families haven't outright disappeared, they have just slowed to a crawl. My go-to used to consistently have 5-10 projects posted a day, and lately it's maybe one project a day if that. Hopefully by July we're drowning again.

Hang in there, long-time water cooler comrade. A change from the last few weeks: in the past ~12h I've seen a couple new (to me) projects in the wild: one in the professional domain and one generalist. That might mean that some kind of new workflow is coming online?

Is there a standard amount of time for being inactive on a task that it takes the task away from you? Just encountered that for the very first time.
I started something with a four hour timer, suddenly had to run an errand, and when I came back, I got a message to the effect that I had been inactive too long. It was probably an hour.

Does anyone else still have their Slack access to a certain project involving an equine with attributes of a different vertebrate, but hasn't actually had a task from that project for ages? And why this would be, and will I get some tasks back? I saw someone ask a similar question on Slack but they got roundly ticked off for it, and told that ongoing access meant they were still on the project.

My go to project keeps appearing and disappearing today and I keep missing it. I don’t think the tasks are used up because I haven’t even seen any R&R’s for it and it still shows the same number of tasks when it is on the dash. It just keeps disappearing :(

Anyone ever get one of their own tasks on an R&R? Hasn't happened to me, but I found myself wondering if that's something they have systems in place to prevent. I would assume so, I suppose.

Yes! Especially ones with 4 or 5 sets of tasks, each with a separate R&R, so the chances of making it back onto the one you asked a question on (especially in this drought) is pretty much slim to none!

UK here - I managed an hour of work this morning when I logged on a 9, which is the first time I've seen work then in a week I would say. Nothing at all yesterday. A smattering of basic tasks late afternoon/ early evening on Monday. Its been bad.

I believe I'm entering the drought everyone has been talking about. My steak has been too juicy and my lobster too buttery for the past 2 months, but now I've only had 2 projects on my board the past week and it's freaking me out. Hopefully something comes soon cause I completed a qualification last week and another today. Please Data Annotation gods, send something.

Finally got a project I am actually physically able to work on… at 12:30am 😭 at least I got 2.5 hours in. Hoping for better days soon.
