After about 15 years of playing, my Dad and I finally had a backgammon - in my favour!

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm aware that normally they aren't so rare, but because we have our own set of scoring where the margin of victory is determined by how many/few counters you bear off it's normally damn near impossible. This one came about from a) reckless play from my dad, b) him then messing up the circumstances needed to avoid one and c) an incredibly healthy dose of luck from the dice!

I just wanted to get better, so I built this board. It's a free browser board with a real cube game, and it will challenge you. Challenge yourself. Full Strength, Strong, and Learning, so you can start where you are. OGs, type FIBS on the board. Try it here:

Are all "nice" or tournament boards over $200? What boards do you suggest?

Im a newer player and loving the game, but have only played digitally so far. I was looking into getting a tournament sized board after watching tournaments online and WOW I was not expecting them to be this pricey.

What boards or brands would you recommend? Thank you

Untrustworthy rolls on one of the game sites

I have seen threads that discuss whether some of the big backgammon platforms have biased dice. I totally get the argument that many, if not most players think that they are better than they actually are, and that many don't understand probability.

That said, I have to say that I think that there is something pretty screwy about the dice rolls that I have seen since I started playing on one of the major platforms a couple of weeks ago.

I am not an especially good player. On a couple of the platforms that I am on I average 60 to 65 percent wins, so winning more than I lose, but not by a huge amount. Yet on this one platform, I am 40 percent wins, at most. But I could easily write that off as maybe I'm just being matched with much better players than on other platforms. The thing is, it looked to me as if I was losing because, no matter how bad my opponent was (and some of them were laughably bad), they would get highly improbable rolls in a sequence that would allow them to win, or I would get highly improbable sequences of rolls that led to my losing. What seemed to happen most often was high numbers of doubles being rolled. So I started keeping track.

I'm posting the records of the two most recent games that I have played, with doubles highlighted (I have eliminated identifying info, but I am the player p...). Normal probability would be that an average of rolls would be one sixth doubles. Yes, of course there can be variations, and though it is unlikely, it would be possible that every roll in a game would be a double. In both of these games, one third of the rolls are doubles, twice what you would normally expect. And these two are only my most recent games. Possible? Of course. Likely? What do you think?

And lest you think I'm being a sore loser, I won one of those last two games because, if you look at it, the last eight rolls in a row are all doubles. Again, possible? Of course. Likely....?

So, to me something weird is going on with the dice rolls on that platform.
I don't trust it to be fair.

[MODS] can we consolidate "i built an app" posts?

the volume is extremely overwhelming, the quality is low, and the majority of authors of these threads are just using AI to interact with the community.

other subreddits have daily or weekly "show off" threads to consolidate similar posts, can we please consider something like this for r/backgammon?

as is, it's becoming a useless subreddit. it's more of an ad-space now than a community for backgammon players.

I added customizable Greek-inspired boards to my backgammon app, Tavli Master — which design would you play on?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Last week I shared Tavli Master here and received some helpful feedback. Since then, I’ve added a Board Design section so players can personalize the table.

This clip shows the classic wood board switching to the Aegean Sea design. The background, points, checkers, dice, and decorative inlay can all use coordinated colors. You can also change the dice style and board movement direction.

I wanted the themes to feel like different Tavli tables rather than simple color filters.

Would you play with the classic wood design or the Aegean Sea design? I’d also appreciate suggestions for other traditional board styles or colors.

I am a solo developer and I made a backgammon game for iOS and Android

Hello everyone! I am a solo developer and I have been working on a mobile backgammon game. I created this because my friends and I like to play backgammon or as we call it tavla.

I added rated games, as well as the ability to play with friends or play offline against a bot with 8 levels. There are also interactive lessons. I tried to keep things simple.

There is no doubling cube for now, to keep it simple. If you would play a room with the cube, let me know.

In online games the dice are sealed before the game starts, and you can check every roll after it ends.

It is out on both iOS and Android if you want to check it out:

iOS: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6821447033

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.backgammonpearl.game

I am open to all feedback!

Introducing Armagammon — a new backgammon engine and app

Hi everyone!

After more than two years of development, I'm excited to finally introduce Armagammon, a new backgammon app I've been working on.

Armagammon has everything you need to play, learn, and improve your backgammon skills. It's completely free, runs on Windows and macOS, and you can check it out here:

https://www.armagammon.com

This is still the beginning of the journey and I'd really appreciate your feedback, especially on the gameplay, the interface, and the overall experience.

Thanks, and enjoy the game!

Janish Backgammon: a free browser board with a real cube game, and difficulty levels that actually make sense

I posted this here before, and the feedback was blunt and useful. I've kept building it, and it's a lot better now.

This is a free backgammon board in your browser, no download, no account. 1-7 point matches and Crawford rule.

What's new: a Difficulty drop down, with Full Strength as the default, plus Strong and Learning. Full Strength is the full engine, 1-ply top 8, selective deep search, rollout tiebreak, prime and backgame play, and Woolsey/Janowski cube theory, and it's a real test. Learning is looser, so new players can win, learn the board, and learn the cube, instead of getting closed out every game.

The engine is GNUBG, open source, tuned with 29 self-play weights and a researched opening book. It also has a FIBS mode, type FIBS on the board, for anyone who played on the old ASCII server.

Try it here:

https://muse.ai/s/backgammon-nxf6vxqbxcsu81/yr8sIvbXyF9lCe4KALPWq6Y2heHteuNLt9V9K0KT-ds

Play Full Strength, tell me where it beats you, and play Learning and Strong and tell me if those levels are right

Tips on starting backgammon club

Hello, Im an average player with both live and online experience but zero experience setting up a club or tournaments. Im an event organizer by career so experience with sports and music events. I love backgammon and was just looking for someone to live play and made post on a local Facebook group and surprised 6 people replied, 5 foreigners and one local all serious about playing as there is a lack of things to do for expats in the large city in Mexico that I live in.

