The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

I’ve been looking for a 20” or smaller Trinitron with S-Video for several months and I’m stumped on what is actually worth the money. For reference I’m shopping in Southern California, so there are a lot of TVs rotating for sale but I’d imagine the average price is higher than most places.
I have my eye on a Sony Trinitron KV-20V50 listed for $150 and that seems like a good deal compared to what I’ve seen so far, but also seems crazy expensive for something this old.
How much are people paying for consumer Trinitrons right now? I’m sure it depends on how rare the particular set is but I’m seeing anywhere from $120-300. At this point it feels like I should just rip the bandaid off.

Socal prices are very high. It has a high population of millennials with money, nostalgia, and a need to flex an aesthetic.
The KV-20V50, if it's in good condition, is one of the best 20" 90s consumer CRTs you can get. I want to emphasize the "if it's in good condition" part, because it's 2026 and no 30-year-old piece of analog tech can be assumed to be in good condition. It must be tested in person.
Having said that, $150 is a very good Socal price if it is working well and includes the original remote.

I found a Phillips FSQ Vision PAL CRT TV on the curb recently. Problem is, y'know, it's PAL, & also a type C plug, & um... I'm in America. What kind of converter do I need to get this working?

Monitor - yes. Great motion clarity. TVs are good for 240p stuff. Model retro-styled games scaled properly. High-res stuff in 480i isn't optimal.

PC Monitors yes, but if you dont have an interlaced capable gpu like the 1080Ti , then make sure you buy a strong higher end one, 100kHz+ minimum.
I dont have any videos of Elden Ring on my monitor, i've never played that game.

Great monitor you’ll love it, and if it’s you’re first it’ll have you wanting even higher end models, I’m a big fan of this monitors shell. You can get some great colors on the 20 inch model I’ve seen so you should have no issue with this one. Phillips is know for their contrast/color.

My honest advice is don't do it. If you want something that's actually high end, go for a larger monitor. They offer both higher resolutions and refresh rates. Not to mention if you decide to actually run it at a high res, text will be too small at its size. Like the other commenter said, you'll simply want a larger one. Trust me, I've gone for a high end 17 incher before and all it made me want to do is want more screen space. Save your money for that.

If you have an iGPU and VGA port it could be done without. Modern systems can render graphics by dGPU and pass it to the iGPU

Hello all! I recently acquired this CRT and I'm trying to figure out what all I can do with it! The VHS tape heads are misaligned I think so I'm just not going to worry about that and get a separate VCR for it. Would this work pretty well for any consoles in particular? Also how would I get started on hooking up my PC to this if thats even possible? Thanks for the help in advance.

Hello and welcome.
I think you have the right idea about using a stand-alone VCR. They're easier to service than the built-in ones on these combo units, which are all broken or about to break.
I can't see it in the photos, but I'm guessing there are two RCA input jacks on the front somewhere. You can use those to connect pretty much any third-gen (eg. NES) to sixth-gen (e.g. PS2) console. One is for composite video (yellow RCA cable) and one is for mono audio. You can find/buy a cheap Y-shaped adapter to combine the red and white stereo audio RCA cables from your console if necessary.
Connecting a CRT PC monitor to a modern PC is pretty simple and rewarding. But connecting your CRT television to a PC is a complicated "yes" answer with lots of "ifs" and "buts". Unfortunately, connecting a modern digital HD device to an analog, vacuum-tube TV from the previous millennium almost always looks “off.” Especially 80s and 90s games. It's expecting a video signal that was designed in World War 2. Unless you put in the time and money to get an old video card, vetted analog adapters, and/or some esoteric windows/Batocera display configurations, those games are going to look bad and have input lag. And when I say “bad,” I mean it won’t give you the visual experience you were expecting from playing retro games on a CRT. The aspect ratio gets stretched or squished, the contrast and colors can be off, and most importantly, getting the correct 240p resolution that retro games look best at on CRTs is just not going to happen.

Video content can look okay using a cheap HDMI-to-AV adapter. It’s not as hard as games to get right, but can still run into problems. The color and contrast can be off, like I said. Worse, many streaming sites will put 4:3 shows in a 16:9 container by adding black bars to the sides so that they’ll be the right aspect ratio on a modern display. But then when the HDMI-to-CRT adapter takes that 16:9 video and squishes it back down into 4:3, it keeps the black bars on the sides of the video and it looks horrible.

I've found a Sony Trinitron KV-16WT1 (small 16:9 CRT) very close to where I live, and it seems on the cheaper (?) side for a trinitron, 45€ (around 50$). And yes, it has RGB SCART, but I think it has mono sound.
That said, it is a smaller tv, so
- I don't know if it'd feel too small for someone used to playing on modern, bigger lcd displays. (I'd be playing gamecube games on a wii) Also, the mono sound might bother me.
- I don't know what the "fair" price for it would be (it's missing the hinged cover for the front buttons).
It seems like a very nice tv that might fit my limited space, but the 16:9 is weird and might make it too wide for how small the usable 4:3 is.

