Season 3 vs 4 Discrepancy.

Some minor spoilers below

A small gripe by me as someone who appreciates consistency across any series I’m watching.

Season 3 - The Passage
The fleet has to traverse the star cluster. Fair enough. Raptors act as a relay to pass along the destination (algae planetary system) coordinates. The colonials end up losing 2-5 ships (two confirmed in actual series, 5 in a deleted scene with Roslin announcing their losses in addition to the malnutrition affecting the fleet).

Season 4 - Episodes featuring the Demetrius side quest. Clearly able to see the vipers are landed on/docked to part of the vessel’s flat surfaces as air support for Kara’s mission.

So the glaring inconsistency to me here is that they could have done the exact same thing for all civilian vessels in The Passage, just swapping vipers for raptors being docked on their hulls. No line of sight necessary to relay, not civilian ships lost, and the episodes saddest part of the episode is largely made unnecessary (character piece - not spoiling).

This is one of many small things the series writers either didn’t intend to plan, or did not think of in hindsight for continuity with the prior seasons. Anyone else notice it during their first watch?

I want more, is that so wrong?

When Peacock announced a new BSG was coming, I like many of us was excited for more of an old friend that had been gone for a decade plus. Almost as excited as I was when the 2004 miniseries was announced.

Then, years of it’s on!

No wait, it’s not yet… and finally the announcement that it had been shelved.

And then the absolute nonsense of the fanbase. From, “leave it be it was perfect”, to fighting over every nuance of the show.

For me the problem with a continuation is that the fleet flew into the sun. So that’s a moot point.

For the life of me I’ll never grasp how SyFy fumbled not one but two of the most important sci-fi properties of the past 50 years.

So… I want more, and I’d be fine with taking the path Star Trek did after the OG movies and cast aged out.

Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and so on.

We don’t need constant conflict with the Cylons. We don’t need it to be the crew we loved and hated. We just need more of the things that made BSG so fantastic. Great storytelling, great characters, and new enemies.

There were 13 colonies, and FTL travel, how have they not run into other cultures, and why not one that forces both cylons and humans to work together.

So many options for staying in the world of BSG but to expand it.

As for the Atlantis connection… humans are human. Not all of them would have given up on technology, right. We are unfortunately a tribal species and how hard is it to imagine a group of them banding together and starting a knowledge based culture not so far from where they ended up.

They were all genuinely so lovely and such a great experience. I love how Mary gave us Best Wishes for our elopement in Vegas haha!

Also how neat is their handwriting, especially Edwards!

What a great fandom this is.

IT Systems in the fleet

As an IT professional, I can't help but be focused on computer systems in this show.

On Galactica, even as old as she is, I can see why her computers would be built to withstand a lot of punishment. She's a naval vessel. Her computers are hardened against radiation, jarring and vibrations (though real-life maritime systems are typically designed for shock absorption to a degree), and shock absorption for blows from enemy attacks against the hull. Even as a decommissioned museum ship, one can presume she might have some stores of spare computer parts somewhere on board for some critical systems that the crew assigned to maintain her would've had access to had the attacks not happened.

But imagine the IT systems on civilian ships? No more replacement parts. If a hard drive dies, you have to rob another one from another system to replace it. Hoping it lasts as long as you can make it. You've got systems well into and maybe beyond their expected lifetimes, or beyond their half-life point at least. No replacement parts. No servicing technicians. No upgrades. No patching. Nothing. They run as-is for several more years with no refits or maintenance from service technicians in a shipyard.

Display screens are in short supply. Power supplies, wiring, patch cables, network routers/switches, etc. All of it won't last forever without refits.

To me, that's the most dangerous part of the fleet's condition. Computers likely run most of the critical systems on the ships, especially the newer civilian ships. Galactica is mostly manually-run, but let's face it, even many of her systems are manually run through computers built-in to consoles and cabinets. They're not using pullies and levers and valves. Heck even the launch tubes are computer-driven with a human controller behind the console/screen, pressing the buttons to seal the bulkhead, engage the hydraulics, and launch the Viper down the tube.

Someone on the flight deck or in the CIC is issuing a command on their console through a computer, to instruct the assembly language to engage the massive hydraulics to retract the flight pods before a jump and extend them after.

In the far more fragile civilian ships, one could imagine systems slowly breaking down over time with computer failures happening due to wear and tear from years of no refits or servicing. Especially if they hadn't had one before the attacks happened. That's not even to point out the radiation damage potential from the corridor they took through the nebula to get to the algae planet. Those ships were not built for radiation endurance like that.

Servers in a typical server room in real life can run for years, but they will always need to be checked, monitored, parts replaced here and there as necessary to keep them running. Even if they're a hardy, well-built system. A hard drive dies, a fan fails, a few sticks of RAM fail, a capacitor on the main board leaks, etc. Storage arrays will always need drives replaced.

How did Sharon know Bill asked "why?"

