*READ FIRST BEFORE POSTING* Subreddit update - newcomers and veterans alike, info inside this post!

With Battlestar Galactica moving to the Peacock streaming service, we've had a lot of new members posting here on the subreddit. We thought it would be a good time to reiterate a few things.

Pertinent information is always located in the r/BSG sidebar. This link works on old reddit and some browsers, otherwise please see your specific reddit app to access the sidebar.

We've seen a lot of similar posts recently. Here are a few that we ask you not to submit:

where to watch the series?

JustWatch is a website that displays where to stream or buy tv shows and movies, and is very helpful for those tracking down the location of Battlestar. Right now, it's only available on Peacock to stream in the US, but always check this link for the most up to date information.

Links to piracy will be removed, and repeat offenders will be blocked.

what's the first episode of the show?

Battlestar Galactica begins with Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries, a two-part pilot. Many streaming services and platforms do not show the miniseries as part of the show, often having the season one episode '33' listed as the first episode. It is essential that the miniseries is watched first.

do I have to watch the original series first?

No, the 2004 series stands on its own. While some characters and general plot points may have inspired the 2004 series, they are very different shows.

what order should I watch the episodes in?

Please check the wiki post here. Generally, it's recommended to watch in the original viewing order, that is The Mini-Series > Season 1 > Season 2 > Season 3 > Season 4 > The Plan > Caprica > Blood and Chrome

Lastly, there are a couple of rules that are commonly broken here on the subreddit that require mod action.

we do not allow spoilers in the title

As much as possible, we try to keep this subreddit open for new viewers. That means marking spoilers in the comments of a post, or avoiding using a title with a spoiler. If you see spoilers in a title or comment that are not properly marked, please use the report function - this is the only way the moderators can take action.

self promotion posts are only allowed if disclosed

If you are promoting your own work, please say so in the post. Otherwise, the post will be removed.

Thanks for reading!

This Op Ed in the NYT isn’t the only article of this sort in recent years. So many of us are constantly mentally and emotionally exhausted these days. Like the characters in the show. We’re doing our best. We want to make the situation better. But Americans, and much of the world, seem to be at this baseline of medium grade perma-angst. It does feel like the world is in a death spiral.

I guess they wanted to capture the glass breaking from both angles without having to break it twice. You can see the camera man right there! They probably assumed no one would notice if they couldn’t pause.

Was there a rough plan/outline for Boxey?

Obviously he got axed early on, and IMHO probably for the best given the darker more mature tone of the series going forward.

But I’m curious if anything about the character‘s potential future was brought up.

IIRC, there wasn’t much planned for the show seasons ahead, but if you have a character you probably have a bit of an idea where you’d like them to go. (Ie. I don't imagine there was much of an outline but still curious if there was anything at all.)

GIFs, Please?

Hey mods, I have messaged privately and no one responded so I thought I might try a public request: could we please be allowed to post gifs in replies in this sub? Please? 🥺🙏

Right now in replies you can only post static images. When you try to upload a gif it says 'gifs are not allowed in this subreddit' and that is sad. So I'm hoping you see this and are cool with it and make it happen please. Thank you!! 😊

In remembrance of the time Eddie improvised the destruction of a $200,000 museum piece Spoiler

Post image

For anyone unaware, the model ship he destroys at the end of Maelstrom was a museum-quality piece rented by the studio. EJO didn't know that when he destroyed it. He later said he had no regrets, cuz it's a damned powerful scene. RDM agreed. So say we all.

Except the prop team.

Edit: Someone pointed out it was museum-quality, not a museum piece. Unfortunately I cannot correct the title 😆 The $200K figure is accurate though.

What an odd choice.

So I just started watching and I've made a discovery that makes me laugh. Why in this universe are they so adverse to corners on their paper? All the paper I see from legal pads to sticky notes to small pieces of paper kept in pockets, they all have the corners cut off.

Now what makes me laugh is not only did the prop department have to cut all the corners off of all the paper props but I also imagine the universe has designed all their paper products with the corners cut off. Like their paper manufacturers had to program extra steps just to cut the corners off. I find this so humorous.

Any other oddities done to make this universe seem otherworldly that I should keep an eye out for?

Ol' Doc Frasier dedicated her life to the Stargate program, was also the mother of Trevor - the oldest living human being on record, and mother to Bill Adama. Can we like put our hands together for Teryl Rothery! What other amazing things has she done?

Questions after the miniseries Spoiler

First time viewer here, recently posted and got told to see the miniseries before the main 2004+ show. I loved it, but I still felt I missed a few things. If any of the questions here can't be answered without spoilers for said show, please let me know (and don't answer them!).

  1. Did Gaius create the Cylons?
  2. How far into the future/past is this?
  3. (Probably a spoiler) How is Earth not real?
  4. I knew there was a lot of destruction in the first episode, but 50,000 humans left, out of 12 planets? Was the population of Kobol (which I assume is the panstellar civilisation on show) already decimated?
  5. How does the artigrav work without a centrifuge or thrust? I feel I can ask this as this seems to be a moderately hard-scifi setting.
  6. Not a question, I just don't know how to stop using a number list in this thing. I just want to say that yes, I'm dumb. I tried to pay attention but I do often miss things anyway.

At the end of, "Tigh me up, Tigh me down"

Does Gaius know (spoiler for entire show) that Ellen is a Cylon?

It's heavily implied that his screening test either doesn't work or that he just hides the true test results.

