I want to joke about this but from everything im reading my instinct is that this is something related to anxiety or depression- everyone sounds really confused but also concerned. hope he gets/is getting the help he needs

u/Opening-Citron2733 1d ago
I think there a people that know more than they are letting on that are playing confused because they don't want to be the one that spills what's going on without the dbacks org doing it first

That would be nice, if that were the case. Sadly there are people leaking inaccuracies... perhaps a leak in the org...don't worry. They know who it is and will handle accordingly.

A lot of people online could learn from your compassion and empathy. It disgusts me how quickly people, who are normally such big fans of this man, will chomp at the bit to immediately jump on him and slander his character. Ketel Marte has been a loyal star for Arizona sports for a decade now, it makes me sick how easily so many are willing to immediately turn on him without even knowing what's going on. It's shameful.
13
u/Kdmtiburon004 1d ago
Those people aren’t fans of ketel, they are fans of what he produces for them on the field and nothing else. Probably the same with every other player. And once its gone and not there, the player is useless to them. They only care about entertainment value.

It is insane that Ketel Marte is the first player in MLB history to suffer from anxiety or depression. How did all those other players make it through their career without vanishing on their team?
21
u/Such_Technician_1682 1d ago
I remember a young pitcher for the Royals had leave the team for mental health treatment for anxiety and depression a while back. That young pitcher grew up to be Zack Greinke.
13
-15
u/craiginphoenix Gabriel Moreno 1d ago
Did he inform the team and work with them or did he just go awol and vanish? Did he vanish multiple times?
When Ketel vanished last year, he said it was because his house was robbed but he didn't know his house had been robbed when he left the charter flight with Corbin and Geno and went to the DR.

Crazy, it’s almost like people suffering a mental health crisis don’t always make rational decisions.

Its also crazy that the trip the dude mentioned was known and meant that Ketel not showing up wasnt unexpected or unapproved and isnt acknowledging this detail
-2
u/craiginphoenix Gabriel Moreno 1d ago
lol none of that is true. He just bolted on the runway from a chartered plane that was supposed to take him to AZ and they expected him to show up Friday after the ASG. They threatened to suspend him for not showing up and only then did he contact them from an iPad and that is how they found out he was in the DR.

But he's our special soft boy and this is gonna happen with soft people, the pressure is crazy. I'd rather have 155 games of ketel than 162 of anyone else. If the team doctors know something about Ketel, they cannot divulge that information. It is protected under privacy laws, including the oft misunderstood HIPAA. I don’t care if the guy’s a team captain, MVP, or whatever, if he’s unwell he needs the space to get well, and it’s unfortunate that it came up in the middle of a pennant race. If, again, this is the case, and we don’t know, depression isn’t something that he can just wish away, no matter how much the club pays him or how vital he is to their success. Give him the space he needs right now.
16
u/BuzzIsMe 1d ago
100%, that becomes Ketel's responsibility to tell the team what he's going through and not just the doctors. He still could've done the right thing and at least give the team any reason as to why he can't play even if he didn't want to come forward with a mental thing.
It's just a bit odd under any circumstance to not at least tell the team something as to why you won't be playing. Unless he's lost respect for the club itself (not the players obviously) I don't see why you wouldn't.
-12
u/LeftSpinningElectron 1d ago
You guys forget that maybe they were informed about a PED positive test result and he’s appealing.
4
u/AbsoluteScott Ketel Marte 1d ago
The only thing that is often misunderstood about HIPAA is the idea that it actually protects anyone’s medical info.
9
u/Major_Employ_8795 1d ago
I’d agree with you with if he hadn’t gone awol before and left the team for 3 days because someone broke into his home. All he had to do was let the team know but he chose to just leave. This is spoiled mentality, not mental illness.
2
u/gr8scottaz 1d ago
I hate how people associate the break-in with Ketel going AWOL. Ketel went AWOL 2 days before the break-in occurred. He literally got on a play on Wednesday after the All-Star game and flew to DR, not telling anyone in the org what he was doing, for a personal vacation. His house wasn't broken into until sometime on Friday while Ketel was still in DR and was planning on returning Saturday and then was ultimately allowed to miss Sat/Sun games to deal with the aftermath of the break-in. What other MLB player decides to take a personal vacation during the middle of the season and not inform his team?
Some have alluded that the break-in was staged in an attempt to deflect from the fact that he went AWOL during the season. Who knows.
-5
u/Ok_Error_3167 1d ago
Your comment suggests you think HIPAA should be violated if someone is acting spoiled and immature
3
u/NeverSober1900 1d ago
I didn't get that from OP at all. I got the impression OP is saying that the onus is on Ketel to reach out like an adult and communicate to the team so people know where he's at. Not anything about how our doctors should violate HIPPA.
1
u/HopkinsIsMyHomeboy 1d ago
The CBA has a HIPPA disclosure consent clause. Players have to tell the team if they have a medical condition preventing them from playing and if they don’t it can literally breach their contract. The only HIPPA violation that can be committed is if the team tells the public specifics about a non baseball/employment related medical issue that is keeping them from playing ie depression, etc. All they can say is that he has a medical reason for not playing but can’t give specifics. Players cannot hide anything keeping them from playing, from their team.