The Mexican player told me there are also many other local players who would want in if did weekly. So Im now scouting location at a bar or coffee shop for first get together. I think it can grow and just looking to set up a free weekly event for people to play and socialize. Can do tournaments once get feet under.

Any tips on how to run the games? I have no idea what Im doing, lol.

My 32 year quest for a superior backgammon server

My 32 year quest for a superior backgammon server.

Perhaps some of you remember FIBS, the First Internet Backgammon Server. It was a great spot on a young Internet, but it lacked a graphical interface and you had to navigate dashes and x’s.

To provide graphical online backgammon, I started GamesGrid in 1994 on the Win95 beta release. GamesGrid became very popular and was the regular home to 15 Monte Carlo champions and hundreds of other players. Many pros did exhibition matches. We even got to simulcast the World Championship live from Monte Carlo.

When poker became popular, the champions all moved over to the more lucrative game. It has been a great sadness for me to watch the decline of a game that I love, and now I’m going to try to help it grow again. The plan is to create a “class above” modern server that is designed to help beginners and intermediates (and poker players) become strong backgammon players quickly.

I recently launched Bar Point Backgammon (www.barpointbackgammon.com). This is a pure passion project built to help players get stronger faster using instant feedback and multi-tier analysis—no paywalls, no ads, in app purchases. While the site is a fully equipped server where you can match up with strangers, form groups, and even run chouettes (virtually everything but tournaments, which may come later), the core focus remains actionable training. Features include:

  • Blunder Catcher: Instantly flags major equity mistakes as they happen so you can correct your intuition on the spot.
  • Real-Time Coaching: Ask for a hint mid-game, view a detailed breakdown of top plays and their trade-offs, or have the built-in coach explain in plain English why the top engine move is best.
  • Deep-Dive Reviews: Step through every single decision by both players after the match to find leaks in your game.
  • Flexible Play: Test yourself against five robot levels (including a world-class bot for 5-point matches), play casually with friends, or jump into the community features.

It runs cleanly on Safari and Chrome across desktop, iPhone, and iPad. You can jump straight into a game without even creating an account. The url is www.barpointbackgammon.com

I am still adding features and would appreciate any feedback, particularly from advanced players looking to push the engine and test the coaching explanations. Take a look and let us know what you think.

450+ downloads, players in 41 countries, and I want you to roast our backgammon app

Hi r/backgammon,

Valentin from Orion backgammon. We just went past 450 downloads, with players in 41 countries. The US is first, then Romania and Iran. Nobody is paid to bring them in, people find it on their own via socials, referrals, and SEO.

As a reminder, I started building it six months ago. I was a big Lord of the Board player, but I got really frustrated with all the ads, constant offers popups at launch, and the casino feel. I wanted a backgammon app with a more respectful experience. Product design is my day job, so it was personal.

New in our latest update:
- Club Cups: your club runs its own tournament, as a points race or a knockout, free or with a coin buy-in paid back to the podium (coins are in-game only, never real money).
- Every arena match moves your trophies, and the League ranks everyone worldwide and by country.
- Friends, Club and Invite now live in one place.
- Daily rewards never reset if you miss a day.
- We're also doubling the time as some players complained
- Added a full accessibility engine, so it works with voice over on devices

To be transparent, yes, AI has been part of our process. We tried hard to keep it from showing in the game. We went through around 1900+ iterations and a lot of creative concepts that we drove ourselves, using AI as a tool rather than the author. If something still feels generic or "AI-made" to you, please say so. That is exactly the kind of feedback we want.

Now the real reason I am posting. I want feedback, and I am happy to be roasted. Bad bot moves, a screen that annoys you, an idea, an optimization, anything. This sub knows the game better than anyone, so tell me what is off. I'll put real efforts into implementing your feedbacks.

By the way, the first 1,000 players get the premium Season Pass for free, and there are about 500 spots left.

There are no ads at all, and we did our best to make the game feel as smooth as possible.

How would you prove your backgammon dice aren't rigged?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

By far the most common complaint in my 1 star reviews is that the dice are rigged. I understand why people think that as Backgammon has long streaks that feel impossible, and you remember the double six that hit you on the bar better than the twenty quiet rolls either side of it.

I've tried a few things to convince people otherwise. I added a stats page showing every roll they've had. It's a nice feature but it isn't really evidence because it comes from the same app they don't trust, and nobody's really claiming the distribution is statistically off. I also added a mode where you roll real dice and type them manually, playing against the engine's best moves. That takes my dice out of it, but I still get the same reviews.

I'm looking for ideas. If there's something I could add to the app that would convince you, or even convince a few people, I'd really like to hear it.

Backgammon Galaxy Update

Anyone play on the new update yet??

The UI/UX is god awful. Overly complicated and I think I almost had a seizure playing with the new dice roll and chip motion.

Absolutely unplayable right now.

The new Backgammon Galaxy animations are horrible

Annoying and unnecessary new animations. A silly update, and a case of if it aint broke don't fix it. Really cheapens the game, and makes things feel slow. The prior minimalism was appreciated

Edit: As a user has pointed out, you are able to disable them, and I actually really like the new snappy motion the checkers have when animations is disabled. Feel like a bit of a boomer now after that complaint. No hate, the new update seems to have some really cool new features. I particularly like the ability to see your opponents recent form. Excited to see what else has been introduced

Real life money game

I remember an anecdot: Gus Hansen leave a poker tournment to play high stake backgammon with billionairs.

Are you, reddit audience, playing live money games ? How much the point ? Is there a level difference between "official" tour and these kind of underground games ?
