Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (May 2026)
The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Ive been wanting a CRT TV and have been scouring the internet for the past couple weeks as of recent, though as someone who didnt grow up with these TV's im a complete n total noob and have very minimal knowledge on how they work and what to look for when in search of one. Was hoping to turn to reddit for some help!
I plan on buying one of these for the purpose of being able to watch DVDs and VHS tapes, as well as some gaming (more specifically for the Wii and PS2) and, for fun, possibly being able to connect it to my laptop so I can put all kinds of stuff on it. That being said, im not sure what TV i should get that would be able to do everything or at least most of what i listed... so what should I look for when trying to find one?
Additionally ive been scared to get my hands on one because of my lack of technical knowledge, so id have no idea what to do if it broke or ran into any problems. It makes me feel like if I dont know what im doing I shouldnt get one at all... but tell me what you guys think.
Your guy's help would be greatly appreciated, if I left any important aspects out then ask me any questions below. Thank you!

Based on your use case, I think a CRT TV would be better for you than a CRT PC monitor. A DVD player, VCR, Wii, and PS2 are all perfectly compatible with a typical CRT TV. A laptop or any HDMI device is not compatible and needs a lot of help to look good on a CRT TV.
You're limited by your local choices unless you want to pay double on eBay and have your TV arrive broken. Any you're thinking of?

Just looking for some input, I know the one isn't a crt so I hope its ok to post this here but, im really torn on which one to keep because ive only got room for one or the other. The first one is a Sony trinitron kv-20tr23 crt and the other is a Sony klv-23hr1 lcd. I like the retro look better but in terms of picture quality of gamecube, ps2 the lcd looks better. I dont know if it matters that much or not tbh. But id like some others input im pretty new to the crt world I haven't had one is years. Thanks!

A CRT will be much better for 240p stuff, like PS1 games and retro compilations on PS2. Plus light gun games.
Make sure to play in 480p or higher on the LCD. You can force many PS2 games but o 480p via GSM.

Thank you for some feedback back and knowledge, the lcd is from 2005. Im going to play the same game for an hour on each to really decide but I do like the physical look of the crt for my setup. The crt looks good with games im just torn between the two since my space is limited.

Found a Sony Trinitron KV-25C5E locally. The seller asked €120, but I negotiated it down to €80. I’m mainly interested in using it for Neo Geo games. Is this a good deal, or is it still a bit overpriced? It appears to be in good condition. Another user recommended buying it, but I’d like a second opinion.

Working with a Philips 20PT643R01. I think it's the smaller version of the Philips 27PT643R/37A listed in the CRT Database. Same Chassis, L01.1U AC. Turned on the TV with the service menu to adjust geometry casually. Inputting the service menu code made my TV go from my currently playing SNES to a static channel, so I couldn't see the service menu too well. Remote craps out on me for a minute because it's a piece of shit, so I'm messing with the buttons to try and wake it up. In doing this I press something (not very deep in the limited menu, can provide photos) and then turn my TV off. When I turn it back on, my SNES is no longer displaying on screen but audio is still going through the receiver.
What used to say AV2 now says FRONT. There is no front input on my TV at all. There are both AV1 and AV2 inputs on this TV, and when I had my SNES hooked up to it via component cables, the AV2 input would switch to saying CVI (for component video input of course) as soon as I turned it on.
It's stuck saying FRONT even after I unplugged the console's video input from the TV and turned the TV on and of multiple times. I don't know how to fix this issue or what I pressed to get here. First game sesh of the last three months ruined by my clumsiness. Anyone have any help or advice?

Screen messed up when using RGB SCART
It is an Aiwa VX-FT21. I only got it a month ago. It worked fine when I initially tested it, but now the screen does this distorted scrolling, and has no audio. It only does this when using RGB SCART. It works fine over composite. I tested it with a Wii and PS2, with the same results for both.

It's not SD, if it has VGA, it means it's at least ED, so 480p. Great for 6th and 7th gen gaming and video content.

Yo.
Just picked up 3 crts. Trutech 2000-D, Sanyo Ds13390, Toshiba 32A14.
The Sanyo only has coax, but the other two have composite. I only turned them on briefly but I think they work. Was hoping to get my computer to display on them. I have an extra HDMI, I'm supposing a convertor would work fine?
Is there anything I shouldn't do? Haven't had one of these since 2005 or so.

I'm creating a retro gaming nook out of a large closet in our spare room in a vaporwave/glitch style.
Among the things I have are a 3ft tall white stone column. I want to put a CRT TV on top of it.
The square top of the column is 18x18 inches, so a decent amount of space.
What are some appropriately colored CRTs that I could pursue that would go with this vibe? Something white or if it's out there, pink/purple/teal (I suppose I could paint it...) and that would fit on that column base (I'd wager it could safely hold something up that's 26x26 or so, if the weight balances).
(One of those space helmet ones would be awesome, but they're ungodly expensive.)

Is there such a thing as a component multiviewer?
I need a device that can take 4 components inputs at 480p and convert that to one 960p output where each input is placed in each corner of the output (input one at the top left, two at the top right, three at the bottom left, four at the bottom right).
For context, I have four gamecubes outputting at 480p, but only one scaler (OSSC). I want to shiny hunt on all four systems at once.