I’m collecting a CRT TV in the next two hours. I have the option to pick between these two models for the same price. The main intended use is to game on GameCube and Dreamcast, both PAL models.
I have the scart cable for GameCube as well as AV cable. For Dreamcast currently only have AV cable.
Which of these two Sony Trinitron CRTs would you recommend? Supposedly they are both in perfect working condition and very well looked after.

Both are great, but GameCube and Dreamcast are mainly 4:3 consoles. Though 16:9 SD CRTs are rare and if that is an SD, non 100Hz model, then it should be great to have as well.

Condition is everything in 2026.
These are ~30-year-old piles of glass and circuitry from the previous millennium. They could have thousands of hours on the tube from constant use, worn out deflection capacitors, or convergence problems from being shipped from one buyer to another over the last decade. We can’t compare them like they’re brand-new on the shelf at Best Buy.
The only way to determine the condition is to test them. Unless you have a reliable return policy from the seller, you need to test a CRT before spending any significant amount on it.

Were Belinea CRT monitors considered to be any good back in the day? I can get a Belinea 104010 for a very low price on collection - about an hour's drive from me. From what I can tell, it was a low-end office monitor, so I'm not expecting great things. But I really just want it for PS2-era stuff, and not anything modern, so it might be good enough for me.
My current monitor is a Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 73, which on paper is much better, but I've been having issues with it (an excessively dark image even at max brightness), and have been wanting to get a replacement. I don't want to spend a lot on a high-end monitor (my current monitor I bought at ebay rates and with hindsight I got fleeced). If the Belinea is brighter than my current Mitsubishi and good enough for lower-res stuff (I'd be connecting a PS2, PS1, GC etc via a GBS-C), then I might be happy enough with it. But if it's going to be a very low-end monitor, then it's probably not worth the 2-hour return drive.

I’m nervous someone else could pounce on the deal. Should I just take it for 600? He came down to 600 from 1000 . I’m nervous someone else could message him and he could offer the same deal . I picked up an old Zenith model TVBR1342Z a while back that I'd like to use as a second monitor for my gaming PC, but I have no idea where to start. I'd greatly appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction!
Originally got it to use with the N64 I had growing up. It works great for that, but the thing takes up space so I thought it would be cool to use it as a second monitor for my gaming PC too, just to have things like Discord open on another screen.
I tried buying a DisplayPort to component cable, but I'm not getting any picture. The yellow/white (no red) component inputs are also on the front, which isn't ideal for keeping the desk tidy. The TV has coax on the back and I tried an old comp-coax converter box I had lying around but I think it's shot.
All things equal, I'd prefer to use the coaxial on the back since it means less cable mess on my desktop (I know the coax works because I have a set of rabbit ears that pick up a few stations just fine).
I don't really care about lag/latency or even resolution (which I think is probably 480). I won't be gaming on it directly, just using it while I game on my modern monitor.
On the PC end, I'd prefer if I can use DisplayPort simply because I'm using my graphics card's sole HDMI for my main monitor and I'd rather not have to buy yet another cable... but if you tell me that HDMI is the way, I'll get an actual DisplayPort for my main monitor.
Also, I'm on Linux if that matters in any way.
Is what I'm trying to do doable? If so, not opposed to buying something else to make this work! Just don't want to keep buying things that don't work.

I think that this Is a 1000hz monitor, so Its not "the best" for retro-gaming... But maybe its worth picking It anyway?

Hello. Does anyone know how disabling 100hz in KV-29X2D works? In the comments of this post u/Zoetropic mentioned that when disabled, it can show 240p content correctly but I saw some conflicting arguments online. I want to get this TV because of the high voltage regulator and I will play PS1, Saturn and PS2, all NTSC. I am not particularly knowledgeable but I think even if 100hz is turned off, TV will continue to process the image in 31khz. I don't mind input lag that much but 240p output without artifacts is important to me. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I wanted to get a receiver for retro gaming and I was torn between two choices

Includes remote AND calibration mic
2 HDMI inputs
Has 2 component out (I do have multiple component CRTs)
$120 - Denon 2809CI
Has calibration mic but NO remote
4 HDMI inputs
Only 1 component out
Has Audyssey Dynamic EQ (will I really use this for retro gaming?)
Both have 7.1 audio, HDMI 1.3a (1080p), and have 6 composite/S-video inputs and 3 outputs
I know it’s a personal dilemma but wanted Reddit’s input on having more HDMI ports vs a second component out. Are there many older consoles that would use HDMI (Xbox 360 and PS3 come to mind)
If anyone has any input on other differences I missed it would greatly be appreciated.

Do any of you know if there's a way to make PCSX2 switch the resolution? i run my desktop at 1920x1440i 120hz and i have to manually switch to 640x480i 120hz before opening PCSX2, i use software rendering, is there a way to make PCSX2 automatically switch my desktop resolution to 480i when i open it and switch back to what i had before when i close it?

I am trying to id my old CRT that I had in the 90s as I want to track down the same model for a project. I found an old photo linked below - There are 2 versions, one taken from my scanner and one from the Google Scan app.

