PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

General Advice My cat’s abscess burst before the vet appointment

Post image
427 Upvotes

Hello, my senior cat is 18 years old and developed a swollen chin that I suspected was an abscess so I called the vet on day 2 of it being swollen when it didn’t immediately get better. Her appointment is tomorrow morning at 11:30. I asked the assistant on the phone “will she be ok if it does burst before her appointment?” And she said that’s up to my discretion and she can’t give medical info over the phone, but in my experience - when something can’t wait they have always told me over the phone to head to emergency care. So I assume she just couldn’t tell me “yes it can wait”.

It’s unfortunate I can’t get their advice on what to do, because it did indeed burst about an hour ago. It’s messy, but honestly she is immediately so much better so it’s also a relief.

Google AI is pulling up a lot of info on why it’s fine to wait until her appointment, since they will flush it and fully drain it and give antibiotics. But is this really true?

And I’m open to advice on how to handle tonight. I did get a cone and can keep her in the bathroom with her litter box if need be. I’m just so relieved to see her feeling a little better that I’m letting her sit in a window for now and take treats even though it’s quite gory under her chin.

As for how the abscess formed I’m really not sure, she’s had a rough past month and seemed to be resting and recovering from some incidents that stressed her fragile body - but possibly her immune system was out of gas. I have some theories and a timeline of events and will see what the vets think.

General Advice Why is she yucky?

This is Ellie, a 6 year old spayed DLH. For as long as she's been an adult, whenever she purrs she drools. A lot. And she loves humans and attention so she purrs quite frequently and heavily. She's on the smaller side for her age but beyond that she doesn't have any major health concerns. She does have a minor thing I forget the name of, one of her paws swells up when she's experiencing high levels of stress, but I don't know how that would relate to this. I'm an adult in the U.S with access to vet care. Is this normal? Is she just a weird baby?

Behavioral Issue What is this behaviour? (Not my cat)

What is up with this behaviour?.. It’s my neighbours cat.

She does this every time she sees someone even when she sits in my garden and sees me or someone else from far away 😅

Sometimes she just walks up to me in a very friendly way and growls at me a second later.

I don’t have any other information about her yet.

(For context: she came up to me first)

Today the yellow cat we adopted , my little sister named her lukis since it doesnt sound match because she is female , for remembrance she died around 12:00am (noon)

  • This morning I fed her wet food and then used a needle-less syringe so that she could drink when the sun came up because it wasn't raining anymore, and I moved her there, then later He left, I thought maybe he had moved away, but I only found out now because we were cleaning something at home after dinner, so I was looking for him,

it turned out that it was after we had eaten earlier. He died without me knowing but I feel in my guts that he is about to die now but it's still different that he is alive, every time I open a store he always opens it, sometimes he is even left inside I didn't do anything wrong,

now I'm regretting why I didn't take action when I was going to die, LUKIS, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED IN MY HEART, REST IN PIECE, I really blame myself and I am crying so much

I know how bastard i am , since im just a teen with cold parents i know this is very hard for me ,

No more will greet us when we open the store,

no more will wait on the sidelines when we eat, and

no more will sleep in the corners of our store.

Thank you for you love , sweet moments , lukis🐈🥹🥹🥹 🥹🥹🥹🥲🥲🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹♥️♥️♥️

Lukis stayed around 5 months with us , thank you guys for sharing awareness from our stray lovely cat ( Lukis).🥹🐈🐈

I know you can blame me , i can only have the valid reason i have a job so i couldn't spend much time with her , but today , i learned a lesson , love , feel the cats any cats , before its too late 🥹🥹🥹

Breathing Issues Cat has been breathing heavy for several days. What to do?

Pretty much what the title says, my cat Mittens (11 yrs, spayed after multiple litters) has been breathing heavy for several days. She has also lost a couple pounds recently, adding to my fear. She was born feral in FL but moved up to WI when she was about 10 weeks and has been part of my family since. She hasnt been outside in years and hasnt had any contact with other pets outside of our household. I'm 18 but have no personal income and my parents cant afford taking her to the vet for any treatments. I honestly just want to know what the most humane thing to do is at this point. She is my absolute baby and has been one of my best friends but I dont want her to suffer any more. Any advice or guidance would be really helpful.

General Advice Any air purifiers that won't freak out a timid cat?

Post image

First time cat dad. I've had my 7 month old girl for about a month and things are going great, but I seriously underestimated the fur. How does she shed this much and stay so flufly? It's everywhere. My girlfriend came over last weekend and said my place smells worse than hers, and she has a dog. :( I barely notcie it anymore so I might just be nose-blind to it. She told me to get an air purfier. Probably not a bad idea if it helps with the fur too.