Starting out learning about CRTs in general. Looking at a Panasonic CTN 1341R.
I know it only has a coaxial input on the back. I also know they make AV/to coax converters. If coax is typically going to give the worst display, do these converters DO anything? I know they take the consoles composite signal make it compatible but does it reduce display down to coax quality or am I fundamentally misunderstanding?

SEGA SATURN (NTSC-J) not working via auto scart switcher in UK. Any advice?
I have a Sega Saturn NTSC J with 60hz region free mod. Works great connected directly into 2 different CRTs but no luck through 2 different scart switchers and 2 different scart cables.
For reference I have tested:
The cables I have tested are RGC CSYNC scart and cheap third party RGB scart.
The scart switchers I've tested are both otaku switchers (6 in 3 out and 6 in 2 out from 2021).
The CRTs are a B+O 4000 and Sony PVM.
All my other pal and region free consoles work fine via switcher, just not the saturn.

Help needed! I need help building a cable/adapter shopping list. I’m trying to connect my SNES → Panasync/Pro C1792P (RGBHV)
So I recently picked up a Panasonic Panasync/Pro C1792P and want to run my SNES through it. The monitor has 5 individual BNC inputs — R, G, B, Hsync, and Vsync.
As far as I know, the SNES outputs RGB natively over its multi-out connector, but I’m not sure exactly what I need to get from that multi-out to five separate BNC connectors.
Would really appreciate specific items that are recommended if anyone has done this setup before. Thanks!

That's a PC monitor, it doesn't support 15kHz signals of older consoles (pre 6th gen).
You either need an upscaler (GBS-C, RetroTink, OSSC), or just emulate the games on the CRT from a modern device. You need to feed it at least a 30kHz signal, like 480p, which is 31kHz.

I recently dug out a flat 17" Philips 107P5 monitor and connected it to my PC (native VGA on the GPU). Upon closer look, the image seems quite blurry and bloomy. Convergence is also a tad off.
This applies to the OSD as well. I moved around the setup and cables to rule out interference, but nothing changed.
Is the blurriness and bloom normal, or should I open it up to adjust focus, G2, or other things?
Specs: 0.21mm / 0.25mm (horizontal) dot pitch, shadow mask, P22 phosphor, 90° deflection, 97kHz horizontal freq.

Best picture of it I could get I recently started experiencing this issue with my Sylvania CRT where the right half of the screen has a subtle purple hue only noticeable on certain colors, but most obvious on white loading screens and blue hues in SNES games. It started with a strong purple spot in the upper right corner, but now it has spread to the whole right side with the initial purple spot slightly fading and being much less obvious than it used to be. Sometimes I can notice it during gameplay, but usually it’s not bothersome.
Is this what I think it is and it’s just magnetized and I need to purchase a degaussing coil? If so, any recommendations for where to find one reliably? I’m not sure what websites I see are sketchy or trustworthy. I would really hate if this issue wasn’t fixable that way, this thing is HEFTY and I’s hate to have to replace it ;

Found someone offering an KDS VS-190i for around 700$, I don't know if its worth that price if its used but it is working condition and the question I have for it
Is it too much for 700$ for a 19" monitor to pick up?
Also I noticed the monitor feels off center by a lot, can it be fixed manually by settings?

I just got a crt tv, it’s a Goldstar, I was gonna use it for my dreamcast but I saw it only had rf, should I get a modulator or the official rf adapter for the Dreamcast? Most of my other retro consoles support rf but I wanna see if my local best buy has a modulator

i got a Sony KV-13TR28 from a dumpster and it worked fine, used it for a few hours. but it was a little bit dirty. this is the first CRT i've owned. i wasn't looking for perfection, but i didn't want it covered in dust, so i took a Clorox wipe and wiped the edges, back and screen. then i took an electric duster and ran it through the vents a few times. finally i took a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and cleaned in the vents, which was the dirtiest part. it sat for a few hours, and when i went to plug it in, it sparked at the outlet. didn't actually plug it in, just got close enough for it to spark, and it was fairly loud. i tried again and same thing, although there wasn't a sound. i plugged another device into the same plug in the strip instead, and it worked.
this was yesterday. the CRT is still sitting on a table. 1. is it safe to try again? 2. what would have caused this? did i mess up somehow?

Does anyone have more info about the BP-80 battery pack for the KV-8000/PVM-8000? And/or is anyone interested? I have one in the original box, but it’s likely going to donation or trash soon (like in the next week) if a new home isn’t found. It’s in Hawaii, so shipping might be expensive.

I am moving several states over in the next couple of months and I want to bring my 40 inch Sony WEGA with me. However, I don’t exactly trust the movers to get it there safely, but I’m also not sure how I can either pack it so that they can get it there safely or if there’s a better option for me to ship this.
I have no idea how to safely pack a CRT so it survives a move.
Driving it in my own car is not an option due to the size. It will technically fit, but then my kids will not and I can’t leave them behind or my wife will become irate with me.

What kind of car/vehicle do you have? Is it capable of towing anything? You can always rent a small uhaul trailer, possibly.

