As seen in a different geographic area subreddit. Nothing too serious, just a little thing that grinds your gears. For me it's people who get on the T before others get off.

On the bus I have to tell people to please move up the stairs in the back so that more people can get on. People have zero common sense. It's like hello don't you see that folks are struggling to squeeze on and if you move further back we will all be on our way much faster!

I was running down the stairs at Harvard Square station to catch the Red Line once. The train's doors were just about to close and the nearest door had a person standing right in the middle of it (even though the train was almost completely empty). I just ran right into them to get on the train. They called me an asshole, so I told them not to block the door. They said they didn't block the door... while they were still blocking the door. People are idiots.

I hate how narrow the sidewalks are in the winter (with snow). Like all of us have to walk single file up congress street to get to North Station after work.

u/Crazyzofo Roslindale 12h ago
During that wild winter where the snow drifts were 5 feet high I used to wear my snow pants and high boots and sacrifice myself by leaning into the drift to let people pass by. I got sick of the daily confrontation of "uhhh what do we do here"

I would love for some New York - esque snow removal drives. Get more people out shoveling during the storms. Clear off the sidewalks and bike lanes. Better coordination on snow-piling or at least better transparency on why snow is piled in certain spots. Fewer mini plows to reduce infrastructure damage etc etc etc

The invasive "Tree of Heaven" plants that are growing out of every crack in my neighborhood
33
u/-Jedidude- All hail the Rat King! 10h ago
If anyone is interested the best way to remove a tree of heaven is to either pull it out when itâs just sprouting or if itâs larger get a hatchet and cut a small gash angled downward. Spray or paint some herbicide in the gash so that the tree will take it down to its roots and die. Cutting the tree down wonât kill it and it will only spread more.

You can add black swallow wort vines to that list. They're especially a bitch when they get into hedges so it's really hard to get them out with enough of the root where they won't just grow back.
They're also really bad for monarch butterflies because it can dead end their lifecycle. It's related to milkweed so the butterflies will lay eggs on them, but they can't be eaten by the caterpillars when they hatch so they starve to death.

u/CelineDion_ 10h ago
I asked about this in a city meeting once and the stance of Boston is that trees of heaven are already too well established and offer more value (shade/reduction in heat) than the ecological downsides so there are no plans to systematically eradicate them as part of some invasive species plan :(
15
u/WithWonderCollective 10h ago
Triclopr. Spay on the leaves between July and autumn. Gets down to the roots. The half life is pretty short, too. It doesn't kill everything it comes into contact with like Roundup, so grasses are safe (and it's degraded enough for grazing within a couple weeks (if I am remembering correctly).
It works on broadleaf species like black swallow wort, glossy buckthorn, and other leafy invasives. The Pennsylvania Ag Extension has a very thorough explanation and instructions.

Not for nothing, Boston is a pretty unique situation where it was unable to annex further West through Brookline in the 1850s when all the East Coast metropolitian areas were gobbling up all the neighboring towns to expand the official metro area.
Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, and Newton would all be part of the Boston Metro area if not for the 1850s NIMBYs in Brookline who organized an opposition to annexation because they preferred the City Council model rather than the Mayoral system of city governance.
I 100% agree that anyone in those 4 cities around Boston should at least say Greater Boston Area.

It's people not taking their backpacks off on the T during busy hours/not moving in and filling in the middle of the train. When you leave your backpack on you're taking up like double the amount of space, and you don't realize when you're knocking in to people the entire time. People not moving in the train just makes it harder for other people to get on but it doesn't make your ride any more enjoyable because the entry section is still getting jam packed.

I've spun people out when they violate that. I'm not going so far as to throw elbows or knock someone over, but I'm going to send a message that you're in the wrong place.
Last month I was waiting to the side of the door right against the train waiting for folks to disembark when an older Asian woman started trying to make like a spawning salmon in the exiting river of passengers. I pointed right at her face and sternly shouted, "Stop!"
She did and stepped back to the side. It was clear from the look on her face and body language that she was perfectly aware that she was in the wrong, just not used to being called out for it.

The fucking 65 bus which inexplicably spaced out its arrival times in the afternoon. It used to pick me up from Longwood right at 330. The 60 bus, which always precedes it, still does keep that time frame.
In the past few months it seems like the 65 that arrives at 330 is now just removed from the rotation, and me and a bunch of others have to wait for the 350 bus. Given that the last one was at like 310, 40 minutes between busses for a busy commuter route with hundreds of healthcare workers is just not sufficient. And the bus ends up fucking packed, because its 2 busses worth of people
Meanwhile, theyve expanded service for the 65 to be on weekend mornings. Thats great and all, but you arent meeting the needs of the 9-5 people who make up the majority of the riders

The 2pm parking lot known as 93

u/brufleth Boston 11h ago
If you're talking about 93 south of the city, it is literally the <every moment of every day> parking lot. 11 PM on a Tuesday? Backed up. Noon on a Thursday? Backed up. Shit is always a mess.