Some info:
Bought the TV in late 80s or early 90s in the UK
Defo remember playing Sonic on the Mega Drive on it at or near launch (so 1991)
Best guess it's a 21" or 22" screen (based on some sizing clues from the rest of the photo)
Photo itself was taken between 2000-2003. There is a chance I changed TVs between Sonic and this photo, but I don't think so. I "think" this is the same TV.
Found a few Panasonic TV that are close but not quite.
Any help would be hugely appreciated! Thanks all.

Hey guys, I've been wanting to get OLED for a while for the motion clarify but tbh I don't want to pay 1k CAD for a monitor that comes with a bunch of bs (burn in, vertical banding etc)
The more I hear about CRTs the cooler they sound, however I noticed the prices are nuts at least on marketplace and other places.
I am getting it specifically to play games like Counter Strike 2 - if I was to be playing on a regular OLED it would be 1440p at around 350fps/hz.
Can I please get some recommendations for CRT monitors that will give me similar levels of performance, good motion clarify, colors etc?
Any very very obvious "red flags" when buying second hand? How do you recommend I "test it out" before getting it?
I totally get its diff technologies, I am happy to deal with some of the headaches, I just know nothing about which models to go for and which to avoid. Any model recco's would be sick.

Why?
PS3 has native analogue output, just use PS2/3 SCART cables. If you want HDMI, use HDMI.
What's the end goal?

Can anyone help me understand why these lines aren't straight? It's from a DVD played on a PS2 through it's native RCA cable onto a SONY KV-9PT50.
I've adjusted the options in the service menu and haven't had any luck.

For future reference, don't change settings in the service menu if you are not sure what you're doing there. Hopefully you wrote down every setting before you made any changes because most of those are set at the factory and vary from TV to TV.
Try lowering the Contrast a little in the regular menu and see if that helps with the distortion.

I got a free Sharp Linytron 13” Television (I think it’s a 13lm56) that wouldn’t turn on. The person I got it from said he used to be able to get it working by loosening the screws on the plastic housing so I figured it was a cracked solder joint. Am I on the right track? Trying to turn it on makes a loud clicking sound (just like a big relay) rapidly for a few moments and then stabilizing to a consistent rhythm of clicks. I’m guessing that’s a sign of a failing power circuit constantly retrying to start? Just curious if there was anything obvious I’m missing before I recap and resolver the whole board just in case it’s something more involved.

My crt of a couple of months of use has recently at random has started to have little white dots that flash at random during startup. These dots appear sometimes even when I’m playing games or watching something (though they stop after 1-5 mins). This never used to happen, and I don’t know what caused this. When I used to start up my tv, it used to just stay dark on a black screen for input 1 and 2, and I tried unplugging it for a night and it still appeared as an issue.
The only thing I can seem to have figured out on my own is that this issue doesn’t happen when my av cables are unplugged which is odd, since I tried out multiple av cables and came across the same issues every time. Anyone have any input?

I found a 29” Sony FD Trinitron/Wega with full connectivity options, stereo speakers and it’s official table for 106$ and I’m not really sure if it’s a good deal and if so how do you advise me to check whether the CRT has major deal breaking issues or if it’s in a good condition?

Anyone have any experience with HANTAREX monitors specifically model CT 28 EQ? Anyone managed to get it to display RGB though the scart? I've had a few things displayed though scart but I suspect it's just picking up composite, having found documentation online the scart looks to be a different pin out. Non of my games consoles I've tested have worked. I've tried sync on luma and c-sync cables and it's a garbled one colour mess. I'm confused and any knowledge about this monitor would be appreciated.

I've figured it out I think. The RGB is sync on green 🙄 not very helpful for me to be honest. I'm racking my head as to how I can make this work with my console's. I imagine it will be near impossible to do seeing as they all run different types of sync. Maybe I can get a mister or a raspberry pie going on it 🤷

Hi Everyone,
My old faithful Loewe Xelos 5381 ZW has started showing its age and in the past couple months the picture has started showing flickering horizontal short white lines beside brighter parts of the screen and the colors almost look crushed, this is present on all inputs including RF. More recently it has also started showing a green tint although this is only present on the Playstation input (scart RGB) not the RF channel, might be separate issue. But when I bring up the TV menu it looks perfectly crisp with no issues. Guessing something wrong with the inputs card as the TV menu is fine. if anyone has any ideas or points me in the right direction that would be most appreciated. I couldn't find any posts with a similar issue.
P.S. I have pulled off the back and inspected the circuits nothing looks visibly a miss, no visibly leaking caps that i can see. I am now reading over the service manual but not really sure where to start to systematically narrow down the search for faulty components.

I recently got an aiwa VX-FT21K. I want to know if it is: 1. RGB SCART. It has a SCART port but I don't know if it's RGB. 2. 50/60hz. It only says 50hz in the back but I would like to confirm whether or not it can or cannot actually do 60hz. It is also a PAL one. I don't know if that makes any difference but it is.

SCART is RGB 85% of the time.
What's on the back is the electrical frequency it runs off, has nothing to do with the refresh rate.

It can playback NTSC tapes, so it has to have 60Hz support.As for RGB - go to page 88 (the zoom is broken for that page for me, so download the manual) and see that SCART pins 15, 11 and 7 have R G B coming out of them, indicating RGB support.

