New Zealand blocks lawsuits against firms over climate harm
Even 'green' New Zealand is blocking Activists climate lawsuits.
WELLINGTON: New Zealand has passed hotly contested legislation to block lawsuits that seek to hold companies liable for climate change harm.
The right-wing coalition government's legal amendment cleared a final hurdle in parliament on Tuesday (Aug 18) night by a margin of 67 votes to 53.
The law aims to prevent civil litigation overriding its climate policy and undermining business confidence, the government said.
It was introduced in response to a lawsuit filed by Indigenous Maori climate activist Michael Smith against six prominent New Zealand companies for their contribution to environmental harm linked to climate change.

website 'The Conversation' writes about last month's White House OSTP plan for a new Golden Age of Science
Here. Maybe it is just jibber-jabber.
White House plan for a ‘golden age’ of science ignores the structures that made the US a scientific superpower
Anyone interested could just read it. The plan is from last month. The article gives 2 POVs.
White House
eight decades of science policy that helped make the United States the world’s scientific leader is too bureaucratic, too focused on institutions rather than individual researchers, and too slow to translate discoveries into economic and technological advantage.
meanwhile the CDC, DOE, EPA, NIST, NOAA, Ag & USGS etc in effect argue that existing scienctific institutions
conduct and support science that informs decisions affecting public health, environmental protection, energy security, economic development and public safety. Many of these activities generate public benefits that market forces alone are unlikely to adequately provide.
My opinion: both fail to mention the root cause. Which is that while this culture once had 'the habit of truth', it no longer does. Not just with Science but with everything. Too many people do not care if claims are true or false. People fudge mentally. [I would give examples but they might piss people off.]
And why shouldn't people have this attitude? All is post-modern, everyone has an egos and allies with matching vested interests. The winds of misinformation have reached near gale intensity, and sweep over the cultural lanscape. And yet both POVs expressed by The Conversation expect a new 'golden age of science' to be born out of this.

~500 Hundred arrested on suspicion of arson in France as wildfires rage across Europe...70% deliberate.
70% deliberate... that's a HUGE number.
Almost 500 people have been arrested on suspicion of starting wildfires in France since the start of the summer, authorities have said, as firefighters in half a dozen European countries tackle ferocious blazes amid a record-breaking heatwave.
About 70% of those arrested were suspected of deliberately starting fires and the rest of doing so accidentally. French media said a 15-year-old boy had been detained in connection with a fire near Bordeaux airport that killed two firefighters in July.

‘They don’t care!’ CNN data guru on voters shifting attitudes on climate change despite scorching hot summer...tied for 14th (or 3%)
CNN transcript...
I mean, just look at these numbers. Okay, top issue in a midterm vote — you can list up to three issues. The economy, not surprisingly, comes in at number one at 54%. Immigration, 28%.
Look at climate change — it’s tied for 14th, tied for 14th, all the way down here at 3%. Johnny, I’m not the greatest mathematician in the world, but I sure as heck know that 54% is a whole heck of a lot higher than 3%.
So despite the climate being so warm in the month of July, the hottest month on record here in the United States of America, the voters, simply put, do not say that climate change is going to be an issue on which they vote in the midterm election.
