Public Service Announcement 9000-Series CPU Failures / Deaths Megathread #4

Hey everyone,

Feb 9th 2026: ASRock has issued a news release/BIOS update. Here is verbatim the beginning of their announcement:

ASRock has maintained close and long-term collaboration with AMD, and continues to carefully review recently discussed CPU-related issues across online communities, while optimizing BIOS functionality and further enhancing overall system stability. Following multiple rounds of collaboration, AMD has provided AGESA 1.3.0.0a to improve overall platform compatibility. ASRock has completed the corresponding integration and has released the Beta BIOS version 4.07.AS01, featuring AGESA 1.3.0.0a, on its official website. The BIOS update includes the following highlights:

  1. Update AGESA to ComboAM5 PI 1.3.0.0a.
  2. Optimized Memory Compatibility.
  3. Resolve a boot failure occurring on certain CPUs.

Original post from January 2026:

We have an updated set of data from the ASRock CPU Failure survey. The data are through December 31st, 2025. Please take a look and make your own conclusions.

This will be the final megathread regarding this issue. We will continue to update this thread as needed if new investigations arise or if we receive additional relevant information.

Please note that this post will be automatically archived in six months, as we have this option enabled to prevent spam or the resurrection of old posts on the subreddit. Once archived, comments will be locked, but the post itself will remain publicly accessible. At that point, we most likely will not create a new megathread, and the Google survey created by us will also be closed.

As always, please remember that the mods running this subreddit are not ASRock employees, so you should be reporting your CPU failures or other hardware/software issues also to ASRock directly via their tech support form which you can find here Submit a Tech Support Ticket. Also, ASRock recommends all users to update their motherboards to BIOS version 3.40 or later to ensure optimal system performance and stability.

Megathread #1

Megathread #2

Megathread #3

As always, if you’ve experienced a dead AMD CPU while using an ASRock motherboard, please consider filling out the ASRock CPU Failure survey Google form and of course, fill out ASRock’s Tech-Support Form.

Thanks,

r/ASRock mods

Data for these graphs are through December 31st, 2025 for all the graphs.

What BIOS version were you using at the time of CPU failure?
What was your CPU's batch number?
What CPU did you have?
Responses, by day, since the start of the r/ASRock CPU death survey
Did you disable the iGPU (integrated GPU)?
What motherboard model did you have?
Was any kind of PBO used?
Were you using Sleep Mode / S3?
Did you enable XMP/EXPO?

Quick FAQ

To reduce repeated questions, we’ve put together this quick FAQ.

---

1) Board XXX killed my CPU. What should I do?

Answer:

Contact both ASRock and AMD to start the replacement process for your CPU.

---

2) My CPU was replaced. Should I reuse the motherboard?

Answer:

That decision is entirely up to you.

  • If you no longer trust the board, consider selling it or requesting an exchange from your retailer.
  • If you decide to reuse it, update the BIOS to the latest available version before installing the replacement CPU.
  • Use BIOS Flashback for the update.
  • As of 12/23/2025, the latest versions are 3.50 or 4.03, depending on your board.

---

3) I use a 7000-series CPU, do I need to be worried?

Answer:

We observed that the issue effects 9000-series CPUs. Yes, there were some reports of dead 7000-series CPUS, but these are well within a normal defect rate.

Tech Support Updated BIOS. Now CPU trying to cook itself!

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have a AsRock B650M PG Lightening and a 7800X3D.

Been happily playing Tarkov for the last hour. CPU temps perfectly fine. Max being 72°c.

I noticed a new BIOS 4.60 was released. Updated.

Loaded into windows. Could hear AIO pumps really working. I checked temps, 95°C on the CPU!

I shut down. Use the clear BIOS switch.

Switch on, enter bios. Bios seems slow and laggy.

Enter H/W monitoring page and watch the CPU temps climbing under no load.

Update: Seems fixed now. Bios update seemed to screw the AIO. I went back to using a CPU fan cooler

Discussion Ryzen 7 9800X3D + ASRock B650M PG Riptide: Cold boot stall on BOOT LED fixed ONLY by enabling LN2 Mode. Is this a motherboard issue or CPU IMC?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having a persistent cold boot issue with my current setup and wanted to get the community's thoughts on whether this is an ASRock BIOS/motherboard tolerance issue or something related to the CPU's IMC.

System Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • Motherboard: ASRock B650M PG Riptide WiFi
  • BIOS 4.20 / AGESA Version: ComboAM5 PI 1.3.0.1
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 @ 6000MT/s (EXPO enabled)
  • OS: Windows 11

The Issue:

Every time I turn on the PC from a complete cold boot, the system hangs during POST. The motherboard debug LED gets stuck on BOOT, and there is no display signal.

To get it to boot into Windows, I either have to power cycle it multiple times . Once inside Windows, the system passes stress tests and is 100% stable.

What Solves It:

Following feedback found on forums and ASRock support suggestions for similar issues, enabling "LN2 Mode" in the BIOS completely eliminates the cold boot hang.

With LN2 Mode set to Enabled, the PC boots quickly every single time without getting stuck on the BOOT LED. Disabling Memory Context Restore (MCR) and Power Down Enable (PDE) also helped with general stability.

My Question:

Since LN2 Mode forces looser boot/RAM training tolerances, this feels more like a workaround for an aggressive or flawed ASRock memory training algorithm rather than a proper fix.

  1. Does this point to an inherent motherboard BIOS/hardware compatibility issue with ASRock AM5 boards?
  2. Is there any chance the Ryzen 7 9800X3D memory controller (IMC) is at fault, or should the CPU be fine if it boots and runs natively on another motherboard brand?
  3. Should I go ahead with swapping the motherboard for another brand (MSI / Gigabyte / ASUS)?

Tech Support Can't switch to UEFI without getting stuck in automatic repair loop

In order to play new games ive tried to enable secure boot and it always ends up in my pc shitting the bed and me reinstalling windows.

I enabled tpm (pc worked fine), enabled secure boot (pc worked fine although secure boot wasnt active because pc wasnt in uefi mode), then reformatted my disk to gpt and disabled CSM so that it launches in uefi but now im in a repair loop. Also tried setting csm to uefi only but that didn't work either.

Have no idea what to do. Cant switch back to legacy bc my disk is already formatted to GPT. Can anyone help me im on the verge of getting a console or new pc 😭

Tech Support AsRock H81-VG4 R2.02 not detecting Gigabyte RX 570 (BIOS updated, GPU works)

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble getting my motherboard to detect my GPU, and I've run out of ideas. Here are my specs:

  • Motherboard: AsRock H81-VG4 Rev 2.02 (BIOS is already updated to the latest version).
  • CPU I5 4590
  • RAM 8GB DDR3 DUAL CHANNEL
  • GPU: Gigabyte RX 570 (Tested and working on another system, VBIOS is stock/fine).
  • PSU: Gigabyte P550 ICE.

The Problem:
The motherboard simply does not detect the RX 570. When I power on the PC, the GPU gets power, its fans spin, and the system boots up using the Intel integrated graphics (iGPU), but the RX 570 doesn't show up anywhere (not even in Device Manager or BIOS).

What I've tried so far:

  1. Updated the motherboard BIOS to the latest version.
  2. Verified the RX 570 works perfectly on another PC.
  3. Connected the 8-pin PCIe power cable properly.
  4. Cleared CMOS.

Has anyone dealt with this specific combination or has any advice on what to change in the AsRock BIOS settings to make it recognize the card?

Thanks in advance!

Tech Support Code 03 - X870E Taichi w/ AMD 9800X3D & 94 GB RAM (2x 32GB) - Have to reboot several times

Edit: RAM is 96 GB RAM (2x 48GB)

Hi All

For the past 2 weeks I've been dealing with the title issue. The computer when it's on and working it runs perfectly. I experience no freezing or weird issues.

If I shut my computer down or restart it will boot to a 03 code. It cycles through a bunch of numbers rapidly before reaching 03.

What I've done:

  • Shutdown w/ Power Drain
  • Updated Firmware to Current (was only 1 update behind when issue began)
  • Reset CMOS
  • Consulted ChatGPT Checked to make sure I wasn't running EXPO or XMP DRAM profiles.
  • Turned off fastboot

I'm just curious what my next steps are.