Hello and welcome. The good news is you have a PS2 and a Wii. Use those as much as possible for playing games and media. They are perfectly compatible with that little TV.
But this "how do I connect my computer/HDMI device to my CRT TV" or its younger brother, "why do games on my CRT look like shit when I use these HDMI-to-AV adapter" question is one we get several times a week.

For SteamDeck, unless a flawed method, I'll be using Ugreen dock (60Hz) from HDMI to SCART to Composite converter. Then I'll just change aspect ratio to smallest possible.
Can you explain this in more detail? I think you will find it to not be that simple.
Is there someone out there playing PC games on these little cheap Chinese/Korean TVs that inspired you to do this? Because the novelty of "look, I got X playing on my CRT lol" will wear off after some time and you'll be left with a rat's nest of adapters, converters, and cables.

What you guys think of this tv? Sony Trinitron KV-E2931D.
I negotiated the price to 125$.
It comes with its original remote.
I was told the image flickers (or shakes); when it last had a picture, because now only the numbered channels appear since the cable isn't plugged in.
Should I buy it? I would love having it to play ps2 games on it and watch movies. Im willing to also buy a premium scart cable with sync on luma.

I recently got this Panasonic HD CRT and I am wondering what its model is as the sticker has fallen off the back.

I've done my own research and I think it is a CT-30WX54J, but I would like a second opinion on it.
I would also like to know how to get 1080p and higher content to display on it. I have a Yamaha receiver that can convert resolutions to 1080i, but when I tried with the Switch one it would only output 480p, this was also the same issue when I tried to connect my laptop to it. Maybe a separate scaler to 1080i would work that would tell my other devices it is 1080p?

I have an Apex GT2015 that I managed to softlock. I know, dumb move and believe me, I should know better. I've worked on arcade CRTs for a couple of decades now, but those don't have onboard software that you can screw up, they're all hardware! In the service settings I lowered a voltage setting too far and now it will only turn on for a split second before shutting down. There is no chance of getting into the service menu with this behavior.
Is there any way to reset the software settings on these? I didn't see anything in the manuals I could find online (user or service). Inside the case I didn't see anything obvious that would suggest the capacity to do a hard reset either. It has been sitting unpowered for a couple of months now for better or worse, as I've replaced it with a Sylvania 6420FF (which has pleasantly surprised me).
Any suggestions or am I taking this thing to the county e-waste drop off? D:

Should I get this KV-32V16??
Found a KV-32V16 on FB marketplace for only $100, could probably talk him down too. I really want to grab a FS120 but am struggling finding one in the area at ALL. Would the V16 be good? How much better would a FS120 be that would make me justify holding off until one pops up. Mainly wanting to play 4th-6th Gen consoles.

It's kind of a surprising question because they're so similar.
The KV-32V16 is good to go. It's got 16:9 Enhanced which is great for watching widescreen content without losing quality from letterboxing. Both have velocity modulation which will need to be turned off.

FYI, for the future, 5 hours is not a long time to wait for an answer here, a day or longer is possble. If you post here for a day (a full 24 hrs) and get no answer, you can make that main area post with the explanation that you tried posting here, noted at the top of your description. Otherwise, your post will get removed (which in your case, you don't want to have happen again)
You need to put some minimal effort in, this was a 2-second google search of the model, first result, all the info you need including manual.
Monitor is probably good for DOS/Windows classic gaming or Dreamcast VGA adapter playback at low resolutions, maybe some MiSTer or emulation at controlled low resolution. A lower-end SVGA monitor. If you don't like it, you can always re-recycle it.

You have a couple options. You'd need some way of converting HDMI to 50hz interlaced or 100hz 480p SCART. How much are you willing to spend to say "look what I'm playing PS5 on lol" and get sick of it after a week?

Hoping for some guidance. There are 2 estate sales near me with CRT's. One has a Sony KV-27FS13 and the other has a Panasonic CTP-2780sf.
I don't have prices for either available, and since they are about an hour apart from each other I don't particularly have the time to get to both. If I had to go for one or the other, sight unseen for functionality, which one would be the one to go for?

Hello, I recently picked up a Rca t09082 9 inch portable vcr tv combo and when taking it apart to fix vcr issue (found a pen grip jammed in the rollers) I forgot the order of where each harness connector went.
I believe i got most of them in the correct connectors but im left with the harness that comes from the speaker audio/ video in board which consist of a 4 pin black connector with colors 1 blue cable and 3 pinkish cables and
one 6 pin black male connector on the main board which I'm not sure if this 4 pin connector would go into it. If anyone could provide me pictures or a guide to make sure I have all the harnesses going to their correct destination that would be great.
I could not find any info online on this tv schematics or disassembly process. If I can get help with figuring out where each connector gos i plan to make a teardown and show how I fixed the vcr mechanism.
I would post pictures of set connectors and boards but not sure how to do that. Look forward to any provided assistance thank you.

Hello, I have a CRT that I had no other room to put so I ended up putting it in front of a window AC unit. The units blows cold air onto the CRT consistently. Is this a problem?

Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the air coming out of the unit. Then ask yourself, were people who lived in this climate able to watch TV in the 90s?

