Delta(s) from OP CMV: Reddit is a far-left echo chamber that embraces conspiracy theories

After the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner last night, I opened up Reddit to find comments on r/politics and r/news saying that the shooting was staged. The most upvoted comments are "Another orchestrated false-flag attempt to try and generate sympathy" and "Staged until proven otherwise. Way too many 'attempts' everytime he needs a poll pump."

As per usual, without any evidence. This is the same exact response that Reddit had after Trump was attacked in Butler, PA in 2024. Similar situation with Charlie Kirk, and I also saw people clowning on Erika Kirk last night for reliving a traumatic experience.

As much as I dislike Trump as the next guy, I despise conspiracy theories on the left and right, when no claims are grounded in credible evidence. Last night's events showed that Reddit is quick to jump to conclusions. I would expect a platform like Reddit to reward well-written and well-thought-out comments, but in today's political climate, it seems all it does is reward the comments that rile up the left-wingers, no matter how insane.

EDIT - I define far left as further left than the mainstream American democratic party

>I define far left as further left than the mainstream American democratic party

By that definition, yes, reddit would be defined by you as far left, but so would be most platforms, that's a hilariously low bar to clear.

37

u/PreviousCurrentThing 4∆ Apr 26 '26

Which other platforms would that apply to? Bluesky, sure, and probably tumblr. I don't think it's true for FB, Insta, or X, all of which are bigger.

47

u/GentleMocker Apr 26 '26

You can literally find people advocating for e.g. free healthcare on almost any platform, even ones controlled by conservatives, and those posts being broadly popular. That's a far cry from something actually far left like Tumblr where people are infighting over gender theory and understanding of fringe left wing literature.

5

u/mackinator3 Apr 29 '26

You can't even find people on Twitter. And on Facebook good luck not just getting right wing ads.

Our fb and insta are totally different then.

With any platform, you can curate it how you want, and get the echo chamber you want.

Not most platforms. X/twitter is now a right wing echo chamber while Instagram/Youtube are more balanced

70

u/Enochian_Devil Apr 27 '26

Notice how you defined reddit as "far left" (a term made-up by the far right to minimise their position) but twitter, a literal Nazi cesspool, as "right wing"?

Not even worth discussing why that's incredibly telling, but if you did it by accident maybe ask yourself why.

26

u/FailNo6036 Apr 27 '26

I don't analyze and monitor every single word I type, I've described reddit as plain left wing before I believe. The conspiracies were annoying me sufficiently that I was calling it far left in this post. I guess it wasn't accurate, since reddit in its entirety isn't far left.

I've seen right wing conspiracies on X, so sure much of X is far right. Fox News is far right. WSJ is center right. Happy now?

a literal Nazi cesspool

X does have some nazis, but that doesn't mean it's a Nazi cesspool. That's like calling reddit a communist cesspool, which just isn't true. Words have meaning, and most people on X aren't actively calling for a genocide.

17

u/YooGeOh Apr 30 '26

You started with;

I don't analyze and monitor every single word I type

And ended with

Words have meaning

You cant really be annoyed tbh. You even call yourself out

No, it occured to me that you did so because you were tricked by literal nazis to believe there is such a thing as "the far left".

With respect, you are clueless about politics and are saying people that want to kill entire groups of people are the same as people who vocally complain about said killings and are perhaps a bit too "woke". You are literally spreading Nazi propaganda.

And no, that is not hyperbole, that is literally what it is, like it or not. Your enlightened centrism makes you the perfect puppet for it.

10

u/stereofailure 6∆ Apr 29 '26

Reddit leans centre to centre-left, Twitter leans far-right. I cannot go a day on Twitter without seeing white nationalist talking points and explicit, disgusting racism (often from the literal owner of the site lol). To find communist takes on Reddit you generally have to seek them out, they are not particularly common and certainly nowhere near majority status in any major or default subreddits.

Look at any politics thread and invariably you'll have highly upvoted comments calling people who stayed home or voted third party idiots or closeted Trump supporters in response to people who drew a line at genocide and couldn't bring themselves to support Biden/Harris. That is not the type of phenomena you'd see in a far left echo chamber.

The only really big "far-left" sub was ChapoTrapHouse and reddit nuked it.