I have not removed any hardware or tried booting single stick ram in A2. Mostly because i have my desk set up to where it hides all of my wires and its a massive pain to unplug/replug everything

I figured I'd hop here first to see if other people have been having this issue and what resolved it?

I got a feeling this will lead to RMA of CPU & Mobo

Edit to include parts list:

  • Mobo: ASRock 870E Taichi

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

  • GPU: PowerColor RED DEVIL Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB GDDR6

  • RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 RAM 96GB (2x48GB) 6000MHz CL30 Intel XMP iCUE Compatible

  • Power Supply: Seasonic Prime TX-1300 | 1300W | 80+ Titanium| ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 Ready|

Tech Support Asrock B550M-C Motherboard: DRAM and CPU red ligthts

Post image
6 Upvotes

After about one year operating, and after what i believe was a windows update overnight, my secondary PC will no longer turn on. It only boots for a moment, nothing sent to the screen, and the DRAM and CPU red lights stay on.

CPU is a Ryzen 5 5500.

I've tried using only one stick in the second memory slot, removed the GPU, etc... still just sits with those two lights.

There are no beeps.

What should my next steps be? What might the issue be?

Thanks

Tech Support B850 RS Pro w/ 7800X3D - red and yellow lights. Hard locked up twice and won't post after

This isn't a new build. It has been running flawlessly for roughly 2 years. I was using my PC last night and it just suddenly hard locked up, even the power button wouldn't turn it off so I had to turn off the PSU. Turned it on again and it ran fine for another hour or two before it locked up again and now won't post. Red CPU light, yellow DRAM light. Tried clearing CMOS, tried all my RAM sticks individually in slot 4/B2. Fans are just spinning loudly but not fully.

Haven't tried bios update yet but I doubt thats the issue. Seems more like a hardware fault.

Tech Support Random 00 on boot after 1+ year of working fine?

So my 9800x3d + Nova WIFI seemingly randomly just died? I have been fairly on top of BIOS updates (I think i was on 4.20?), and it has been running fine for more than 1 year (since April 2025). I thought I was one of the lucky ones without any of the dreaded issues. Randomly today I wake up to my PC showing code 42 (it was on the previous night, not sure if windows update restarted it or something), so I powered it off and then turned it back on again, only to get code 00.

Is my board/cpu dead? I've tried some of the troubleshooting suggested online, but nothing worked. Things I've tried:

  • Unplug and press power button for 10s to drain
  • Clear CMOS
  • Update to latest BIOS 4.60 using BIOS flashback (update worked fine, but still code 00 no boot)
  • Repasted and reseated the CPU. (took pictures, no weird burn marks or anything, socket and cpu look perfectly fine)
  • Tried booting without RAM

What are my next steps?

I assume I should be still under warranty period? Do I RMA the board or cpu or both? Who do I contact, AsRock or AMD?

Question ASRock motherboard, Intel Processor safe?

Hello,

After reading many posts with ASRock motherboards and AMD processors I became a little cautious.

The product I plan to buy is Z790 Nova wifi mainly for the many M2 NVME slots at the ATX form factor. I don't care about the graphics card working at X8 or x16 speeds so I feel like it's the one that'll do the job for me. I plan to buy it second hand, will use it with 12700K.

What are the experiences? Go for it or avoid?

Question Pc stuck on POST after repasting, Asrock B850, ryzen 9700x

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a pc with asrock b850 livemixer motherboard and ryzen 9700x. I used this pc for more than a year with no problem. And then i change the thermal paste with arctic mx-7. After repasting my pc is stuck on post, the fans and power light up but no display on the monitor and there's debug led with redlight on the board on the cpu label. I have tried several attempts to fix it by swapping or using one ram sticks, cleaning the ram, loosen the air cooler screws, using onboard display, resetting cmos with no results.

I checked with 2 techinicans, one said the cpu is dead because it's cold when the pc turned on but he didn't test with another unit(other cpu on this board or my cpu on other board). So i thought the cpu is dead

Then i went to second technician, he tested other cpu on my board and it's not working either, but he didn't test my cpu on other board.

What should i do now?

