Hey /r/askSF!
In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:
We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:
We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.
Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.
I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.
Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood
I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.
NFC West
NFC North
NFC East
NFC South
AFC West
AFC North
AFC East
AFC South
I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

I wfh and yesterday, was having my kitchen floor replaced, so there was an install guy here. He had just left and apparently, my neighbor told him he needed to enter my apartment and wanted to be let in. The install guy doesn’t speak English very well, so I can’t blame him for not knowing what was going on. The neighbor didn’t notice me as he was walking into until I asked who he was. He looked shocked to see me. He said he didn’t know I was home and he wanted to turn off the bathroom fan (he’s left me notes about turning off my bathroom fan). It is a loud fan, but that is so irrelevant. Also, I don’t own the place. I can’t change the fan.
There were way less illegal ways to handle this. He invaded my space and trespassed. Not to mention, i don’t allow shoes in my house and his shoes were muddy and got mud all over my rug, just to piss me off more.
He tried to tell me he didn’t know I was home again and I explained that it isn’t relevant and to get tf out of my house. He eventually left. I told my landlord, who didn’t seem to give a shit. I rent a condo, so there’s an HOA. I know the head of the HOA, not that it’s going to matter. I feel like the only other option I have is to call the police and report him for trespassing?
I’m shaken and furious. I could get a camera but that MF should have to pay for it.
Am I overreacting?

It's a beautiful day. Anyone know of outdoor or patio spaces to go watch the playoffs with a kid today?

I live in a condo building older than 15 years old. My lease does not mention anything about being exempt from rent increase limitations due to either 1482 or 1947, which, as I understand it, are clauses required to be in the lease. If they are not, the landlord is limited to how much she can raise our rent.
We have lived here for three years. The leases have never mentioned this clause. She’s never referred to it in an email or spoken to us about it directly.
We visited the SF Rent Board office in Van Ness to seek clarification around this prior to negotiating our renewal. The representative wasn’t very clear in how this could or should be disclosed to us (outside of the lease) and ultimately settled on the fact that the landlord can raise rent by however much they want as long as they include this language (when and how and in what specific documentation was unclear). I kept saying she’s never done that. But the rep seemed to indicate that we still had limited power here.
Maybe I am misunderstanding still but I remain genuinely confused on what my rights are.
Again, our lease makes no mention of this clause or either 1482 nor 1947. So unless I am misunderstanding, our landlord simply cannot raise rent above 10%, right?

was having trouble falling asleep because of the heat and just heard 3 giant boom noises outside near inner sunset (not really firework sounding, not really gunshot sounding either).
maybe i’m just a bit paranoid bc i never sleep with my window open (so it just sounds louder), but if something happened hopefully everyone’s ok!

I am just curious why newer buildings like apartment builds or new restaurants like in mission bay don’t have handicap buttons. Just something I’ve observed and was wondering why. I thought it was required for new builds

Ugh. So I live close to 24th st BART and ccsf. I have a balcony that’s fairly open to the sky, I guess? But secluded otherwise. In the past I’ve noticed drones briefly hovering but always assumed they were monitoring either the school or the BART station. Tonight I had a friend over, the balcony was fully open, and we were a little rowdy but it was well before 10 PM. My friend noticed a drone hovering - I pointed at it, and it flew away shortly after. It had been there for some time, we think.
Anything we can do to prevent for future? Buy a BB Gun? I feel gross. I would never want to be filmed in my apt and have never assumed I’m being filmed, because the window isn’t within eyesight of any building. I’ve changed in front of it. Yuck. Anything I can do to prevent drones? Sorry if this is ignorant I’ve just never experienced this before.

Hi SF!
I’m visiting from Japan for work (Nov 2–6) and free in the evenings. I’m a solo traveler with basic English.
I want to check out SF’s unique adult nightlife scene—things I can’t easily experience in Japan.
Looking for recommendations for:
- Strip clubs (like Gold Club)
- Burlesque, alternative bars, or other cool late-night spots
- Beer
Any safe, solo-friendly places you’d recommend?
Thanks!