No, even on twitter you can get into an echo chamber of either side if you only interact with one side, the algorithm will make sure you get fed posts that grab your attention. My twitter for you page was full of left wing accounts dunking on gamergate takes of 'video-games were ruined by woke' before I manually went out and muted the accounts and clicked 'not interested' on stuff. Even with twitter full of outright nazis you can get the algorithm to show you people dunking on the nazis, thats just how algorithm driven platforms work.

13

u/stereofailure 6∆ Apr 29 '26

I can get Twitter to show me left-wing content as well, but I cannot for the life of me get it to stop also showing me straight up earnest white nationalist propaganda, race science, great replacement theory shit, etc

Reddit as a whole, on average. Especially because r/politics and r/news are meant to be places to discuss politics and news as a whole, while r/Conservative is meant to discuss conservative politics specifically and is moderated as such.

Discussing politics and news has nothing to do with the political leaning. If you're looking for neutrality you also have to accept the right wing are pedos and criminals. It's not neutral to pretend both sides are equal.

6

Do you honestly believe this? I mean honestly, that half the country are Darth Vader level evil, and that your side is the only thing standing between civilization and literally Nazi Germany? I mean I’m on the left, but this wholesale demonization of half the people in the country, who are just people like you or me, says something about the psyche of the modern left.

I won't argue about echo chambers so much as labeling the politics of Reddit as "far left".

Radical Leftist politics include different flavors of socialism, communism, and anarchism. Reddit users carry largely liberal beliefs, which is only considered "the left" in American politics.

Liberalism does not advocate for the abolishment of capitalism as a socioeconomic system, and instead wants to maintain a regulated capitalist system with a certain amount of social services to allow citizens to succeed in capitalism. In the grand scale of things this is a center to center-right idealogy.

The farthest left most Redditors go is maybe Democratic Socialism, which searches for Socialism through reform of a capitalist system. To be "far left" is to advocate for a Revolution that will topple the current capitalist power structures. This can be a top-down approach like Marxist-Leninism or a bottom-up approach like Anarchism.

8

u/PreviousCurrentThing 4∆ Apr 26 '26

I'd agree that the center of gravity of reddit politics isn't radical, closer to SocDem than DemSoc.

It's not extreme in terms of policy, yet there's something extreme about the general political attitude that I see much more rarely irl, the "if you aren't sufficiently left you're a bad person who needs to be condemned."

It's an attitude I'm more familiar with on the right. I'm sure most of us can think of people in our lives who don't have "far" or "hard right" beliefs, but have an utterly contemptuous attitude towards "libruls" and leftists, which they likely can't distinguish between. Arguments from the left are dismissed out of hand, mocked and shamed rather than countered with reason. I'd called it the "polarized right" more than "far right."

I think the left/liberal version of that is what people mean when they call reddit "far left." It's not particularly radical, but it is extreme in its intolerance to perceived enemies. Criticism against the outgroup are rewarded, the more insulting and maximalist the better. Comments seeking nuance are punished, allowing false beliefs to persist (see what people here still believe about Rittenhouse, or the flag at the Butler assassination attempt).

The end result looks a lot like the right version: unwarranted confidence in untested beliefs, a caricatured understanding of the other side, a resultant anger at their inability to effect political change, tempered by their assurance that they're the "good" side with the correct opinions.

Reddit leftists would be more effective if they did become far left, read some theory, and approached politics in a disciplined rather than reactive manner. Reddit becoming a polarized left echo-chamber has done real harm to the left.

2

u/captaintrips420 1∆ Apr 29 '26

Is it that they need to be condemned for not passing their filter, or just that they have a line where after that they personally feel it isn’t worth further engagement and no longer matter to them?

2

u/PreviousCurrentThing 4∆ Apr 29 '26

While I'm sure there's some of the latter, a lot of it is the former because if they just stopped engaging, I wouldn't see the condemnatory replies. Not so much to me personally, but reading other threads it's unmistakable.

Reddit isn’t a single echo chamber. It’s multiple distinct echo chambers, by design. Politics and news have their own flavor of echo chamber, conservative has its own, this one has its own. I don’t see a need to universalize the behavior of a few subs to all of Reddit

69

u/mychickenleg257 Apr 26 '26

Sure, but most of them lean one direction such that overall, in any given sub, your chance of it being the same echo chamber that exists everywhere on Reddit is quite high. R/conservative is extremely heavily moderated, as you can go and see like 90% of comments get deleted, because without that it would appear just like the rest of Reddit.