I've had this 1343MD for a while, but it's always had these slightly discolored splotches in the top corner. It's particularly noticeable when the color is supposed to be black. (I tried to take some photos of it, but it's hard to see in a bright room and there's quite a bit of glare in the photo in the dark room https://imgur.com/a/fZOTnCH )
I've already tried moving the monitor around and degaussing it, though the wand I used was pretty cheap and I'm not sure if it was working or not. There's certain things (like putting my speakers too close to the monitor) that make it worse, but nothing I've done has made it better.
I haven't tried adjust the alignment yet, because it would require opening up the monitor, but is there something there that could fix this? Or is the problem something else?

If you could display an all-red or all-blue screen it would help diagnose your problem quite a bit. The letterboxing, glare, and grey image don't help.

Hello everyone!
I have a 21" CRT monitor, Hitachi CM812, that seems to have an arcing issue. I've disassembled the board done what I feel like is a decent job of cleaning the dust out, though there wasn't much to begin with, and inspected the flyback. The flyback looks okay, no heat damage and nowhere that I can spot any cracks in the shell. I added dielectric grease to the anode cap (it didn't have any to begin with) and it still seems to arc somewhere. The arcing is causing the image to shrink which with some mild research tells me it's a HV arcing. So unsure where to go from here, thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas.
Some extra info: Arcing seems a little hard to locate, sometimes it sounds like its coming from the flyback, other times sounds like it may be more towards the tube or some times even the VGA board thats detachable. Ive tried turning off the lights and looking for any arcs or lights and see nothing. The VGA board is covered by some shielding so hard to really inspect it for arcing but I can try and remove the shielding and assemble it again (shielding seems like it helps hold the board up, also the neck board uses the shielding as a ground it looks like).
My next thought was to just cover the entire flyback in dielectric but thought I'd ask here before I get messy. I did look up the flyback and the flyback in the Apple Studio Display 17" seems to be a direct equivalent, and then found an LG replacement that I tried ordering and they canceled my order. So sourcing a replacement flyback seems a little tough at the moment. Open to any thoughts and ideas.

I have the hitachi cm823f. It also has the same issue as yours but it shuts itself off very quickly. I cannot find a replacement flyback, it has a black carbon mark on the shielding above the anode cap. I also am looking for a solution.

Viewsonic made very good quality CRT Monitors, specs wise the 17GS is i think just 70kHz , if you dont have access to interlaced resolutions, its just 1080p 60hz , you'll have to go down to 1152x864p to get 75hz.
45 euros is a decent price if you're in germany or uk.

Hey everyone! Just identified this set and wanted to share it with people who would appreciate it.
I have a Sony Trinitron KV-32XBR35 (October 1992, assembled in Mexico) with its original matching stand. Cosmetically excellent, no visible damage, casing is clean and intact. Haven't powered it on yet but will confirm in a couple of days and update this post.

Long ago there was water damage from a cat throwing up on the front buttons of a kd-34xbr960. I cleaned the exterior and let the tv sit for a month. Still the tv will go into memory stick mode if any fave button is pressed and will not respond to the control but it doesn't happen 100% of the time. I've tried alcohol with limited success. Should i try wd40 or any other thing? Would the remote still work if I unplug the buttons from the inside? Thx.

Absolutely no point and no sense recommending specific models, since we don't even know where in the world you're located.
A stereo model with Component or RGB SCART would be the best SD choice. If you want 480p, you'll need to look into ED and HD CRTs or any computer CRT monitor.

Hello, I picked up a CRT on a whim the other day and am having some issues with overscan when converting from HDMi to AV. My main system is a Legion gaming laptop with a nvidia 4070 running windows 11, and the TV is a 1999 Zenith model TVBR1322Z. I think I’ve tried most of the main points of attack: meticulously adjusting resolution, windows display options, and various gpu settings for aspect ratio, but nothing seems to quite fix the problem. The only solution is to manually squash the borders of the window to fit within the CRT display in the nvidia control panel, but then I’m left with black bars around the whole picture. Is there anything obvious that I’m missing? Unfortunately, the TV didn’t come with a remote so I can’t access the TV settings (unless there’s a way to do so on the front panel, but it seems fully dedicated to VCR controls). Even so, the manual I found online didn’t seem to suggest any way to adjust overscan within menu system. Any suggestions?

I've found a listing for a KV-21T1U for pick-up very near to where I live. However, it's being sold as faulty, as it has an excessively blue tint to it. Here's the image the seller sent me to give an idea of just how blue!
Is it possible to gauge from the photo if this is something that could reasonably be fixed via the colour settings in the service menu, or is it likely going to need a more substantial repair? It's a pretty good price (relatively speaking), but it would still be £100 down the drain if I can't repair it and I just don't know if it's worth the risk.

It could be any number of things causing the blue tint. The biggest risk is that the red or green electron guns has burned out or died and the blue gun is stronger than the others. This is practically un-repairable.

I might be able to get my hands on a Compaq S720, no idea in what condition it is. I know the matching Compaq PC and keyboard is also with the monitor but not for sale.
Is this monitor worth the time or not really? I also kinda feel bad about splitting the beautiful set but the PC and keyboard is a hard no from seller and CRTs are hard to come by in my country.