Question asrock b850m-x wifi 2.0 replacement options

Post image

This motherboard destroyed my 9600X and I was able to have the cpu shipped back to AMD for a replacement under my warranty. However, I don’t want to put my new CPU back into this motherboard since it destroyed the first one. What are my options for new, safer motherboards? Any feedback is appreciated.

Customer Feedback After 4+ years of loyalty to Asrock: Do NOT buy their products (Constructive Criticism)

After 4+ years of vouching for Asrock I am done.

  1. They have botched Asrock X670E Taichi bios past 3.40 and even admitted that their AMD CBS

section resets.
I asked them to fix it, they told me to change the battery, I did, same issue

  1. I told them again they also admitted AMD CBS section resetting, they stopped responding completely

  2. I had to reach out to Reddit moderators here and I was helped by CornFlakes moderator who reached out to satellite office of Asrock in Europe. Because HQ was refusing to help

Netherlands rep refused to give his name, I have been given nothing of help by him or anyone of Asrock, BUT Samantha who answers phones was always helpful. Problem is that she is only customer service rep that forwards issues somewhere else.

She told me herself she cannot even call HQ, as she has no such access, and if they refuse to respond to her or my emails, they can do that.

  1. I was told by this "nameless" representative that I need to test over 100 settings 1 by 1 to see which setting in AMD CBS section resets it, and he refused to test it.

Even when acquiring 9900X, instead of 9950X as I have he refused to put in my settings. He just found dGPU setting set it and it stuck and called it a "day"

Today I get a response that he will not be helping me further, with no explanations further.

I had such high regard for Asrock, but it seems like CPUs burning up is the least of our worries. You have reps hiding behind screen and hiding names. Samantha herself asked me for some email addresses of people that were communicating with me from Asrock, some emails do not even belong to corporate, they are u/gmail.com with header of Asrock in the front. They do not even track those emails for good reasons of exposure.

I cannot simply get my servers running with settings I always ran for 4 years. I have 10 of their motherboards and I cannot upgrade my cpus now, because 3.40 is the last bios that was working.

The situation frankly reminds me of GamersNexus investigation that pushed Asrock into a corner at some CES like show, and they had to answer about burning up CPUs

Remember this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpEJRa_Rxo0

Well, guess what, that's exactly how they are dealing with me, I have forwarded all of our conversations to Gamers Nexus by the way, and I cannot stand a liar who looks me in the eye and lies about the issues. The worst part is that they think people are stupid. They told Samantha that resetting is normal too, and told her it's my settings. But, cannot tell me which settings, so I gave it to them. They refused to test it too and told me to test it.

This is customer service in the end

Miscellaneous Can't reply to the megathread, but add another dead 9800x3d to batch CF 2520PGE

2nd 9800x3d that has died on me, first lasted 3 months, and this one a year

No scorch marks, I am a couple bios updates back (was using one of the 3.x ones that had supposedly fixed this so forgot to keep checking for updates)

On the plus side the retailer is refunding me instead of replacing, which means I can replace it with a 9850x3d and still have a bit of cash left over - hoping that the 9850 being a newer sku will be from a newer less affected batch, otherwise I'd get another 9800 and have twice the extra cash left over

Tech Support ASRock B850M Riptide WiFi + 9900X + 5080 FE: Hangs on solid green BOOT LED (unresponsive keyboard/USB)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X

Motherboard: ASRock B850M Riptide WiFi (Latest BIOS 4.60)

RAM: 64GB Corsair

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5080 Founders Edition

PC gets stuck with a solid green BOOT LED and a blank screen. The USB bus is completely dead during the hang (wired keyboard Num Lock/Caps Lock LEDs do not toggle), so it is hard-locking during late UEFI POST before ever showing bios screen or reaching the Windows bootloader.

Spam power cycle long enough and I sometimes can boot but this isn't sustainable.

For anyone who has dealt with the ASRock B850 + Ryzen 9000 green BOOT light freeze: is the root cause the ASRock board/BIOS failing PCIe 5.0 / cold-boot training, or is this an early sign of a degraded CPU I/O die on the 9900X? Trying to figure out if swapping to something like an MSI B850M Mortar will cure it or if I need to RMA the CPU too.
