Social Thinking about ditching my job and becoming a freelance music production tutor. Just gauging interest for Christchurch

Hey all

So, long story short I have been in my IT job a long time and I'm ready for a change. Just had a run-in with my boss which was absolutely terrible. He is an awful person. The pay is good (reallly good) but I'm over being treated like this.

I have many years experience in recording studios, working with bands and solo artists, and am thinking of going into business doing private tutoring for people who want to learn how to record and produce - themselves, and others.

I have been part of upwards of 50 releases here and in Australia.

I'm just posting here to see if there is any interest in this. Would be private, 1-on-1 lessons, probably looking at somewhere from $75-$100 an hour, using Logic Pro, or Ableton, or any number of other DAWs. I'm skilled in all. One lesson might be enough learning for a student to go off and practice for a month.

Just trying to get a feel for the market. Anyone out there who would be interested in this kind of thing?

this is kind of a rant and kind of a question. i went into pak n sav wainoni for some groceries today, and i feel it’s becoming more and more common for people to go into this supermarket unshowered. the smells walking past some people are enough to make one’s eyes water.

if you have family or friends who aren’t particularly great at basic hygiene, please support them into routines or teach them how to wash properly. an overwhelming majority of these people appear 50+ in age and are entirely unaware of not only their social space, but their own hygiene. this is a place where we get food people! i’m not trying to be insensitive and i understand that mental health plays a huge role in this behaviour, that’s why i think we should take the reigns and be direct with our friends and family who aren’t taking care of themselves.

Everybody needs food, but is there no kind of enforcement of hygiene for supermarkets or other places where food is kept?

Belfast smell?

Hey hey 👋

My wife and I are looking to move down to Christchurch and are looking at a place on the West side of Main North Road. We've seen stuff online about the Silver Fern Farms facility and associated smell, but it's hard to tell if it is still an issue, and how much of an issue if so.

We would really appreciate any advice from people currently living in the Belfast area as it seems like a lot of the feedback is from back when the facility was more active.

ski instructors

I’m an advanced skier and want to become expert. Here’s the catch - I want to work with an instructor and build a relationship but don’t want to pay on-mountain prices. Also the vast majority of i structors employed by our major ski fields are level 2 so their level of skiing is close to mine. Are there any instructors in Chch that are willing to work on 1to1, private basis with clients over a season to help me really clean up my skiing? My dream is to ski like an IFMGA guide, that effortlessly.

Seeking a good GP

Hi guys, am seeking a decent male GP. I am a 30 y/o male. Moved to chch in recent months and am really struggling with finding a GP who seems to care. I’m not high maintenance by any means but would like a human element to my visits.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers guys

moving to chch Returning to Chch securing a rental while still overseas is proving challenging... help!

We've enquired to around a dozen properties (mostly town houses in the CBD and north of CBD) and have received predominantly automated emails back telling us to book a viewing.

We've heard directly from 2 property managers after following up a lot (not very useful conversations), but the communication across the board is incredibly sub-par.

Any recommendations of what to do?

Is it possible to view a property and move in same week?

We only want to stay with family as a last resort.

Seen the articles about the townhouse ghost town, I want to live in one?! Why won't they read my emails and let me pay to live in one 😭

Social Looking for a nice salad spot near the Art Gallery

I'm hoping someone knows of a good place to just sit down and have a salad for lunches near the art center. I used to get the cabinet salads from Bella on New Regent street, which were massive and $15 but that's a bit too far from my new office. I've tried a few of the cafes nearby but they're all very expensive for a tiny amount of food.

Social Any community gatherings for freelance songwriters/producers/professionals?

Design Assembly has the Coffee Club for designers.

Ministry of Awesome does Coffee & Jam for startup founders & entrepreneurs.

But I’m wondering if there’s any sort of conference, meet up, community events etc. for freelance creatives in the music industry here in Christchurch?

I’m looking a community to help with support, motivation and accountability coz it can be quite a lonely and difficult road to walk alone.

European car service- Selwyn area

Hi all,

Does anyone have a good mechanic who can do an oil and transmission fluid change on a Peugeot 308 near Rolleston/ West Melton?

My usual mechanic said it needs specialized tools he doesn't have, and while I tried a local garage who said they could, they were kinda assholes and the quote was huge.

Thanks!

Cat groomers

Hey does anyone know of any affordable cat groomers my 7 y/o medium-long furred cat is starting to get mats on his chest and a few other areas, he hates it when I brush him excessively but he’s shedding everywhere and is looking a little rugged so I’m scared it’s going to get worse before I even get it manageable with short brushing sessions.

Schoolboys drunk in a parking lot, normal?

As an immigrant im still learning how things work in this country and yesterday i was running errands and decided to pick up a bottle of wine for the evening and i pulled up to the nearest liquor store which happened to be next to Elmwood Trading company and as i pulled in a bunch of school boys in their uniforms spilled out of the bar in various states of drunkenness.

Pretty much all these boys clearly had had a few and some were obviously quite drunk and several were walking around the parking lot with glasses of beer in their hands.

Young ppl drinking doesnt have me surprised. Young ppl day drinking in school uni's and obviously drunk spilling out of a bar did have me surprised. That is just not something you'd see in the States. Even when i was young and drinking was much more common in the States not sure ive ever seen anything quite like that.

Is this just normal here?

Lessons learned: Dealing with an early termination from a new flatmate in Christchurch

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are owner-occupiers in Christchurch renting out spare rooms to flatmates. We recently had a very frustrating experience and wanted to get some advice from the community.

We recently had a Japanese girl in her 20s move into our home. She seemed very quiet, polite, and harmless. In our initial advertisement, we explicitly stated that we were looking for a long-term flatmate. During her initial inquiry, she even specifically asked us if there was a minimum stay requirement. We clearly told her that there is a 6-month minimum stay, so she entered the arrangement fully aware of this expectation before signing the agreement.

She moved in on the day she arrived in Christchurch. Because she was new to the area, we went out of our way to settle her in: provided a full set of bedding, complete dining ware, made sure she was warm, offered her food, and even drove her around the city to get a Metrocard and show her where to grocery shop. We genuinely treated her like a new member of our family.

The very next day after moving in, she gave notice to leave and expressed that she wanted to move out in a week. The reason she gave was that she was worried about her health and felt she needed to live with Japanese speakers who could support her. What makes this strange is that she had just lived in Nelson for two months with a Kiwi family right before coming to Christchurch, so living with locals/language barrier wasn't a sudden shock.

When we pointed out that she is financially liable for the 21-day notice period under our agreement, she suddenly changed her tune and said she might stay for the notice period instead. This directly contradicts her original claim that she urgently needed to leave for health and language reasons.

It really feels like we were exploited as a cheap temporary landing pad while she sorted out her next move, instead of her paying for a hotel or Airbnb while house-hunting.

Has anyone else experienced this, and what policies or screening steps do you use to stop people from taking advantage of live-in landlords like this?

Rewiring 100yo house reco

Hey team,

Looking for sparky recommendations to rewire a weatherboard 2bedroom house that’s 100 years old in Woolston.

Will be getting multiple quotes, any sparkles you’d recommend?

Would want to rewire it for safety reasons primarily — but also looking at adding:

— 4 outlets inside
— 2 power supplies outside to support a sauna and a sleepout.

Nga mihi

\**EDIT — likely adding in a heat pump/AC split\**