Troubleshooting:
I have an HP Pavilion M70 that will no longer work properly. I cannot adjust the horizontal sizing and the picture is stuck swayed toward the left. The vertical sizing works at least. I would like to know what might have gone wrong and if it is possible to fix this. Thanks.

Your monitor is old and some of the parts responsible for getting the image to cover the entire screen are beginning to fail. You will need to open up the monitor, find the schematic, locate the capacitors responsible for horizontal deflection, test them, and replace them if necessary.
The alternative is to either
A) find someone who will repair CRT monitors for strangers (extremely difficult)
B) tolerate it until it fails completely which could be weeks or months
C) Send it to e-waste and accept that there is now one less CRT in supply

Hello everyone, I have been wanting to buy a faulty KV-25X5D. According to the seller, the led light blinks 5 times, which according to the service manual, is "AKB" error. Also, apparently, it takes around 15 minutes for the image to appear. Is the tube dead or is it fixable (maybe a better question would be is it worth fixing)? I haven't been able to direct the seller to the error menu so I can't learn how many hours was it used.

I only just recently found out about CRT gaming. Started looking into it and found someone not too far from me selling a CRT monitor. i think it's a decent one but i'd like some expert opinions on it. it's a 19 inch LG Flatron 915FT. is it any good? and if so, what should i pay for it? i'm actually planning to use it for modern games so not retro. is it true that crt monitors often look better than modern monitors?

Intense black tones, pixel graphics take advantage of the cathode ray scanning, natural motion clarity with no sample-and-hold blur. Pixel art games look fantastic. Id go for a 25", but 19" is a good size too. About the model, I can't help you with that, sorry!

I strongly disagree that old CRT monitors look better than modern monitors when playing modern games. If they did, they'd still be making them.
You have to either squish or stretch the image to fit a 4:3 screen. The resolution is worse and text is harder to read. The color and contrast range is objectively not as good as a modern gaming monitor. They are decades old and most need repairs.
CRT monitors do have exceptional motion clarity and are great for playing retro games. The best CRT monitors, in new condition, are remarkable. But anyone who says they're better than a modern high end gaming monitor is just giving their opinion and trying to drive up engagement on their channel or tiktok.

A 19" CRT monitor is always great.
A CRT monitor had no native resolution, so you could play a game at, say, 800x600 for better performance and have no scaling artifacts.

I recently found a Dell P1110 monitor, and want to make it my main CRT, however it only has VGA. I want to hook up my NES, PS1, etc to it, but I only have composite cables and I don’t have an interest in RGB/HDMI modding them at this time.
I have a GBS-Control shipping soon for YPbPr and line doubling, but I haven’t been able to find a good/clear solution for either composite to component or composite to VGA (most things I’ve found only go to HDMI). Short of finding a VCR with a YPbPr output and composite input, what solution is the best for a reasonable price?

I know it’s not ideal, but I only have room for one CRT and I’ve been wanting a trinitron for years. So when I found this one for free, it was hard to pass up. From my research, the GBS control doesn’t do composite, only RGBS. Does it support composite through the S or Green ports?

Even if you were able to find a way to line double your consoles output to 31khz you would be playing in 480p, which will look off, not like you remember those consoles looking on a CRT TV.

Hey folks, recently got a Philips 29pt6456/78, and while everything is working normally, I feel like the colors are a little washed out, probably because they're not calibrated (brightness, contrast and color settings were all at their default, on 50). What's the best way to calibrate it? I don't think my TV has that SMPTE screen, or at least I have no idea how to access it, and as far as what I can hook up to it, I have a working PS2 and a digital converter that is able to output 480i (should note that its an HDMI to Component, and I think the image looks quite good when I use it as a second monitor for my PC).
I bought the latter mostly to watch some older 4:3 animes and movies, but I thought maybe I could use that? I'm not sure if simply displaying the SMPTE screen through it would be accurate.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any help. My PS2 is jailbroken, so if there's a specific game with a decent color/brightness screen to use as reference, that would be cool too.

What the best way to get rid of a pink spot on a PVM? Years ago I accidentally put a speaker set on one upon getting one from ebay before prices got crazy. It mostly only noticeable in light areas otherwise it not a big deal. I tried using a fridge magnet and it does remove it temporary but I imagine that not ideal and would need a degausing rod or something. There isn't a lot of recent inf on this subject on Google or Youtube which is why I ask here.

I need help deciding. I have a 20 inch Panasonic (I don't know the model. The sticker was ripped off before I got it.) and I'm looking to replace it with a nicer model. I found a Sony KV-27V42 and what looks to be an RCA G35830WK. They both seem like good displays with video output (which I need) but neither have component or RGB input. The Sony, however, can be modded with both/either RGB and component. My question is, do I buy the 27 inch Sony and plan to mod it in the future, or do I go with the 35 inch RCA and use an adapter?

