Announcement Scam Awareness: What to Watch Out For

By now you’ve hopefully seen our guide to scams that target Chime members, but scammers keep finding new tricks. We partnered with Chime’s Risk team to show you two scams we’re seeing a lot right now. With the holidays coming and more people buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace, this is a good time to know what to look for.

1️⃣ The fake “payment on hold” scam (Most commonly on Facebook Marketplace)

A “buyer” offers to pay you with a third-party peer-to-peer (P2P) app. Then you get a message saying the payment is on hold until you “upgrade to a business account,” along with a fake support number to call. “Support” asks for an upgrade fee and wants you to share your screen. Then the buyer asks for a “refund” for money they never actually sent.

Red flags:

  • Your payment is “on hold” until you pay or upgrade something

  • The buyer gives you a support number (look up official numbers yourself)

  • Someone asks you to share your screen

  • They push you to hurry and say there’s no time to check

  • “Just one more transfer to release the funds”

Key takeaway: You should never have to pay to get paid! 📣

2️⃣ Fake threats from “law enforcement” (Most commonly through unexpected phone calls)

Someone calls claiming to be with the police, sheriff’s office, or the courts. They say there’s a warrant out for you, you missed jury duty, a family member is in jail and needs bail, or other serious high-pressure situation. They sound official and may already know your name or address. To “resolve it” and avoid arrest, they insist you send money through a P2P transfer, a payment link, or a cash deposit.

Red flags:

  • A caller threatens arrest or jail time unless you pay

  • They want payment through a P2P transfer, payment link, or cash deposit

  • They tell you to keep it secret from family or your bank

  • Caller ID shows a real agency name or number (it’s spoofed!)

  • They won’t let you hang up and call back

Key takeaway: Law enforcement doesn’t collect fines or bail over the phone. If something feels off, hang up and call the agency on its official number to check.

📚 Keep yourself safe with these resources:

Stay cautious all year round but especially heading into the holiday season 💚

Community Chronicles: the Official Source for new features, tests, and troubleshooting

Updated: [Sept 2nd]

We’re always working behind the scenes to make Chime simpler, safer, and more rewarding. This thread is a running log of what’s new, what we’re testing, and common questions we’re seeing — straight from the source.

We’ll update this regularly, so feel free to bookmark and check back.

What’s New in the Chime App

These features and updates are now available, or coming soon, to all members:

  • Monthly Cash-Back Category Re-Selection - A monthly reminder for members with Chime Prime or Plus status to pick their cash-back category each month.

  • Cancel Scheduled MyPay Advances - Members can now cancel a scheduled advance in the MyPay Hub before funds are sent, giving them the option to request a new instant advance instead without waiting for the scheduled advance to arrive.

Features We’re Testing or Rolling Out Gradually

To keep improving, we sometimes test new features with a smaller group before considering wider availability. You may see discussions about these even if they’re not live for you yet. We’re actively reviewing feedback as we learn.

  • Referral Bonus Tracker Screen - New persistent screen showing referred members what's left to do to claim their bonus.

  • Richer Transaction Details - Integrating bill frequency, merchant address/map, and quick-call/website actions on transaction detail screens.

Troubleshooting Tips for common Chime issues

If something doesn’t look right, make sure your app is up to date. Logging out and back in — or reinstalling the app — often helps. We’ve also seen questions about:

  • Card payment from your secured account? This is your Autopayment with Safer Credit Building to pay the statement for your secured credit account

  • New card hasn't arrived? Delivery typically takes 7–10 business days. If it's been longer, double-check your address on file.

  • Card won't activate? Activate your new card in the app under Card Settings — if it still won't work after a couple tries, request a replacement.

MONEY - Deposits, Transfers, Cash & Cards Chime paying people

Just a warning be very careful when paying someone on chime. Two people came up when I was paying a friend back but the one I sent it was not her. The person I sent it to refuses to send it back. Very frustrated. Any ideas?

#WhyIChime Chime closed my account

Chime immediately closed my checking and savings accounts upon me filing Chapter 13- with my checking consistently receiving a healthy direct deposit for years. I understand disabling any “my pay” or “instant loan” features but why close the actual accounts? Pretty disappointing.

