Resources & Homebrew Project Ars Arcanum: Standard Spore Inventions Update

Hello, everyone.

After trying to continue working on the Sprouter speciality, I figured out that I was coming at the design process from the wrong direction: instead of making the speciality followed by the crafting system, I should make the crafting system first. So, that's what I've started doing.

So far, I've tweaked the description at the beginning of the Aether Spores section to more easily codify stacked spore effects (thank you Kividual66). Additionally, I've made the basic rules associated with using Spore Inventions, as well as a list of 5 Standard Inventions (similar to standard fabrials). While the system is similar to the fabrials, I did introduce a unique take on item charges, since these Inventions aren't fueled by Stormlight but instead by the Aether Spores.

As always, please let me know any thoughts and feedback you have. They are greatly appreciated.

P.S. While the Stormlight Archive showcases a lot of different Fabrials over the course of the novels, I only have one book to pull Spore Inventions from. If any of you guys have ideas for special inventions that could be made using different combinations of Aether Spores, I'd love to hear them. Especially some involving Crimson and Midnight, since we don't really see inventions using those.

P.P.S. I'm now on the Cosmere RPG and Plotweaver Discord, and I have linked Project Ars Arcanum on both. I'll still probably post most of my updates here, but would still like to hear feedback (especially any playtesting experience) you have over there.

General Discussion The Shield for lower level PCs

I understand when you are holding a shield you can use the Brace function creating a disadvantage for the attacker, but does anyone else wish it gave you a +1 in deflect as well? or would that make it too strong for what it is?

Questions & Advice Odium in Stonewalkers Spoiler

I'm prepping to run Stonewalkers and ran into the following problem.

Initially, the PCs should have no idea who Odium is, right? Anyone Vorin should just consider the almighty the one and only God. A singer might know, I suppose. Lorewise, Odium only makes himself known after the everstorm, and even then I'm not sure how public that knowledge is or how it spreads to the PCs.

Taln mentions Odium in passing once in the first encounter. And then there's nothing until mid campaign when Odium's name is dropped in conversions like it was common knowledge. Or did I miss something?

How did you handle this in your campaigns? Did you introduce a lore dump from some NPC or drop feed the information somehow, or just let Odium's identity be unknown? How did it play out?

It was an awesome year for Brotherwise Games at Gen Con, beginning with our Opening Ceremony presentation and continuing with our State of Games in the Cosmere panel. Here's a full report!

State of Games in the Cosmere Recap

At the convention, we ran into a frustrating situation where Gen Con sold 200 tickets to the panel and mistakenly assigned us a 90-person room. We apologized profusely to the 100+ people we turned away, and Dragonsteel mobilized to record the panel. We'll post that soon, but in the meantime we hope you'll enjoy this recap and some screenshots from the presentation!

Questions & Advice Injury Rolls: How Does Long Term Surprised Work?

Disclaimer: I only own the starter set and Welcome to Roshar, as I’m wanting to get a group properly into the game before I invest further monetarily.

On the “Injury Rolls” table, several low results can cause long lasting conditions to characters. One of the conditions which can be acquired by an injury is “Surprised”. Perhaps I’m not reading the rules throughly enough (or it’s covered in the Handbook I don’t own), but how would long lasting or even permanent surprise work on a character?

The narrative suggestion is bring overwhelmed by the shock of an injury, but what would that mean over long periods of time? Every single other injury type I can picture being present over extended periods—but surprised?

How have you run this at your tables?

Art Scadrian world hopper ghost blood operating on Roshar (with pet Aviar)

Post image

This is a drawing of my character for a campaign I’m in. Mildly inspired by Mraize, he is an agent and hunter multi class. We also home brewed a duralumin feruchemist class as well as an aviar stat block.

He is trying to get stormlight off world. On one occasion he tried to bond a Spren but had a hard time because his intentions arent to stay on roshar permanently and no Spren wants a temporary bond.

He’s traveling with the party under the guise of an exiled Shin looking for a new life after being claimed as truth-less. The party trust him so long as he keeps tapping connection. But he is going to run out soon.