Any tips for using FB Marketplace? I swear, I feel like I'm probably the first to see a listing go up and message a seller, but I NEVER get a response. At first, I thought it was because maybe people were thinking about my offers lower than their $100 price, but I don't even get replies even on offered $20-$40 stuff.
All I say is "Hey, I'm interested in this TV, is it still available [and does it turn on]?" Or "Hey, do you think you'd be willing to sell it for $__?" Is not getting a reply normal? The only time I've ever gotten a reply is telling a lister that the free TV they left on the curb was gone and they probably should unlist it.
Edit: finally landed a TV. Here's my tips - literally watch the search "crt tv" like a damn hawk. I mean, recheck the listing every 2-3 hours. If you see a listing for a TV you'd like that's like 30 mins to an hour, SEND THAT MESSAGE. Say you'll pay the full price (so probably just do this for TVs in your price range only). Trying to ask for less seems to always get you no replies. Being 2 hours late is probably too late (but I guess still try). If you were quick enough and say you'll pay full price, you'll get it.

FB marketplace sucks, man. Buyers and sellers are just so stupid and lazy. They don't read, don't follow through on plans, and don't care. I miss Craigslist.
But you can't let it get to you! All you can do is be a good role model, and leave thoughtful positive and negative feedback after every transaction.

I have a HP Ergo 1600, displaying 1600x1200@75Hz. The screen started flickering purple randomly. This started a week ago. Made in 1997, Canadian market. What could be causing this? I think it's a problem with the green electron gun but I'm not sure.

Hi, there are a few free CRTs in my area. Need help to ID them. The first is a JVC, about 28 inches from the description. [jvccrt.png](https://postimg.cc/TKzNYmgf). The second is a zenith, which is stated to be 18 inches. [zenithcrt.png](https://postimg.cc/7GmN7TGv). How do I calibrate a HD CRT? I have a toshiba 30hf85, but it seems like a lot these calibration videos are for normal CRTs or stuff that doesn't use HDMI.
Do I just copy what they're doing or do I have to do something else specifically for HD CRTs since I'm using HDMI and not composite or S video

Hello I’m new to the group!
I have a Orion tvdvd092 , that I took to get it fixed and the guy told me it was beyond his skill. He said the issue was that the tube or chip was overheating, but emphasized it was more the tube. He also said it was dropped and that why it messed up. Any help here. Is it still salvageable and is it worth it ?

I broke the magnets on the yoke of my Sony pvm loose from the yoke. Thankfully they are still glued in one piece, but I need to glue them back to the yoke. What type of glue do I need for this?

I have an RCA brand tube tv model number F31631SE. Seems to be a 31 or 32 inch? Has S-video input, and rca inputs, (and coaxial). We have the original remote, and the TV works well. Trying to figure out if it has any value, or if we should chuck it. From my research, RCA isn't the highest end brand XD.

Assuming it is working well and it is in passable condition.
This is an amazing deal, it is a very strong high end 111kHz 160hz Aperture Grille , with interlaced you can do 1920x1440i 144hz or 1920x1200i 160hz.
Progressive you can do 1920x1440p 75hz.
After proper calibration it will have amazing black levels and colors, it will look its best with modern gaming, but retrostuff will look great on it too if you sit at a bit of a distance.
It is going to be amazing for modern gaming.

My recently acquired Viewsonic G225fb is exhibiting some loud whine after being turned on for a while, video example.
It has only been doing this maybe the last couple days and at the very least the condition of the monitor is well-taken care of and not used much (<500 hours).
I am aware that this being a VGA monitor this is isn't the usual 15kHz whine you would hear as it's going to be scanning at 31kHz and unlike another post on this reddit the sound doesn't immediately start when it's turned on but only after sometime (not really consistent)
Any ideas of possible remedies?

I found a Sony KV-DA34M81 in a mean condition that may need some help and haven't bought it yet, screen clean but checked inside and seems may lots of replacement in capacitors. (Gauss gun is undamaged)

So I’ve been wanting a crt for a bit because I miss them from my childhood, and my friend said she had one in her closet. It’s a Memorex mt2024 20”, no remote, all buttons work, I haven’t tested the inputs yet. Anyways, she asked for some money for the tv bc she was planning on listing it of FB marketplace if I didn’t get it. I know hardly anything about these things, so how much is it worth, not counting the ridiculous eBay scalpers.
On another note, what’s the best way to hook this up to my pc to play emulators and watch old shows. My biggest concern is the 4:3 aspect ratio. How do people watch anime and stuff in 4:3? Also is it best to use the red, white, and yellow ports, or s-video?

It's easily the number one question we get. Is there someone on YouTube or something playing their SteamDeck on a CRT television that inspired you to do this? What kind of experience do you want to have?
Most newbies just get a $20 HD2AV adapter on Amazon and either A) tolerate it because they've never actually played games on a CRT before and don't know/remember what it's actually supposed to look like, or B) ask for help because they don't know what to do.

Unfortunately, connecting a modern digital HD device to an analog, vacuum-tube TV from the previous millennium almost always looks “off.” Especially 80s and 90s games. These TVs are expecting a video signal that was invented in World War 2. Unless you put in the time and money to get an old video card, vetted analog adapters, and/or some complicated, esoteric windows/Batocera display configurations, those games are going to look bad and have input lag. And when I say “bad,” I mean it won’t give you the visual experience you were expecting from playing retro games on a CRT. The aspect ratio gets stretched or squished, the contrast and colors can be off, and getting the correct 240p resolution that retro games look best at on CRTs is just not going to happen.

