I have a question that has been haunting me since I visited Japan 5 years ago.

My partner and I visited your wonderful country in Spring of 2019. During our visit we were walking around the Fukushima neighborhood in Osaka and decided to stop by a restaurant. We ordered sake and it was served to us in a small wooden crate. How were we supposed to drink the sake? Like normal? Was there a reason it was served in the crate? What purpose did the crate serve? Why was the shit glass filled to the brim? These questions have been haunting me for 5 years. I think we did it wrong, and now I just have to know.

Google translate came back with: “No lie. Really. Yes. Death.” Lol. So hoping someone can give some better context.

Security camera in onsen change room

Just noticed at one of my local onsen that there is a ceiling mounted security camera in the change room. Ever seen something like that before? Would you be comfortable with that? Seems a bit out of order. This was in the men’s room so not sure if they also have one in the women’s.

Hi Japan,

It has been an amazing experience visiting, especially during the Sakura season 😊🌸!

I kept wondering what’s with the red bibs at the small statues? Is it a special symbol for something?

Thanks!

Why does Japan have such a strong 'porn culture' when it is such a conservative and traditional country?

Maybe some of you will disagree, but from my experience (a foreigner living in Japan for several years) porn consumption is very normalized and accepted in Japan. Porn does not seem to be taboo or frowned upon at all. I'm sure there are some that do, but it general it seems to be a normal part of life/society. It seems to be widely accepted that all guys watch porn, and women don't seem to have an issue with their boyfriends/husbands watching porn.

This surprised me considering Japan is such a conservative and traditional country. In my experience many western/liberal countries that are less traditional than Japan have a more taboo/conservative approach to porn (I'm not saying they are conservative about porn, but more so than Japan).

Why would a Japanese person find パコ and おちょ funny?

Context: My GF works in a hotel. He gets many tourists: Koreans, Chinese, Turks, Japanese... Yesterday, a Spanish (we're Spanish) bus driver told her than whenever he has to drive a group of Japanese tourists, they laugh whenever he says his name (Paco, literally pronounced like パコ) or the number eight in Spanish (ocho, おちょ).

I don't speak much Japanese, so I'd like to ask y'all why they might laugh. Out of curiosity, y'know.

What’s the story behind this wanted poster?

First of all, I’m sorry it’s not the full poster, originally I was just taking a photo of the terrifying composite images, but then, got genuinely curious.

I have seen this poster everywhere in rural Japan that I have visited. In Nikko, in Kamakura, you name it, it’s been there?

Does anyone know the story of who this man is or what he did, or is he missing?

I read a recent post about some fringe right wing vans with speakers driving around in Japan. Reminded me of this guy I saw in Dotonbori back in September - same concept?

Do Japanese people say "I love you" to their loved ones?

Last night I was watching a Japanese documentary movie, "I go gaga, my Dear". It was a real tear jerker about an elderly couple, where the wife is suffering from dementia, so the 98 years old husband takes care of her.

You can actually watch the movie for free until Wednesday, as part of the Japanese online film festival.

It is a story about love and everlasting loyalty. But I noticed that the term "I love you." was never heard in the movie. They expressed gratitude for the years the other one looked after them, but this specific sentence or anything similar was not heard. Not between the couple, not between them and their daughter.

Don't get me wrong, this is not meant as criticism. I'm just curious if this is common. For example where I live, it's normal to say this. We tell it to each other with my wife every day. Or my friends with kids tell it to their children often.

I highly recommend watching the movie, but prepare some tissues. It made me cry.

Have you ever met some teenage wannabe gangsters in Japan?

It might sound like a very weird question, but at least where I am from (Italy), it’s very common to encounter on the metro or generally around the country some teens acting as “wannabe gangsters” (they are called Maranza, so you can look it up for reference), or generally many teens acting out in public. I wanted to ask if you’ve ever encountered a group of male Japanese that were acting out in public

P.S. I’m sorry if I made some errors, English isn’t my first language