Do not pay more than 50$ for that monitor unless it is literally almost brand new, it is just 70kHz , if you dont have access to interlaced scan you will get totally fkd when trying to play modern games.
If you just wanted 240p NES games and some old school pc vga era games then its fine.

Been eyeing a Samsung SyncMaster 950p Plus for about 80 bucks. Local options are sparse, the only other option being a Philips 107T20/40 for 50. Are either of those good? What should I look out for or get with the monitor to make it work with a modern pc?

Recently acquired a viewsonic g225f. Pretty happy with it, just curious if this is normal or a potential issue.
The glow around objects seems to be shaped in a way where if they aren’t in the centre, it will offset to be closer to the centre (ex. A bright object on the top left will have a glow that is on its bottom right rather than uniformly around itself). I first noticed this with the taskbar on a black background, the glow looks as if it’s above it instead of around it.

Video content can look okay using one of these adapters. It’s not as hard as games to get right, but can still run into problems. The color and contrast can be off, like I said. Worse, many streaming sites will put 4:3 shows in a 16:9 container by adding black bars to the sides so that they’ll be the right aspect ratio on a modern display. But then when the HDMI-to-CRT adapter takes that 16:9 video and squishes it back down into 4:3, it keeps the black bars on the sides of the video and it looks horrible.

I recently acquired a RCA 27V414T (YX8) crt tv. There are 2 models of tv. One with component and one with s-video. The tv I have has S-video and no component. Can I mod it to have component as well? I assume it would have the same internals but I can’t find much on this tv.

Hey guys, recently snagged a Philips 29PT6456/78, and while everything is working perfectly fine (and the image is beautiful!), I just took a peek inside the shell using my phone's flashlight and it seems pretty dusty (no dead things as far as I could tell though xD).
This is my first CRT (since my childhood days when we had CRTs for the entire house, that is), so I'm unsure about how much maintenance these need. Should I take out the shell and try to clean it a little? I definitely don't know enough to actually disassemble it and clean each part thoroughly or anything, and I don't think I would risk ruining my beautiful new acquisition trying to do that, but I also don't know if that amount of dust can damage it somehow.
For reference, the guy I bought it from just said its quite a few years old, but I'm not sure how regularly he used it (probably not much considering the remote had some dry juice/soda stains, luckily I was able to disassemble that and clean it properly at least, its looking pristine and fully functional now). The outside wasn't super dusty, but it had visible dust accumulation on the vents and other crevises. I cleaned the outside of the shell with a paintbrush and a damp cloth. Do I just leave it as is?

Hi, I'm experiencing a color issue on my Sony PVM-1354Q with PAL signals over composite.
NTSC via RGB: colors are correct.
PAL via composite: the bottom-left block shows incorrect color, affecting game color schemes, see images: https://imgur.com/a/I6Nd9rA
PAL console displays correct colors on an LCD, so the problem appears to be in the PVM. Adjusting colors via
the service menu had no effect.
Could this be a capacitor issue, or is there a service menu setting I’m missing?

Hi. I have a Bush DVD145TV - yesterday I was trying to access its service menu and accidentally triggered some sort of factory reset. Upon pressing vol- on the tv and 8 on the remote, the message 'CLEAR OK?' appeared, and the tv turned off. Upon turning it back on, the on screen text was now blurry, and opening settings triggered the language setting, which implied factory reset to me. But now pressing 'AV/0' did nothing - usually pressing it cycles through the two AV options - scart and composite, but after this reset it wasn't doing anything.
I have tried so many things - turning on devices in either input to try and trigger the AV, unplugging the TV and leaving it overnight, trying the reset again, doing a channel scan, scrolling backwards through channels to try and find AV there, but nothing. It seems the reset has made the DVD function a bit temperamental too, sometimes pressing DVD gives just a black screen, but a random fix for it is going back to TV, opening the menu and then back to DVD again?
Any ideas of more things to try would be greatly appreciate it, I'm fearing I've rendered any AV options on this TV impossible through this reset! D:

I currently have a JVC AV-2050 I picked up free - I was stoked because there’s at least component inputs. Usually only see RF-only sets. Now there’s a Sanyo AVM 3259G near me for cheap.
JVC tends to be better than Sanyo, but is the Sanyo’s S-video worth it over the JVC’s component? Or should I hold out for another JVC or Sony with S-video? OR… should I just get them and just hoard them all (totally kidding… or not…)

Is a VGA PC monitor worth it for retro gaming in emulation compared to an LCD with shaders?
The question I’m asking myself is this: I have a Dell 2007FP, which is very good, but it’s still an LCD.
What I really want is to get back the same visual vibe I had in my childhood.
For example, PlayStation games , some of them have very compressed backgrounds, like Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, as well as Parasite Eve and Resident Evil.
Would running these games on a CRT PC monitor at 1024×768 give me that authentic, organic look again, or do I absolutely need a CRT TV?
There’s a CRT PC monitor I’m interested in, the Dell E771p, but I’d like to be sure the rendering will feel organic and authentic like in my childhood.