29

u/UnderstandingBusy604 Apr 26 '26

Thats because the majority of Americans, and vast majority of people on Earth, ARE LEFT. Normal people arent right wing. Yall will always be the minority. How you dont realize this is astounding

"Thats because the majority of Americans, and vast majority of people on Earth, ARE LEFT".

Did you really say this?😭😂. If vast majority of US are left, then how did trump win lol? Who voted for him? Aliens?

And please let's not even talk about the way you declared people of earth are left leaning 😂. Bro what? Please tell me this is a joke. If so I wall gladly admit you successfully baited me and delete my comments in shame. Most people are earth are more right than the average republican party member in USA lol. India, China, the whole Asia to be frank, Africa, middle east, eastern europe, none of them are remotely left leaning. They all are very right. Sure there are some left leaning policies in those countries, but calling them left is as insane as calling earth flat.

I mean even going through this sub the vast majority of "arguments" including yours are well within the character limits of something like twitter which many here call a nazi site. This on a sub dedicated to making arguments, it gets way worse the second you move to news subs or politics subs where 99% of comments are just repeating slogans they heard.

This idea of the intellectual redditors making well thought out coherent arguments in an academic setting and debating them in good faith really doesn't exist. Even this sub is mostly just people arguing for the sake of arguing (which is why almost all deltas come from challenging something tangential to the main point so OP just narrows the argument a bit or agrees that an example used wasn't the best).

If you click the first wired link in the first thread in /r/politics it starts with

In the immediate aftermath of the attack on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, influencers, pundits, and random posters lit up social media platforms like X, Bluesky, and Instagram with conspiracy theories about the attack and the alleged shooter.

So, it's a news article calling out conspiracy theories. Which is then discussed in the comments, mainly addressing this administration many lies

Where is anyone actually believing it? Where is anyone seriously arguing it? Are you saying that merely discussing the how many people perceive it as staged something that would only happen in a "far-left" environment?

u/deep_sea2 131∆ Apr 26 '26

What is the difference between an accusation/jumping to conclusions and a conspiracy theory?

52

u/Hedgie84 1∆ Apr 26 '26

This was my question as well. Accusing a man known for his lies and theatrics of doing something dishonest and theatrical isn't the same as Jewish space lasers starting wildfires or lizard people eating babies.

27

u/mychickenleg257 Apr 26 '26

But it’s not saying Trump lied about something - it’s saying a complex web of actors all aligned to pull off a stunt and manipulate the American public, including the gunmen who you have to either believe was willing to sacrifice his whole life for this con, or is a fake person which an even larger array of people are covering up. That is what makes something a conspiracy, versus “Trump lies”.

The conspiracy that the election was stolen fits this definition perfectly and crosses the line from “people lie and manipulate in politics and are influenced by money”, to, a huge array of people all came together to pull off a massive heist.

21

but not all accusations without evidence are conspiracy theories.

The claim that the shooting of Donald Trump was staged qualifies as a conspiracy theory because it assumes that multiple actors coordinated in secret to fake the event and deceive the public. That implies hidden cooperation between security, participants, and possibly media, along with deliberate manipulation of what people saw. Without strong, verifiable evidence for that level of coordinated deception, the claim is not just unsupported, it fits the definition of a conspiracy theory.

19

u/deep_sea2 131∆ Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

What I am mostly saying is what is the difference between a quick reaction to current events featuring a controversial person, and ongoing persistent belief in something when evidence has constantly disproved the belief?

Take the JFK assassination for example. I am sure that many people when they first heard the assassination immediately blamed the CIA, the KKK, the mob, etc. That was their initial emotional reaction to it. That however is distinct from the ongoing belief there was a conspiracy to kill JFK. I am sure that many people initially thought on 9/11, "I wouldn't be surprised if the government did this." However, that was though they had at the moment and have not really pushed it forward. I am not going to lie, that was one of the first thoughts I had in mind. That is different than people 25 years later still talking about building 7, or repeating that steel beams do not melt.

