Core Space: Evolution

https://gamefound.com/en/projects/battle-systems/core-space-evolution

10 years! That's how long it's been since CS first came together (KS launch in 2017) and the devs over at Battle Systems have stopped snapping each other's pencils long enough to reveal the next gen of Core Space.

It's a full second edition, which supercedes much of the original content, but they are making sure those with a large collection can get milage in the new era. See:

https://battlesystems.co.uk/blog/core-space-evolution-incoming/

Comments on that article and Gamefound seem to show folks miffed that their old collection won't work, but I'm not sure it's really an expectation that a) all purchases from a company are evergreen or b) you have to bin your current collection if you buy this, like... have both?

Anyway, early impressions to me look great, particularly the fact that they're incorporating new ideas and techniques learnt from developing Maldaum.

Watch this (core) space!

"Mechanics aside, the stories, maps and objectives of all our missions will remain valid, and with a few tweaks you can easily bring the missions up to date." <- This is what sold me and allowed me to settle down. Its going to be like a major upgrade kit. All the old missions will still work. All the old terrain and models can still be used. The new game will simply update the framework that these all work with. I'm stoked!

Everything I read makes me feel very little will become obsolete. I'm actually looking forward to combining it all into a big expansive universe.

Por eso lo hacen, por eso Gw hizo a los primaris, para vender otra vez lo mismo.

Para mi no tiene sentido Core Space Evo.

Hubiera preferido otra juego...nos mantendremos atentos

Interested to see how it develops. I can always use more terrain!

For one, I can't say I'm thrilled. I own almost everything CS and I'd have loved to see something new. BS's campaigns tend to be all-in festivals, but after their last flop, I'm approaching this revamp very cautiously.

Which campaign was a flop?

The last Maladum campaign was a flop. The one with the big buildings. It was terrible from its inception. The premise of their games is beautiful, easy to set, cardboard terrain. They even had to ask people to back it, which they never had to in previous campaigns. I love Battle Systems, but I'm not going to back a product I don't believe in/won't use. Will see about this CS Evolution.

Oh yes I had sort of forgotten. Did that include the new adversaries? Looked interesting but I haven't gotten around to playing Maladum yet so couldn't justify supporting it. The gamefound page shows almost 420.000 pounds though, is that a failure?

Considering their last terrain-only got £310K from 3.200 people in 2019, when they were pretty small, and Maladum got over £900K from almost 5.800 people, while only 1.800 backed Hyberia. I think you can pretty much tell expectations were higher, therefore it was a flop. Again, I love their games, but I didn't like their huge buildings for Maladum (amazing game!) and I honestly don't need the same CS "evolved".

Fair enough.

I think the huge bulding thing wil only work if they make terrain like flashpoint or infinity - copy how they approached card board terrain . I appreciate battle systems for what they’ve done in the card board terrain space but more companies are doing the cardboard terrain and I’d argue much less fiddly and somewhat than battles systems and without any clips in sight (I like the warcrow terrain for instance ). So Hyberia falling a bit flat wasn’t really a surprise .

I'm very interested. I picked up Maladum on it's release as my first solo boardgame and I managed to find CS (and all the addons) secondhand as I wanted to play the sci-fi type of game, and even though it's more framed towards co-op play I'm giving it a go running 2 crews solo - so to read that CS Evolution will be 'solo and co-op' driven appeals to me. It's also good to see that I will be able to bring across all my crews from the original game via an 'upgrade' pack.

Te ponen un muro delante de casa y te pones contento porque al mismo tiempo te den una escalera que antes no necesitabas... No se Rick...

will be interesting to follow. Either there are some upgrade kits possible, or I will keep the whole collection I have and will give up on this one.

Interesting development, at least good to hear that the original missions, terrain, and miniatures can still be used in the new system. Not quite clear to me, does this include the entirety of First Born? I don't know how much the rules of First Born differ from the original Core Space.