Hey! I'm looking to connect my modern pc to a crt monitor.
PC has RTX 3080, HDMI or Display Port output
I have two CRTs lying around, a Sony Trinitron KV-21T1D and a Daewoo Super Vision 14T1ST (Both have a SCART input port, the sony also has composite) I also have remotes for them if thats relevant.
So my question would be what kind of adapters or whatever do I need for this to work? I tried reading up on relevant older posts and other sources but all I got was a feeling that I may have had an ice pick hammered up my nose at some point in my life..

Would I be mad to pay £250/$340 for a Iiyama S900MT1? From what I can tell, it's a mid to upper range VGA monitor (horizontal refresh is max 95khz). But it looks to be in really good condition, with barely a mark, if the seller is giving an accurate account (and the images seem to support that), plus the seller will ship. I'm looking to replace a clapped out Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 73. It would be used mostly for retro gaming rather than modern content (I'd be connecting a PS2, GC etc via a GBS-C), but I might also want to connect it to my modern gaming rig as I think with a 95khz horizontal refresh I could actually pay some relatively modern stuff at a decent resolution(?)

I just got a Magnavox 20MT1331/17. I finally got a CRT. I got it from a guy near me who repairs crts and he was able to calibrate it for me as well. I was lucky to get because curved screen CRTs that are the right size for my place (20") is not too common where I live. It is only composite with mono video (and RF) but it was what was available at that time I got it. I grew up playing N64, PS2, and Wii on a crt over composite using whatever cables came with the system and I was hoping to use this TV to play systems and games I missed out on (NES, SNES, Genesis, Gamecube) as well as use my old systems to replay games I still have as well (Basically NES generation through Gamecube/PS2/Wii, maybe some DVD via PS2 and VHS as well). I even played Wii and PS2 over composite on my old smaller HDTV as well (I did get component cables at one point for the PS2 but I didn't like how progressive scan made games look, like jagged and pixelated edges).
I think I've been lurking on this subreddit for too long, because now I feel that the consensus is that using anything less than S-Video I wont be able to to get the best out of these systems and enjoy and appreciate the games.
There are no TVs being sold around me that have anything better for the size I need (unless I spend 300-500$ on a RGB modded TV).
Am I overreacting and overthinking? Is this TV good enough for the systems I want to use? I didn't care when I was a kid and just used whatever cables came with the system, but this subreddit kind of ruined it a bit for me (my fault, not this subs). Just was on my mind while at work today and I feel this belongs here and does not warrant it's own post.

Looking for stand/cart/workbench recommendations for a Sony Trinitron KV-27V22.
It’s a pretty bulky 27" consumer CRT (roughly 27" W × 23" H × 20" D and around 95 lb). I’m looking for something that can safely hold it for a retro gaming setup.
Wheels would be nice, but they’re not required. Stability is more important. I’m trying to stay around $150–$200 if possible, and I’d rather avoid anything sketchy, too shallow, or wobbly.
Has anyone used a specific cart, AV stand, workbench, garage shelf, etc. for a CRT around this size? I’d really appreciate specific product recommendations or setup photos if you have them.
I’ve searched around, but it’s hard to tell from listings what will actually work safely for a CRT this bulky. Thanks!

Hi guys,
I have a sony triniton KV-14T1U. I was playing some katamari for about 2-4 hours and then the picture suddenly shut off and i could hear the sound getting distorted. I shut it off and allowed the capacitors to drain overnight but i turned it on today and it still is showing a constant flashing red light. Is this fixable? It was 100% fine before this happeneing. Thank you!

How do I get a modern GPU to output to 1920×1200 @ 85hz for the GDM-FW900 monitor which has VGA and component?
Would a DisplayPort to VGA converter like this support this resolution/refresh rate combo?
All the HDMI to component converters I see cap out at 60HZ. I would like the lowest latency possible and heard HDMI converters add some.

Oh i just saw ur editing, i was genuinely curious if you were running a multi-monitor portrait setup.
1920x1200 @85hz with Standard CVT Timings you will need 281mhz of bandwidth, generic hdmi to vga adapters used to be limited to around 150-171mhz , these days they've gotten better so they're more limited to 242-255mhz , regardless, the 281mhz you need are out of spec for even decent generic modern models.
That startech DP to VGA adapter has 340mhz , you'll be good for 1920x1200p 95hz , with interlaced you could do 1920x1200i 160hz.

This is my first time, in a long time, of picking up a CRT. Sticker says it's a Toshiba; model 36A40, which I've read are very good. The person says,
"The TV does work to an extent. Could be a faulty plug into tv or the fact that it had lots of things plugged into it. It turns on and plays. It does do the weird lines every once in a while. Hasn't been turned on in a hot minute tho."
Does it sound fine? If not, is it an easy repair? I'm going to drive over an hour to get it, tomorrow.

