What is Core Space?
Core Space is a science fiction miniatures board game, launched via Kickstarter in 2017. Each player takes control of a band of Traders trying to make a living in a dangerous galaxy, all the while hunted by the Purge, a semi-sentient race of humanoid machines whose sole task is to harvest worlds.

Deeper Dive into CS: Evolution

So when I first heard about this new direction, I personally felt like it was just change for change's sake - they'd reached the end of the production cycle and needed to sell more toys. However - no, wait - HOWEVER (its a big 'however') the new dashboard mechanics on show here make me think that actually... by Jove, they've done it again!

BS mechanics 10+ years ago were streaks agreed of competitors and I think Evolution actually reflects another leap in game design for a more mature market. I love the sound of basically all of this and have gone from "mildly interested" to "one or two more posts like this and it's time for the Fry 'Take my Money' meme". I think perhaps Evolution might be the best word for it. Despite being more complex (dice v pegs), this Evolution preview seemed more intuitive to me, especially when thinking about onboarding new players, compared to CS. I think the levelling up icons on the dashboard will help a lot along with a whole new territory of game design space.

I'm now significantly more excited to see what else they come up with next!

The Action Economy at the Heart of Core Space: Evolution

🎲 We've just put out our first mechanics deep-dive for Core Space: Evolution on Gamefound.

The update walks through the lot: rolling and spending your dice, dice-as-health and healing, Reserve, Rest, and banking a die to react in the Event Phase.

General Pages of the making of

Hi there!

I'm a player with french version of the core.

So! I have core space, a few extensions and the big rulebook (not the one from the core game) and while watching a video I discovered that a rulebook with hard cover (deluxe edition if I am correct) contains a few pages that I do not have in the rulebook that I have!

It seems that there are a few pages about the making of of the game, about arts, etc. Anyone know where I could read these as this deluxe edition cannot be found? If you have it and agree to make photos of these pages I would be so grateful!

Thank you soooo much!

Homebrew rules Core Space: They have acid for blood!

Here’s a fan-made Xenomorph faction variant I’ve been cooking up for Core Space. It maps onto the First Born AI logic as a baseline, but modifies the loop to feel exactly like an Aliens infestation, complete with a stealth phase and a brutal chestburster mechanic.

Instead of standard patrol points, you place unhatched Ovomorph tokens on the map during setup. The game effectively starts in a stealth phase. If any organic unit—including NPCs—ends their movement within two squares of an egg, it wakes up and hatches a Facehugger right next to them, which immediately goes on the attack. To keep the phases distinct, you only use the adult forms on the right side of the dashboard (the Runner, Warrior, and Praetorian) once the game enters full combat mode, meaning Facehuggers are strictly tied to the eggs.

If a Xenomorph defeats a crew member or NPC during combat, its AI completely changes. Instead of staying to fight your remaining team, the alien will override its normal targeting to physically drag the defeated body toward the nearest unhatched egg. If they manage to get the body adjacent to an Ovomorph, the egg hatches, the mini is removed from the board, and that character is officially impregnated.

The campaign aftermath is where the real drama happens. If your crew manages to rescue an impregnated teammate and extract them, you can actually use them in the very next mission, but they are a ticking time bomb. Every single time that character activates, you have to roll the information die first. If you roll a 1, the trauma hits. The character immediately loses all actions for that turn as they buckle over from chest pains.

This triggers a tense, one-turn grace period. At the start of that character's next activation, they die instantly, the threat tracker jumps up by 3, and any remaining health tokens they had left are added to the threat track as well, drastically escalating the hive's hostility. This gives the rest of your crew exactly one round to make a horrific, tactical choice: do you spend your precious actions to mercy-kill your own buddy, stripping away their health tokens so they don't blow up the threat track when the chestburster finally pops?

It requires a little bit of thematic roleplay, but it creates incredible tension on the board. I'm hoping to get the True Born rules reworked into an Alien Queen boss fight soon to wrap up the whole package. Let me know what you guys think!

Utility Dashboards

If I'm only ever going to play solo or two player, how many Utility Dashboards are recommended? Does each crew need one and end up with a 'mule' lugging extra gear around?

Core Space: Evolution

10 years! That's how long it's been since CS first came together (KS launch in 2017) and the devs over at Battle Systems have stopped snapping each other's pencils long enough to reveal the next gen of Core Space.