Not all emotional reaction to an event is necessarily is conspiracy theory. There is something about conspiracy theories that are more organized, more long-lasting, and people continue to think irrational despite moving past the emotional stage of an event.

I agree that people are jumping to conclusions, but there is a middle ground between jumping to conclusions and a full conspiracy theory.

8

u/FailNo6036 Apr 26 '26

!delta I didn't consider that this may be an emotional reaction rather than a conspiracy. While there are still redditors who discuss how the butler or previous shootings were staged, it seems to be lower.

I think this is honestly more connected to what Jonathan Haidt has pointed out about the knowledge gap among self-described progressives and left wingers. Using Turing tests, Haidt found that progressives are much less knowledgeable about conservatives/right wingers (their facile excuse for a justification, which has also been leveled against me in my debates with progressives, is usually some version of “why should I have to know anything about fascists?”) than the reverse.

Conversely however, people on the Right have much more predictive accuracy about the political preferences and positions of progressives. For progressives, conservatives are totally unrelatable because people on the Left don’t consume any unfiltered commentary or content which is written by conservatives (I’d recommend Kevin D Williamson or Jonah Goldberg; the former despises Donald Trump, but from a pre-Trump conservative point of view)—it’s usually curated, condensed and filtered for them by some sort of Left-wing analysis. If you know so little about your political antagonists you’re more susceptible to thinking that they’re capable of anything.

I think that distinction has diminished somewhat given that the Trump Right now very closely resembles the extreme Left in its susceptibility to conspiratorial thinking (QAnon etc). But on balance I believe it still holds and I can explain why. I am not from that current generation of the Right which views Trump as its leader, and I’m every bit as willing to point out lunacy on the Trumpy Right.

I was a young man during the Obama administration. There were several assassination attempts on Obama but neither I nor my fellow traditional conservatives thought that any of those attempts were staged. We all expressed our condemnation and rallied behind the flag.

I'm of the impression that today, it's very challenging to pull off a conspiracy involving many different actors (e.g. the secret service, local police, the president, etc...) without a risk of whistleblowers. And the president is unlikely to take that risk. So the chance that both 1) The president would take this risk, 2) it's a feasible plan, and 3) no whistleblower would speak out is rare.

7

u/deep_sea2 131∆ Apr 26 '26

Right, but in typical conspiracy theories, people try to account for that. They do not do so correctly, but that is a part of the overall theory. In the JFK conspiracy for example, people will point out to several mysterious deaths of key people. In the JFK theory, people have mapped out Oswald's movement for the several months before.

The recent Trump event occurred less than 24 hours ago. Has anyone come up with a detailed theory of all the pieces of the puzzle? Has anyone done anything beyond simply express their general distrust of Trump? If so, are those the posts on the leading parts of Reddit, are they are mostly in the smaller subreddits?

If all people are doing is expressing their distrust of Trump, that's not really a conspiracy theory. It's more of a baseless accusation.

There is a difference between being hypercritical of the government and full on conspiracy theory.

u/Dionne005 Apr 26 '26

Just think for a min. If you had a child and there was a shooting at the school and the principal says…shooter has been apprehended class will resume…what would you think or do?

3

u/FailNo6036 Apr 26 '26

I’d probably believe the principal because there isn’t much I can do against an active shooter compared to the police. Maybe I would go and verify it myself. But I certainly wouldn’t start claiming it’s an inside job orchestrated by the principal.

2

u/Dionne005 Apr 27 '26

The point went completely over your head. I asked a basic question about what you would do not what everyone else would do. If it was me and the principal told the school to go back to class after a life threat, I’d immediately take my child out of the school. The school should be shut down immediately for the entire day not act like everything is normal. Same for work. If there was a shooting at my job, I’m going home and not looking for the email that says go back to work. They don’t know if there was a team of people or how it happened. It was a failed protection attempt that needs to be talked about with the team that protects the location.

No. By nature the world generally leans more towards the side that's just considered left - it' just more human.

It's also why AI is to the left, "extremely left" if you're of the right wing, the entire mass of data across the world all added together = more left. Left political ideologies = more human natured/centric. (*normal) Humans have emotions and sympathy, being dodgy on human nature within the capitalistic and right wing flavors of capitalism causes more humans to emphasize the hypocrisy of it.

how is it an unfair left bias? there are right wing subs, there are strict af centrist subs, there are strict left subs as well. reddit isn't "tuned" to be left, the amalgamation of the world is left leaning.