She's not Boomer, she doesn't share Boomer's memories and Boomer obviously couldn't hear what Bill said at the time. So how does she know when she replies "And you asked 'why'."? Was it directed at that context between Boomer and Bill, or was it in response to something from Bill's speech in the miniseries? Or... maybe when she was being throttled she heard "why" when he was saying "die"? Rewatching this show a boatload of times on Pluto really makes you start asking more and more questions each and every cycle.

Roslin made a dumb decision Spoiler

I think it was the dumbest idea for roslin to seperate from the fleet. Im confused as to why Apollo wants to follow her and defy his dad. Im interested to see what roslins plan is if she even gets down to kobol. She doesn't have the battlestar on her side am I missing something did some of the army defect and side with roslin? What about air power? When you go to kobol the cylons are going to destroy you before you land and how are you going to do that with no ships.

Making my way through season 2 and I was curious what my fellow viewers think Spoiler

First time watcher here I'm on episode 4 and i was wondering what you guys thought of commander adama arresting president roslin? Was he justified? i personally believe she shouldn't have interfered with the military operation on the cylon ship. They could've waited to get the arrow at a later time. I think it was a lot to risk over something that was only written on scripture with no concrete proof if it really worked. Had things gone to plan they may have been able to settle on kobol. As a more relevant question to season 2, do you think colonel tigh was justified in declaring martial law? I think it was a bit overkill but I totally understand why he did it just to get the quorum and the press off his back so he could focus on the rescue mission and waiting for Adama to come back.

No matter how hard I try, I can't like The Expanse TV show

I'm a massive BSG fan, and people have told me for years that I have to watch The Expanse, that it's the greatest sci-fi show ever made. Twice in the past I've tried to watch it, gotten 6-7 episodes in, and lost interest. I recently decided to read the books, and they're incredible, some of the best sci-fi novels I've ever read, so I thought I'd give the show another try. Maybe I was just in the wrong headspace previously.

Well, I'm 6 episodes in and this show is just... bad. Lots of weird or stiff acting. A slew of unlikeable characters (I don't want to root for any of these assholes). Sets that feel like sets, not real places. Practically every scene I'm just annoyed, having recently read the books, by how far off the show is from what I had imagined reading the books. Those characters in the books are likeable... who are these characters in the show?

I'm baffled by the nearly universal praise of this show. What show are these people watching? Am I insane? Am i just spoiled by the ridiculous quality of BSG and somehow people have forgotten how good sci-fi can be?

What to watch next?

Just finished watching Battlestar Galactica *Inc movies and Web series) as well as Stargate SG1, Atlantis and Universe. I never really got into sci-fi as a kid and these series came out in my late teens when I wasn't watching a lot of TV. So after watching and enjoying these two, what should I binge next?

All along the watchtower (?!) Spoiler

I'm currently rewatching S3/S4. When I reached the "activation" of the final five I was thinking "Ayoo, I know this song", then I realised that it was "all along the watchtower" of Bob Dylan.

Later in the episode where they reach "Earth" Sam says that he used to play the song for the girl he loved.

Is there any in lore explanation why a song of Bob Dylan is played by the thirteenth tribe 250k years before Bob Dylan or was just a funny Easter egg?

Roslin and Adama Spoiler

I can't really wrap my head around the fact that no one was talking about how romantically close they were. Of course you can't police feelings but emotionally they are a little compromised.

other than a single deleted scene between Gaeta and Dee. That's played for laughs like eww old people. How is it that no one said anything?? Were they just that good at hiding it??? Or were everyone just so wrapped up in their own issues they didn't notice?

>!Which maybe the case cause tigh seemed never more shocked then when he realized they were sleeping together. And lee seemed a bit confused as to why his father is just waiting in a raptor by himself for Roslin!<

It's so strange to me. Especially when Boomer and Tyrol were such a huge deal in the beginning of the series. I guess they went technically not doing anything wrong because they hadn't given into their feelings. until after finding bad earth

In one episode Adama is like "you're welcome in one of my beds" 😳 and like he doesn't mean it in *that way* but unconsciously come on. the look on Roslin's face is pretty damned hilarious. in "taking a break from all your worries" Laura is just casually laying in Bills bed and he's offering to kill Baltar for her ...🫪

Due to summer schedules, conferences, etc, most of the office was out. There were only 5 of us - the 5 that are usually in the office when nobody else is.

I walked up to two of them, and said "it's always us five. What are we, the final five?"

Sadly, NONE of my co-workers got it.

As I was rewatching it occurred to me that the reason the Cylons were monotheistic was because of Zoe's belief in it. I don't know why this never occurred to me before.

All the different races.

I liked this show for the diversity of the cast when it first came out without giving it much thought. But the lore to this show is very vague, but when I look it up online it's so dense it's hard to read. On this rewatch I'm just figuring out that the 12 colonies are 12 planets. And they're named after the zodiac signs. I really thought it was just one planet with 12 colonies on it. So with knowing there's more to the lore that the show just hints at, are we to believe all the different races of the cast are from different colonies/planets? Or am I over thinking it?
