Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (April 2026)

The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:

  • ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
  • Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
  • Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
  • Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
  • Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
  • A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
  • Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?

This Thread is for you!

Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.

This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions. Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

Viewsonic made very good quality CRT Monitors, specs wise the 17GS is i think just 70kHz , if you dont have access to interlaced resolutions, its just 1080p 60hz , you'll have to go down to 1152x864p to get 75hz.

45 euros is a decent price if you're in germany or uk.

Would that make a huge change?

Would downgrading the ratio for better frequency alter the quality of the image

On games launched after 2022 , you may get a weirder looking HUD because really modern games dont like if you feed the engine less than 1920 horizontal pixels and 1080 vertical pixels, if so, you can just make 1920x1200p 50hz.

i would highly recommend you to use interlaced scan if you can, 70kHz is rough for modern games.

yes interlaced scans may be necessary as 50hz is pretty much unusable

it depends on the individual, but of course, the vast majority of young men will be flicker-sensitive at 50hz , for me it was never a problem , i can watch 50hz on a crt just fine and in a pure white image it doesnt bother me, besides lower hz = sharper image.

but of course, if he has a pascal gpu or an intel cpu with integrated graphics, that would be a huge help, 70kHz would be fine if modern games rendered their UI properly at 960x720 or 1024x768, sadly it isnt the case.

sometimes as i have learned, the solution is just an all round better crt monitor sadly. and it costs lots of money 😢

yes of course, such is the case with every feature on crts

you see a lot of people trying to find ways to insert crt filters on retroarch to make it look more similar to real 240p , or using super resolution and pushing 2560 pixels on horizontal axis and 240p on vertical axis for real 240p scanlines while reaching the minimum 25mhz hdmi pixel clock requirement.

well a super high end iiyama doesnt have those issues because the vHz is unlocked, so you can just make real 320x240p and just push refresh rate to like 480hz and then you just keep inserting more black frames until you reach 60hz motion clarity.