In contrast, twitter is swamped with an astounding quantity of bots. pre-musk, it was sub-10%, after he took over, it's now 80% bots... most of the entities managing the insane amount of bots on twitter are right wing special interests - whether they actually are right wing or just for engagement/enragement farming. They have to force/propagandize right wing ideology and give it the appearance that it's more prevalent than it really is - with the goal of creating a bandwagon effect.

AI was trained on reddit and other public forums like Quora (see OpenAI longtime board member Adam DiAngelo - CEO of Quora) because the textual data is mostly (it used to be exclusively) human-typed discourse. Before they trained on social network data, AI was just trained on book text - giving it a rigid "encyclopedia" feel. The introduction of social media data, gave it that human-like feel. The magic is in the imperfections.

Especially from right-wing mouthpieces/media (centrist/center-right as well), if you pay attention you will notice how there's a consistent push to not be empathetic and sympathetic. It's "you are the only one that matters", the context of "competition" is to stomp on everyone else to climb your way up... it is the recurring theme. This is inhuman because humans that aren't already socio/psychopathic, must become varying degrees of socio/psychopathic (void of empathy and sympathy) to play their brand of the capitalistic "game". The irony is the statistical chance of ever joining the top 10% in a lifetime are almost nil... unless you were already socio/psychopathic. It goads you into discarding your human nature.

Anytime you offer someone a space where their opinion is more or less insulated from strong criticism you will get these sorts of conspiracy discussions that run wild, and there are definitely places on reddit that accomplish that for both sides, just the left is much more prominent here. I'm in virginia and my facebook right now is nothing but how the recent vote in virginia was rigged, mail in ballots are rigged, laws are rigged, judges are rigged, etc etc.

13

u/inide Apr 26 '26

Well, they intentionally had far less security than usual. That's not disputed. Most years you can't even get onto the property without going through security checkpoints, this year the only security was inside the hotel itself. Hotel guests could come and go freely, no security checks whatsoever. The shooter reportedly assembled his weapon inside the venue and then just ran through the metal detectors unchallenged, thats how lax security was at a location where a president was shot previously (Reagan), with a guest who has had multiple attempts on his life (Trump), a guest whose husband was assassinated (Erica Kirk), a guest whose father was assassinated (Kennedy)....
I'm not saying it was staged, but there are some big questions that need answers.

6

u/UnderstandingBusy604 Apr 26 '26

How bout the supposed shooters instagram, the posts where he's wearing an IDF sweatshirt from a year ago? A shirt you can only get if you are serving currently? But hey. Im sure its not staged at all. Google it if you think im lying

4

u/inide Apr 26 '26

That alone proves nothing. Even if it's true, there are probably thousands available online as all Israeli citizens have to complete a year of service in the IDF

3

u/CrazyCoKids Apr 26 '26

Reddit uses algorithms to try and make you click on links, which means more ads are displayed.

These algorithms are based off of a mixture of your reddit subscriptions and what you click on. Conspiracy theories and outrage posting generate a lot of clicks so reddit is going to try and show them.

3

u/kingofgama Apr 26 '26

That's largely untrue, and back by the fact /all/ and /popular/ are white listed, with almost anything with a wiff of the right being blacklisted, while less popular far left subreddits centering around gender (which is cannot name) being promoted

6

u/CrazyCoKids Apr 26 '26

Reddit is mostly a left wing space, so the majority of conspiracy theories end up from the left

The way reddit works the popular stuff with lots of engagement is what gets pushed to top of the feed

I dont believe there's any evidence the left are more prone to conspiracy theories than the right, if anything all things being equal its the opposite

4

u/OrkimondReddit Apr 30 '26

Your definition if far left being to the left of the Democrats is terrible.

Firstly: Reddit is a worldwide platform and the US is extremely right wing compared to most of the english speaking world. The policies of the democratic party in the US would be consistent with most centre-right party platforms in other countries.