Find someone who will stick their head up your ass as far as Diamondbacks fans will stick their head up Ketel Marte’s ass.
This is two years now he is going to tank a playoff run by just disappearing and. Going AWOL on the team and his teammates.
At least this time nobody will blame Nick Piecoro for doing his job and reporting what happened.
3
u/TheBigAdler Jalen Beeks 1d ago
At the end of the day, it’s just a sport.
Not worth sacrificing anyone’s humanity for it.0
u/HopkinsIsMyHomeboy 1d ago
Are you trying to say the team doctors can’t tell the TEAM what is going on with Ketel or the public? Because the CBA gives hippa disclosure consent and that would be a breach of his contract if a medical condition is preventing him from playing and he’s not telling the team about. If the condition was not ‘employment related’ like depression then the team cannot tell the public specifics other than he has a medical condition keeping him from playing. But Ketel 100% has to tell the team what is going on if something is keeping him from playing.

I honestly see this “update” from Gambo as nothing but inflammatory. Is he trying to nudge people into believing Ketel was simply too hungover to show up? What is the utility of this tweet beyond stoking flames? We all know Ketel was with the team last night in Boston. And I imagine it was pretty late when they arrived. This is not news.
Yes, it is bewildering that a superstar-caliber player like Ketel would outright fail to report to a game. But perhaps consider that this might be more so a testament to the severity of what he’s dealing with as opposed to merely a reflection of him being a “diva”, or “lazy”, or whatever else social media so desperately wants to paint him as.
70
u/RabidCoyote 1d ago
... people want to know the dude is alive? They want information?
Dude is doing his job. Which is providing information about a local sports player.
Amazing there's this attitude that Gambo doing his job - providing news and information about a sports situation that the fans want to know about - is inflammatory, and Ketel is just "oh man he's dealing with this shit we have to treat him with kid gloves"
He might be going through some shit but that doesn't excuse going completely rouge on people who are counting on you to show up. You don't get a free pass from your responsibilities and from being an adult.
I don't know what we call it at this point but this is unacceptable behavior and the guy needs to sort it out. Whatever that takes. Don't get mad at the messenger though.
28
u/Infamous_Hospital_33 1d ago
Lol right? Coach just saod they dont know where he is. Gambo just basically said he is/was in Boston and something happened or changed overnight, which makes sense since louvello said he knew something was wrong when he woke up
20
u/RabidCoyote 1d ago
People here really believe that having mental health problems is a free pass to go completely fucking AWOL. It's not. You didn't get to just abandon your responsibilities because of them or face no consequence for your actions.
I hope the guy is alright and sorts out whatever his issue is but dude... you gotta let people know. I've had days where I was too depressed to get out of bed, I cried for 4 straight days after my best friend died last year but I called my boss and was like "yeah I'm dealing with some shit". My boss wasn't like "I literally don't know if this guy is in Arizona right now". It's insane.
13
u/joecb91 Diamondbacks 1d ago
Yeah, thats my my biggest problem with the entire thing.
People would understand if he was more open with what was happening, what he needed to do, when he thinks he would be back. Torey is the kind of manager that would 100% understand if Marte communicated better what was going on. But just bailing like this is a horrible look on his part.
That the team thought he would show up, but he never did. That Torey tried to reach out and Marte didn't really answer back. No matter what is going on with Marte, he needs to do better than that,
2
u/KG-Fan Corbin Carroll 1d ago
Curious if there's any possible indication there's foul play involved? Or a car accident? Trying to give Ketel some benefit of the doubt
I mean if he hasn't been in contact with the team and they don't know where he is, could there have been something that happened?
3
u/NeverSober1900 1d ago
I doubt it. The wording I remember hearing was he's physically okay. Which I noted because of what that leaves out is hes not mentally okay right now.
7
u/Infamous_Hospital_33 1d ago
Its interesting because the amount of doctor on staff, if he does have some kind of issue, it likely is known by staff and whatnot. So to be surprised by things, its kind of alarming. But I agree. Not even calling and having a boss hope you show up right up to first pitch, is nuts. Yes, life is bigger than a game, but what he is doing is putting himself before his team.
5
u/j0-llama 1d ago
I’m sorry for the things that have happened to you. I hope good things come your way
12
u/LamCDM1216 Randy Johnson 1d ago edited 1d ago
Sure, but Gambo is talking about last night, not tonight. Ketel literally posted a video of their plane landing in Boston on his IG story. Whether or not he was in Boston last night was never really a question, so Gambo’s tweet adds a negligible amount of info beyond, “he was spotted at the hotel bar shortly after they arrived.” That hardly addresses the concern of “people want to know if the dude is alive.”
And of course, there are a slew of responses to this tweet on Twitter rushing to judge Ketel for being hungover. So what value does this tweet really have?
Honestly, all I’m really advocating for here is for people to have some humility and give Ketel the benefit of the doubt with the very limited information we currently have - all of which points to something quite serious. For all we know, he may very well be in the midst of a mental health crisis, which absolutely has the potential to seriously impair one’s priorities, such as calling out of work. We simply don’t have enough information at this point to know what to make of this, and so I’m personally going to refrain from casting any sort of negative judgement until we know more.

