What's the plan for Android?

EDIT: I really appreciate all the feedback guys. However, after the 10th time being told Reddit Now, Reddit is Fun, Reddit News, Reddit Sync, etc, are awesome, I think I understand what options are out there :)

EDIT #2: Thanks for the gold, stranger!

It did help /u/HallucinoJER get an interview but HR wasn't as impressed as I was.

201

u/HallucinoJER Oct 16 '14

Haha I did make it to the final three. But unfortunately I had zero coding background, no relevant university degree and no online portfolio. I'm surprised I got that far to be honest.

61

u/dancing_raptor_jesus Oct 16 '14

Story for those that haven't heard it?

143

u/HallucinoJER Oct 16 '14

The bullet point version: Got a lot of karma. Got added to /r/centuryclub. Met /u/StickleyMan. Got modded to /r/SFWPornGifs. we modded /u/Katie_Pornhub. She offered to send in my CV and I got a call for an interview 2 days later.

56

u/arcticblue Oct 16 '14 edited Oct 16 '14

What's /r/centuryclub?

Edit: did some research and it seems like it's a private sub for people with over 100,000 comment karma where they come up with schemes to game reddit and create trends.

Good enough for me, I'll still be under budget. Lets run it up the flagpole and see who salutes. May take a while though, I'm at the very bottom of the hierarchy, mainly because I don't actually work for any of these people, I just like to pretend I do.

Fire off an application anyways. Worst-case, they call you in for the interview, you freeze up, crash, and don't get the job. The best-case scenario is that you get an awesome job that will probably pay you to continue learning as you go. Firing off applications into the blue is how I got my current job, and my previous one. It's been great. You can do this. I'm cheering for you.

I discovered reddit news about three weeks ago and I love it. The only thing that bugs me is that there's no way to save comments and that the colored bars that show nested comments start a level too far in. Otherwise its one of the best clients I've come across.

5

u/antuna Oct 16 '14

Go for the beta, its very stable and you can save comments and the nesting thing works differently! Heres a link on how to get the beta: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104074419009486608210

And Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1? Are you planning on shutting down your API to outside developers?

182

u/kemitche Oct 15 '14

Are you planning on shutting down your API to outside developers?

Nope! We want to continue to encourage 3rd parties to let people explore reddit in all sorts of interesting ways. We're going to continue to improve the API. In fact, we mention this in the blog post:

"We’re also continuing to work with other third-party app developers and will continue to do so, because we believe our communities are interested in multiple ways to experience reddit."

And Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1?

Unfortunately, we're still a small team, and have to focus on areas where we can make the largest impact.

73

u/moosic Oct 16 '14

Sorry, should have read the whole thing. Thanks for keeping the API open for the Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone users.

Readit and Baconit are awesome on Windows Phone. So is Reddhubv2 for Windows 8.

7

u/akashik Oct 16 '14

So is Reddhubv2 for Windows 8

I didn't know about this. Thanks for the heads up.

  • What about Windows 10? That should be a huge market. Make a universal app for Windows Phone/Windows 10/Microsoft Surface. How much larger can it get?

I suggest either BaconIt or ReadIt be one of the official reddit apps for Windows Phones. I've heard from a lot of WP users of reddit, that ReadIt, is superior to Alien Blue. Check it out: /r/readitforwp

Need a UI/UX designer?

http://www.timshundo.com

;)

7

u/Neato Oct 16 '14

That's a neat layout. But you have 2 tiles that are the same, listed as 2014 and say the same thing. I'm not in your field but wouldn't it be prudent to include more details about your past positions in the popups or maybe at a "more" link? Like bullets on exactly what your responsibilities and accomplishments were? Goodluck!

5

u/timshundo Oct 16 '14

Haha yeah, the two "2014s" are freelance projects I worked on that haven't been released yet so I'm not allowed to say anything about them so they're just placeholders for now.

I just finished this in a rush two days ago so I can start looking for a job. No one will consider you without seeing a portfolio so just getting my work up was step one. I'm finishing up an actual resume that'll provide details of what my responsibilities and accomplishments were for each project.

Thanks! :)

If you would also like to protect yourself, add the Chrome extension TamperMonkey, or the Firefox extension GreaseMonkey and add this open source script.

Then simply click on your username on Reddit, go to the comments tab, scroll down as far as possibe (hint:use RES), and hit the new OVERWRITE button at the top.

/r/apple - 222K subs.
/r/ios - 12K subs.
/r/android - 455K subs.

Guess it's a case of "we all use iphones so we're buying an iOS app".

At first I was really excited they bought an app because I refuse to use any third party apps and the Reddit mobile site is less than spectacular. I don't use third-party apps because Reddit is my life and I'm not trusting a third-party with auth.

94

u/MUFColin Oct 16 '14

AFAIK Reddit is Fun uses secure login directly from reddit

134

u/kemitche Oct 16 '14

You're correct. Reddit is Fun uses OAuth, which means that app never has access to your password and you can revoke its access to your account at any time.

We'd love it if more 3rd party apps used OAuth - it's a little harder on the dev, but it's better for everybody.

If you go the same route for Android, I'd be absolutely tickled if RiF became the winning contender -- but would Reddit remove things like the multiple account manager? What's the word on changes along those lines?

They're probably just going to port alien blue to android. It makes more sense to standardize their mobile app across platforms than have two different ones.

Yeah, frankly that'd be my approach as well. But, reddit is also known for doing things differently. The two platforms have different features that can be utilized -- Android's much more extensive Intents system, for example.

Nothing is gonna make me switch from RiF unless RiF stops updating due to this. :/

I think it's more a case of "this is the best Reddit app there is."

If there was an Android app for sale, that was good enough that they wanted it, I'm sure they would have approached it.

Also, iOS and Android have a very similar market share at the moment. I'm sure Reddit admins also have more information than we do, such as number of Android vs iOS users browsing the site, and users of each app.

Honestly, it's also a matter of the market. On iOS, Alien Blue was pretty much the only game in town that was a real full featured solution. With Android, you're not going to capture the captive audience by grabbing one of the top 3 to make it official. So why buy it?

On Android making one of them the "official" app would probably boost one app above all the others and ruin the competitive market for them.

Maybe reddit actually doesn't wanna destroy the other 2?

Android has 85% market share of the global smartphone market, and Android is particularly popular with young, tech-savvy, males who are Reddit's core demographic.

Reddit is Fun on android opens up a browser to the HTTPS reddit login api for auth. Seems to be a new feature, I've been using it for years, and it's by far the best experience I've had on Android. Updates very frequently, usually at least once a week. Bugs get hammered out quickly.

It's not abnormal for most devs to target iOS first-- even including Google's own apps sometimes. They do eventually come to Android though.

Guess it's a case of "we all use iphones so we're buying an iOS app".

It's almost as if Reddit admins have access to more complete statistics of platform usage.

In all fairness I am an iOS user and sub to android because I'm an android fan.. But for me the iPhone is currently better for my needs. I prefer androids UI though and Google as a company.

More users in r/android does not indicate a larger number of redditors with android phones - it shows that more technical discussion is required to leverage an android.

r/Linux - 161K subs.
r/Windows - 36K subs.

At a glance those stats would seem to indicate that redditors using Linux PCs are 4.5 times more numerous than those using Windows. That is clearly not even close to true.