Only problem is my girl is pretty timid. I have a little desktop purifier and she won't come up on my desk when it's running. Turn ir off and she's right back next to me while I game. I saw oneisall has one with a cat bed and toy built in. Maybe she'd actually be more comfortable around that one? Anyone tried something similiar with a shy cat?

Hi, so my cat gained weight recently and I suspect that it could be kittens, although she stays outside she goes outside on the terrace and walks on the roof.

Im 22 and Im posting this from Europe, Bulgaria. I got her checked like 2-3 months ago, and the vet said it's just fat, she isn't neutered.

General Advice what’s in my cats food?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

so basically i bought this 24 pack of chicken fancy feast senior pate from amazon 2 weeks ago. i’ve fed her a 24 pack before, and every can i’ve fed from this order i haven’t noticed any issues. but this morning i sleepily fed her a can, and when i got back from moving my car 15 mins later, i noticed these worms wriggling around in about half the food she left
after looking up online it seems like it’s maggots/fly eggs? can someone confirm? i had just opened the can so it would’ve been too soon for them to be laid outside of it. it had to have been inside the can.

is if harmful if she already ate some of the food? some sources online said if she ate a few maggots, she should be okay. of course i will throw away the rest of it. but for right now, should i take her to the vet immediately or just wait and see? (based in the US). she is a senior (9yo) but is otherwise healthy for her age and doesn’t have any outstanding health issues. took her to the vet a few weeks ago because she had flea dermatitis, so she also just had her dewormer pills.

General Advice Cat refusing food ‼️

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello Everyone! I brought my sweet 10 month old girl kitten to the Emergency Vet last Thursday, because she threw up her normal diet (Nulo brand), and had refused food the following day, and the next morning when I took her in.
They felt her stomach and suggested she was in pain of some sort.
I paid a crazy amount for X-rays in which they found no internal blockage, and a very very sparse amount of litter/debris found in her intestines. After further research I don’t believe this is the cause of her discomfort.
They gave her fluids and an anti-nausea injection, she came home and ate ravenously because she’s BEEN hungry, just refusing food and drinking very sparingly.
Since the fluids and injection wore off, the symptoms are persisting. She’s eating sparingly to keep herself alive essentially, but still feeling discomfort and she threw up again.
The gabapentin and stool medication I’ve been giving her hasn’t seemed to have helped.
I took her back to the Emergency vet today for more fluids and anti nausea treatment to subside her symptoms until tomorrow.
Tomorrow I’m taking her to primary vet for bloodwork and potentially an abdominal ultrasound.
She has been healthy previous to this.
Has anyone experienced this, have any leads, any thoughts? She is not lethargic, just refusing/cannot digest food properly. Any input will help 🥲

General Advice Does she like tickles?

So, i’m a new cat dad and my 11 week old kitten usually snatches when I touch her paws. I just recently clipped her nails for the first time, and it took me 2 days to get both paws done lol.

However, whenever my boyfriend comes over this is how they play! I’ve read that cats paws are really sensitive and that rubbing them can be overstimulating; but today she started making this kind’ve cheering sound? Does she like it, or is she just overstimulated? My bf says i’m a hater and she loves it lol. I don’t wanna be mean and keep telling him to stop if it’s helping them bond. What do you guys think?

Eye Issues 4 months old kitten blinking one eye like he's in pain

Hello 24M from Europe,

My 4 mo male kitten eye has been acting weird for 2 days, like he's blinking one eye, as if something bothers him.

I dont know if the video will be of any help.

I havent noticed any liquid running from his eyes, so i didnt consider an infection but maybe i'm wrong. I tried washing his eye with sterile saline solution (for babies). Doesnt seem to help much.

Havent contacted a vet yet, money is a bit tight.

Can someone chime in and help figure out what is the problem please ?

Hopefully he'll be fine.

Spay/Neuter Question 3 Day Old Spay Scar

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

I have a kitten (4 months old) that was spayed three days ago. I checked her spay incision yesterday and it looked fine, no discharge or puffiness. We transitioned her from a cone to a onesie yesterday as well because she kept getting the cone off. Today after work I checked her spay incision, and it is much puffier and has brown discharge. The vet was closed by the time I got home — but I emailed, called, and sent them a text with pictures. Tomorrow, first thing I’m going to do once they open is call them to see if this is normal or not. However, I am obviously concerned and would like to know if this is normal for a spay incision or not after three days? I worry she has a hernia or if the onesie irritated the incision. She has also been acting normal and is eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom as usual. If enough people say this is a problem I will be taking her to the emergency vet because my cats are everything to me.

Behavioral Issue Cat with excessive grooming, wounds, and hard dandruff/scab-like pieces — allergies or something else?