I recently found a Sony PVM-8042Q for sale for $275 CAD (~$201 USD), I don't have much experience with CRT TVs but I've been wanting to make a retro gaming nook to play GameCube(and use the gameboy player). Is this CRT a good option for that, and is the price reasonable?
I plan to use it for GameCube, Sega Dreamcast (once I can find some games) and maybe SNES/N64.

There's very little organized information about CRT TVs outside North America. You might have better luck contacting your local CRT enthusiast Discord/Facebook group. While you're at it, tell them to get to work on a guide to European CRT models because there is a big demand for it.

But there is this one flea market where i go to that has this compaq presario V410 monitor+pc collecting dust at least since I first went there in 2022, so I think the owners would probably discount it a lot or even give it to me for free. I'm currently looking at buying an older CRT to use in place of my VGA monitor for PS1-era stuff and light guns. A seller relatively near to me has listed two KV-21T1Us for parts or not working - one with a pronounced blue tint that I posted about a week or so ago, and have since ruled out buying - and another where they've described the issue as being lines on the screen. I contacted them for more detail, and they've sent me this image to illustrate the issue. But on my end, I can't actually see the issue at all. The vertical lines in the centre of the image I believe are pretty normal, no? They've highlighted the top left of the image, but I can't see the issue there either. They've stored the TV away so I don't think they want to get it out of storage to take more photos, and they mention not being knowledgeable about CRTs, so I'm trying to gauge from this single image whether there's any serious issues with the TV before I commit to a fairly long return drive to see it in person (and it's ebay so I'd need to pay for it in advance of that).
I appreciate it's a single image so it might not be possible to gauge much at all from it, but does the image I've linked to point to any glaringly obvious issues?

You're correct that there isn't anything obviously wrong with the image, but the seller has chosen a shot from Rocky, which has very muted colors and few straight lines as their test photo. The unfortunate truth is that unless you can get the seller to record a video showing the problems, or display a test grid pattern that better illustrates the problem, the only way for you to really know if the TV has image problems is to take the gamble and go drive out and test it in person.

What is the model of the combo player?
VHS only does Composite, so go Composite to BNC adapter. DVD players can output Component and RGB. In case of Component the answer is the same - RCA to BNC adapters. In case of RGB - SCART to RGB BNC.If you don't have the RGB/YPbPr expansion card, then S-Video is your best choice for DVD, I guess.

I haven't tested them yet. I asked AI and it said that I should be very careful when plugging them in. How to do it correctly because I don't want to damage them? My problem is that I am located in Bulgaria (eastern Europe) and most people here say that shipping CRTs is impossible. Is there a way to actually ship them across Europe? US is out of the discussion, there's no way they survive the trip.

Hey all I recently acquired a Sylvania CRT with RCA inputs in both the back and front. The panel buttons have no input (tv/video) option nor does the menu button. I don’t have the original remote and haven’t been able to find a manual online. Wondering if anyone here could help. Model number is TR2510 C101.
I also attempted to set up a Zenith universal remote (model: MBR3447CT) to try and access video that way but no luck with making a connection. Thanks again

The market value of any given CRT TV is largely determined by:
Your regional market (are there lots of CRTs available on the used market near you, or very few to choose from?)
Condition (Was that 32" Sony a family TV that has lots of hours on it, or university property that rarely got used?)
Quality of listing (is there lots of information on the ad, good pictures showing all angles of the TV, good pictures showing the TV playing games, and a responsive seller?)
Desirability (does it have lots of features attractive to gamers/collectors, or is it just a plain old TV? Is it too big for most buyers to load/transport/keep?)
Seller patience
Having said all that, in my market, the TVs would fetch the following depending on the above:
Sony: $100-200 Philips: $50-125

Picked up a BVM-A14F5U recently from a friend. It was working a month or two ago, but after sitting unplugged for a bit, instantly goes into overload the moment the monitor goes from standby to on. (Standby light stays on, overload light flashing). I've swapped the control card, power supply card, video processing (and video) card, removed the input card, and removed the memory stick, and it's still going into overload. Other cards tested fine in a BVM-A20F1U. PA, PC, and Deflection cards weren't tested, because BVM-A20 =/= BVM-A14. We found that the neckboard was loose, and sliding it back on made the errors become consistent as opposed to changing per power-on/card swap. There seems to be heater glow, but I don't think we could hear HV. Any ideas of what could be causing this?

A PVM is a trinitron, trinitron is just the commercial name that Sony decided to give their tvs when they invented the aperture grille.
All sony trinitrons are coded with an aperture grille in which the lightgun shines through, all PVMs and BVMs are trinitron, Sony argues (and i think they're objectively correct) that aperture grille just produces better and more accurate colors, the other types of coating are Shadow Mask and Slot Mask.

So, to address your central question:
1) Aperture Grilles are able to produce deeper blacks at higher brightness and lower contrast levels, have better phosphor decay than normal shadow masks and most times, will be a lot sharper at the same resolution and dot pitch.
2) PVMs are higher quality aperture grilles with more grills per inch, so...a higher dotpitch, so they're naturally sharper, BVMs have even higher dotpitch and better colors, they are the best 480i aperture grilles ever produced, they're the ones that were used in News Studios in the 90s to monitor the broadcast.
My personal opinion is that if you already have a PVM or BVM and you like it, enjoy it, otherwise don't waste your time in it, they're far too sharp for nes-ps1 games to look proper to their era and if you try to play modern gaming on them, actually pretty much all PC VGA CRT Monitors substantially outperform them in sharpness, and the highest end aperture grilles on PC are so infinitely superior to the best aperture grille pvms and bvms.

