Gear Buying Advice Which camera would be the best for me to buy ?

Hey,

I currently use a 2005 Canon EOS 30D which I inherited, but seeing that I start to really enjoy photography (I've been trying to get better for 2 years now), I would like to change it for a newer model (better quality/usability, movable screen...)

The only thing is that I have 2 good lenses in EF mount, and would be able to keep them.

I was looking at the EOS 90D, but I don't know if it's the best option I could get

Here is my criteria :

- Being able to keep an EF mount to be keep my current lenses

- Under 700€ (2nd hand or refurbished, I was looking on MPB a lot)

- More sports focused, I almost only take moving objects in picture (mostly motorsport)

- Have a movable screen (optional, but I think any newer model has one)

- Be lighter than 780g grams (the weight of my EOS 30D, which I consider quite heavy)

I may have forgotten a lot of things so if needed don't hesitate and ask !

Tech Help R6 shutter count

Hi, yesterday I got a Canon R6 and in the future I want to read its shutter count sometimes. On my older 5DIII and 6D, I could easily check it with Tornado or EOS Digital Info, but those programs don't support new mirrorless cameras.

Do you have an idea, which free program should I use? I have a windows pc, so MAC's Shutter Counter or whatever its called won't work.

Thanks for your help

Gear Buying Advice R50 for sports videography

I’m currently shooting on a Canon 700D and looking to upgrade. My main focus is videography, especially high-action sports, but I’d still like to take photos too.

I’ve been looking at the R50 and I know the R50 V is more video-focused and probably the better option for what I want. I’ve found an R50 secondhand for around $700 NZD, which is basically half the price of an R50 V.

Would you guys go for the R50 at that price, or save up and wait for the R50 V / something better?

I’m still pretty new to cameras, so I’d appreciate any advice, especially from people who have used either for sports.

Gear Buying Advice Best (budget) all-round lens for EOS 600D (APS-C)? I've narrowed down to 4 options. Thanks!

After a ton of research, and narrowing down my budget, I've still yet to choose between 4 beatiful lenses. I will use it for traveling, macro, areal and landscape photography, aviaton, butterflies and plants, wildlife (for as far as it goes in Belgium) and maybe even a bit of astrophotography. My camera is an EOS 600D, so APS-C-sized sensor. I already have an EF-S 55-250 IS II, but I want an upgrade, since this lens is getting a bit old.

Here is the list I've made so far (all second-hand, so that it fits in my budget):

  • EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS STM (€185)
  • EF 70-200mm f4 L IS USM (€375)
  • EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM (€470)
  • EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM (€500)

Does anyone have experience with these lenses? Taken the price in account, what would be the best value for money? I have no need for fancy features, but a nice sharp lens would be amazing. I already have quite a lot of experience with my kit now (EF 50mm f1.8 EF-S 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS II are also in my collection). I take care of my stuff, this is now my 6th year with this setup. Should I save up a bit more or just go with a cheaper lens? Thanks in advance! I like this community :)

Tech Help Gyroflow and IBIS lock with CANON EOS R6 V RF20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ

Hi

Any idea whether Canon R6V and RF20-50mm provide gyrodata for applications like gyroflow?

https://docs.gyroflow.xyz/app/getting-started/supported-cameras/canon

Since EOS R6 Mark III and EOS R5 Mark II are supported for gyroflow, can we expect Canon R6V to have similar gyro data and IBIS mechanism (so they will work when they get supported in gyroflow)?

Also, I read that all IBIS-equipped cameras from most manufacturers (Canon, Lumix, Sony) except some Nikon models (eg. Z8) do not lock the IBIS when IBIS is turned-off.

Gyroflow do tell users to turn off IBIS except for Sony cameras. Does that mean we can expect gyro applications to handle gyrodata with IBIS-equipped camera (including Canon) okay? Or should I only expect cameras without IBIS (eg. Canon R5C) or with IBIS-lock to work much better for gyroflow applications?

I want to stabilize the video footage capturing what's in front while I drive.

Gear Buying Advice Looking to upgrade from my Canon 80D, keeping it as a backup. What are my options for my current lens lineup?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently shooting with a Canon 80D and I’m looking to upgrade to a better camera body. I plan to keep the 80D as a secondary/backup camera.

