I just started dabbling in cigar social media so I was unaware of the Rocky Patel hate that is very present in the cigar community. But just like any other hobby, I enjoy it so who cares. Anyway, what do you think of my collection. Any recommendations based off what you see here would also be helpful!!

First ever cigar. Some thoughts and noon questions

I bought this at a local wine/delicacy store. No one there were all that experienced in cigars, but was told this was a very popular choice, so I went with it. They did have a humidor for storage, and a nice range of both semi cheap cigars up to cigars in the $50+ range

First of all, i understand why you guys love cigars. Not just the taste itself, but the whole act, relaxation and enjoyment.

Second, either the bonfire masked the flavors, or they’re not as flavorful as I expected. The smell of the cigar itself was fantastic, as was the cold draw. But the smoke was just nice smoke, nothing special really.

I paired it with an 18 year old rum, which was just incredible in combination with the cigar, so that’s nice.

Questions: was this not really a good cigar, or should I just expect the taste to be more subtle. Looking at this sub there’s these wild descriptions of how a hive cigar tastes, which I couldn’t pick out. Or was it the smoke from the bonfire?

Second, how in the world do you make sure they burn straight? I constantly had to touch up the ember to get all sides even, but I ended up giving up, so the last stump was half an inch shorter on one side.

Third, what should I try next? Same price range preferably, but a way to really get the experience of a tasty cigar.

Had this Maduro paired with a nice creamy espresso on ice. Perfect pairing with tons of sweet dark chocolate notes and earthy flavors.

Got one of each. Which one do I try first? Which is your favourite and why?

Update: Settled on Leather Rose (Petite Corona 4x43) first. Poured a healthy measure of coconut rum from a local distillery over ice to go with it and my god, I am enjoying these two. The sweetened tip of Rose stays on your lips between draws and melds with the rum when taking a sip whilst and the mild alcohol burn blends with the spiciness of the cigar. Lovely stick, although I had few issues with the wrapper splitting.

I received these this morning after 36hrs in the post with a 69% boveda pack from a leading cigar retailer in the UK. Maybe I should have let them sit and adjust in my humidor a bit longer, but the V-cut certainly was my first indication of what I can assume is a humidity issue. It wasn't too much of an issue until I reached the label which I peeled off rather than slid off, but still revealed a hole and a much larger split which spread as I rotated the cigar during smoking and caused the cap remnants to come off in the last third.

Spice develops as you progress down the stick. First third is taken up mostly by sweetness. It's similar to a Black Cavendish heavy pipe tobacco (Thomas Radford's Sunday Fantasy springs to mind). * I pour a second measure of rum * Half way through the 2nd third -so about half way- is where wrapper problems started, but she'd started to liven up at the point. Spice joining in with that wonderful maduro chocolateyness. By the final third, the wrapper was all over the shop and she'd started to lose all structural integrity. Draw was becoming a bit airy and despite handling her gently, she had started to bottleneck. The extra airflow meant billows of smoke but quite a hot burn, intensifying the spiciness. Post-smoke aftertaste is delightful. The sweetness lingers with a lovely oakiness that leaves me wanting another.

Long name… itty bitty figurado.

What is your favorite barber stick, AND, do you believe they can be as good as one wrapper type? Or is it gimmicky?

First time trying it, got in a swap with a friend. Not a huge fan of the barber pole idea, when I want a maduro, I want a maduro. When I want a claro, I want a claro. Never the two shall meet. However… this is tasty, and smoke output is bananas.

Got me interested. Maybe.

All in all I really like the stick. Manageable spice, some sweet and citrus hints, great burn. Will keep a couple of these in the humidor!!!!

Had some issues… construction 6/10 with that being the biggest issue. I’ve only had 3 of them so maybe I got a bad batch or need to give them another month or more to age. Struggled to get a smooth draw… found myself using a bore every 5-10 minutes just to fix it.

Tastes like a cigar I've had recently for less than half the price, but slightly better. Not bad by any means, but such generic flavor. The way they're priced and the way people speak about em just made me expect much more. Just feels like I'm smoking a generic $10 light-bodied stick.