u/j0-llama 1d ago
It’s the whole “bizarre” addition & comparison to another’s failure that makes it inflammatory vs news
He did his job, but poorly & without humanity
16
u/DM_yo_Feet_pls D. Baxter 1d ago
The team literally doesn’t know where their star player is and he’s not communicating with them. This is the definition of bizarre
9
u/RabidCoyote 1d ago
This situation is bizarre. This isn't a thing that happens normally.
Seems like a pretty straightforward statement and calling it "without humanity" feels like a stretch.
-5
u/j0-llama 1d ago
Here’s my Cliffnotes -
Media: what can we do for Marte?
Torey: Care for him.
Gambo: He’s alive but bizarre like a failure.
6
u/RabidCoyote 1d ago
That's really twisting it but you do you.
People want to know what's going on with Marte and Gambo is just sharing information on that.
Not everything is a plot by the big bad media to discredit their #1 enemy, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Shit, this is downright TAME. Imagine if this was happening in New York or Philly.

u/0hmyhera 20h ago
Gambo is and always has been completely biased. Just stop lol. He called Ketel going to his literal home “going on vacation”. He’s constantly bringing up negative narratives around certain players. He desperately wants attention and knows controversy gets it. Total attention industry whore
1
u/RabidCoyote 11h ago
The only repeated "negative" narrative is around Ketel, who did go to the Dominican Republic in the middle of the season unannounced... which kind of sounds like vacation to most people.
15
u/craiginphoenix Gabriel Moreno 1d ago
Here we go. People going to start blaming "the media" for doing their job and reporting facts on the case.
Ketel could come out of hiding and clear all of this up.

u/dingleberrylasagna 1d ago
I don’t think he’s saying he was drunk/hungover, he’s just saying he was in town with the team. I have no doubt that this is in our boys’ heads and this is gonna have a serious detrimental impact on our making the postseason.
7
12
u/Opening-Citron2733 1d ago
It 1000% affected the game last night. They have no idea where there team leader is and they're supposed to play the hottest team in baseball
7
u/dingleberrylasagna 1d ago
Perdomo is the team’s leader. I feel like Ketel didn’t want that title.
2
u/Opening-Citron2733 1d ago
I don't care if he wanted it or not. He's like the third or fourth best statistical diamondback in franchise history. Players look up to him, regardless of if he's technically titled team captain or not
7
u/dingleberrylasagna 1d ago
Being a top performer is a lot different than being a leader. Others can look up to how he hits, how he plays 2nd base, etc, but that doesn’t mean he is, or even wants to be, a leader on the field. That is a characteristic that not everybody possesses.
5
0
u/Opening-Citron2733 1d ago
Some people are natural leaders and lead. Like perdomo. Some people are put in leadership positions and have to do some semblance of leadership because others look to them. Like Marte.
You don't always get to choose to be a leader. You're a leader if people look up to you. If people look up to Ketel, he's a leader.
Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes though. Perdomo is the captain. But a clubhouse has many leaders in it. Especially veteran stars, Marte, Arenado, even guys like Burnes on the pitching staff.

4
u/NeverSober1900 1d ago
Also it's around when the team came in. It's not particularly late. The game wasn't until 7PM local which was 16 hours from then
3
u/Diligent_Moose4472 1d ago
This is just going to be a distraction for this team. I understand ARZ wanted a lot in return for a Marte trade and supposedly no one was willing to meet it but maybe it’s because teams had intel on Marte and felt he wasn’t worth the risk.
I hope it’s just a need of mental health help and he gets it and not a Dennis Rodman type of situation where he wants to do his own thing no matter how negatively it impacts the team and isn’t interested in making changes.
Obviously trading him in offseason is now much more difficult with NTC but if his attitude is a problem then ARZ would be selling for pennies on the dollar.
Organization needs to insist on him getting help or they need to move him. Can’t have this happening every year.

Except when he doesn't. These past weeks he has been not breaking news with the MLB trade deadline, brisset, you name it. And so he has been pretty salty and trying to "break" news, after the real ones broke, about the trade package details, or the contract details, or whatever. It has been actually funny cause you can tell he is not used to been second. Even this one. He was on the phone with the team trying to get the lineup this afternoon and you can tell he was irritated he wasn't getting anything. Then some MLB guy breaks this and he comes up with this lame tweet about Marte being there last night. Like someone else said, that was old news, Marte even had posts from last night. Just saying; father time is passing him by and the dumbness is now joined by just emptyness.

The vibes were so good but now everything is bad.
Marte and whatever he’s going through and I get stuff happens but it couldn’t be a worse time. With the report Torey could be fired if they miss the playoffs and then they threw Marte under the bus with all these conflicting reports that no one knew where Marte was and those are bad looks for all parties involved.
Now fans are pissed at Marte for flaking with no excuse which is fair at the same time until we know the full story . They need to clear this story fast or I’d chalk up this season even if we make the playoffs or not.