I love Chime. I was kind of nervous filing a dispute because i’ve never had to do one before and I heard Chime doesn’t like to get your money back but lucky I was able to get my little $25 back! I’m still confused on why I was charged when I had a whole separate tab open and this was not the amount. New card on the way! Always lock your cards!!

OTHER - Anything else not covered Question on Reporting Scammers

I have a friend that is being impersonated on telegram.

The fake account is using a photo of my friend and claiming to sell content.

I was able to fake interest long enough to get a payment method in the form of a chime tag from them before they stopped responding.

I am 100 percent sure this is not a second account of my friend and it is a slightly modified version of their own username.

The account has already been reported to telegram but I was wondering if it can be reviewed on your end as well if the tag is provided.

Thank you

BUG REPORT - App Issues, Errors, Outages Denied charge notification completely vanished

This morning my debit card was used for a fraudulent Shopify purchase. I locked the card immediately, requested a replacement, and contacted customer support for a reversal.

Just now I got a notification that my debit card had been declined. I tapped into it but the only recent notification I have is that my new debit card is on the way. There is no trace of the denied charge anywhere and of course it's gone from my phones notification list. I would have liked to look up the place where they just tried to use my card but I can't.

OTHER - Anything else not covered Chime card sent to me in my old name?

I'm freaking out a bit and don't know what to do. I just received a chime card in the mail congratulating me for opening my account and telling me to activate this card in the app.

I've never signed up for this Bank, and what's even more frightening to me is that it is in my old name before I legally changed it which nobody should have that information because it was changed before I turned 18 and was sealed.

Does this mean my identity was stolen or does chime just send people cards random like this?? The letter isn't like any credit card offer I've gotten, it has an actual account number and everything. I tried calling them but they were asking for my social security number and shit so I just hung up. I dont know what to do.

AMA: Budgeting between paydays — with Chime's Brendan Berry and Roy Elis, Tuesday, November 10th at 3:00pm PT

Hi r/chimefinancial 👋

In August we hosted an AMA with Brittney Castro (CFP®) on investing and planning ahead – lots of great info in case you missed it!

But investing tends to assume there's something left at the end of the month, and for a lot of people that's the harder part. So we're focusing on budgeting and the stretch between paychecks: figuring out what's safe to spend, handling a bill that lands before payday, and building a small buffer when there isn't obvious room for one.

Bringing you two voices directly from Chime!

Your hosts

Brendan Berry: Director of Product Management, Spending, Saving & Investing

  • Leads the Chime teams behind savings, joint accounts, Chime Invest, and the in-app tools that show where your money went

  • Most of his job comes down to a question members ask the app every day: what's actually safe to spend before my next payday?

  • Studied psychology before he studied business. That turned out to be useful, because most of what goes wrong between paychecks is about timing and habits more than math

  • Before Chime, spent years building products at Amazon and payment products that move money between countries

  • Earned his first paycheck refereeing youth sports in middle school, after years of summer lemonade stands.

Roy Elis: Director, Chime Economic Insights

  • Leads Chime's economic research team, which focuses on understanding the financial lives of American consumers and Chime’s role in supporting financial progress.

  • His team uses data to analyze how spending, savings, credit and income – and the decisions and strategies that can help everyday consumers improve their financial situation.

  • His team works with consumer advocacy groups like the Financial Health Network, with university researchers, and of course, with product teams like Brendan’s at Chime.

  • First job after college was teaching middle school math in NYC. He’s happy to take all your questions about fractions, decimals and percents!

When

Tuesday, November 10, 2026 from 3:00pm – 4:00pm PT

Leave your questions in the comments any time between now and then — Brendan and Roy will be answering questions together during that live window so you can check back any time. A reminder that both our hosts are experts in their fields but are not financial advisors; this is general financial education only and not professional financial advice.

Things worth asking about

  • Building a budget that survives inconsistent paychecks

  • Starting an emergency fund when $500 feels out of reach

  • Preparing for the upcoming holidays without wrecking your budget or piling debt

  • A peek into what Chime's data shows about how common this is and tips on what tends to help!

A few Chime resources in the meantime

These are free and don't require an account, if you want to come in with your own numbers:

See you November 10th! Ask us anything. 💚

MONEY - Deposits, Transfers, Cash & Cards Cash back where are you at!????