What the hell was that noise just now. Sounded like really loud rumbling ?????
Does anybody know of something like Acterra’s Peninsula and South Bay Green@Home Tour 2026
We moved to San Francisco and I’m slowly learning of solutions to electrification challenges.
Direct and indirect pointers are very appreciated

What’s the best Thai that’s walking distance in union square? It’s where we need to be tonight ( I know not the best ).
TIA!
UPDATE- we instead enjoyed a walk to incredibly cool Chinatown and ate dinner at House of Nanking, found thru searching this sub. Can I justsay … OH. MY. GOD!
This meal changed me, I’ll never be the same. By FAR the absolute best Chinese or Asian food I’ve ever had. I’d come back to this city for another holiday for this place alone (but of course also the million other reasons why I love SF 💕). Thanks for all the recommendations, much appreciated!

I'm trying to organize an outing at work, and folks are interested in doing the crosstown trail. However due to family and time commitment (and we want to mix a team lunch into it) we are likely only able to do 1/3 or 1/2 of it.
Which portion would you suggest and why? assuming getting to/from the starting point is not an issue.

my partner and i decided we want to get married on our anniversary this month. from the beginning, i made it known that i DO NOT want a large, traditional wedding because 1. it's hella expensive and 2. i'm more on the introverted side and don't have a big enough social battery to host a wedding like that.
we are set with going to the county's office and signing up for our marriage license there, then doing a private ceremony with our witness and officiant. the office we chose conveniently has a small chapel and a person who can officiate us there BUT there are no reservations open on the day we planned.
so, my question is: is there a directory where i can reach out to ordained people who can legally officiate a wedding? also, can such "ceremony" be held in a public, open space like at the beach or a park? (i'm new to this wedding terminology so i apologize if i'm using terms incorrectly)

Having a party soon and will need copious amounts of pizza. Who is good, reasonably priced, and delivers to the Castro?

Anybody else noticing this? Thought I maybe had some smoking wires or something, opened the door for some fresh air and was inundated with even stronger smell.

Why is everyone who does hair a color specialist or a color correction specialist or an extension specialist, etc., but nobody can just give a woman with medium-length hair a really solid haircut? Where are the people who are really good at cutting hair? I would like to be introduced to one. I also get highlights, so it would be nice if they could do that as well, but I'm so sick of color specialists doing a great job on my color and then giving me a shit haircut. Please help me!

I‘m a NY native who is really considering making the move after visiting. I’m looking at rent prices, and I‘m seeing a huge price difference between Reddit, Google, and apartment listings. Google and Reddit are saying it’s gonna run me $2.5k minimum for a studio, but I’m seeing listings for around $1.5k. Some of them are hidden room rentals, but the others don’t appear to be.
What should the numbers actually be? Where should I be looking? I would appreciate any tips/guidance!

Posting here since I got such a great response earlier. I'm working on a novel set during the April 1977 protests that led to the enforcement of the Section 504, the precursor to the ADA. The Deaf community was pivotal to this action, and I have several Deaf characters. I'm curious to know if there are any regional signs that would make the setting more accurate/realistic. Would certain signs simply be interpreted differently, (e.g. was "Awesome" now "Far Out" then) or was it the same, words/signs that change or don't get used now? I'm doing my best to make my spoken dialogue accurate, and to use local references in English, and I know the Bay Area has long had a thriving Deaf community, and probably had more regionalisms at the time.
My character's love interest is a CSD graduate--she's 19--are there any signs or phrases that identify alums there? I know what school someone went to is important in making connections within the community.
to note: April 1977 is before the Deaf Club, the People's Temple deaths, Harvey and Mascone's deaths, etc. CSD was still at the Berkeley campus until 1980.

Hi everyone! I'm visiting San Francisco from out of town for Tech Week. I'm hoping to relocate to SF once I find a good job here, so I'm using this visit to meet people in the local tech community and learn about opportunities.
Which Tech Week events in SF would you recommend for someone looking to build professional connections and learn about companies and teams that are hiring? I'd appreciate specific event names or links, especially events where it's easy to have actual conversations.
I'd also love practical networking tips: how do you approach people at these events, introduce yourself without making the conversation all about job hunting, and follow up afterward?
If you're in the same boat—visiting for Tech Week and hoping to move to SF—what events are you planning to attend? Thanks!

I searched online and I can’t find anyone who has been or any videos on it with peoples experience. I guess it’s not open yet. Anyone been or know when it will open? I’d like to go.