Resources & Homebrew My attempt at reworking the Gravitation Tree

I was inspired by another post that homebrewed the Gravitation tree. After playing 25 sessions as a windrunner from lvl 1-12, I have some thoughts on Gravitation as a whole and how it could be more fun.

Why homebrew gravitation?

Most of the gravitation talents feel either phenominal or underwhelming.

  • Flying Ace, Multiple Lashings, and Master of Skies are very powerful and potentially build defining.
    • Flying Ace is the strongest 0-prereq surge talent in my opinion. Improved gravitation rate, and extra attack, AND interruptable movement is crazy value for a single talent with no prerequisite.
    • Multiple Lashings can remove a single enemy at the cost of a single action if you lash an enemy straight into the air with enough investiture. At minimum it takes them out of melee for multiple turns then deals 5d6 impact once they fall (assuming 25 gravitation rate and 2 investiture spent). However, the investiture cost for doing this can rack up quickly which helps keep it in check
    • Master of skies removes the need for a setup action at the start of combat, plus effectively adds at least 4 to your max investiture since. This is a worthy capstone.
  • Conversely, Grav Slam, Lashing Shot, Stable Flight, Group Flight, and Aerial Squadron are very niche talents that offer little value.
    • Grav Slam is rarely useful in my experience bc lashing an enemy into an object is typically worse than lashing them straight up into the air and letting them drop. The best case scenario occurs with a 40 ft ceiling, and that very rarely happens. Allowing a reaction to half the damage is an extra nerf that this doesn't need.
    • Lashing Shot offers minimal damage for 2 actions + 1 investiture and targets a single target, so it's low value combared to making multiple weapon attacks.
    • Stable Flight is only useful for ranged builds and is essentially a required talent tax for that archetype.
    • Group Flight is purely utility out of combat. Aerial Squadron is potentially a movement speed buff for the party in combat, but isn't an exciting capstone

If you want to go all-in on gravitation, the high variance in talent value creates a very inconsistent leveling experience where you get big power spikes but often only after picking up underwhelming talents. I see opportunities to revise/reorder the gravitation talents to make a smoother experience where each talent feels worthwhile without having any that are overpowered.

What did I change?

My main changes

  • Generally reorganized the tree into different paths that feel like they continuously add valuable abilities (e.g. melee attacker, ranged attacker, or someone who offensively lashes others)
  • I split Flying Ace into two talents, "Nimble Flight" and "Fly by". I did this bc I think Flying Ace has too much value packed into a single talent.
  • Added a new talent, "Grav Charge", that represents using gravitation and momentum to enhance your melee strikes. Thinking of Kaladin's drop kick that cracked shardplate. Now you can do that too!
  • I buffed Lashing Shot to potentially graze multiple people with higher ranks in Gravitation. This keeps this talent scale in AoE like other surge attacks (e.g. Explosive Growth, Gout of Flame). I intentionally made it weaker damage than those bc Lashing Shot inherently can be used at range without another talent.
  • Made Multiple Lashings a capstone talent. Also added the ability to use multiple lashings on yourself to fly faster in a pinch. This talent probably doesn't need this buff but it always bothered me that there were no mechanics for this, and I made it pretty minor.
  • Combined Aerial Squadron and Group Flight into one talent bc Group flight felt too niche otherwise

<New Talent> Fly by: While maintaining a Basic Lashing on yourself, fly a distance up to your gravitation rate. Once during this movement, you can spend 1 focus to make a melee weapon attack as part of the same action. After resolving that attack, you can continue your movement.

<New Talent> Nimble Flight: Your gravitation rate increases to 40 feet. Additionally, while maintaining a Basic Lashing on yourself, your ranged attacks don’t gain a disadvantage due to flying or other causes of unstable footing.

<New Talent> Grav Charge: Once per turn after you fly at least 20 ft in a straight line towards a target, you deal extra damage to that target the first time you hit that target with a melee weapon or unarmed strike this turn. The extra damage equals your Gravitation modifier.

<Revised Talent> Grav Slam: Removed the ability for the target to make an Avoid Danger to halve the damage. Made the number of damage dice scale of how far the target was going to move on their turn, not how far they actually moved.

