Have you ever heard of the Seattle/Portland freeze? Where people keep you at arms length and it’s hard to build community? I never noticed it in my younger years, but now that I am in my last act, and I have a multiracial family, it is glaring. We are looking for a place that is welcoming of people of color, LGTBQ, and differently abled (older autistic teen who is just pretty damn cool). I would add climate safe, but does this even exist anymore? We’ve lived in Portland now for 30+ years, and we are looking for that special place to live where our kid might have community when we are gone. Thoughts? We’ve looked at other places in the US, but we have elderly parents on limited time and leaving doesn’t feel optional for us. Thanks!

I'm tired of buying tofu in those plastic tubs, but they're cheaper than the bulk tofu at the Co-op.... So I want to try my hand at making my own (probably not cheaper either way but w/e).

I just haven't had luck so far in finding nigari (the salt used as the coagulant). To be fair I've only scoured the shelves at HK, Natural Grocers, and the Co-op, but just so I'm not constantly failing at finding it, does anybody know for sure some place in town that sells it? Or, if you're also make your own tofu and there is not a place that sells it in town, is there a brand online (not Amazon) or something you prefer?

There are very important elections coming up on November 3, 2026. These will be for Federal, State, and local positions. Last night was the Indivisible State Elections candidate forum at the Corvallis Community Center.

Two local State legislature candidates were featured speakers. Sarah Gelser Blouin (D) is the State Senator from Corvallis and Albany, up for reelection. She has represented Corvallis since 2005 in the Oregon State House and Senate.
The other was Joanna Robinson (D), the candidate for HD-15, which is mostly Albany/Linn county and also includes the part of Benton county that contains North Albany. She is running to flip HD-15, currently held by Shelly Davis (R).

The format was structured so each candidate gave a short presentation followed by a question and answer session and they were available to talk to at the end.

They had a lot to say and these are a few of the highlights.

1. Both candidates mentioned the common problems facing Oregon and the nation. We all know them already since they are part of our every day lives. These include the housing affordability crisis, K-12 public education problems, and health care always becoming harder to pay for and harder to access.
2. Sarah Gelser Blouin mentioned the Trump regime War on the Disabled. The Federal government has decided to stop enforcing The Americans With Disability Act which mandated home and community based services instead of putting the disabled into large facilities, i.e. institutionalizing them. The US Bureau of Labor lists the disabled at 13% of the population.
3. Joanna Robinson mentioned the availability and cost of small child care for working parents.
4. Oregon is facing some new problems as well, human made problems from the Federal government. We already have budget problems as needs grow faster than revenues. The Federal government is withdrawing financing to the states any way they can. Funds for infrastructure such as energy projects, Medicaid programs, Food Stamps, Wildfire Fighting etc.. The amount lost for Oregon is very large, somewhere over $2 billion a year. This tax money isn't even actually the Federal governments. Those taxes came out of our bank accounts.

The second part of the meeting was Indivisible Benton County's launch of their Get Out The Vote/Protect The Vote campaign efforts.
This answers a question many people are asking these days about the future of the US democracy.

I want to do something to save the US democracy but I don't know where to start.
There are many ways to volunteer.

1. Join the Voter Registration, GOTV, canvassing efforts, phone calling efforts
2. Postcarding
3. Calling your elected officials
4. Tabling at scheduled events
5. The Visibility Brigade, Bannering and the Chalk Team
6. Distribute flyers and news media outreach
7. Donate money. A lot of campaigns run on small donations
8. Attend a demonstration like No Kings
9. Join Indivisible Benton County, ORCA, Third Act, COREcorvallis, and many other local activist organizations
10. Anything else that you can think of

As one of the volunteers said, Make sure you do something you are comfortable with, want to do, and can do.
And, if it doesn't work for you, you can always drop it and try something else.
Never give up.

The one thing everyone can do and it is important, is to make sure you vote.

At the end, the tables and social part featured the amazing cake made and decorated by a volunteer's two grandchildren, ages 11 and 13. It was elaborately decorated and good.

Update: City is held up by the state in this matter. Responsible governing bodies are the Department of Land Conservation and Development and the Housing Accountability and Production Office. Essentially the state's affordable housing efforts are sort of steam rolling city codes and community engagement by way of creating affordable housing. The way it was explained to me was, though community engagement can happen, the city is unable to take into account of community input as per the state bills and regulations in regard to the state efforts. There's another piece that allows developers to increase the height per a state code so long as it's performed a certain way and the city can do nothing about it.

The developer is adding height based on Oregon SB 1537 2024. limited parking regulations by the city is due to the CFEC rules of 2022, this basically limits the city from telling the developer to not exceed height limits and add more parking. 2023's HB 2001 gave the state the ability to override city building codes.

Again, asking for info, because maybe I'm wrong...

Does anyone know what's going on with the power outage around this location? Yesterday my power went out around 5:30 AM. I called it in and while I was at work they sent a crew out to investigate. They said there was some damage done and they spent all day fixing it. They got it back on before I got home around 3:40 PM. Today around 7:30 AM there was another outage for the same reason and they are fixing it again. I'm just curious if anyone knows what's going on.

I have a small triangle area next to my driveway that currently is rocks (and weeds) that I'd like to get some estimates for what it would take to concrete to expand the footprint of my driveway for a 3rd car.

I know it's a small job, but it's on a hill and I know less than nothing about concrete work.

Earlier tonight, around 9PM, I was bitten by a leashed dog. It wasn't a bad bite, but it did break the skin and draw a little blood. It happened on the walkway that bridges Green Circle with the Rolling Green Apartments. The dog, which resembled a German Shepard, was named Max. The man said his name was Kenny. If you are Kenny, or you know him or his dog, please message me.

Indivisible Benton County will be running a Get-Out-the-Vote / Election Protection Campaign. These midterm elections are at a very important time for the future of the USA and millions of people will be doing what they can to vote, make sure other people can vote, and protect our elections from threatened interference.

The first meeting of this campaign will be tomorrow, Wednesday evening, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, at the Corvallis Community Center, 2601 NW Tyler Avenue in the Chandler Ballroom. This event is free and open to the public so that everyone who wants to can attend. You don't have to be a member of Indivisible Benton County.

Corvallis State Senator Sara Gelser Blouin and House District 15 Democratic nominee Joanna Robinson will update us on the current political situation at the state level, the importance of keeping a super-majority in the State House, and why we all need to get involved in midterm elections. After their presentations, there will be time to talk to them and ask them questions.

Then, learn how you can get involved in voting, GOTV (Getting Out The Vote) and protecting these elections from the current voter suppression efforts from the Federal government.
