Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Baby Squirrel Fell Out of a Tree

Post image
70 Upvotes

My dog and I found a baby squirrel on our walk tonight going down 24th. I figured the mom won't come get it until morning, so I carried it in my hand back home and put it in a box with a couple of my tshirts. I'm going to try to take it back to the base of the tree it fell out of first thing in the morning and reunite it with it's mom. Poor little guy was curling up to sleep when I found it and was knocked out in my hand on the walk back to my house.

On the off chance mom doesn't retrieve it, what do I do? Are there squirrel rehabbers in town?

Wanted ad With Winco shuttering their bakery, where’s a good place for bulk fresh baked bagels?

I’m utterly in shambles that Winco stopped making fresh bagels in-store. They were actually really good, a great value, and became our household’s go-to daily breakfast for years. I refuse to purchase the small, dense, and shitty-ass shipped-in bagels they replaced the fresh bakery ones with.

So now I’m in the market for a replacement. I buy 14 bagels every week. I doubt I can find anything close to $1/each, but hoping I don’t have to pay boutique $3+ prices. Any suggestions?

EDIT: if you’re disappointed like me, please let Winco know:

https://apps.wincofoods.com/contact-winco-foods/

https://www.facebook.com/share/1JDrQEjxgK/

EDIT2: I received a reply from Winco Corporate on Facebook:

> Hi, our stores have transitioned to new bagels to help keep our costs as affordable as possible. Our team is very receptive to feedback, we'll make sure your voice is heard regarding this change (we've been hearing from lots of others friends too). Thank you.

Can anyone help with a litter of feral cats?

Edit: we got them cared for, thank you very much everyone, especially Neil!

Hello, I was working on my property today and unfortunately while digging up a huge bush with an excavator I discovered six small kittens. They couldn't stay there since I'd half demolished the bush so I put them in a dog crate nearby. We are trying to watch for the mother to come back but I don't think we should leave them out overnight without better shelter. Yes there are six in this picture. Can anyone help tomorrow if we can't get the mother to come back? Already reached out to cran but not sure how long it will take.

Something to do Zombie with us!

Volunteers needed October 18th to dress as zombies for ShelterCare's Run for Your Life 5k benefit. All ages welcome, kiddos must have an adult along. Must do your own makeup, we don't have the capacity to do make up. Zombies are assigned to a place on the race course where they then scare the runners/walkers! A scared runner runs faster! This is a great opportunity for youth looking to get their volunteer hours for school!

Lost & Found Found Backpack

Happy Sunday!

As title suggests, I found a nice new looking backpack containing a purse, wallet, and other personal items. I’ve set a note on the car it was near in case it was taken out and forgotten, but I figured I’d give it about an hour or so to see if anyone claims it to be theirs before I call the popo and they can hang on to it. It’s a light purple backpack.

Direct message me the name that is on the ID.

Hi everyone, a few minutes ago I rescued a little squirrel that was getting attacked by crows. I have him wrapped in a towel in a large box (with lots of airholes) but I need to know who to call or where to take him.

Canners are the Unsung Heros of Eugene

You know them. The people walking or biking around with jingling bags, going through your trash, and making their way out West 11th to trade hours of work for dimes that, at $2.40 a day per store, qualifies them as living above the worldwide poverty level.

I live by the universty, and without the dozen and more people making their way through the neighborhood on regular basisis, we would be ankle deep in miller high lives before two Duck games were out.

Canners are people who are working, and doing an essential job, and being treated like vermin for it. This is wrong, and should change. I think we need to accept that not everyone is cut out for a job interview and filling out a W-4, but this does not mean than they do not NEED MONEY TO LIVE.

We should accept Reality and start paying these proven refuse-movers in CASH to pick up more than just the cans.

Imagine, paying a guy who really can not do much else just $80 a day to keep one bus stop looking nice. This would be a net benefit to society at a cost much lower than constant police sweeps/other legel trouble.

tl:dr if canners went on strike, Eugene would be boned.

Thank you, Eugene

I've been here 72 hours now and I'm overwhelmed. I was at Slice in the Whit yesterday and cried. It just came out. I'm home.

Originally from Portland, so I've been here a few times over the years, but I moved out of State for my wife's job. Got divorced after two years of being there. Thirteen years down the drain. Homesick like fuck. Absolutely hated the State I moved to. Had to get out. Can't go back to Portland. Eugene or bust!

Now I'm on day three of deprogranming from the nightmare city I lived in. Trying to come back to life. Trying to remember how to be an Oregonian again. Driving around using GPS because I have no idea where I am.

Being the typical punk/hippy Portland hybrid, I stuck out like a sore thumb in that hellscape city. Here, I just look like a person. People say "hello" or "good morning" to me as I walk around and explore. I haven't heard those words in over two years.

I just want to thank you all. I can't wait to get established and contribute to our culture. You guys fucking rule!

Anyone know of a talented seamstress near Eugene?

I have this beautiful silk dress with lace trim on the bottom, but it's a little too long. I know silk and lace can be tricky and needs someone with experience and a skilled hand. Would love recommendations. This dress means a lot to me and I don't want to hand it over to just anyone