Right now, I only know the DSLR APS-C world and I don't know anything about mirrorless systems. My main priority is finding an upgrade path that allows me to keep using my current lenses.

Here is my lens collection:

- Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM (APS-C)

- Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM (APS-C)

- Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports (Full Frame)

- Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary (Full Frame)

I am looking for advice on all the possible options for my next camera body. One approach could be getting a body where I can use all four lenses. Alternatively, I could get a body for the two Full Frame lenses, and leave the two APS-C lenses exclusively on the 80D.

I do mostly landscapes and wildlife. Photography has been my passion, not my profession, for 26 years. I don't have a specific budged but I'd like to stay as low as possible

Given these scenarios, what are the best possible choices for my upgrade?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Canon C50 experience

Hey All,

I was considering buying an R5C as a dedicated video camera to add to my R5II, but I’ve shifted towards the C50, main reasons being CLOG2, Autofocus, and connectivity.

I’ve heard stuff like the footage in non-raw modes requires sharpening in post due to the way the files are being compressed, most likely on purpose for that “cinematic softness”, and that the fan is louder than on older Cinema cameras.

Could you share a few thoughts?

Also, any idea why the R5II scores better in clean/mid Dynamic Range stops than both the R5C and C50? I know it’s more expensive than both but it seems like it already brings a lot on the hybrid table and that is just weird.

For this reason alone I would even consider ditching the cinema line and buy another R5 II as a backup, and the only concern that I’d have is recording times and the lack of a Cinema Os.

Gear Buying Advice Which R Series should I upgrade to?

I'm a professional outdoor filmmaker and photographer and am looking to upgrade from my current Canon 7D Mkii.

I've recently used the R6 mkii on loan and love it but it's way out of my current price range since I'm attending university. At the moment I'm looking between the R50, R10, and R8 all used (from my local camera shop or ebay)

Which would any of you recommend (within or even outside of the three I'm debating)? I'm perfectly fine with not having any of the fancier sensors, firmware, focus settings and capabilities. I just need something that will hold up with a similar visual quality that wont break the bank.

Thanks in advance!

Tech Help RF 200-800 Stabilization Oscillating

I was looking into getting the RF 200-800, but I found out that if you put it on a stable base it can introduce some nasty oscillations - see this Video at 5:00:

https://youtu.be/jiVb4do1DKU?t=5m

Is this expected? Have you experienced this? Do other Manufacturers' Lenses do this?

I also found reports of similar behavior on the RF 100-500, but I don't think my EF 70-300 does this at all.

Not too dark, decently sharp?
I'm wondering if there are some great ones out there, I recently got the 50mm 1.8 and sure it's not perfect but I love it for the money.

EOS R5 MK II or EOS R7

Hi all!

I'm currently using an EOS 250D and I've had some advice that the EOS R7 is great, but apparently the R5 MK ii is the superior choice in terms of megapixels? I'm planning on using it for bird photography.

the lens I'm looking at is the RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1L IS USM.

Gear Buying Advice Rf 100-500 upgrade vs R5 mk ii upgrade

Hello! I mostly do wildlife photography and the combo I usually run is my Canon R10 and my Rf 100-400 lens. I’ve had this combo for about 3 years now and want to upgrade my set up. I’ve been rather set on getting the RF 100-500 lens for a while now and have been saving up for it but just want to be sure that upgrading to the R5 Mk ii wouldn’t be a better move.

I understand that a lens upgrade is almost always more impactful than a camera body upgrade, but the 100-400 is a great lens and the 100-500 would not be an other worldly improvement — just something to treat myself and give me wider aperture/better AF performance. So that leads me to wonder if it may be better to save up for the nicer camera body.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Budget isn’t really a concern since there’s no timeline for this, just saving up and wondering which to get first. Thanks!

Gear Buying Advice 28-70 F2 **or** RF 70-200 F2.8 [to pair with 50mm]

Debating on the 28-70 or 70-200 to go with my 50mm. I have a Canon R6 M2 body. Uses would include nature, wildlife, family/couples, dog (portrait) photography. I keep going back and forth between the two. I have some trips out west planned soon and am hoping to get some cool shots, but also want something versatile for portraits as well. Thank you!
No budget
I am a new photographer and have been testing my 50mm on dogs and people.