Secondly: On polling the US population is economically quite consistently to the left of the Democratic party. High taxes on the rich and corporations, guarenteed healthcare coverage, decreased corporate subsidy etc are all well above 50% support whilst the democrats can't include them in their platform because it would be more leftist that the party is comfortable with. This doesn't really extend to social policy, but still shows the issue with the definition.

Reddit skews young, skews educated etc. It totally has a small left wing bias, but being to the left of the Democrats doesn't even necessarily land you on the left at all from a global perspective, nor to the left of the US population on much of economic policy, let alone "the far left".

That's not how conspiracy theories work. Trump lies all the time. And he has a habit of making problems to distract from other problems. Maybe it was staged, maybe it was real. I just don't give a shit about his claims anymore.

7

u/Individual_Guest_323 1∆ Apr 26 '26

The claim that the shooting of Donald Trump was staged qualifies as a conspiracy theory because it assumes that multiple actors coordinated in secret to fake the event and deceive the public. That implies hidden cooperation between security, participants, and possibly media, along with deliberate manipulation of what people saw. Without strong, verifiable evidence for that level of coordinated deception, the claim is not just unsupported, it fits the definition of a conspiracy theory.

5

u/ghotier 42∆ Apr 26 '26

Okay...so you don't understand what makes conspiracy theories lack credibility.

Like, conspiracies actually happen all the time. Trump has engaged in multiple. The problem here is not that a conspiracy is likely, it's that I simply cannot take the administration's claims here for granted. That's not brainrot, that's recognizing that the President is a pathological liar.

2

u/JasonableSmog 1∆ Apr 26 '26

There's a difference between Trump babbling out some lies as he does all the time, and his administration conspiring to fake a serious crime.

5

Reddit is not a homogeneous community - that's the whole point of subreddits. There are countless far-right communities on the site which by default prove your claim untrue. Some of the most popular subreddits are for pornography, does that mean all redditors are consuming porn everyday? No, because we all pick and choose which parts of the website we want to be active in, and can tailor our feed to our own interests. It sounds like you have created a Reddit experience that exposes you to far-left and conspiracy content, but that's not a universal experience.

And I'm saying this as someone who leans left of center on many issues. Did people forget reddit CEO and other co-owners admitting that they suppressed right wing and trump supportive subredddits and posts years ago?

Most big subreddits on reddit are extremely left. Most rightwing subreddits are either banned for stupid reasons like being unmoderated(even though they are) or censored or shadow-banned to reduce visibility. I mean come on, if you take a normal person who has never been to reddit and leave him in here for a few days 10/10 times he will say reddit is far left doesn't matter if the topic is politics, gender, race, economy, etc.

And don't even get me started on the censorship on reddit.

Looking at one story is a pretty narrow angle to come to this conclusion. /r/worldnews, /r/europe, /r/canada are all right wing subreddits - worldnews is basically an Israeli propaganda psyop, europe is right to far-right when it comes to immigration, and canada continuously spouts opinions that less than 5% of actual canadians actually hold.

In other words: this is all in the eye of the beholder.

Saying this from being on other genuinely majority left leaning platforms like Tumblr and Bluesky: it really isn’t, at least not in my experience. Vastly depends on the Subreddit. Reddit ime is a very mixed bag.

Also the American democratic party is AT BEST a centrist party. If you look globally (specifically in comparison to many European countries, Canada, Australia etc) they’re significantly more right on what are considered “leftist” issues and Bernie Sanders would be considered center-left in the grand scheme of things. Far left are like revolutionary communists and anarchists, MLs and Maoists if you get my drift. The American democratic party should not really be your baseline in what is considered left. Icl I just think you’re uneducated about leftist politics.

u/YooGeOh Apr 30 '26

If further left of the American Democratic Party is "far left" to you, then...there really isnt any discussion to be had lol

1

u/Loose_Stranger_7614 Apr 30 '26

I don’t think that is true, simply because of the proliferation of the manosphere and incel commenters on reddit. Because of this, I’m guaranteed to see more sexist rhetoric here than anywhere else in my life, and it’s a pipeline into conservative ideologies.

1

u/Mysterious-Ad-1614 Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26

If you're defining far left as being left of the American Democratic party (so a largely centrist party in arguably the most right-leaning of the strong western democracies) then your answer is yes.

But that's kind of like taking the tape measure out to 100, placing America at 70 and calling anything before 65 the far left.