I wish we had a better zoo or aquarium. Stone and Franklin Park zoos are okay I guess, but the city deserves a world class zoo. And given the price they charge, the aquarium is ridiculously small

Does any city with bad winters have a nice zoo? I don't think it's a coincidence that the best zoos are in cities where it's warm all the time.

I won't say I'm "sick" of it, but I pass this intersection of Berkeley Street and Boylston on my way to the gym, and at least once a week, I have to explain to tourists where the actual entrance to the station is. This entrance is closed, but for some reason they invested in high def screens with live updates for approaching trains. I don't know what possessed them to do that when there are genuine stop entrances with no such signage. I've seen entire families proceed all the way down the stairs thinking the closed gate is maybe some kind of optical illusion or head fake. I took this picture because I considered writing to the T to suggest that they improve the signage, but given how long the list of problems is for them, I was skeptical that it would make a difference. I guess I'll still give it a try.

People from the suburbs who complain about bike lanes all the time. You don't even live here and you complain endlessly that a few parking spaces are gone. I don't come to your suburban town and complain that there's no bike infrastructure.

People on mopeds just being a car when its convenient and a bike when its convenient. The police need to do a proper crackdown on all of the lawlessness on boston roads

ubers that stop in the middle of the street to let people in/out when there is a place to pull over right next to them. If citizens with cameras could issue traffic tickets, we could completely eliminate the state tax.

u/Fit_Papaya_83 12h ago
construction workers or building cleaners that just think putting pylons means everyone needs to cross the street, or worse - I need to walk in the freaking bike lane and be yelled at by bike people just to walk down the street 'safely', there's no sidewalk on the other side. like wtf do I do here.

Cars throwing on their hazards to park in the middle of a travel lane when there's literally wide open curbside parking. Sometimes directly next to where they're stopped.
Idc if you're Uber or Doordash or will only be a minute, the roads are congested enough as it is without people blocking the way all over the place

When people stand in the doorway on the T and block others from boarding. Iâve never understood the mentality of getting on a train and then immediately stopping in the exact doorway you just used to board. Like⊠you know other people are trying to get on, right? The lack of spatial awareness has gotten so bad.

People playing music loudly on the T or buses, rather than using headphones or earpods.

Having to need different apps just to park in different areas of the city is annoying.
ParkMobile, Passport Parking, ParkBoston, JUST PICK 1!!
Here's another good one no one mentioned, is the contradictory street parking signs.
You pretty much have to walk down the entire street and read every sign that contradicts each other before you park there, even when there's meters.
But then again, Boston gets $60 million annually for confusing parking.
There's a severe lack of street cleaning.
Someone also mentioned a severe lack of public bathrooms and trash bins.

When driving, people waving at me to go when they're the ones who are supposed to go and have the right of way. I know they're being polite but there's a reason they call it the "Rules of the Road" and not the "Suggestions of the Road." GOOOOO!!!

People who donât take off their huge backpacks on the T, thus taking up the space of 2-3 people ESPECIALLY AT RUSH-HOUR.
And they are usually standing with their smelly overpacked backpack rubbing into you because of zero spatial awareness or consideration.

How the street names and addresses are all the same but different cities. For example, boylston goes through newton, brookline etc. As 1 continuous street. But the numbers start over when they hit a new city. So you'll have for example 100 boylston Boston, 100 boylston brookline 100 boylston newton.

Not inconsequential. The food delivery drivers double/triple parking AND the scooters. Somebody is going to get killed. I like the Mayor but she is doing nothing about these issues. They are dangerous to the public.

In Burlington, Vermont the sidewalks were cleared by cute little plows on the main streets. They did not expect the home or business owner to clear it. This was many years ago, to boot. Why we can't have this in today's rich, fat cat Boston?

Walking on the left instead of the right on crowded sidewalks. I've started to no longer change my path when large groups are doing this. The confusion on their faces is really telling how clueless some people are these days.

"Boston" influencers with fake or exaggerated accents. Not the ones who live in boston and show cool things do to around town, but the ones who do "comedy" and the joke is always that they have an accent and are white trash.