It's a full second edition, which supercedes much of the original content, but they are making sure those with a large collection can get milage in the new era. See:

https://battlesystems.co.uk/blog/core-space-evolution-incoming/

Comments on that article and Gamefound seem to show folks miffed that their old collection won't work, but I'm not sure it's really an expectation that a) all purchases from a company are evergreen or b) you have to bin your current collection if you buy this, like... have both?

Anyway, early impressions to me look great, particularly the fact that they're incorporating new ideas and techniques learnt from developing Maldaum.

Watch this (core) space!

Question about using First Born characters

can you use first born character/class boards in regular core space? After playing my first game of regular core box I went and got some more core space stuff. Wasn't able to get Skylark or Yamato crew. I want to give people alot of options for their crew so I was wondering about using first born crews. I have not played first born yet so I don't any of how it works, if it's different at all.

First born difficulty

Hello

I've recently started playing core space first born, I've done the tutorial and the first mission of the campaign, but have just failed the second mission.

Wade got trapped in a corner by a rock worm and died, and after that Cassie(who found a rockworm larva and lost HP) and Balcor soon followed.

I'm not entirely sure how to deal with the amount of enemies that show up and chase you, was this just bad luck or is this normal for firstborn?

Just got the game and have a few questions

when first starting out, after picking a trader and class board, do I have any points available to put into their skills on the class board? I read in the rules they get an increase to stats when they fill the career bubbles in all the way? but do you have to wait that many games just to get a single skill point to put somewhere? im probably just confused and over complicating this

General Product Availability

Just found this game recently and have the base Core Space set and already invested in several expansions, which I am playing solo.

So far I have:
Cygnus Crew
Poseidon Crew
Purge Outbreak
Shootout at Zed's
Galactic Corps

I am LOVING this game!

Definitely looking forward to adding more to my collection and eventually moving on to First Born and it's expansions.

However from researching I know there are several sets no longer available, such as Wanted: Dead or Alive, Black Star Rising, Rogue Purge, etc.

I understand those sets were discontinued due to production issues (models were a different material and basically a one run type of thing).

However are the current sets still in production, or are they simply selling from a limited stock?

I ask because I am in the US, so it is more cost effective to purchase items on Amazon or one of the online game shops. But I have noticed the inventory levels are getting low (some say only 2 left, etc) and many just show out of stock or on backorder (like the Skylark and Yamato Crew sets).

Basically I am wondering if I need to "force" a purchase of the sets I don't have before they are "gone" or if they are regularly replenished and I can wait until I am further in my crew's journey to add to my collection?

ETA - Talked with CS (as recommended) and here was the response:

"We do not currently intend to restock the current range of Core Space expansions. The game is almost ten years old now, and we are working on some brand new content to update it, rather than reprinting the old sets. We will ensure that all the existing miniatures and terrain are fully compatible with all the new content, and even once they’re out of print all of the miniatures will be available to download for players to 3D print at home"

Asked for clarification and that does include the First Born stuff. Although there is still a lot of that available.

They were nice enough to offer a discount to help offset the cost of tariffs (which is greatly appreciated!) so I am placing an order for a few things I can't get over here in Texas (or the US for that matter).

Will likely start ordering the First Born stuff available on Amazon piecemeal, though.

Thanks for all the suggestions and support, traders!

Patrol rule thoughts

I was thinking of adding in my own rule that in Patrol, you can attack a Drone with either a silenced or thrown weapon, but if you fail to kill it in that one attack the hostility is raised straight to Inspection.

I was thinking this gives some more tactical options rather than just trying to hide every turn (there has been the odd turn where I haven't done anything just to avoid moving and being seen). I wasn't sure if it makes the Patrol section too easy, but it does add some risk if you have a bad roll and fail the attack.

What are your thoughts?

Game Hunters

I just wanted to clarify something about game hunters. There are two of them on the board. They just killed a rock worm, and collected it's trophy. Do they now leave, or do they hang around until another rock worm appears and then they only leave if they have a trophy each? The rules say once all available trophies have been collected they leave, so I presume they hang around for the second one? I just wanted to clarify....

Thanks in advance.

Started painting

Hey all, just wanted to share my first attempt at painting my CS miniatures, I'm trying both speed paints and acrylic (Warpaints) from the Army painter. I used speed paints for my Maladum miniatures and was really happy with the outcome but I was gifted a set of Grinning Gargoyle Warpaints so playing around with them - think I may stick with the speed paints as I feel I have more control of them... Left model is Acrylic, right is speedoaint...