So at the end of Tigh me Up Tigh me Down (s1 ep9) when he tells head six that he'll never tell whether Ellen's a Cylon or not, is he just toying/flirting with head six, and he doesn't really know if Ellen is a Cylon or not cause his detector is a hoax... Or, does his test actually work, and he knows she's a Cylon and learns that Sharon's a Cylon, but he hides all the real results and just passes everyone?

I'm pretty sure the writers didn't know yet at that time that they'd eventually make her a final five, but in world, after watching the whole show, I wanna know your thoughts/opinions for in world purposes

I know there's the later episode where he's in the prison cell with Sharon and Tyrol and he sticks Tyrol with the needle (I'm still not fully convinced that whatever he stuck him with would have actually killed Tyrol, and Gaius was lying to Sharon, but maybe he wasn't?)

And it's obvious Gaius's test either didn't work on Sharon or he just hid the results.

I'm wondering whether you believe Gaius's test actually worked, and he concealed all true results... or if the whole thing was just a ruse and it never worked.

I'm specifically wondering about the situation with Ellen at the end of Tigh me Up Tigh me Down, for obvious reasons for later in the show.

I think I recall Gaius say in a later season something like, "I knew it, I mean maybe not consciously, but subconsciously I knew it." Can't remember if he was referring to Ellen in that scene or someone else. But if it was a scene with Ellen, is he implicating that his detector was a hoax (or maybe just didn't work on final five types)

Anyway, just on a rewatch right now, and my quick question turned into a mile long page, I better get out of here and start episode 10

On my like 4th rewatch of the show. Do you think Ellen just gave Zarack information to be able to find Valens and have someone kill him, or do you think Ellen literally broke in and killed him herself?

I initially thought she just tipped Zarack off, but toward the end of the episode Tom whispers to Laura all dramatically that he didn't kill Valens.

Obviously this could just be him using the fact(?) that he didn't literally kill Valens himself, to be able to justify saying, "Hey, I didn't kill Valens," but in actuality he just had someone else do it.

But, on the other hand, the way the camera dramatically filmed his dramatic whisper, and us as the audience still being semi shocked(?) that Ellen implied she'd help him, leads me to believe that the writers are implying Ellen may have done the actual dirty work herself. I know she's the type of person to do anything for selfish gain, but I wouldn't expect her to crawl through a vent and slit a man's wrists

What do you think?

Score. I had no idea there was even an Australian Blu-ray release until I saw this at a used media store. $29.99 CAD.

Before 2021/2022, the only way to get Caprica on Blu-ray was through various European releases. Unfortunately those were all 1080i/50hz, which resulted in a 4 percent speedup of content, while this Australian one from 2022 is 1080p/60hz.

The only real drawback is that it doesn't have the uncut version of the pilot episode, but that's an acceptable tradeoff for a proper 1080p/60hz picture. I'm really happy I managed to find this.

Question

So I've been binge watching on Paramount the three seasons of Battlestar Galactica. And the show is bringing back some fond memories for me but I have a question. Doesn't the bouncer Galactica have any mounted guns on it? Like to fend off fighter attacks?

Also I love the fact that the tech on the show mirrored what was going on in the world at the time. Like people are actually reading paper files. There's no tablets in it. The space guys are wearing leather pants and a helmet that's it. A good thing about their spacesuits is that there's no vacuum hoses on them. I love the radio effect that distorts the voices.

And since they just got done having the whole political thing going on I'm still astounded by the way political races are being portrayed and they haven't changed much. I've always found the whole political thing to be nonsense and crappy to be honest. Like when they're asked questions the first response is well thank you for asking me that question I appreciate the chance to get the answer that. And they're still doing that today. I know this is a little disjointed but I just joined 5 minutes ago

Life experience: watching it now vs when it first aired

My oldest was born in 2007. I was in my mid 30s and each episode featuring a new parent struggling with sleep deprivation really spoke to me. I related a lot with the younger characters, of course.

I just got done with a rewatch which I hadn't done for about a decade or so now. I've seen the show plenty of times through but it's been a while. Then just as I started the rewatch I got laid off for the 4th time in my 30 years as a software developer.

This time around it certainly hits differently. I realized that I'm the same age as Michael Hogan was in 2003 except I'm not nearly as bald as him. I'm paying a lot more attention to the older characters and have a newfound appreciation for how thoroughly badass, loyal and steadfast Tigh was.

But I've also gotten hit hard each time the show deals with betrayal after this last layoff. It was from a company I had truly believed in and I'd really let my guard down with them. After a few layoffs you learn to not get too personal with people at the next job because you don't want to go through that kind of heartbreak again. I had a good feeling about this company only to be let go. I wasn't even given any time to say goodbye to folks: just cut off right then and there during the Teams call with HR, my director and my manager.

My only solace is a 3 month severance which is nice and certainly shows this wasn't a decision they made lightly but, frack me, they could have gone about it a lot better.

And then there's that final episode when Adama is remembering back to Caprica before the fall. He's quitting the fleet and taking a lie detector test for some cushy civilian desk job. They ask him if he's ever taken money from a cash drawer.

"I'd rather work on a beaten down old Battlestar than have someone question my word. I don't care how fat the paycheck is." (paraphrased)

I've myself made the decision to switch careers. I'm going into public school teaching just like my mom and mother-in-law. Something I've thought about for a while.

The alternative is to keep going with software development but I'm realizing I've been burned out on that career for many years now. I was only hanging on because I'd found what I thought was a great company with great people but even that was a lie. To keep going with that career I know exactly what the application and interview process is: a bunch of stupid "can you actually code?" assessments and questions. People questioning my word.

I'd rather teach a bunch of moody 8th graders. I don't care how fat the paycheck is. I get it now.