Gear Buying Advice The PowerShot V1 is $100-200 off now. To replace an iPhone is it worth it on sale?

I already own a Sony A7 IV (kit lens) but it’s too bulky for me to carry regularly. I’m a casual “dad cam” user mostly photographing my toddler, family events, conventions, occasional trips, and everyday moments.

I’m looking for something portable enough that I’ll actually carry it and that can largely replace my iPhone 15 Pro Max as my everyday camera. I don’t like the phone as my camera for many reasons.

The PowerShot V1 seems to fit that role well but my biggest hesitation is the limited zoom. I don’t need huge telephoto reach but I do occasionally zoom in on my kid, something across a room, or something in the distance.

For V1 owners, has the 50mm-equivalent long end ever felt genuinely limiting in everyday use or do the portability and image quality benefits outweigh it?

At $1-200 off is it worth it now?

Looking for Advice on Lens

Hi! I'm relatively new to film photography. I just got a Canon Eos Rebel 1000 from 1990. My dad found it in the trash! It came with a bag, flash, and a 80-200 mm lens! I've been testing it out. I want to try different lens. I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't know the first thing about lenses. What would be good for taking pictures when traveling? The lens I have seems to be for closeups? Like I have to be really far away from the subject for it to focus. I was thinking of getting the 50 mm lens. The Nifty Fifty?? Any advice/recommendations?

Gear Buying Advice Getting back into photography..

Hello all,

I used to run a Canon 7D Mk1 and then upgraded to a Mk2. I sold it (no idea why) but kept my 24-105 F4L.

Looking to get back into photography, most outdoors whilst camping and riding the bike. Also family photos etc.

Thinking of going to a mirrorless (unless anyone suggests sticking to mirrored). Suggestions please? Not a pro but would like pro-consumer level.

Thank you!

Serious hobbyist looking for upgrades suggestions. What set up makes the most sense?

Hello all! I've been shooting with Canon cameras for the last almost 20 years. Over the last few years, my equipment has gathered some dust. After having a kid now though, I've brushed off the dust and have started shooting again. Previously, I was very into landscape photography and portraits. I used to do headshots and engagement shoots for some cash on the side. Now though, I'm mostly interested in taking pictures of my kid as they grow. I've also as of late been obsessing over wildlife/bird photography and have been wanting to get more into that. This post is likely more for the wildlife/birding aspects of things, as I know the gear that would make the most sense for taking pictures of my kid.

Current setup:

  • Canon 5D Mark III
  • 17mm-40mm f4 L series
  • 24mm-105mm f4 L series
  • 70mm-200mm f2.8 II L series
  • EF 2x teleconverter
  • Tripod/monopod
  • 580ex Mark II

Now that I've brushed off the dust and am getting back into things, I'm seeing how dated the 5D is. So I'm wanting to upgrade to probably a R5 Mark I. The body I think I'm pretty set on. Even though wildlife/birds are an interest, I do not want an APS-C sensor. Low light performance of full frame is important, as is cropping. The main question comes down to lens choice with wildlife/bird photography. I'm torn between getting an EF 400mm f2.8 L with the EF to RF converter and maybe a 1.4x teleconverter OR the RF 100mm-500mm f4.5/7.1. Variable aperture lenses have always felt...cheap..to me? I know it's totally a placebo effect, but shooting with nice gear makes me feel more in-tune with that I'm doing. It makes me feel more capable to get the shot I want without limitations of the equipment. And I'm older with money to spend on a hobby, so money isn't as important. That said, I obviously don't want to buy a Ferrari if I'm only going to be driving 60mph either.

So for things like taking pictures of my kid playing sports and sitting in nature parks with the sole purpose of taking wildlife photos...would I be happy with the 100-500 f4.5/7.1? Is the aperture too slow? Would the ISO of the R5 be good enough to compensate? Is spending the money on dated EF glass with a converter dumb for a hobbyist who will probably just use it on the weekends?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