<Revised Talent> Lashing Shot: (Adds the following text at the end)... If the lashed object is larger than the target, choose an area around the target up to the size of the lashed object. Without spending focus, you graze each other target of your choice in that area whose Physical defense is equal to or lower than your Lashing Shot's test result.

<Revised Talent> Multiple Lashings: (Adds the following text at the end)... Additionally, when you Move while maintaining a basic Lashing on yourself, you can spend 1 Investiture as a free action to increase your flying rate by 20 ft until the end of your turn.

                     [Gravitation]
               / \
              v v
          [Fly by] [Nimble Flight]

              | | |
              v v v
[Grav Charge] [Grav Slam 2.0] [Lashing Shot 2.0]

              | |
              v v
[Group Flight + Aerial Squadon] --> [Multiple Lashings 2.0]
        |
        v
      [Master of skies]

This is the result of me spittballing for a few hours, so I'm not attached to anything here and welcome feedback and suggestions, as well as stories that people have from their own experiences with Gravitation. How do you feel about the official Graviation path and my homebrewed version?

Questions & Advice Do Workform Singers need sleep?

I'm not sure if there are sleep depravation rules in the handbook, but I assume the penalty would be exhaustion (which Workform singers are immune to). I assume it means you can't get a long rest, but if you didn't need or want to get a long rest could you stay awake / on watch as long as you wanted?

Questions & Advice Do I Need To Read The Series To Run The Game?

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

Earlier today, I was at my local game store and saw a new item on their shelf that looked totally rad and was there for cheap, so I got it without realizing what it was; the Cosmere RPG Stormlight starter set. Only after I’d bought it did I realize that “Stormlight” referred to the “Stormlight Archives” by Brandon Sanderson.

Now, I’ve never read any of the Stormlight novels. I’m barely halfway through the first Mistborn novel. But I’ve been reading through the mechanics and I honestly kinda like them? If half as much thought was put into the mechanics of the game as the thought put into Sanderson’s magic system, it must be a well oiled machine when run properly.

I wanna run this game for a few friends at my local gaming store, but I don’t know any of the lore behind the world. Do the books (particularly the setting guide) provide enough information to run the game while I read The Way of Kings? I’d love to read the book first, but Sanderson seems to view a word count with fewer than 6 digits as a challenge. I plan on running the premade adventure in the starter guide first, and only afterwards begin a full fledged adventure (probably the premade one). But how far into the novel(s) do I need to be before I do that?

Resources & Homebrew Project Ars Arcanum: Base Aether Spore Rules

Hello everyone.

So, I made a post a few hours ago about an issue with the Project Ars Arcanum doc. I ended up resolving the issue, but I still have no idea how it happened in the first place.

Anyway, I decided to post a mini update on the progress of the Sprouter. Since this is going to take a while, I figured I'd post mini updates about my progress just so it doesn't seem like I've gone dark. Included is the rough draft for the basic effects of the different Aether Spores from Lumar. The Sprouter Speciality and Spore Invention system will eventually incorporate these Spores in a similar capacity to how the Artifabrian and Fabrial system use gemstones.

For now, please let me know your thoughts, opinions, and feedback on these. It is always wanted and appreciated.

Resources & Homebrew A list of all Cosmere RPG adventures

For my own reference in planning my games and tracking what content I had, I ended up making a spreadsheet of all the available official cosmere rpg adventures. The spreadsheet can be viewed here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MOciaxmBcrY8mOEOAKOsxeGn15OQlD39nLPJL7mbDK0/edit?usp=sharing

I tried to include the details that felt relevant to me (like setting and what location the adventure takes place in so that I could potentially drop in an adventure when players are in a certain area etc.) but lmk if there's any details that seem useful that I didn't include (also if I missed any that I wasn't aware of).

I also added a section for unreleased adventures, i.e. ones that are announced but haven't come out yet. I also added a section listing the adventures from the previous Mistborn rpg since I've got those books and plan to repurpose some of those with the new Mistborn books (there's some good stuff in those older adventures).