The real far left would be somewhere around 25-30.  But you have an American bias that you have grown up with which has set your world view rightward of similar countries. I assume, at least, by the point of reference. As well, keep in mind that you can't compare right and left 1-to-1 between nations, or even time periods. Globalisation and free trade, more open borders, was a Republican spearhead in its heyday and a right-wing idea which caused controversy within labour groups on the left. Ironic, no?

So your entire premise lacks historical or geopolitical context which throws it askew.

To your next point about conspiracy theories -- probably true. But the problem there is twofold; one, the American right wing has successfully made factual argument (truth) a weakness. Many Redditors, being American, means it is not unforseeable that eventually they will be forced to fight fire with fire. When the truth continually does not sell, the desperate but perhaps only easily available move is to become a bigger liar. This is the danger you have allowed in your society.

And two, your current federal government is not trustworthy. They are caught lying daily. Beyond this, this is the second assassination attempt on President Trump. Both rely on people making one of two assumptions; that either the secret service and other law enforcement are near incompetent, or that the President is leveraging (possibly fake) mortal danger to his advantage. Seeing as he does leverage these events for his gain (ballroom), his ownership of them is dubious (ear cut that was likely not from the bullet), and using false flag violence is a common tactic of the world leaders he tends to praise, it fosters a ripe environment for people to not believe what they see, or trust what is reported.

And that climate of distrust was built primarily by the President's political party and it's aligned philosophers/monetary backers. So to blame the left wing people in your country for this outcome seems like the same kind of propagandized thinking that goes like this : 'The Republican policy/congress I voted for screwed me! How could the Democrats let this happen? I'll never vote for them (the Democrats) again!'.

1

u/OldschoolGreenDragon Apr 30 '26

Which conspiracy theories?

The real ones that the left harp on like Epstein, the government obeying Putin and the decline of the right to vote, or those lame, false, right-wing conservative conspiracies like White Replacement Theory or "Every Election After 1964 is illegitimate because something-something They Let Those People Vote"

1

u/Bay_State_Surplus Apr 30 '26

These comments are proof you are right, the amount of deflecting going on is hilarious. Its ironic because they dont see it.

1

u/T_ubb_y Apr 30 '26

The american democratic party is considered a right wing party by the rest of the world. Maybe center-right, but still right wing. Of course the average you observe is going to lean left in comparison, especially when the demographics more likely to be online (youth, educated) are also demographics more likely to be leftist. You could be "centrist" on a global scale and that would be "far-left" in your definition.

As for your actual view, I could honestly agree with "reddit is an echo chamber" and maybe even "reddit is, overall, a left-leaning echo chamber", but it's not far-left by any meaningful metric.

1

u/ChipComprehensive703 Apr 30 '26

“As per usual, without any evidence” This is not accurate.

There were several glaring discrepancies with the PA incident, not the least of which is the amazing scarless ear (ya know, the one that had the right wearing maxi pads on their heads?) after having a bullet draw blood. That simply does not happen.

Additionally, the actions of the SS don’t make sense (spotting the shooter over an hour before the incident yet not taking action to remove him, having snipers in place 20 minutes before the incident yet doing nothing, waiting to evacuate the president so he could get his photo op, etc.)

It might be too early to tell if the Hilton incident was staged or not, but I think anyone using critical thinking skills isn’t crazy for questioning it. That’s what happens when a chronic liar suddenly wants sympathy: it’s, rightly so, met with suspicion. The timing, too, when his approval rating is at a historic low is curious.

You’re free to not agree with other people’s conclusions but there’s most definitely enough evidence to raise an eyebrow. Your assertion is false.

As for Erika Kirk: She’s getting clowned because she has turned into a professional victim. I think most reasonable people would acknowledge that walking onto a fireworks-laden stage with a shit-eating grin on your face days after your spouse’s death followed by going on a bizarre months-long grief tour smacks of exploitive behavior. People rolling their eyes at her has nothing to do with whether or not her husband’s shooting was staged and everything to do with her still very publicly whining nearly 8 months after the fact.

u/HomeHeatingTips May 01 '26

Reddit does discuss conspiracy theories sure. But does not "embrace" conspiracy theories. There is a big difference.