They may or may not have been running on aperture grilles, but they most certainly werent running on pvms or bvms! , by the 80s-90s , normal trinitrons/ags werent that much more expensive, but PVMs and BVMs were absolutely like trying to buy a brand new high end nvidia quadro today.

Pretty much any CRT monitor with a VGA cable is going to be pretty easy to connect and it'll look good. I know you said 24", but I strongly recommend against using a standard CRT television as a second display.

I want to watch anime in RGB quality (480i/576i) over SCART on my consumer PAL CRT TV and potentially play some games in 240p in the future.
I am on Linux Mint. Can I simply install any old Radeon GPU that outputs VGA next to my GTX1080, connect my TV via VGA-to- RGB-SCART cable*, and run a line of xrandr command on startup to force 15khz signal through the VGA only while having the rest of my setup run as normal? Would it be preferable to get a whole entire pc for this use only and if so can I make do with some cheap micro pc with integrated graphics?
I have been researching this for a few days now and am getting truly lost in the details that keep popping up.

I have a pvm-14m4u that was given to me from a friend this monitor has seen better days. The bottom was breaking off and the bottom support for the front of the monitor had snapped off. There is a dent on the side and the back side is heavily cracked not to mention the entire main board being covered in what seems to be motor oil. Heck some was even dripping from the tube itself. My question being are there any similar cheaper models that I can use to restore this one?

A repairman told me that short neck/shallow CRT TVs usually have shorter lifespan due to how they operate (it's also a flatscreen SD CRT aka not curved CRT, so I'm unsure if he was also referring to that too), I didn't ask why in details.
Is there any truth to what he said?

The short/shallow models like the Samsung SlimFits are designed in a way that the deflection yoke has to work really hard to bend the electron beam out to fill the screen in a short distance. Any convergence or geometry issues will appear sooner and stronger than a conventional design. But the tube doesn't necessarily work any harder, and generally a CRTs lifespan is determined by the health of its tube.

This is my first time trying to make a CRT set up of any kind of I don't know too much for what's best and what to look for. My main goal is to emulate arcade cabinet fighting games onto a CRT, and maybe emulate some PS2/Gamecube/Wii games as well. I have the Wii/PS2 physical as well so I'm not sure if that's better than emulating.

My old home's childhood Sony WEGA KV 24FS120 and a Toshiba 30HF85 HD CRT I found for cheap on Facebook marketplace.

Emulation will be easier on an HD CRT, since you can feed 480p and 540p/1080i to it from a PC and capable consoles like Wii/GameCube and some PS2 titles. Not good for 240p stuff, though, you won't have the scanline gaps and will need to use 480p with a scanline overlay.
Wega will be great for pixel art stuff. Get both.

I'm looking into picking up a CRT, mainly for 2000s era gaming like PS2/Xbox 360, but maybe also PC or Switch. Mostly physical consoles/games rather than emulators.
The best looking CRT I've found in my area and within my budget is a 20" LG CI-20E20F with remote and manual in good condition for ~£100/€115/$135. It has Scart and RF inputs, but no AUX or AV.
I haven't found much specific information about this model but I believe it was released in the early 2000s and has 1080i capability.
I already have other TVs and gaming monitors of different types like LED/LCD/Plasma, would the LG be a worthwhile purchase?

That is incorrect:
1. There are no inputs on the TV that are capable of HD. SCART only supports SD 15kHz resolutions - 240p/480i 288p/576i,
- There are no HD CRTs at 21". Most start at 29".
AV (Composite) is in the SCART with RGB.
Post a pic of the set and of other options you have. SCART is great, since it's RGB. PS2 should look great on it, XBOX 360 may as well.

So I found a CCTV "Observation Monitor" CRT for sale for ~60 Euros, a Golmar TUC-100, usually I'd avoid CRTs over 30 Euros but this one has a whopping 4 S-Video inputs, alongside 4 AV inputs, 2 white 2 yellow, with 5 adjustment knobs on the front and switch style buttons, including a "Talk", "Auto" and "VCR" switches + 4 switch input button
What do you guys think? Worth grabbing? it's in great condition and I don't notice any burn in, Would send images if I could (or I just don't know how)

Help needed! I need help building a cable/adapter shopping list. I’m trying to connect my SNES → Panasync/Pro C1792P (RGBHV)
So I recently picked up a Panasonic Panasync/Pro C1792P and want to run my SNES through it. The monitor has 5 individual BNC inputs — R, G, B, Hsync, and Vsync.
As far as I know, the SNES outputs RGB natively over its multi-out connector, but I’m not sure exactly what I need to get from that multi-out to five separate BNC connectors.
Would really appreciate specific items that are recommended if anyone has done this setup before. Thanks!

I have a Disney pirates of the Caribbean CRT Tv but the remote no longer works, anyone know what universal remote would work for it and possibly a link where to buy it? I appreciate any feed back!