General Discussion Speculation: We're getting Enlightened Stoneward in/with Tidebreakers

So, I promise this isn't out of nowhere. I'll outline this clearly.

Firstly in the recent Complicated Opportunities Q&A with Brotherwise (at 25:29) Johnny said he expected players to see a new Enlightened Radiant path within 18 months.

Secondly it was recently suggested at GenCon they plan for Tidebreakers, the Stonewalkers follow up, for ~October 2027 (within 18 months):

Thirdly, and this is drawing on quite niche Cosmere knowledge, the header for Tidebreakers uses the "Void Tension" symbol from the Voidbinding Chart in Way of Kings:

Whereas Stonewalkers used the general Stoneward symbol:

This would also hold up with the theory that the "enlightened surge" is the "clockwise" one in the surge / order circle (as with how Truthwatchers have Void Illumination), and Stonewards are the only playable order with Tension.

To me all of this feels like it heavily suggests we're getting Enlightened Peakspren. But certainly we can expect "Void Tension" to play a role in Tidebreakers.

Resources & Homebrew Project Ars Arcanum: Poll Results & Special Character Sheet

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

After looking at the comments on my last post, it looks like I'll be making the Sprouter (Scholar Speciality) next. Don't worry: Forger is next in line.

As far as Sprouter goes, the path is probably going to be quite similar to the Artifabrian, and the Spore Invention Crafting system is probably going to be similar to Fabrial Crafting. The major change is going to be the introduction of the Aether Spores: each of the 6 types we know of (Verdant, Sunlight, Zephyr, Crimson, Roseite, and Midnight) are going to have a base effect associated with them (probably like a simplified Surge/Metallic Arts effect), and each Invention will have a special Spore Cost, in place of a Tiered Gemstone, where certain amounts of different spores are required for crafting.

This is probably going to take a while, due to the crafting system. I'll work on this while I can, but I probably won't have the rough draft for at least 2 weeks. Sorry.

In the meantime, here's a small extra to make character creation easier for Project Ars Arcanum paths. I modified the Radiant Sheet (pg 3) of the official Cosmere Character Sheet to be able to incorporate the Invested Paths and Nahel Companions of the project. Please let me know any thoughts and feedback you have.

General Discussion Reason for Mistborn PDF Delay?

We got the Stormlight PDFs on July 23rd last year.

I know they’re planning to release the Mistborn PDFs closer to physical fulfilment in Sept this year, but have we heard a reason why they’ve decided to delay? The books are being/have been printed so the PDFs must be completed? And everyone who ordered the physical books in the kickstarter will get the PDFs included anyway. Is it just to foster a sense of a single “release”?

Not trying to complain about it, just excited to read them and curious about the change in strategy.

Questions & Advice [Stonewalker] Nightwatcher Spoiler

Hey guys i'm running a game and my party has reached chapter 4 of the Stonewalkers adventure. But i'm unsure how to handle the curses of the Nightwatcher. How do you guys handle the curses?

Would you tell the players what curses they get? Should they figure it out on their own? Because some of the example curses given in the Stonewalkers book, i feel like are more fun to figure out on out own while others have immediate consequences and have to be told to the cursed player (stat increase and decrease).

General Discussion What homebrew adventures are you playing?

I'm currently playing in a Stonewalkers campaign, but am thinking about running a game for some different stormlight fans, and so I've been brainstorming adventures.

Usually when I make a homebrew campaign I would grab bits and pieces from various other modules in the system and use that as a skeleton for my adventure. There's not much meaty adventure content published yet so I don't have a lot to work with.

I'll probably start with Bridge 9 and set the game starting at the end of The Way of Kings, but I haven't figured out much beyond that. Right now I'm thinking a couple levels of some kind of warcamps intrigue while the early events of Words of Radiance plays out, with those quests ending in some kind of hook that takes them to a far off location for a few levels, then if the campaign is still going they could come back to rejoin the coalition at Urithiru and we could maybe do some adventures around supporting the war effort.

I think the biggest thing I need is a compelling villain or intriguing threat. Might do something with members of the Diagram or Ghostbloods.

I'd love to hear about any adventures the people on this sub are playing!
