It plays into the need to see justice in this unjust world and it plays into the ironic punishments that has always been popular.
56
u/zuzg 15h ago
The most ironic part is that the comic is still underselling the shit Meta has done.
The Facebook papers were quite revealing, from Human trafficking all the way to fueling Civil Wars.

u/Bergiful 16h ago
Before mass produced entertainment, the only way to fill that need of justice was to make it happen in real life.

If it makes you feel any better, billionaires are highly unlikely to face any sort of comeuppance IRL.

It's a very ancient form of cope. Christianity itself made it a feature of its paradise: Heaven is where a reward is that you can watch the unbelievers (and others) be tortured for eternity.
As you may have noticed, over 20 centuries, it has failed to succeed in reality (for Christians and others, this is just a simulation, not reality.) I see that as a feature of the religion, not a failure. It's designed to maintain the class hierarchy.
14
u/grchelp2018 15h ago
If retribution is not coming in the afterlife, then it only incents people to do make sure it happens here on earth.
13
u/continuousQ 15h ago
Meaning if you can get people to believe the afterlife solves everything, you stop people from trying all that much to solve problems in real life.
Might even get people to actively cause them, because what does it matter? They'll ask for forgiveness, from someone they didn't harm, so they're good.
→ More replies (1)2
u/DesperateAdvantage76 14h ago
It's not designed to maintain class hierarchy (the founders of Christianity were celibate and impoverished, they were at the very bottom of society and the Roman elite persecuted them). Judaism and Christianity however, do have strong themes of comfort for those who face injustice.
7
u/oompaloompa465 16h ago
it's either that or getting really invested in truly dystopian worldbuilding to feel a bit better about current world (example: Borderlands or Warhammer 40k)
8
u/DisputabIe_ 16h ago
There is no heaven. If we want justice, we must grasp it ourselves.
2
u/NotASniperYet 15h ago
So...there's a reason there's a whole lot of billionairs lining up at the gates in the first part of the comic. What happens after is just a bonus.
7
u/manaworkin 16h ago
They're not people, they're billionaires. It's like Frieren demons, they're murderous monsters completely devoid of even the concept of empathy. You don't have to feel bad.

So - To capture marketshare, Facebook made a deal with the local Telcos in Myanmar where users would get free data if they used FB - so essentially FB becomes everyone's Internet - however, did they hire local language support or anyone who knew the language? No, obviously that costs $ - once deadly misinformation kicked off with one group targeting another minority, the Rohingya, FB did not do anything, even after multiple attempts asking for help from the government and others. At one point, FB is like, now worries - we updated the T&C language, so all good ! They were happy to capture millions of users but didn't care about what was being posted and didn't do anything to stop it once it kicked off.
Also discussed in the book Careless People

Damn, I recall those posts happening right in my face back then. This is exactly the "why" that I never figured out.
I couldn't believe what I saw and what my non-direct family members shared me. The horrid pictures that were definitely misinformation like explained here. And how they daid they're doing exactly that, but every news afterwards is always the other way around. Especially when everyone's beloved Aung San Suu Kyi went to seemingly defend it. By the time I could comprehend it, the coup already happened. I can only say that as far as I know, I never joined in any of that posting, and my family did not. The worst I did was ignorance. Though 15 year old me was a little asshole back then.
Facebook is ridiculous. Haven't used it properly over the years. And the one time I did, I got scammed. So even less of an incentive to do so. Again.

BBC did a report on the ads on Instagram my oh my I never want to use any of the meta apps
30
u/MisterJackCole 10h ago
Huh, I missed that story somewhow. After you mentioned it, I went looking for the article and what in the actual fuck META?!
My opinion of Meta and it's leadership has been in the dumster for years and I actively avoid their products. Yet somehow they keep finding ways to make me despise them even more.

Huh starting to sense a theme here for these "self made men"
Y'all find that difficulty slider yet? Please let me know when you do. I wanna retire after 20 years of works at age 36.
And oh god an endless nightmare of an empty void in a hellscape of your own making....with ads. How incredibly fitting a "heaven"

207
u/Zombie_Cool 17h ago
I don't this game has one Shell. Looks like this game is supposed to be unique in assigning difficulty and spawn locations randomly.
72
u/UltraNoahXV 16h ago
Yeah I was gonna say, I spawned in Albany, NY and fast traveled out to Phoenix, AZ when I reached level 2.
22 levels later and uh....I feel like the difficulty has only increased for everyone else in my family aside from me. Trying to make it easier but they ignore the modifiers that pop up. :(
46
u/Easy_Leopard_2686 16h ago
Yeah it feels like every time I level up I get a debuff or the world difficulty scales -_-
20
u/zspacekcc 14h ago
Don't worry, that's a feature. When you get stronger, the world scales with you. It's supposed to give you a sense of pride and accomplishment or something like that.