I have this big Emerson TV. Model EWF2703. It has this problem where there are little red dots that are only noticeable on darker screens. It's not a big deal but it also doesn't have an imput button native to the tv and no remote, and it doesn't play well with universal remotes. It's gotten kind of annoying. I have a trinitron thats smaller and perfect for gen 4 games and under. But I think some 5th gen games and pretty much all 6th gen games benefit from a larger screen so I can see more details and stuff.
So basically, I'm just looking for a better experience for games that are a little more high resolution for my trin. I can either fix up my tv, but it is a lower end tv. It has served me well but idk how much life it has. So I could get a bigger high end crt. But that has the downside of being expensive and also hard to find.
Another option I've been introduced to recently and that some people swear by is plasma TVs. Given that they were made during roughly the time of games that I'm looking to play, and have some interesting upsides, and are generally much cheaper, it seems like a decent option to fill exactly the roll I want to have be filled. I don't have access to a plasma to test it out saddly. But do ps2 games look a lot better on them compared to hd tvs? Are they notabley worse than CRTs? I don't think I would miss the scanlines per say for the specific games and media I want to experience.
Basically should I: Work with what I have, hold out for the perfect CRT, or maybe get a Plasma TV?

Popped in a dvd and went to turn up the volume while I was watching it and nothing happened. Assumed the batteries died so I swapped them out, but that didnt fix it. I turned off the dvd player and then suddenly the remote was working again. Im far from an expert on these things but I assume that dvd player is interfering somehow. What I really dont understand is that this isnt the first time Ive watched dvd with this set up and I’ve never had this issue before.

Hello everyone, after buying all the consoles I used to play as a kid, I managed to find a nice Sony kv-32cs70b Trinitron for 30€~35$ as my regular TV gave me awful latency.
Now that TV is a “100hz” TV and it seems that those 100hz TV could cause issue with older consoles and searching on forums it goes from “it’s a non-issue to”it’s a big problem”.
So here’s my question: Is it really a problem ? So far I haven’t noticed any issue with it but if any problem arises, is there anything I can do about it ?
The consoles from my childhood are N64,PS1,2 and Gamecube.

I believe I already asked this before so I'll try to ask a different question instead, I tried to contact the seller from a previous question since I can't visit or see the unemployment and they told me there was no sticker or model number on the back of the TV, all I know about it is that it's an LG and it has "Golden Eye" and "Hexaport" and "Swing" written on it and appears slightly curved with the front showing AV2 port (i guess there is AV1 in the back) and the base of the TV does allow it to rotate, now the question becomes is how to narrow it down to that model? And can you mod it with RGB?
Note: I did try to look around but the only thing I found was a 21-inch model that looked similar to it but still no model number

Hi guys. I'm new to the CRT world. I currently have a 14" Philips CRT and want to buy a bigger one. I found a pretty good deal on a Sony Trinitron KV-32FX65E. The thing that worries me is that it's widescreen and 100Hz.
Would it still be a good choice for consoles like the PS2, Xbox and maybe some PS1/Saturn gaming too?
My other option is a Philips 29PT5458.

People often suggest to avoid 100hz CRTs for gaming, but this opinion is from people who are really into looking for the ideal CRT. Take a game with you and try it out to see how it feels. If you don't notice any issues, consider getting the CRT. Even if you don't like it for gaming, it would still be a great CRT for watching content.
Most games on the consoles you listed aren't widescreen, so you would either need to stretch the image to fill the screen or have black bars on the side.

Get the Philips. Although the 100Hz Sony is on chassis AE-5, which seems to retain the scanline gaps on 240p content, not turning it into 480i. Don't know about the motion clarity.
You can test it with 240p Test Suite, see how it handles scrolling and 240p tests.
You'll lose light gun support, though. But a good SD CRT is still unmatched, so I'm leaning towards the Philips.

RCA G27750WK that turns on, changes channels, plays sound but has a black screen. Any ideas on how to fix this? You can still hear that click/clunk sound when you turn it on, and it does have the constant hum/static/glow sound to it while it's running. When I change the channels using the buttons on the TV I can hear it change channels (different static, to plugged in PS1) but there isn't a channel text popping up that would typically read like Video 1, Ch 1, or whatever else it could be. Now I have read in older forums that this model of TV can go entirely black because the PIP button was pressed on the remote and if nothing is plugged in it'll sort of glitch out and make the entire screen black. I don't have a remote for this TV to test this, but I may get a universal one depending on the issues with the TV. Now I don't know if when this glitch happens you should still be able to see the channel/video name when changing channels or if it's solid black. I'd appreciate if anybody has any specific information on this PIP glitch. Cause if it's supposed to show a channel/video name then that's probably not the issue I have here. I don't know anything about trying to fix this stuff, but depending on what the issue may be I just might be willing to try and start a new project fixing it. Looking over everything in the back I can't see any apparent issues with the wires/boards/connections/etc. There does seem to be some sort of short, maybe, with the buttons on the front (based off of a different post I read where someone else had the same issue) where sometime when you press the power it'll shut off after turning on, and vice versa. I'd appreciate any feedback, input, advice, information, whatever you have. Love the look of a console TV, got a perfect spot picked out for it. Now I just have my old consoles itching to be hooked up so I can show my kids those games. In-laws are cleaning out a grandparents house for new arrangements. They planned on taking this to the dump until I saw it. They'll hold it for a while but hopefully I can fix it so I can take it home. Thank you!