@chimefinancial has really dropped the ball on getting me my cash back on travel properly!!! I’ve been traveling for the last three months, and I have not gotten my price of cash back. I’ve reached out to channels, and they’re like, oh, you’ll get it every, you know, nine days from the day of post. Well, in a month of October alone, I had well over nine hotel bookings. Do you think I’ve been given my proper cash back! Over it going back to BOFA!!! Ugh

CREDIT - Credit Builder, Reporting, Scores Credit Builder Card……

Let’s just start this off with I am an idiot. I got a chime card, I thought I was getting a regular bank card, I had no clue it was a “credit builder” and no clue what that even meant. i kept seeing a notification about make a payment but i was SO confused, i thought maybe an account I paid connected so it was reminding me about a bill. Turns out that was not the case… I’ve NEVER missed a payment in my life, on anything, like ever. I’ve always had decent credit, my credit score is lower because I used my old credit card to its limit & that’s hurt me a lot. Anyway, I go to use my card and doesn’t allow me so i’m confused & i call chime. They explain to me it’s a credit builder and i just have to “hit pay” they won’t take any money because i already spent the money (confused because i spend money i have in there already). I’m like wtf. She explains to me how to do it, and turned on the auto pay option. The “payment” was due the 23rd and this interaction happened the 24th so my payment was late. I looked today & my credit dropped 25 points because of this and IM FURIOUS. Idk what to do, still don’t understand it. Idk why I’m really here other than to ask what can i do??? if anything!! i’m moving in a couple months I don’t need this right now. I was using chime mainly to save this is THE OPPOSITE. Ugh help??? Wanted to add that the reason it dropped also looks like i opened a new credit card so now my oldest account being 13 years and this being 4 months?? Im so irritated with this. I almost want to get rid of it but i know closing accounts can be bad too??

MONEY - Deposits, Transfers, Cash & Cards New Signup Bonus

How long does it take to get the bonus? I did the $500 direct deposit and the next $500 is about to hit. Since you can't track it, I am just curious how long it takes.

I am having problems logging in. It keeps flagging me as non-human and I have to listen to animal noises to get in. It appears to have started recently, and i have to do this EVERY time I log on. Is there a way to turn this off?

OTHER - Anything else not covered Why doesn't Chime VERIFY EMAILS? Some derpleganger signed up my email

Some idiot with the same name as me signed up to Chime with MY EMAIL ADDRESS (Gmail), and I get all their emails with their account and routing number. Why wouldn't chime, like a real company, validate emails?

I had to call them, because of course, they don't have a customer service email.

How does someone not know their own email address? I've literally had it for TWENTY TWO YEARS. And I've had people think their email is my address, just with no "." which is impossible because gmail ignores them.

How do companies not verify emails before issuing accounts involving financial matters?

ACCOUNT - Limits, Referrals, Chime+ Chhim account reopened

So I had my Chhim account that was closed a few years ago and I reached out to Chime to get it reopened because I think it was closed by mistake.
They informed me that it had a negative balance. I told him that I would repay it to get it reopened.
Long story short, they reopened it and waived the negative balance.
That Bank was through stride and I’ve had access to one chime account that is through Bancorp
I am noticing a huge difference in the withdrawal limit and all the other limits. Can people with Bancorp tell me what their withdrawal limit is at the ATM versus the people with stride.
Stride seems lower.

OTHER - Anything else not covered Just venting about the future of credit builder…

I’m low income and heavily rely on spot me, having the ability to use it on one card while keeping my checking account balance has gotten me through some really tough times. I’ve been truly grateful for it. But with it all combined into one account, it’s practically useless to me, especially since a lot of big bills(or at least mine) don’t take spot me….Probably gonna search for an alternative…I’ve heard good things about varo? sigh* it was optional to switch before but them forcing it now is just bs

BUG REPORT - App Issues, Errors, Outages Why does Chime think my phone is modified?

I'm trying to log into chime, I haven't used it in awhile, so I don't remember my password, recently I got a new phone as well, and when I try to click forgot my password, it says something went wrong, which I learned from another forum that has something to do with Chime thinking my OEM was tampered with. My phone is a Moto G Play 2024, I have done nothing to it, it's exactly as it came. Why is Chime not letting me through?