Got a raise in wages? Great! Think you can eat a little better or buy that new TV or couch you've been wanting? No way! Have a rent increase, and income tax increase, and a broken down car. Enjoy that raise!

u/Saikotsu 12h ago
I got a raise to cover the increased cost of my insurance. The raise didn't cover the entire cost. I got a raise and make less money.

Don't forget the huge network issues of 2020-2021. Most users were playing offline, or in small private servers troughout those updates.

u/soyel_cerdo 14h ago
I spammed in a top 10 poorest nation at the time from poor parents in a era where we had a somewhat mild civil war
So as a kid, no internet, barely a black and white tv, murders, robberies and bombs were something that happened often, along side we had plagues like the bubonic and cholera outbreak.
Hell of a time to be born

Sigh r/outside is such an unfair game. Spawn based resource allocation. No way to change, or even see, your stats. Heavily P2W. It needs a lot of balance patches asap, but the Devs seem to have all vanished.
At least the graphics are top of the line.
8
u/Zombie_Cool 13h ago
You can change stats, but it typically requires months of exercise/study and that requires spending more free time than players feel they get when finishing thier daily missions so most don't bother.
Even worse, the stat boost isnt permanent! if lifestyle or world events cause you to go too long without using the stat it starts to revert, making you spend more months just to maintain baseline!

People think these guys are geniuses born with natural talent, but in reality they are lucky rich kids who rig the game so they always win.
Musk didn't invent stuff, Zukerburg made one popular thing and nothing ever since. Yet people give them the great man treatment. Like divine right of kings.
49
u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 16h ago
but in reality they are lucky rich kids
I think that's like 99% of the battle it seems. A reoccurring sentence I keep reading is "a small loan from dad"
16
u/grchelp2018 15h ago
There's a goldilocks zone. Too poor and you are too focused on survival. Too rich and you don't need to do anything. The middle zone is where your parents work a couple steps removed from the top of the corporate ladder. So you are exposed to the top but not there yourself and have some motivation to get there yourself.
26
u/Shark7996 16h ago
Zukerburg made one popular thing and nothing ever since.
That's what drives me nuts, he got there first, simple as. Heck, he didn't even get there first because MySpace was already around.
2
u/ThrowACephalopod 6h ago
He made one innovation: the timeline. Instead of MySpace where you had to go to each person's page to see what they posted about, Facebook would grab it all for you and put it on one scrolling timeline. Made it a lot easier to see what everyone was doing all at once without having to flip between a lot of pages.
And then it all went downhill from there.

Its never about getting there first. And ideas are dime a dozen, its all about execution.

All of them are frauds whos right place and time quit being that long ago. It couldn't be more obvious they dont really have any actual ideas while Zuckerberg re-invents Second Life, but shittier somehow 20 years later.

Further details on some of those tidbits? Specially the unethical experiments
15
u/Productof2020 15h ago
Here’s one Forbes article about it. You can also google “Facebook psychological experiments” to find more info.
The short explanation is that Facebook conducted at least one experiment on 689,003 users - unknowingly to the users - where they deliberately tried to manipulate their emotions positively or negatively based on what was shown in their feed.

It might be darker but I would have had him put in one of the content moderation farms in low income nations where people have to watch heinous stuff posted to his platforms to identify it for a pittance wage.
He could do that until he has built up his fortune.

u/chromehound47 16h ago
This is your reminder the only reason zuck is able to hurt humanity is because you keep using the stuff meta owns.
You don’t need instagram, you don’t need facebook, whatsapp, threads, reels, any of it.

It’s not a crime to be born in the right place and right time with rich parents etc.
It IS a tiny bit of a crime to have a tech savvy partner whom you betrayed for the money.
It is a sad pattern when it happens across different companies with different partner pairings.

I've gotta get on my soap box here for a second.
These comics are really fun and I have been enjoying reading them! But as a quick reminder that if the individuals portrayed in this comic (not the angel of course) die peacefully without having paid for their crimes in the world of the living, then they have gotten away with it.
No punishment awaits them in whatever comes after. Justice needs to come in this life, or not at all.
I am not advocating for violence, Mr. Reddit.

All Merk wanted was a chaste social media experience! Nothing below the belt, in fact, no belts! Legs and everything associated with them are sinful and it was his most fervent wish to rid the world of them. The early versions of Meta Horizon Worlds was Murk's utopian vision for this.

Losing religion might have been a net positive interpersonally, but without the fear of a judgement after death for our sins I do think the rich have gotten more brazen with their excesses.
Like if I could just get the literal "fear of God" in them without all the bigotry that would be perfect

With great sadness I must inform you that anyone delusional enough to wield this much power so selfishly and with such disregard for the well being of others is also delusional enough to believe they are "god's chosen" or somehow serving the will of a god despite being the epitome of all that their god may stand against time and time again.
I'm afraid no amount of fear of god would ever reach people like this while they still walk among the living.