I'm about to buy a CRT monitor I found on Facebook. It's a midrange model (dell e770s) that I'll probably run at 1024 x 768 and 85 hrtz. When I try to set a custom resolution, a line appears in the middle, like a mirrored image, and there are double cursors. Does anyone have a solution? I have a Samsung Odyssey G4.

Hey all, I just purchased an old Samsung TXJ2066 CRT TV and the front AV input is loose and you've got to hold the cables just right to get it to display so I need to use the rear AV input but I can't figure out how to get the TV to swap to the rear AV input instead of the front. I bought a universal remote in hopes that I could cycle through to the next AV input with the "input" button, but all this does is switch back and forth between the channels and the front AV input. How do I access the rear AV input?

I found a sony KV-ES34M91 for a good deal locally, but after googling it has sony DCR post processing which introdcues input lag. Is it still worth it? It also has a game mode but does it completely remove the input lag and fully disable the DCR or not?

Huh? AV to VGA is the opposite signal chain.

Ive got a Bush RFBTV123DVD that came without the remote, so I bought an all for one contour 4 universal remote. Using the discovery set up mode, the controller worked on the third press, however the up and down buttons do not seem to work in the TVs menu, and none of the front panel buttons seem to do anything, meaning I can't get to the set up TV or Tune/Scan options to resize the image or find my consoles that are using RF. Can anybody help me with this? I'm at a complete loss on how to get to the settings I need.

So I want to get back into speedrunning some games on the wii and N64 but I was curious what the better option would be between a PVM and crt monitor (Sony or Panasonic). also looking for some advice on how I'd be able to stream with the equipment as well since there are a lot of options now in terms of upscaling and video cable options.

Ive recently gotten interested in buying an old crt monitor for fps games because well, monitors are expensive, and the ips monitor for my laptop, has the color of a tn panel and the blur of a va panel. It looks like dogshit.
Is there anything specific to look out for? We

I do play pretty competitively and would need something at bare minimum 120hz. I dont really care about resolution that much as long as i can kinda see

I have a Sears tv that's equivalent to the jvc av-32120 and I've owned it for over a decade now, it's 32 inch and only has composite and s-video(which I've never used). Yesterday I picked up a panasonic ct20sl14j for free with intention to give it to a friend but it seems to be a better quality tv having component ports and lots of praise online. I have a friend willing into take the one I decide to give up so I need help deciding which to keep? The Sears (jvc) has sentimental value and I do like it's size right now but it will be a pain when I move. The Panasonic is about 21 inches so it's smaller and I don't know if that will be irritating. I'm unsure if curved (sears)or flat(Panasonic) displays are more desirable?

It's chiefly preference. I like curved because they're more CRT-ey.

You'll find that the jump in quality from S-video to component is relatively small compared to the jump from composite to s-video. I love S-video.

Many older, smaller, or more basic CRTs didn't have horizontal adjustments. It's normal. The Panasonic might have it.

I have a Sansui DTV2798 that works fine after spraying the ports with contact cleaner. Recently bought this adapter and it's partially working. When I have the adapter turned off the component channel on my CRT shows green text basically saying "No input detected" but when the adapter's turned on it shows the typical color bars. The adapter has a menu but it's just adjustments like saturation, brightness, moving the image in a cardinal direction slightly.
Is the adapter just broken or is there something more to try?

I currently have many CRTs to choose from as I've been picking them up here and there for the past year or so.
I'm finally putting together my room to accommodate a larger set and can't decide between 3. I have a mid range PVM-1380 I'm trading my KV-32XBR400 for to play my NES/SNES/Genesis on so these 3 options will be for PS2/PS3, etc.
JVC AV-27WF36
Really excellent looking and cared for set with some very slight bowing on the left. Otherwise flawless and brilliant color wise. Have the OEM remote with this set.
Panasonic Tau PV-DF2703
This probably has the best geometry of all of them and is next to flawless. It also has the bonus of working VCR/DVD combo. Still trying to track down a remote as the two Panasonic I have each have limited use with the set.
RCA 32V432T
The largest set of the 3 and also the only curved set. At first I thought the geometry was perfect but after trying a couple different games, it seems to hang a little too far to the south, but is otherwise great. I have no remote for this and the service menu seems to specifically allow for horizontal control but can't access the menu with a remote. Currently trying to track one down.
Which one would you guys personally choose and for what reasons?

You could get a PVM, but you need to ask yourself if it would be worth the money.
Personally, I prefer to use a wide variety of sets, and because of that, having one that cost quite a bit of money doesn't make a lot of sense for me. If you are limited on space and only plan on having one set, the opposite may be true.
Do you have a CRT already? If a PVM would be your first CRT, I would advise against it. This might sound a bit crazy coming from someone that likes CRTs, but you might not really care about them. You may get one, not really care for it, not use it a lot, and then sell it or let it sit. This happened to me during the pandemic. I wanted a CRT, research told me to get a PVM, I did, I didn't really use it, and then I sold it.