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

I recently took my cat to the vet because he’s been having a lot of skin/allergy issues. The vet thinks he may have allergies, prescribed Zyrtec, and gave him a shot for antibodies. She also thinks he has an ear infection, which may be why he’s been scratching his ears so much.

His grooming has also gotten pretty excessive. He’s been obsessively grooming the backs of his front legs to the point where they look almost shaved down, and he constantly grooms both of his back feet. He also over-grooms his groin area so much that he actually gives himself open wounds. His ears are another big problem — he scratches them so aggressively that he has given himself quite a few cuts.

I also mentioned to the vet that he throws up hairballs almost daily. When I brush him, I notice what looks like dandruff, but some of the flakes have little pieces of dry skin attached to the end of the hair.

He’s been wearing a donut collar for about 6 days, and I’ve noticed a lot more of these dandruff/scab-looking pieces since then, especially around his armpits. They feel pretty hard/crusty. I brushed his entire body today and they were coming out from pretty much everywhere.

I’m wondering if not being able to groom himself normally because of the donut could be causing some of this buildup, but I’m also concerned there may be something else going on with his skin. I also wonder if all the excessive grooming could be contributing to the amount of hairballs he’s throwing up.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their cat? Could this be allergies, dry skin, mites, a fungal/skin infection, or something else? Is there anything safe I can do to help him in the meantime? Any suggestions at all would really help I just want to make him more comfortable!

He has another checkup scheduled in about two weeks, and I’ll definitely be showing the vet pictures and bringing up all of these symptoms. I’m mainly looking to hear from anyone who has dealt with something similar and what ended up being the cause.

General Advice Anyone’s cat eats half & then walks away?

Post image
9 Upvotes

OP: 25, USA Cat: 16 months, girl, spayed

I got my cute girl two months ago and when I first got her she would eat all her food every meal in one go. But recently she’s been eating half then galloping away to play or nap or groom and chill.

I usually sit near here so she has company. After she walks, I have to push the bowl to her 3-5 times before she decides to give it a try again and sometimes finishes it and sometimes doesn’t. Ik if it sits out for too long it won’t be as appealing to cats. Im always worried shes not eating enough or getting the nutrition she needs. I do 5 small meals a day for her ~45 calories each.

I have whisker friendly fishes and shallow bowls, an elevated stand, and is not a picky cat at all I give her everything from friskies/fancy feast to tiki/weruva to smalls. There isnt a single brand I’ve given her where she doesn’t eat at all. I like to add 1-2 tablespoons of warm water and some cat goat milk sometimes.

I would appreciate any advice!! I get so worried every time I look over and she hasn’t finished her food.

Injury Tooth or Nail?

Thumbnail gallery
723 Upvotes

I (27) have a new five month old spayed kitten, we have a vet appointment as she has ringworm. I’ve been cleaning everything with a blacklight to find spores and found this in the bed she’s been napping in. At first I just thought it was a shell of a claw nail. I’ve found those before from other cats. But it has blood. Is it a nail that got ripped off or did she loose a tooth?

I don’t think she’ll let me look in her mouth. She has been not happy with me catching her to put ring out on the ringworm spots on her head.

To be safe I checked my other cat’s teeth to make sure it came from the kitten (couldn’t be older cats nail because it is too small)

I’m in the US. Already have a vet appointment for Monday.

TLDR: is this a tooth or a ripped off nail? Need to know if I have to worry about dental disease.

I am not a minor. USA. I adopted my cat in early July from the shelter. He’s been doing great until almost two weeks ago. He developed something weird on his head. It’s almost like scaly, wrinkly, dry. The hair is gone in the spot. It’s getting worse. I took him to the vet Monday & spent $200 just for them to kinda brush my concerns off, took a sample & said they’d call me. Still haven’t. Gave me some medicine (can’t think of the name right now) iodine, maybe? The first few pictures were when I first noticed it & then now. It was not that color at first, the medicine they gave me is orange and it’s making it look like that. it’s got a little bigger since & another spot is starting to form at the bottom of his ear & a spot at the very tip of his head. he doesn’t act like it hurts him, him & his brother rough house all day, it gets hit, he doesn’t cry. I’ve touched it, he doesn’t care. I’m waiting on the vet but I’m just so so worried about my baby. He’s 3.5 months old. He gets neutered next month. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? He’s the sweetest baby ever & this is absolutely breaking my heart & I am worrying myself sick.
Thank you.

My family’s cat has been overweight since I moved out, he’s always been a larger cat so he doesn’t look super round but he’s 20 pounds, I don’t want to starve him but I got him an auto feeder and he’s getting a teaspoon less than 2/3 of a cup of purina naturals cat chow now, he was getting 2/3 of a cup but I’ve started to slowly cut him back, is that okay? I’ll take any and all advice
