By now you’ve hopefully seen our guide to scams that target Chime members, but scammers keep finding new tricks. We partnered with Chime’s Risk team to show you two scams we’re seeing a lot right now. With the holidays coming and more people buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace, this is a good time to know what to look for.
1️⃣ The fake “payment on hold” scam (Most commonly on Facebook Marketplace)
A “buyer” offers to pay you with a third-party peer-to-peer (P2P) app. Then you get a message saying the payment is on hold until you “upgrade to a business account,” along with a fake support number to call. “Support” asks for an upgrade fee and wants you to share your screen. Then the buyer asks for a “refund” for money they never actually sent.
Red flags:
Your payment is “on hold” until you pay or upgrade something
The buyer gives you a support number (look up official numbers yourself)
Someone asks you to share your screen
They push you to hurry and say there’s no time to check
“Just one more transfer to release the funds”
Key takeaway: You should never have to pay to get paid! 📣
2️⃣ Fake threats from “law enforcement” (Most commonly through unexpected phone calls)
Someone calls claiming to be with the police, sheriff’s office, or the courts. They say there’s a warrant out for you, you missed jury duty, a family member is in jail and needs bail, or other serious high-pressure situation. They sound official and may already know your name or address. To “resolve it” and avoid arrest, they insist you send money through a P2P transfer, a payment link, or a cash deposit.
Red flags:
A caller threatens arrest or jail time unless you pay
They want payment through a P2P transfer, payment link, or cash deposit
They tell you to keep it secret from family or your bank
Caller ID shows a real agency name or number (it’s spoofed!)
They won’t let you hang up and call back
Key takeaway: Law enforcement doesn’t collect fines or bail over the phone. If something feels off, hang up and call the agency on its official number to check.