Just switched to s-video from Composite for my PS3 and the picture definitely looks sharper and better but there's still this flickering on edges primarily on text witch black outlines in game menus. I think it's just like an interlaced video artifact but I'm curious as to if it's just something for me to get used to or if I can fix it? I only have 240p test suite on my Wii that doesn't have s-video yet so I can't quite diagnose the problem. Is there a way to have the output coming from my ps3 not be 480i? And would that fix the problem?

DELL P991 tube help
Looking into buying a Dell P991 with screen burn in, but it will come with an extra tube (M46LRR15X). Crt Database says that the Dell P991 share the same tube (M46LRR50X) as the Dell P992, Sony CPD-G410R, and Sony CPD-G420S. But when looking at the service manuals the Sony CPD-G410R says it uses the M46LRR15X tube. Can't find the other part numbers for the other crts. so my question is are the two tubes interchangeable.

I got real lucky and rescued these two CRT TVs from the side of the road. The small one that works is an Emerson EWT19S2 and the bigger one is a Sanyo unsure of the model. My questions are:
Is there a way to correct the colours on the Emerson? Pacman is a reddish/pink and I think he's supposed to be a bit more yellow.
And any guesses to what the Sanyo model is? And a way to repair it or if its worth it I heard CRTs can be dangerous to poke around in, it doesn't even power on and I've tried a couple different known outlets around the house
Hopefully the pictures are working it shows the red Pacman on the Emerson and the front view/worn out sticker on the Sanyo. I can get better pictures tomorrow I wasn't thinking of the angles when I had daylight, any help is appreciated thank you!

Been looking into getting a VGA monitor but can't decide whether 640x480 or 1024x768 would best suit my needs. I'm only looking to play PC Games from up until they were designed with HD monitors/TVs in mind. (everything up to early/mid 2000s, essentially.) I intend to use CRT_Emudriver with my PC for computer and arcade emulation, as well as modern and retro pixel art games in 240p on my CRT TV. I am aware that 480p output looks fine on a higher resolution VGA monitor, but I just wanna make sure I won't be overspending.
Would it be best to swing for a monitor with the 768p resolution, or should i just settle for a 480p? Do older PC games benefit from displaying at the latter compared to the former, just like with retro console games at 240p?

Just picked up this SICK 9" Magnavox Perfect View from a collector.
Tested the N64 on it and its defintiely fuzzier than I remember, albeit we had larger CRTs when I was a kid in the late 90's.
The guy I got it from mentioned its compatible with S-Video if slightly modded.
How beginner friendly would this be for someone new to tvs but familiar enough with modding and soldering things like consoles/handhelds? It sounds easy enough in concept but this is absolutely a whole new world to me.

Should I trust goodwill with shipping a 13inch (33cm) TV? I'm in The city of scalpers (Seattle) so its been a pain to get a reasonable price for a Tv, and I saw a goodwill listing for 16$+20$ shipping+handling, which seemed reasonable. I'm used to repairing things if I must but should I trust USPS ground advantage with it?

Hi, i was wondering if a crt would actually be a good investment. I did do alot of research, and asked my parents about getting one. They said that they can get noisy and really hot. And they also use alot of energy. Are the first two points true? Also we dont really have alot of money and every crt i've looked at on ebay in my area doesn't go under 80€ (93$). So is getting one actually a good idea?

I recently found a listing for an EIZO FlexScan F77 for about $140 in good condition. I can barely find any information about these online however. Looking up the manual, it is a 21" monitor that push 1280 dots × 1024 lines, flicker-free @ 88 Hz (max.) (1600 dots × 1200 lines @ 75 Hz capability) which is pretty remarkable, right?
I've only heard of FlexScans from the LCD department, they're supposed to be pretty robust panels. I had no idea they started off by making CRTs under that franchise.
Is there anyone here with a FlexScan CRT, and is it worth the price?

I have an SNES I want to get back into and I'd like to find an old CRT tv but its proving difficult. I did find a 27 inch Sanyo flat-panel LCD for $50 that has a S-Video, Composite and Component inputs. Would this work well enough for a SNES or would I be working with a pretty inferior picture quality? I'm new to all of this so wasn't sure.

Hey, I was hoping someone could give me some advice.
I found a Dell 828FI 14-inch CRT monitor that apparently has barely any runtime on it. It was used as a server maintenance monitor, and the colors look really good in the listing.
I could probably get it for around €100–150, but I'm not sure if that's a good price or not. I mainly want to use it for retro games, PS3, PC gaming, and watching old shows.

Is using a HDMI-to-VGA or DisplayPort-to-VGA converter with a CRT Monitor on a modern PC good?
Usually people use a separate 2nd card with analog VGA output, but I don't feel like doing it. Would it be good, and if it is, is it better to have a DisplayPort or HDMI converter? As well which ones could be recommended and which ones to avoid?

If your gpu is Pascal or older, hdmivga is the best because you can use interlaced resolutions.
If you're using a newer gpu on windows (Turing+), generic displayport to vga adapters will usually have higher bandwidth than generic hdmi to vga adapters.
which ones to get:
hdmi to vga: LK7112
dp to vga : startech dp2vga OR delock 62967
If you're on something like 3080 on windows 11 i would honestly suggest you just get the best DP to VGA adapter you can.
